I did not time to take it off before I got lambasted by the hostess. As she showed us to the table and as I look in front of me guess what I see?? Our group of 6 stopped in for dinner on a Tuesday night without reservations. They have seating in or outside. We sat at a very comfortable table for 6 inside. Some of the best German food I've had in the US since living in Germany! We had the jagerschnitzle , tender cutlets, tasty mushroom sauce, perfect spatzle. I missed not having a brotchen or pumpernickel bread. The dessert we chose was a trilogy or 3 samples of the regular sized desserts. The creme brulee was perfectly done. Chocolate cake smooth and rich flavor without being too sweet. Quick efficient service. Nice table setting. Surprisingly nautical decor with American music. If you're looking for a authentic German food, this is the place. Beautiful inside, but you may pass it buy. We had the jaeger schnitzel and the maultasche. Jaeger schnitzel was served with spatzle and smothere in mushroom sauce. The pork is not fried with breading. It is served naturally. The mUltasche is a large ravioli with ground pork and spinach, smothered in brown gravy and beautifully seasoned with extraordinary spices. Served on top of potatoes and caramelized onions with gravy. The waitress was very knowledgeable and I believe may be German. Excellent service with a smile. The restaurant had contacted the person making the reservation and informed them that we would be outside eating if we weren't finished at 2p.m. (reservation was for 10 at 12:30). A couple of people in my group asked questions and there is ZERO flexibility (as simple as, please leave the lettuce and tomato on the side of the sandwich--cannot be done)! The prices were very high for lunch. My pork was very "gamey," as well as tough. The spaetzle was good and saved the otherwise horrible meal. Leisa and I had dinner at Schwaben House September 22. We were driving past, and just decided to give it a try. It's a fine German restaurant on Laurens Road, Greenville, SC. The exterior seems small and office-like. The inside was large and decorated for autumn-leaves, pumpkins, etc. The lighting was soft and warm. The table settings were beautiful. Even the salt and pepper shakers had a Euro modern twist. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and authentically German. My wife got the pork loin with mushroom gravy on spätzle, and a dinner salad. I got the pork Cordon Bleu with a cucumber potato salad and pumpkin soup. Her salad was a tangy crisp blend cucumbers, carrots, beans, cabbage, and greens served with house dressing. She liked her dish enough that I didn't get a bite. My pumpkin soup was served in a ceramic pumpkin! It was very hot--frothy on top and creamy and earthy below. Topped with roasted pumpkin seeds. The Cordon Bleu had a perfect light crispy crust, tender roasted pork loin, ham, and buttery melted cheese. Generous in portion, perfectly plated. We looked at the decadent dessert menu... but decided we just couldn't. With tip we ate for $90. read more

German restaurants (rather than biergartens serving up German cuisine) aren't the easiest to find, and that's even more true for spots serving up regional cuisine. Schwaben House has some classics (wiener schnitzel, jäger schnitzel, roasts) along with some Swabian regional dishes (schwaben pfanne: pork medallions in a mushroom sauce, and maultasche: meat dumplings with cabbage). We had a 730 reservation for outdoor seating and lucked into getting the patio to ourselves. We each went with a soup and an entree (maultasche soup and wiener schnitzel for her, pumpkin soup and jäger schnitzel for me). Service was speedy and the server brought out a tiny snack before the soups arrived: fleischsalat (meat, mayo, cucumber, seasonings) on a cracker. It was a tasty start to the meal. The pumpkin soup was savory and served, fittingly, in a pumpkin tureen. The entrees both came with a house salad (a mix of baby greens, julienned carrots, cabbage, potato, and green beans in a light vinaigrette. Unfortunately, the mains arrived about two minutes after the salads. No matter: that jäger schnitzel (grilled pork loin in a mushroom sauce over fresh spätzel) was tender and delicious (all the better washed down with a draught of Warsteiner Dunkel), though the spätzel was a little bland. First time at the Schwaben House in Greenville, SC and regrettably it will be my last. The good: * The restaurant was clean and the atmosphere was very nice. * The service was excellent and the staff was friendly. The hostess was a bit pushy when my wife walked in with her cap on, she immediately made her remove it, not that big of a deal though. The not so good: * The restaurant appears to be marketing itself as upscale but in actuality it is decent German food at best. * Prices are high for the average food with SMALL portions, examples are: * $9.00 for a pedestrian side salad with only the house dressing for a choice. * Bread & butter are not complimentary and listed as a side for a price. * I ordered a draft beer (a regular sized beer) and the price was $10.00 * Entrée - Schwaben Pfanne $32.00 was mostly dumpling and three very small and thin slices of pork loin. * Entrée - Pork Medallions $33.00, again three very small (and dry) medallions. Overall just an underwhelming experience. It is a shame because with a bit more effort this could be a great place to enjoy German cuisine. read more

