Been going to schoops my whole life. Very consistent, outstanding burgers, hearty and delicious chili, yummy soups, and usually pretty speedy service. The only thing missing is the friendly, personable servers of the past. In my opinion, this is the one thing that Schoops has been lacking the past few years. Ordered a Micky from the (nice)girls in the back, i came to front to pay and wont take my $ cause ticket wasnt sent 20 ft from back counter,was treated rudely by front cashier lady for my 1 sandwhich order. I am absolutely impress with this place! We were able to be sat right away and our beverage orders were brought out right after we ordered it. Fun fact, they have real Cherry Coke with Grenadine Syrup! Our service was amazing with so much sunshine and light. Cara took care of us and all of her tables like family. We came in for breakfast and especially from being out of town, everything was hot, tasty and delicious. They have a huge variety on their menu and seems like anything you'd choose, you wouldn't regret. The atmosphere was lively. There were a lot of classic decor and memorabilia on the walls making it feel like an old school diner vibe. Prices were reasonable and service was the best of the best. Schoop's is to NWI as Whataburger is to Texas and In-N-Out is to California, except that Schoop's is dine-in. They are all over NWI and I've eaten at several over the years. My stepdad will not eat anywhere else. My grandsons love their shakes. They have good food and are a throw-back to the 1950s. We ate here again yesterday afternoon. The Valpo location is one of the smaller restaurants I've been in, a square dining area that's a bit more nondescript than others. Every other table was taped off and we got to sit at a round table near the entrance. Service was fast and we got our drinks and shakes before our food, but the server got my order of a grilled chicken wrong and got me a grilled cheese. Others in my party heard me say grilled chicken. I ate the grilled cheese anyway as I was hungry. Items here are a la carte. You must order french fries with a sandwich if you want both, so that $3.99 grilled cheese with a large order of fries is $3.59 more. I didn't care for the fries as they weren't golden enough. I like crispy, golden fries, not fries that are just hot with grease. This location has a Hall of Fun in the back by the restrooms; caricatures on the wall with silly comments that are indeed cute. And as is typical of all Schoop's, the walls are decorated with archival photos of actors and singers from long ago. read more

Thought I was in the wrong spot. Ran back up to the front counter. Nope can't take an order there. Gotta go to the back finally getting to place order with a lot of side eye. Food was ready!!! the order shoved at me, was told that I now have to go back up to the front counter to pay for food-waited in line while 3-dine in guests paid their tabs, then it was my turn! had to chase someone down for ketchup, salt, napkins. I've been a loyal customer since I was in middle school! Grew up going here on half days for lunch in my school days, breakfast on Sunday mornings with family after church, and reuniting with old friends whenever we're all back home. I love it !!!! It is a diner - it is greasy, unhealthy, but good food !! My only complaint is the wait staff (some, not all) seems to have gotten less friendly over the years. It used to feel a bit more "slow down and enjoy" but the last few times I've been home to visit - I feel more rushed and ignored after food is served. Their cherry coke is heaven and I'm always looking for a refill but it's sometimes hard to come by depending on your server. Their egg salad is my favorite from anywhere, ever! I will say each location is individually owned and I'm loyal to the Valpo location !!! Stop in and Give it a try. read more

