My second experience here was with my friend Tracy G. whom has a review that I agree with. But I would just like to add that my mac and cheese was not what I was expecting. It was the rave on here and on their website but wasn't anything more than baked mac and cheese. I regret not adding any ingredients, which I believe would make it better. My first experience is what brought then a star down. I went here with two friends because we live right down the street. It was a gorgeous day and we were starving! We decided to sit outside on the patio which was great for people watching I might add! The service was horrible! Our waiter was nice, but I think it was the kitchen that was so slow. The food was not coming out for any of the tables around us. When you're starving and you're not even there to have drinks it really makes the time seem like it was moving slower. It was nice that they did give us a percentage off for having us wait so long for our food, but it really didn't make me want to give them more stars! I did feel like I needed to give them a second chance....so it was worth giving them that chance. Most likely I won't be going back soon! read more

We went to the Harmony Grill before a show and chose it because it honors the Public Radio Member Card for 2-for-1 entrees and because the Veggie Chili Mac looked tasty. The place was about a quarter-full when we arrived at 6:45 pm on a Thursday night. It filled to about half-full while we were there. Service was just right, our waiter was attentive without being annoying. Our entrees arrived almost immediately after finishing our appetizer of tater tots. We were never left waiting. The Veggie Chili Mac met our expectations. The mac and cheese itself was rich and flavorful, nicely browned on top with breadcrumbs. The chili was actually underneath. It's not the best veggie chili I've had, but it has plenty of flavor, if not much heat. Still, the combination worked very well and was a good filling meal for a chilly November night. There are several vegetarian and vegan items on their menu, besides salads, and several meat items are labeled as being available with a vegetarian option. So the next time we have an occasion to be in Lakeview we will stop in again. read more

I've only been here once for brunch, but I enjoyed it enough to review it now. My group and I shared an order of beignets, now I'm contemplating a trip to Nola just to eat my weight in those little gems. I wished we had ordered the large portion since service was slow and I was starving. I went with the New Orleans Benedict and was very happy with the quality of the crabcakes and Hollandaise sauce. We had our rehearsal dinner here and it was a fantastic setting, especially for out of town guests. It really is a slice of old school Chicago. The upper room right between the bar area and Harmony Grill is great, air conditioned and a perfect space for 35ish people. They do have a very steep staircase to get up and no elevators, but our older guests were pretty spry and had some help, so that was a non-issue. The food was great and everyone complimented us on both the appetizers and dinner. My favorite appetizers were the bacon wrapped dates and the cucumber sandwiches. We got the southern style dinner option and it was a hit with everyone. They do have basic choices for dessert but we brought in our own from outside which they had no problems with, and even had empty trays waiting for our spread. Price wise, it was reasonable but on the upper end of the budget. Room rental itself isn't bad, and the appetizers on their own are ok, but once you start adding everything together, it can get about as expensive as a wedding itself! They can make it as fancy as you want - we had linens on the tables, real silverware and glasses, plates, etc. However, make sure you mention this and even put it in your contract if you want the fancy. We came the day before and confirmed linens on the table, but there was a mix-up on the silverware and plates, so make sure you have it all down and confirmed. DATE/SEATING TIME: We went here on Wednesday, 2/15/2012. We arrived around 5:30pm and had no trouble getting seats. We were there for a concert that night, so we figured we'd just eat before the show. FOOD: On Wednesdays they offer their mac & cheese for half off. So, my wife and I shared a chicken sandwich and an order of mac & cheese. The sandwich was really good. Juicy chicken and just a solid sandwich. The mac & cheese had a ton of options. Lots of "add on" possibilities. We asked our server for some popular combinations and settled on a basil and goat cheese combination (at least I think that's what it was). The mac & cheese was good, but not great. I think the goat cheese may have thrown off the taste of the other cheeses that come standard. I'd be very interested to go back and try some other combinations because I think the mac & cheese has some serious potential. It's also a very big portion. PRICE: the price was great. I don't recall exactly how much, but I remember thinking I felt like we got a great deal. MUSIC VENUE: We saw Ingrid Michaelson and the show was awesome! It's a tiny room and feels so intimate. The sound was great, you can get right up to the stage, and the temperature was pretty comfortable. We were really glad we got to see the show. I recommend Schubas for both food and music! read more

