We were walking by this place yesterday after having brunch at The Local (another great establishment in Bellingham), and though we were stuffed, the lure of German sausages was just too strong. The three of us decided to sample a combo plate since we had just eaten. The sausages were tasty, the potato salad was fresh, and the sauerkraut was strong and flavourful. My friends said it looked like they have an actual wood fire (or charcoal?) oven in which to cook the sausages but I didn't confirm. The girl who helped us at the window was super nice even after we told her we were just sharing a plate since we were already full. Good food and friendly people ... we'll definitely be back another day to eat a real meal. read more

We had a great time due to the group we were with. This is a good place if you are with a big group, as the picnic tables have room for about 12 to 14 people at each table. The outdoor TV is a nice touch, along with an outdoor bean bag tossing game. The Schweinhaus Biergarten has some great potential, however they need to work on a few flaws. Food was overpriced and mediocre at best, but they had a decent selection of beers. "Oh, the cook won't like that"... So I ordered a sausage, the Cajun sausage specifically. Then over time as they brought food out to our table they made a mistake and gave the Cajun sausage to someone who had ordered their cheddarwurst sausage. The person it had been given to had been sick for several days and had a cough and runny nose, she actually had posed for a silly picture with the hotdog in her mouth. When the waiter discovered the mistake he simply slid the "used" Cajun sausage plate down the table from in front of the sick person and gave it to me. At this point I was a bit disgusted, there was no way that I was going to eat that Cajun dog. When the waiter returned a few minutes later, I explained their mistake (not my mistake), and I asked for a new sausage. The waiter responded with the statement of "Oh the cook won't like that", and the waiter was very bothered to have to get me a new meal. Perhaps they should adjust their attitude to be there to serve the customer, not to serve the cook. Finally when I did get my meal, the sausage was pretty bland for a Cajun spicy sausage. My wife ordered the Schwein Wings plate. When ordering, she asked what the Schwein Wings were, and the waitress responded with "they are just wings". Two wings and coleslaw, celery and carrots for $8.50. At this point we were expecting chicken or at least meat from some animal with actual wings. When the wings arrived they were pork, not really sure what part of the pig, but it was a bone with a chunk of pork on it, perhaps half a shank? The pork wings where okay, not very well sauced, but not horrible. Next the bill. When the bill came, the Schwein Wings plate which was advertised for $8.50 had actually been rung up as $7.82 + $5.97 for a total of $13.79 which wasn't right. It took some time but the wait staff finally corrected the error. Just be sure to check your bill in case they add on as extras to you didn't order. Restroom facilities: Their restrooms consist of four porta-potty outhouses. They were not particularly clean, and they did not have any place to wash your hands after using the restroom. It is nice to be able to wash your hands after using the dirty porta-potty units. Tip: Bring your own hand sanitizer. The beer was good, and they did offer WiFi services. Tip: Just ask for the WiFi password. If what you are looking for is good beer and atmosphere on a nice day, this is the place. If you want good food this is not the place. I would recommend if you are going to the Schweinhaus Biergarten, that you eat somewhere else first. There are plenty of other good restaurants nearby. read more

Like a half assed German sausage joint. They only have 3 mustards. Normal yellow mustard, Dijon, and stone ground. They need to get some that arent so normal and bland. Sauerkraut was dry and had no moisture. Which is not how I like my kraut. Maybe try adding some moist cold kraut or hot moist kraut. Sausages were tiny and lacked flavor. Like 1/2 the size for the price you pay. The beer was good. Thats about it. This place should either redo their menu or stop serving their shitty food entirely. Never walked away satisfied with food there. Pretzels and mustard was literally Rold Gold hard pretzels with yellow mustard. I dont reccomend this place to anyone unless you enjoy bad overpriced food. You could make better sausages from haggen for cheaper. Its like they tried to make a sausage house and then they realized that none of them are german and couldnt replicate leavenworth sausage houses. Avoid unless your drunk and rich. read more