Burgers that last the taste of time. This place has been around forever and it never gets old. Great diner style hamburgers with crusty edges. Good fries and shakes. This place was good before the Hamburger revolution took off and it's still hands down one of the better burgers around. Definitely get more for your money here, rather than 5 Guys. This place does one or two things and does them right. It aint fancy and it aint a hamburger stand its a sit down dinner style place. Clean, well maintained, friendly staff, (wish the cute one was friendlier with me but oh well) and open seating. The best burgers in town. I have grown up going to Schoops and continue to go there every time I'm in town. It is a staple of Valpo and when I come home from Texas, I stop there quite often. Their breakfast is fabulous with some of the best waffles and pancakes around town. Able to get pecans, chocolate chips, etc inside either one. I order their hash browns, extra crispy, with a side of ranch dressing. For lunch / dinner if you're not a burger person, I get the homemade chicken salad sandwich on rye or I'll get the chicken salad melt. The tuna melt is fabulous too. Their chicken fingers with a mix of BBQ and ranch dipping sauce is also a hit. Their milkshakes are the best and I get the hot fudge with REAL peanut butter and whipped cream on top. For soup, get their stuffed green pepper or cream of mushroom (yum yum). Lastly, get the Irish Nachos!!!! Fries, nacho cheese, scallions, and ranch on the side...how could you go wrong?! When I was in high school, this was our breakfast place. Sure, it is a greasy spoon, but it is our greasy spoon! Owned locally, it is one of 2 or 3 in the area. In college, you'd meet up with friends on school breaks here and recently, when I was back in town visiting my parents, came back for another breakfast- Schoop's did not disappoint!! It's got a 50's vibe, offering typical diner food- hash browns, eggs, bacon in the morning, BLTs and grilled cheese for lunch and burgers with fries or onion rings at dinnertime. What I think sets them apart from other diner restaurants is the service and hometown attitude. It is comfortable and very quick. Pleasant service with a smile! When I was in high school, it was usually the owners or their teenage kids that were taking your order, so they really had a vested interest in their customers. It still seems like that today! Green River never tastes better!! I found it bottled at the grocery store, but it tasted like flat Sprite. Try it at Schoop's, or better yet, try it in a float or shake! I got the "Schoop's Mickey Cheeseburger," which is a single beef patty with double cheese. You can get all the fixings, like ketchup, mustard, lettuce, pickles, tomato, etc., upon request. Although the burger didn't come with any side, it was a decent sized burger, which filled me up quickly. The best part for last: the fries. Each crispy fry was cooked to perfection. I just moved here from Indianapolis and did not know anything about Schoop's, other than it seemed like a unique diner/fast-service restaurant in appearance. During my initial visits to NWI I was always intrigued by the diners I would pass on 41 in the Highland/Hammond area, so when I finally settled in up here I decided to give Schoop's a shot. I'm writing this review for those visiting who may want to experience something "Region-y" while up here. The atmosphere is very much a homage to the "Happy Days" culture of the 50s and 60s. At the Valpo location, there's a lot going on in terms of the accoutrements, but along with the traditional diner counter and older music, you really get swept up into another time. The menu offers something for everyone, but they specialize in their hamburgers and fries. I got the double cheeseburger, fries, and a vanilla Coke from the traditional soda fountain they have. The burger is prepared in similar fashion to a Steak N' Shake patty, or Workingman's Friend if you're from Indianapolis. I, personally, like WF's burgers a little better, but this comes very close and definitely is, as Sam Jackson would say, "a tasty burger." Price wise, it's a little more expensive than a quick service restaurant, more like a typical price you'd pay for a burger at a Red Robin or other restaurant; so reasonable for what you're getting. Overall, it's a great place to get a Region experience at a price that won't break the bank. Definitely recommend it if you ever take a trip to Northwest Indiana. read more

M'eh. What more can I say about Schoop's? I know people who out of deep nostalgia absolutely love this place. But, I just don't get it. Yes, it has a well-worn, 50s diner feeling. And, it's generally very clean, which I guess is a plus for a greasy spoon such as this. Although others have complained about spotty service, my experience has been pleasantly average. I really can't say much positive about the food. The burgers are just a half step up from fast food--thin, mealy patties fried in fat on a spongy, white bun. I give them slightly better rating because their breakfast is decent. Their biggest advantage is that they are open earlier than anyone else in the area, so they are great for crack-of-dawn breakfast meetings. But, when push comes to shove, there are at least two dozen other restaurants in the immediate vicinity I'd rather eat at. read more

It would have easily received 4 stars from me, but almost $60 is a bit pricey for 4 burgers, 2 orders of fries, and drinks. That being said - all in our party were happy with their meal. I have eaten at a number of Schoop's restaurants since I was a child. From childhood to when I was a young adult, I frequently ate at the Schoop's in Calumet City, IL. I went to a Schoop's in Chicago for the microsecond that it was actually there (Irving and Damen) and then mostly to the Munster IN Schoops. I consider Schoop's a regional treasure, one that I sorely missed while living in Sacramento, CA (though the Squeeze Inn Burgers made almost equally satisfying Burgers). I have often thought or fantasized about Schoop's serving breakfast. I happened upon a Schoop's in Valparaiso and was pleasantly surprised that it served breakfast, which is noted on its outside marquis. Of course, this Schoop's serves the typical Burger fare that the other sites do, but also has a pretty full breakfast menu with omelettes, pancakes, waffles, and the like. I ordered "#8" with one egg, one pancake, and one bacon for $3.49 and a side of hash browns ($2.19). All was very good. Let's face it some places don't even do eggs respectfully. So, I'm happy when an egg tastes like and egg and so on. The pancake and hash browns (well done) was amazing. This particular Schoop's has a definite small town, honkey tonk feeling to it. It was 3/4 full, yet pretty quiet, no irritating din. There were also patrons roaming from table to table because they knew each other (I did say small town). The 5-6 year old girl sitting with her mom in the next booth was singing along with a country song that was playing over the speakers. I'm definitely not in Lakeview (Chicago) or Midtown (Sacramento). I highly recommend this Schoop's for breakfast. I need not sing praises about their burgers. I had breakfast here this morning. I got biscuits and gravy with eggs and hash browns. If you ever get biscuits and gravy here you'll never get them a second time. The gravy is was obviously canned. You'd be better off getting the tube Biscuits by Pillsbury than these biscuits at Schoop's. I like their hamburgers but the breakfast is second-rate. read more

I love this place. I've been a few times while visiting my girlfriends childhood home, and this is the best 'basic' burger I've ever had. They smash the patties to give the edge a little crispiness but they don't lose any of the juiciness that you sometimes get when using thin patties. They have a few variants, but the regular cheeseburger (or double or triple!) is the way to go. They also have a variety of syrups to add to your soda if you know to ask. The locals know about things like the 'green river' but they will make you a fantastic cherry or vanilla coke as well. The service is fast and nice, and the place is cheap and clean. read more