Was on the fence as to whether to give this 3 or 4 stars. I decided to be nice and go with 4. A friend of mine and I were looking for a place to eat after seeing an afternoon play on a Sunday, and both being a bit broke, I checked to see what Groupons I had that were in the nearby neighborhood. I had a couple, but we decided on Harmony Grill. Neither of us had ever been there before. It was unusually warm that day, so we opted to sit on the patio out front. The staff was very friendly and just attentive enough, not overbearing. We ordered the roasted garlic hummus for an appetizer. Came with pita wedges and diagonally sliced pieces of cucumber and carrot. The hummus was average, but acceptable. If yo want real hummus, you pretty much have to go to a Middle Eastern Restaurant. But this was OK. My friend ordered the honey chicken brie sandwich, which I did not sample, mostly because he devoured it in less that 5 minutes. He said it was extremely good though. I had less of an appetite that day and all the sandwiches and entrees seemed like too much, so I opted for a bowl of the vegan tofu chili. It was excellent. Could have been a tiny bit spicier, but it was still good. Chunky, hearty, full of beans and veggies. It was served with tortilla chips which were average (I was kind of disappointed that it wasn't served with cornbread, as one would normally expect.) The only real (minor) complaint that I have about this place, it that while we were sitting outside, it started to rain. It went from a slight drizzle to pouring within maybe 10-15 minutes. The staff never offered to seat us inside. And when it finally did start pouring, we had to grab our remaining food quickly and dash inside. Once inside, the staff ignored, didn't ask if we needed help, so we had to seat ourselves. We had had to leave our water glasses outside because it was too much to carry, staff did not offer us fresh glass. They almost seemed oblivious to the fact that we had moved. All in all though, there service was otherwise good, the food really hit the spot, and we got a great deal with the Groupon. I would go back to this place. read more

Came here solo for breakfast, wanting to try something new on Southport. So, I walked past the other very fine breakfast establishments a few blocks North of Schubas and gave it a shot. Having said that, Schubas was still able to impress me with a solid breakfast. I sat at the bar and ordered French toast and bacon. The bartender was very friendly and the food made me very happy. Definitely a different scene from the strollers/families at some of the place north on Southport (which normally would be me, too), as well as the foodie-type breakfast at some of the other places (which would also normally be me). Sort of seems like a sleeper breakfast place unless I just timed it right. Which is perfect. You can get a very tasty breakfast from a straight-up menu w/o much hassle. Oh, and you can also drink a fine bourbon with it. If, you know, that's your thing... (or any other drink, since they have a full service bar). And yes, that's my thing. Don't judge. read more

We joined friends on a recent Sunday for a bluegrass brunch at Schuba's. It was a good time: the music was pleasant but not overwhelming, the food was OK, and the service was attentive and cordial. I had migas; it was OK, though the texture was a bit gummy and the flavor not as multidimensional as I prefer. Others at the table had omelets of various configurations, and all seemed pleased. Came here on a Sunday around noon, expecting it to be fairly busy. Surprisingly, it wasn't too crowded, which makes the fact that we waited for 20 minutes to get WATER and a drink order in, crazy! We had to pull a guy over to do so. Waited another 10 minutes to get our drinks (not water, had to ask for that again) The food was super tasty (smoked salmon Benedict and breakfast combo plate) and the bloody Marys were awesome! I would never think of going here, but my friend and I wanted a place to meet half way for brunch. She lives way up north and I live in wicker park, so I looked up brunch places on yelp and came across this place. I thought we were gonna wait forever to eat, but we didn't. I got the chilaquiles and they were deliciously spicy, and everything I expected. They came with black beans and pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole. The eggs were scrambled with fried tortillas and they were perfect. I ate the whole thing! My friend ordered the blueberry pancakes which were sweet goodness. This is one of my favorite places to see shows. If you're lucky to snag a table in the bar area it's a great spot to wait for the show to start. The food is good, the beer isn't terribly over priced, and they have a photo booth! The venue itself is a very intimate space and sounds great. I've seen The Books, Rosie Thomas, Rocky Votolato, Damien Jurado, and Asobi Seksu here. I came to Schuba's to see an Okkervil River show about 3 years ago when I first came to the city. I loved this venue, I think it may have been the smallest space I've been to (I think the second smallest was the echo in LA), The Okkervil show was outstanding, the acoustics of the place arent exactly out of this world, but I dont think that's what Schuba's is all about. It was quite an intimate show, and the crowd was quite into it. I had an outstanding time. Verdict: My favorite small venue. read more