Love this place for what it's doing. We wanted to watch the Sounders game on Sunday and they had big screens showing the game while sitting in covered area outside. There's great beer and food. I ordered the vegan sausage and potatoes plate. Pleasantly surprised to find awesome (not greasy) tasty potatoes with the sausage and fantastic mustard choices on the side. I really wanted to love this place...... I should have had a clue when they were unable to describe their beers. Undaunted, I ordered anyway (German beer!!). Within a reasonable time, my friend and I received our food. The cook (?) had come back to explain he needed to change the keg for my beer. Near the end of the meal our "waitress" checked in, and I, without beverage asked for the yet undelivered beer to be cancelled. She told me "fine, I can refund the cost of the beer." The table service lacked structure. No hint of base customer satisfaction was even attempted (example: I'm sorry about that, could I offer you a larger beer in something we have available?). Since customers prepay they might think about dropping the attitude, especially as in this instance I wasn't complaining, just asking for a refund for something I never got. The two stars? Sausage was good. The cook was friendly. This place woulda coulda shoulda, but didn't. read more

I like their food and beer a lot, pretty cheap and tasty. Staff tends to be great, but by goodness are they understaffed. Especially on busy nights, I'm amazed they do not hire more people. Covid-19 update on schweinhaus: they're very stern about the laws of the state for corona which we greatly appreciate! But the workers are rude to a point where the experience going there, relaxing, and having a beer with less than 5 friends is so awful. Corona isn't going away anytime soon, so if Schwein decides to keep open I think they need to have a staff meeting and re-evaluate how to be respectful to customers during this time. Our group of three had a dog with us & we would have occasional people stop by & talk & pet the dog, the people got yelled at & told to leave, which we understood- but our group got yelled at too when we respectfully were sitting in our seats the entire time & obeying the state & schwein's rules. After our beer, we left & decided to come back. Although our group was 6, we asked if we could get split up which was fine but we were told "no" because "we would get up & mingle" which made no sense at all.. We basically got kicked out by the guy in the front (tall, brunette hair, beard, glasses, red bandana) just by his conscious decision even though our 6th person left & we had 5 people. He was very disrespectful & rude! I don't think he handled the situation correctly or in a well-mannered way at all. I've seen patrons complain about the capacity limit but as we are in a pandemic, patience is key! Every time I go out and do errands I have this guilty pleasure of swinging by here and getting a half liter of their latest Amber ale.... and of course a cheddar bratwurst with tons of sauerkraut. I get to sit in front of their fire while it cooks bomb smelling food and maybe watch the game if it's on! As long as the weather isn't windy, this is the place to be. If it's rainy you're covered and you get a little space heater to huddle under, or if it's sunny it's always friggin packed and there's lots of games to play in the back! read more

I only give this place 3-stars. It would be 5, but the service.. well they are lacking in that department. It took 15 minutes to order our food, and that's with 3 people in front of us only. The way they have the "Beer & Food" board setup needs improvement. While they have a good selection of beer, you don't know what kind it is, there is no description, which hold up the line .. a lot, and only a tiny space at the bottom for the food. Might I suggest that the board be used Only for the Beer choice, giving more room for a small description, and put the limited food option on a smaller board, and hang it next tot the order window. It was some-what busy, and they only had one cook, so it took 1.5 hours to get our pretzels and sausage. Which was understandable considering he was doing all the work, and the girls in the order booth weren't doing anything. The girls in the Booth don't come out to see if your doing ok, instead they sit in their texting on their phone. As a former bar manager, and bartender, when you know food is taking a while, the best way to keep a happy customer is to check on them, even if they are not ordering anything. They had plenty of time to text on their phones, but no time to even suggest more beverages to the customers. Come on girls, you should be out their selling, or striking up a conversation to the obvious irritated customers who are wondering where their food is. All in all, the food was Great, I recommend trying it. The beer was Ok. The service needs a lot of improvement. I think this is the only game in town when it comes to biergartens so they can really do whatever they want - i.e. poor service and no real bathrooms. Every time we have ordered food it has been extremely slow and they have messed up the order (at least sometimes we have gotten extra food.) And with the amount of money these guys are making, they really should be able to install a real bathroom. read more

