Paid a first visit to House 509 Bistro, a charming and cozy restaurant located just off N Hwy 101, well north of downtown Greer. The name "House 509" has a fascinating backstory. Chef G, who spent his early life in Haiti, lived in a region with the 509 area code. After some time in Miami, he moved to a home in Greer with the street address "509." It was a natural choice for the restaurant's name. Upon arrival, our reservations were honored promptly. I requested to change tables, and Ashley was more than happy to accommodate us. The menu is designed around flights--of food and wine--making it difficult to choose from so many appealing options. We opted for flights that included scallops, shrimp and grits, mahi mahi, and mushroom ravioli, along with a side of lobster bisque and chocolate cake. Each dish was awesome! Chef G stopped by our table to say hello. The intent behind the name House 509 is to create a homey atmosphere, and the staff does an excellent job achieving that. This is such a delightful hidden gem. My husband even asked me to not post a review as he's trying to keep House 509 to ourselves! Too late. I see we're not the first to enjoy their outstanding food and service. It started with making our reservation. The online system was only allowing for a 5:30pm time slot for our party so I decided to call to try for a later time. The call went to voicemail but by the time I hung up I got a call back from Chef G himself who was happy to accommodate us as requested. We were seated promptly and our server was wonderful. She explained the food and wine flights and answered our many questions with grace and humor. She was attentive throughout the evening without being overbearing. We all enjoyed our meals having chosen the Crème de la Crème and the House 509. Everything was fresh, flavorful and each with its own unique twist. It was a delightful evening. READ BEFORE YOU GO: This was my First and Last time going here. I want to highlight the following: Service, Food + Portion, Ambiance, Price Point, and Location. Service: service was very good and everyone was kind. It was a busy night so I understand when things get forgotten. I ordered a 6oz wine (was charged for 9oz though...) and did not get it until someone else inquired for me. Food: Food was flavorful and everything we had was tasty. I liked the flight style but someone told us before we got there that it was enough food to split so we did that. Server did mention there would be a split fee but never specified how much. I do recommend that they tell people that without making them ask. Never in my life would I imagine a $20 split fee. Had I known, I would have just gotten a full plate or appetizer. Portions: The portions are small. Even if I had one to myself, I would have not been satisfied. Even with the dessert it was a small sliver from a bigger cheesecake. For a bistro and not an upscale restaurant, I expect I fat slice. Ambiance: It is not an upscale restaurant. The dining is not as intimate as you would think and I feel this more successful as a lunch spot or selling the items tapas style individually instead of a forced flight. Price Point: The food was good but for the same if not lower price point, you could get a very nice dinner in downtown Greenville at Halls, Jiannas, or Rick Erwin's and eat similar flavorful cuisine. Location: This place is in the middle of nowhere (not throwing shade) but with a combination of the price, portion, and everything else it's simply not worth it. My wife and I went to House 509 after I met one of the staff at the Inman playground right before Thanksgiving. She was very passionate about her restaurant. We made reservations after reviewing the restaurant and menu. We were intrigued with the "meal flights". This is a beautiful but small venue. Very substantial bar with many wine choices and local micro brews. We made our connection with our young lady that I had met previously. We had the best service, food, wine, that we ever experienced. We have been to high end restaurants. Our appetizer was a molten brie with cherry tomatoes, olives, and sliced bread. My wife received a vegetarian chef special flight and i had the Crème de Le Crème - scallop over delicious rice, rigatoni pasta with spicy sausage, and filet mignon over broccoli deliciousnes. We had a very good wine and one "flight" of wine. Our dessert was the apple and ice cream drizzled in caramel. But I will tel you that Ms Rachel provided Five Star Service the entire time. The Chef Guichard came out to check on our meal. Amazing to have this happen. We gave him amazing feedback. Service - Excellent. Food - presentation and flavor - excellent. I've heard great things about this place and finally had the opportunity for my husband and I to try it for ourselves. I'll start off with a positive note...the charcuterie board was very good for a starter. I had the La Crem De La Crème flight which consisted of Tuscan scallops, Vodka Penne and Filet Mignon. My husband had the BYO Seafood flight which consisted of Shrimp and grits, Tuscan Scallops and Blackened Mahi. The filet was perfectly cooked and the shrimp and grits were excellent. To our disappointment the scallops were chewy, the penne pasta was overcooked and mushy, and the blackened mahi was very dry. The portions were small and the prices are big. We were both very disappointed as we so wanted to love this place, especially from hearing all the good reviews. Sadly, I doubt we will return. read more