Harmony Grill has good food, but it's a bit expensive. I love the location, but most of the time when I head to Shuba's/Harmony Grill, I end up noshing on the awesome bar food at Shuba's, next door...for a lot less dough. They have a good wine list, and a good beer list (duh, the bar is next door!). For the Southport corridor, I liked how unpretentious it was. What to say about Schubas? It's a great place to see a band, though it's not that often that I've seen great bands there. Make sense? They've got an awesome space, adequate beer selection, reasonable prices, and a back room for music so that you can just chill at the bar if you don't want to see an opening band that sucks. The thing they do best, in my opinion, is music. The best small-venue acoustics around without any blocked views is what makes this place stand out. They've also got a booker who knows how to book eclectic small-venue shows. The schedule is heavy on the folk and indie pop-rock side with bursts of international bands and themed nights/bands. If you're looking for Dave Matthews, go to the United Center. If you're looking for the super hot newcomer or the established indie artists, you'll probably be going to the Bottle or the Riviera. That's not to say that Schubas doesn't book bands like Okkervil River, but they're more likely to mix things up a bit so that it's not all Okkervil River, and it'll be Okkervil's sophomore or junior album touring. The pricing is also incredibly reasonable. Most shows are purchased straight through Schubas Web site, which means avoiding absurd Ticketmaster surcharges. There is, however, a $2.00 Schubas ticket charge. That's nothing to complain about, fer sure, but because hard tickets are not printed and all tickets are will-call even this itty-bitty charge seems questionable. Maybe it's paying for the will-call dude or a sound tech? Who knows? Last, transportation to Schubas isn't the best. It's a simple walk in my hood, but I could see how depending on the Belmont bus would be tedious after a concert. Brown line is three blocks away. It is, however, a great location for biking with plenty of well-lit spots to lock up bikes and a vigilant doorman always wandering around out front. The only real complaint: I've never had a horrible experience with service, but I've had many, many blah experiences and some that bordered on robotic. It's not Subterranean-awful by any means, but they definitely need more bartenders on busier nights. Overall, a great place to see a show, but bring a flask if you need frequent watering. read more

Not a bad brunch spot... The beignets are decent. Not like new orleans makes em.... but good nonetheless... For entrees, I had the eggs New Orleans... basically a crab cake eggs benedict. No complaints but it wasnt overwhelming. My husband got the Migas... and that was a big winner. Seemed like an odd combination for a breakfast dish, with red beans, sour cream, avocado and a spicy red sauce, but it was delicious. Next time I go, I will definitely order this. Schuba's is one of those places that makes me glad I live in Chicago. As far as being a venue goes, it has some of the best acoustics in the city, after Auditorium Theater. Every show I've ever seen there sounds perfect.. like every band was caught on their best night. Not a complaint in the world. Also, lovin' the Jay Ryan posters all over the walls connecting venue to the restaurant. The restaurant attached Harmony Grill is great too. I've only ever been there for brunch, but I've never been disappointed. They've got great unique dishes and the flavors are always fresh. Came here for my sister-in-law's birthday bash where we had the upstairs party room to ourselves. It was really great. We had one bartender who really took care of business, was relaxed, and friendly. Apparently it wasn't too expensive to rent the room, and they let us come in to decorate and were helpful with everything. Harmony Grill is the restaurant sister to Schuba's. It is a solid neighborhood spot with very good grub, especially for brunch. A word that defines this place is cozy. When I eat brucnh at Harmony Grill I normally go for the breakfast half of the menu and I generally go with the southwester fare. Chilaquiles are rock solid but not too spicy. Corn cakes are awesome but be ready for carb overload. For dinner I generally stick to sandwiches. Honey Chicken Brie, Bufflao chicken, and the burger are all rock solid. Mac & Cheese might be the best thing on the menu. At the end of the day I give this place 4 stars as the food is good and the vibe is great. It is an affordable little neighborhood spot with a wonderul vibe. As an aside, Schuba's please get better beers on draft! You seem to be a place that would have more good beer, but you miss the boat here. Carrying a few Goose Island's and a Bell's is nice but try to get creative and try some other craft brew's, it would really add to the charm of the place! read more