Welcoming German-speaking staff; good food and beer (at a price!); pleasant room. I called up Schwaben House from my car early on a Friday evening as I was road-tripping down to Atlanta, and they were kind enough to give me a seat at the bar, despite my black t-shirt and jeans (they would prefer business casual). To my surprise, the staff was chatting in German amongst themselves (cool!), although everybody's English was perfect when they checked in on me. I suspect that that server who asked, "Is there anything else I can get you, honey?" may have been less German, and displayed less of the German reserve than the others. The menu looks beautiful, with lots of fusion options, but, frankly, I was there for the German food. I had a tasty German beer and the beef roulade. The beer was there instantly, and the entree arrived pretty quickly, as well. It was tasty. The spatzle was good without being life-changing, and red cabbage was especially good, and the roulade itself was fine, with savory, thin meat, and flavorful filling. It probably wasn't worth the $35 price, at which point I'd expect a bit more refinement; perhaps you're paying more for the pleasant room and white table cloths and efficient staff than the food, or perhaps I chose poorly from the menu. And, with so many other German restaurants, I'm kind of amused at the all-female front-of-house staff. Dunno what's going on there, but service was very good, so I guess it works. I'd happily return to try some of the Swabian dishes, but also I'd like to keep trying out some of the other German restaurants in town (I guess we can thank BMW for supporting all of these places). read more

First off the Schwaben House, should be on the list of the Top German restaurants in the Southeast if it isn't already. Upon entering the restaurant you'll find the decor and setting to be a very classy and elegant. As a head's up to my fellow Yelpers, the Schwaben House is definitely a place where you'll want to call ahead to get a reservation as they specialize in fine dining and have a strong local following. Menu items are made fresh in-house and it's not uncommon for them to sell out of particular dishes at popular times. On this visit, we walked in on Friday night and were lucky to get a very cozy table after initially taking seats at the bar. As an appetizer, we had a delightful serving of Maultaschen, which is a special from the southern region of Germany. It's best described as a triangular shaped ravioli with a delicious filling. For our meal, we selected a bottle of Dornfelder wine, which was sweet and smooth as it tasted like a gentle grape juice. Pairing it with our Jaeger Schnitzel and Rouladen (A Roasted Sliced of Beef Rolled with a Pickle in the center) entrees made for a complete meal as good as what you would find if you were in Germany. For dessert, we selected a Kaesesahne, which is German for cheesecake. Unlike any slice that I've had before, this dessert was light and filled with an incredible cream that ended the meal in perfection. I haven't been to Schwaben House in over a decade and every time I think to stop by they are closed! So a few weeks ago, I decided to treat myself to a nice German dinner. The folks here are very hospitable and the food is magnificent. With an acclaimed European chef in the kitchen, it's no surprise the dishes are so good! I had the Wienerschnitzel along with the potato salad and season vegetables. I also had a little sample of the Fleischesalat ("meat salad") which I was told is cubed bologna with onions and pickles! It doesn't look like much from the outside but the attention to detail inside...from the service, the food, the decor, down to the bathroom sink... is so exciting. I'm a soup fanatic so that was the best part of the meal for me... PACKED WITH FLAVOR! For my entree I did the Dijon crusted salmon with potatoes. I studied abroad in Germany & I still dream about those potatoes. Perfectly cooked & a generous portion (I took half home.) I paired this with a lovely dry Riesling from Germany. I had the apple aperitif then coffee with apple strudel w/a vanilla custard to dip it in. I European whip cream... not sweet like here... just light, whipped goodness. Outstanding meal at the Schwaben House in Greenville, SC ! Our party consisting of 2 locals, 2 from Nevada & one from Austin, TX came on a Saturday night. We were seated in a beautifully decorated and comfortable dining area. We each ordered pork in one form or another and collectively had red cabbage, spaetzle, house salads, and mushroom sauce/gravy. All of the food was superb. It was a hearty meal, but not heavy as German food can be sometimes. After our meal, 2 of us shared a Bailey's Ice Cream Sundae & the rest sampled the mini desserts. One party of two ordered the trilogy which was 3 mini desserts to share. They selected caramel mousse, cappuccino mousse, & crème brûlée. We thought the mini desserts were a great idea. No one had drinks. Service was prompt & efficient. Prices were a bit high in my opinion - but the quality was definitely there, so it was ok for a special dinner. Well, my wife wanted to come here for her birthday and we were being joined by our son and his wife. My wife and I arrived at 5:15 for a 5:30 reservation. The couple in front of us had reservations and apparently may have been 15 min late but the "hostess" was pretty sure they had no reservation because she couldn't locate their name. After about 5 minutes, she located their name and off they went. I felt like this may be a sign. We were told our reservation was 5:30 so we needed to wait until then. 3 more parties come in with 5:30 reservations and in they go. My son arrives and at 5:30 we were allowed to go back to our table. His wife---who is 5 months pregnant---had not arrived yet. The Nervous Nellie hostess comes by before we ever got our drinks and announces the table has a 7:30 reservation. It's not even 5:45 yet. I will cut to the chase. The "hostess" comes by 2 or 3 more times to remind us about the 7:30 reservation during the time we are there. That by itself was enough for my wife and I but we are with somebody. We ordered food and it arrived when my DIL arrived. She opted to not eat. I ordered the Jäger Schnitzel and I doubt that meat started out more than 3 oz and was about the height of my fork tines flat on the plate. I did get about a half pound of Spaetzle but for that price I expect more meat, less Spaetzle. The sauce was kinda of bland as well. My wife got the Wiener Schnitzel. I knew she was not enjoying it when she said we shound have gone to Hendersonville and when we got in the car she said: Well, I'm not doing that again. I agreed. Great unique German restaurant, unlike any one I have been to before. The atmosphere is more of an elegant one than most traditionally chaotic and more casual German restaurants. Most employees are German, so it has the authentic flare. The food is delicious! They offer a few specials, and have the regular menu as well. We were brought a complimentary appetizer, risotto ball, that was very good. The maultashen salad and jagerschnitzel we ordered were amazing.