An amazing dining experience! We started by enjoying the new Bread Board with 3 dip sauces. I had the superb Crème de la Crème dinner trio entree (scallops with rice/penne with beef & sausage/ sirloin steak) accompanied by the Sonoma Coast wine trio. My wife loved the Gluten Free dinner trio (lobster tail/salmon/chicken) with the Big Bold wine trio. And we split a huge Spiced Apple Tart with ice cream. Everything was AWESOME! This is a really neat flight style restaurant where all the food is in perfectly portioned flights which offers variety and is the perfect portion to make a full dinner - just the right amount of food between the 3 dishes of each flight. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, and a very nice and accomplished chef who came by to check on our table a couple of times which was a great touch. He trained in the Caribbean and France and that comes through in his dishes!! It's beer and wine only with a great wine list. We tried wine flights (all delicious and paired well with dishes). Our group tried the sea bass, pasta, chicken and steak and everyone enjoyed all their dishes! My shrimp and grits flight was phenomenal with 3 unique and different styles, low country, creole and bbq shrimp- couldn't decide which was my favorite. I don't know where to start. We landed at the airport and called realizing we may need a reservation for 5 and hoped getting in wouldn't be impossible or difficult. They were lovely and told us they would have a table ready. After finding out our rental car would be an hour I called back and asked if it was possible to work with that. The owner was the one who took my call, he told me, we'll absolutely, if your coming from the airport you need to eat, let me know if we need to come get you. (I want to believe he was just being polite but after meeting him you'll realize he probably would have ). They had our table set and ready to go, they explained how their menu worked and got us all situated. We all passed our wine flights around which we're delicious. After explaining that we had someone with celiac they knew exactly how to make sure they would be good to go! It's such a unique idea of flights of food with your drinks. Our server was lovely and when we asked for the chefs dessert board she didn't want our celiac friend left out so she brought him his very own dessert. After paying, and walking outside the owner and chef ran out to thank us for coming once again personally. The hospitality and love the people here have for their customers is absolutely incredible! What an amazing gem hidden between Lyman and Robinson lake. The wine selection is everything a wino (like myself) needs in their life. ABSOLUTELY adore the trio aspect of the menu. I had reservations at 6:30 and did not get food till 8. The food is priced very high and honestly I don't think it is worth it. I would recommend spending that money at Select in Greer. read more

The second time we have been to this place and it is definitely our favorite restaurant in the area. It is well off the beaten path but the drive is well worth what you will experience. From the moment you walk in, until you leave, House 509's staff is there to ensure you have the best quality of service possible. We love this place because all their food is ordered in Flights. We started off with the Caprese Baked Brie which was phenomenal and served very hot in a cast iron skillet. We ordered the O'Neal Village Favorite flight which was Sea Bass over lemon risotto, the chicken penne tossed in a creamy vodka sauce and the caramelized filet mignon over asparagus, onions and glazed heirloom carrots. Wow, we found out favorite flight! The medium rare steak that melts in your mouth and sea bass cooked to perfection that you don't need a knife as it flakes apart on every bite. Finished off the dinner with a creme brulee cheesecake and it was so fresh and delicious. The food is so good you can only experience it for yourself. We have ordered several different flight options and they have always come out amazing. According to server has been open about a year and a half. Simple, nice decor. They serve wine flights and food flights. I love, love, love the concept. For example, I ordered the Fins Flight. It consisted of a perfectly cooked cod over a great sauce. In the middle position sat another perfectly cooked piece of fish, this time Mahi Mahi over a small bed of nicely seasoned rice. On the right end of the plate was another perfectly cooked fish, this time a soy-ginger glazed salmon on delicious grits. Only thing I didn't care for was an entry on the bill for a service charge. I'm assuming for credit card usage. That's a cost of doing business and it's a lot less tacky to just build the fees into your product. Just to start my wife and I are huge food critics, due to where we came from. She had several coworkers rave about this place. So I booked our reservations. We studied the menu before we arrived and knew what we wanted. We enjoyed our meal, lots of different flavors. The chef was super nice as well as our waiter. The turn off was when we sat down and noticed the prices had changed. We ordered the Caprese Baked Brie to start which was changed online from 16.00 to 20.00. It was good, my wife didn't care for the oil in it and to me it needed a little more flavor, but wasn't bad. Then for my entree I ordered "the house". Online it was 40.00 but in-house the price was changed to 60.00. (Wow... a Huge jump). It was loaded with flavor, but to be honest it wasn't a 60.00 dish. If this place was in the heart of downtown Greenville the prices may not have seemed so bad. Location is key. I personally thought it was downtown Greer, but when I pulled it up on maps I told my wife; "you know this place it out of town". Then when I pulled up i immediately was scared due to it being a small store front. After going in the help wasn't the building but the first impression of waiters and the chef. They do go out of their way to make you feel at home. The chef definitely has talent, but downtown Greer or Greenville with the right place, he could easily get that amount for the plates. Outside of town and the location I believe they will price themselves out of business. Would definitely recommend at least once. I do wish the best for the chef and his dream. We scheduled our company Christmas lunch at short notice for about 15 people. Not only were they able to accommodate, but the food was phenomenal. I personally got the filet and you could cut it with a spoon. Our server was very attentive and the food was sent out in a timely manner.