We decided to go to Harmony Grill before a show at Schubas. Since we hadn't been there before, we decided to go early, so we got a great parking spot in their small lot and no waiting for a table. The service was excellent. Since we had tickets to the show and a reservation for the restaurant, we received a free mac 'n cheese appetizer. HEAVEN! I would highly suggest the mac here. It's one of my top 3 favorite mac 'n cheeses that I've had ever. The menu is full of interesting/upscale pub food. The crab cake panini was a big hit with my husband, and I enjoyed my skirt steak pita. The steak was flavorful, but maybe just a little tough, which is a nature of the cut of meat, I guess. If I had to do it all over again, I'd just get a second appetizer of the mac...it was that good! The prices were reasonable, especially for Chicago. Check in on yelp mobile and get an extra discount on your bill. I would definitely go back for a pre-show dinner. read more

Such a cool bar! The food is pretty solid as well. They host comedy shows, live music, or something of that nature in their backroom area where there is a stage set up. During the weekdays, they rent the stage out to School of Rock students for them to come out and perform for their friends and parents.(neat idea to get the community engaged and keep the place live) I stumbled here for lunch today and did not leave disappointed with my, rather unusual, bar food decision..... Grilled Ahi Tuna Steak with Cous Cous. The chef knows whats up! Cooked to perfection, in the best light combination of flavors, that entree was amazing ! The bartender was cool and was attentive. Combined with a variety of specials and beers on tap, this makes for one stellar venue- a Classic American (Chicago) Rock and Roll Bar. P.S. They even have a condom dispenser in the men's room. My wife and I went to see a late band on a Saturday night. We had called ahead to find out about seating for the show. We were told that if we showed up 30 minutes before the show we should have no problem picking a good seat even though it is general admission. We also read some of the Yelp reviews and went on their website to see how the food was. Reviews are pretty good and it sounded like they had plenty of items to choose from. So, we showed up about two hours before the show so that we could get a "bite" and have time to get a good seat for the show. As we approached the bar the doorman held the door for us. We quizzed him about seating for the 10:00 show, which he told us that there were no seats..standing only. I told him that my wife had some back/hip issues and would have a hard time standing for a long period. He told us that there may be a pew off to the side. Strike one! We then asked where we could sit to order food. He informed us that the kitchen was closed due to renovations, and had no real recommendations for a close place to eat. We had called ahead and been on their website several times, and there was never any mention of this. And we had no car since we took an Uber to get there. Strike two. We found a small table in the lounge area and ordered drinks. While we were waiting the bar became more and more packed and so loud that we could barely communicate with each other, but it is a bar, so I can give them a pass for that. While sitting there we noticed a printed piece of paper by the front door that showed the band we came to see would actually not go on until 11:15.....not 10:00 Strike three. We ended up eating our tickets and pushed our way out the front door. One bright spot: our waiter, DJ, was extremely nice, friendly and accommodating. KEEP HIM!!! Over all a very bad experience which could have been easily avoided. No food, no seating for the show, and a much later showtime than listed on their site. We won't be back. read more

The last time we were at Schubas, I gotta admit it was a really good time. We arrived a little before 10pm, and the upstairs area where a friend of ours was performing later in the evening was closed. While we were waiting we grabbed a couple drinks at the downstairs bar and before you knew it, we had convinced half the people there to "Comeon upstairs and listen to a jam". Around 11, we were finally let upstairs where the party was getting underway and Chris and Tony were rollin out the beats . I gotta say the sound system was pretty freaking awesome what with the electro nice and fat in our ears. The bar staff is always top-notch as well, never pretentious or snobby, they are true Chicagoans. After coming here for 8-9 years, I have to say that I really like this place. Great place to see a band. The room where the band plays is rather small and the bathrooms are in the bar area so be prepared to hold it in or else you'll have to fight your way out and back in again. We saw the Waco Brothers here a while ago and it was a great time. It's standing room only during concerts except for one bench along side the north wall. The only bad part is it's hard to find a place to park close by. We ended up parking so far away we hailed a taxi to take us to Shubas front door. Still it's a cool place. read more