On a sunny summer night, this place is a dream! Atmosphere? Awesome! They have live music, huge games of Jenga, multiple TVs and plenty of other fun! One of the nights they had a pie eating contest! Beer selection? Stellar! They have IPAs, Porters, Pilsners.. something for every palate. They even have a really great cider for non beer drinkers. So if the beer selection is impressive and the ambience is so much fun, why three stars? The food is vastly underwhelming. With my liter of cider I ordered Plate 2 -- Bavarian Pretzel, cheddar Bratwurst, 3 types of mustard and sauerkraut. The mustard and sauerkraut were really delicious! However, I can't say the same for the pretzel and the bratwurst. The pretzel was very clearly frozen which made it beyond dry. A pretty good place to get some imported wieners. In the summer the place is packed, especially on the weekends. The downside to this is that you will be waiting a long time to get anything. My wife and I have eaten at Schweinhus about a half dozen times and think it has outstanding brats. We also enjoyed the chedder dog. Both are really crispy on the outside and juicy inside. I tried the Cajun and found it a little spicy for my taste. Haven't tried the other sausages.They serve good potatoes. The sauerkraut, in my opinion, is lousy but you can ask the server to 'hold it' and they will add few more potatoes instead. read more

I have been going to Schweinhaus for as long as I have lived in Bellingham. I love the beer, food, and the atmosphere, but last night I had one of the WORST experiences I have ever had at ANY RESTAURANT. On the two large TVs the movie "Team America" was showing. This is a racially charged and trashy movie that any business with any kind of class would not show at their establishment. After watching the obviously racist scenes play on these two massive screens and discussing with friends how we ALL thought this was inappropriate, I went to the owner to express that I felt uncomfortable and wanted to know if there was anything else that could be put on. He laughed in my face and asked me why I felt uncomfortable. I told him that I felt the movie was racially charged and inappropriate to be playing. He and a friend continued to laugh at me and proceeded to ask if I was a part of ISIS. I have never experienced anything like this. As a patron, I believe that my requests should have been respected, but instead I was absolutely disrespected, laughed at, and insulted. By playing this movie and reacting in the way he did, the owner of Schweinhaus made it very clear what his stance is on certain issues (which he is entitled to do) and that he is uneducated, insensitive, and rude. In a town that I feel is progressive and forward thinking, I never thought that my concerns about this playing would turn into an attack on me. I will never again be a patron at Schweinhaus, and I know my friends will not either. I hope that others see this and also decide not to support a business lead by someone so rude, so unable to accommodate the simple request of a patron, and who has no class. read more

Just be bundled up because it has great Tv's and beers, but you need to have on the proper attire to remain happy. TLDR: Terrible terrible service, but good atmosphere. I liked the space. Open air and lots of games and TV's. Dog friendly is a plus. Beer selection is good. The service wasn't bad at first, but the way they handled their mistake was terrible. I ordered a beer and sausage. It was good, and I tipped a little. They served it within a few minutes. I came back to order another sausage and pretzel. Since the first order was good, I gave a better tip. Now I wish I could get a refund and not have given a good tip. They lost my order. They didn't realize that for 30 min. My friend that was with me ordered about 25 minutes after me and they noticed that I hadn't received my food when he got his. They said my order didn't exist. No apology, but said they would get me my food. As I was still patiently waiting they brought out the food that would make up my order and wouldn't even make eye contact with me as they carried it by me. At this point I went to the counter to ask for a refund because we were ready to leave. The woman at the counter was nicer, she apologized, but she didn't know how to give a refund. I asked for a manager and she said she would call them. I returned to my seat, where my food finally arrived (more than 45 minutes after ordered). Recall this is just a pretzel and sausage, and I had seen them make these orders in less than 10 minutes. I did not hear back, so I returned to the counter. Apparently the manager could not be reached, so I left my information for the manager to call me. I left the place without eating my food because we were behind schedule. Three days later I still had not received a call, so I called back. The same waiter answered, and again didn't apologize. He said the manager wasn't there again and took my information again. It is now another two days later and I have not received a call. I will not return to this place. I hope you don't get poor service here, because it will only get worse. They do not care about their customers. Not only could I not receive a refund (for less than $15), I didn't even receive the courtesy of a simple phone call after they took my number twice. read more