I have to be honest, I went here for a show, not for the beer. The show, however, was great. It's a nice, small setting. Tickets weren't too costly, and the atmosphere is very casual. Seating was not an option in the actual concert, but the bar is connected, and they even serve food. Overall it is great, but since it's a bar, most shows are either 18+ or 21+, so defiantly not so great for highschoolers who want to see a band... read more

Schuba's rocks! I love going here to see bands or have a drink. There's almost always a decent band playing, and the cover is not usually ridiculous. The rock room is an old theater, so the acoustics are cool, and the space is pretty neat. Pretty small bar back there, though... This is probably my favorite live music tavern in the city. This is best place to get up close and personal with local bands and larger, more famous touring bands. The shows are intimate and the alcohol is pretty reasonably priced. The atmosphere is fun and the area is great. Tickets for shows are never priced too high and you can get their Macaroni and Cheese! I've never actually ordered anything else on their menu and I can't imagine why I would. Their mac'n cheese is the best I've ever had. You can order it straight up or add two additional items like chicken or various veggies. Great selection of beers as well. I may branch out and try more of their menu, but until then I will reserve a 5. read more

Saw Seawolf here last week and it was such a great show! First, the waitress in the bar was attentive and friendly but not overbearing. It wasn't too crowded yet so we got a table and ordered a few beers (great selection, more points) and split a fish and chips. The food isn't anything to write home about, but the spicy mayo that came with the fish was pretty good. The best part is that we asked if the show was sold out and if the waitress could point out who to talk to about getting tickets and she one-upped it by putting our name on the list herself (the guy was running around and apparently hard to catch, so she just did it). Then, the guy at the door was incredibly friendly and when we walked up to buy our tickets he said he was glad it all worked out and we got in. Way friendly. After all that we didn't have to close our tab because the waitress was running between the bar and the stage so we could keep ordering from her. Add a photo booth and the fact that our tab was totally minuscule considering we ordered food and several beers. Top it all off with an intimate musical experience in the small side room that was crowded but never felt too warm or uncomfortable, an amazing show (I love Seawolf). This may have just become one of my favorite places to see music. read more

Attended a wedding rehearsal dinner here - at a bar? The upstairs party room is cozy, comfortable and appropriate for the couple who met at a bar. The food was SO good. A much better choice than a fancy banquet meal - the mac and cheese and eggplant parmesan was my favorite. Bartender was attentive as well. This bar is a neighborhood bar and I walked here to watch an NBA game. The drinks are reasonably priced and the food is good bar food. I was with a group of 8 people and we found a place to congregate immediately. The waitress was attentive, albeit the smaller size of the place helps. One thing is, it was a little difficult to watch the game as there are only 2 TVs and they aren't that big. So, while we enjoyed our time, we just wished they upgraded their TVs (especially the one by the front door) Overall, I would go back again to grab some drinks and snack food. I didn't know much about Harmony Grill when we decided to head there for brunch so it was our mistake to not look at the music schedule to see if there was a children's series that morning. There was. And the place was jammed with parents and kids and loud. Warning: Check to see if there is a children's series on Saturday before going. We ordered a bloody mary and beer but since we had a Groupon we were charged full price for the bloody. Hm. Really? The bloody was good and came with a chunk of cheese, slice of salami and pickle. He had the Honey Chicken Brie and I got the Turkey Chipotle Club. I asked to substitute the side for some mac n cheese which I had seen someone else order, but was told they couldn't allow for the substitution because we were ordering off of the brunch menu....But it's after 12 and I just saw an order go by and I wouldn't mind being charged for it....? The food was ok not over the top fabulous but ok. The side of potato salad wasn't to my liking but everything else was fine. OK is not a bad thing some days. We'd go back and try it again for lunch or dinner. read more

Went to Schubas for brunch last Sunday, and we had a really great experience. We arrived at around 12:30 and were seated right away outside, a nice surprise for a Sunday brunch, but perhaps it was a bit later than the norm. The service was great, our waitress was very attentive and my water was constantly refilled. The food was also great. I was able to try the Migas and the Cinnamon French Toast. I thought the Migas were amazing! Red bean based, which I love, but a really good balance of everything, I was very pleased! The french toast was also pretty tasty...the two together were a great balance, but I definitely liked the Migas more. Overall, a great experience, and with a 15% off coupon, this was an extremely reasonable brunch...I paid under $10. Mark my words here: If you want to go to an intimate show with great acoustics and stand within a yard stick from the band, Schubas is your place --- AND --- Schubas is my favorite place to see live music. The venue holds around 150 - 200 people, the beer selection is good and you always leave feeling like you've just paid $15 to attend a private show for you and your friends. What a Deal! I sat here. I never sit at shows. But here I sat. They have a bar in the front part of the venue which is rather narrow and though when you enter the concert hall it's still narrow but bigger. It wouldn't be a very good place for a dancey show in my opinion, (I consider a dancey show something like Infected Mushroom) but for light jamming it's great. I saw Casiotone for the Painfully Alone the other night (I've been Brokeyotone for the painfully jobless) which was a particularly chill show. There are a few tables for 2 people each along the left hand side of the room, and a wooden booth-like seating area that spans from one side of the room to the other. Tables are separated a couple feet from each other on this side, and sharing tables is simple and unintrusive. I sat on the far end nearest the doors and the sound table and was able to throw my feet up while I sat in the corner nook. Believe me it was a beautiful experience. There is a waitress that walks around with a smile on her face and a small bar in the back of the room. Not all of the beers served are in the small bar though. I went out to the main bar to buy a glass of Matilda. It was a little over 8 bucks. Considering it tided me over with a nice buzz and I only needed one beer, it was worth the price. However, when the bartender first told me how much it was I blinked a couple times. It wasn't a big glass, but served its purpose. I can't make a statement on any other drinks. Overall I had a nice time. The acoustics were pleasant, the stage looked like a small play could have been preforming there, and though there was plenty of room to stand (though in the back it's hard to see the stage) I was very comfortable with sitting on the room long bench. I'm considering seeing a post rock concert coming up which is playing one day at Lincoln Hall and the next at Schubas, and after experiencing both venues I'm more interested in seeing it at Schubas based on atmosphere. I haven't been a big drinker at shows lately. Based on drinks, I would probably go to Lincoln Hall. As well as a better shot at getting up front by the stage. If you're taking photographs at Schubas, you'll have much more intimate shot opportunities however. It all depends on what you plan on doing, seeing, and drinking! read more

My golden bird-day was coming up back in January. It's important to know that recently, I've become obsessed with mac and cheese. I had read that Schuba's Harmony Grill houses some out-of-this-world mac and cheese. I decided that being the spoiled brat I was, I was going to have my party there, all other places be damned! I called a week in advance and reserved a table for more than 10 people on a Friday night. Schuba's called me back the next day and told me that they were going to have a concert that same night, and so they were worried that the venue would get crowded and that my group wouldn't be able to stay for as long as we wanted. To make my group feel comfortable without any pressure to leave early, they were going to move us to the private party room upstairs, and they were going to waive the fee for us. It was glorious!! The party room upstairs is wonderful. I would've put down money for it if I had to because it is totally worth it! The room gets its own cocktail waitress. She was awesome in keeping track of everyone's food and drink orders. The room also has its own bathroom, which is important for people like myself who have weak bladders. The only downside was the huge flight of stairs, but the workers there were able to help up one of my friends who wasn't able to use the stairs. Awesome people!! Now on to the food... They had a great selection of drinks; I can't really comment on the cocktails, but my rum n' cokes were delicious. And I had the mac and cheese with scallions, mushrooms, and tomatoes, and it was PHENOMENAL. I am telling you, if you crave mac n' cheese like I do, you would do yourself a disservice by not having the dish at Harmony Grill. The dish here is NO DOUBT in my top 2; too bad they don't tell you which cheeses they use, but whatever the recipe, they are damn pros at it. My golden birthday was awesome, I'm so glad I had it at Schuba's! It was also my first time there, but it sure as hell will not be my last! (PS I couldn't tell if I should've put this review under Schuba's the venue or Harmony Grill, but decided to go with the latter since it seems like Harmony Grill isn't getting that much love!) read more
