I recently checked out this Scoops location, and like I expected, I got an excellent serving of ice cream! This Scoops is located in Chinatown's Far East Plaza near to a collection of various restaurants, so this can be a great post-lunch or post-dinner dessert option. During COVID-19 times, you order right at the entry (where you pay at a table set up at front), and the employee brings your order to you. I tried the Bianco Bread, which is similar to Brown Bread offered at other Scoops locations with an addition of mascarpone. I paired it with a rum raisin ice cream that included almond and nutmeg, and both ice cream flavors were fantastic. Great ice cream! Ordered a scoop (which actually comes with 2 scoops) to treat myself. The Oreo Cheesecake was pretty good, similar to a cookies n cream but the cookie chunks were very soft. My favorite was the Earl Grey, such a good flavor! Glad I got to check this place out! read more

Yummy Ice Cream place! We came here after having dinner at Oriel down the street. I had been to this complex before to eat, with Howlin Ray's and Chego to name a few. It was 8:00 and they had a sign saying they'd be back at 8:10. So we walked around and saw a bunch of people in Howlin Rays. When we came back, the worker was mopping the floor and let us in. I've loved scoops since the heliotrope location. I had to stop here for ice cream to help neutralize the hotness in my body after trying Howlin Ray's hottest spice level. I got the blanco bread and chocolate Guinness. For each scoop, you can get 2 flavors, which is a pretty good deal. Apparently, they have certain flavors only at specific locations. I really wanted brown bread, but this location had blanco bread. As an icecream queen, I've been wanting to try this place for a while. Overall, very decent icecream, not as thick or rich as I usually like, but generally pretty good. I think it's pretty comparable to Haagen Daz, maybe a tad less thick. I sampled legit like 10 flavors, and the worker was very accommodating, although the samples kept getting smaller as I asked for them HAHA. But still, props to him for putting up with me. I ended up getting the Bianco Bread flavor, since I wanted to try something unique. The Horchata Oreo flavor was amazing as well. It seems like they don't have a consistent list of flavors and they change here and there, so I'd be down to come back and try the new ones. Another note is that the prices here are great. We happened to eat dinner in the same complex as Scoops and remembered it from the Buzzfeed Worth It video. We excitedly went in to cure our FOMO. I had the Bianco Bread and the Red Velvet Oreos. It was...ok. I guess I value creaminess and richer flavor in my ice cream more than the creators of Scoops. I appreciate their creativity in unique flavors, but in all honesty, it was a pretty mediocre experience. Even the decor was fairly bland despite its attempts to be hipster. I almost missed this location with all the hustle and bustle of the howlin rays line but I'm glad I was able to find it! I decided to come to this location because the flavors on yelp looked really unique and interesting. When I got there, there were only a few unique ones but you might just have to get lucky with the seasonal flavors. There were around 10 flavors to choose from and I'm really glad I went with black sesame. It was super creamy and nutty! I'd definitely come back to extinguish my tongue after the fire of chicken wings next door. Parking: we went during Chinese New Year so it was pretty hard to find street parking. Scoops is situated snuggly in Chinatown next to Chego! What's nice is that there's hardly ever a line when you go. Now Scoops is good but the texture doesn't sit quite right with me. Their flavors are unconventional but seem to work well for the most part. Yeah I can't remember any of their flavor names but it checks out. The texture however is a bit off for me. It's more icy feeling and less creamy feeling; I prefer an ice cream that smooths over your taste bud and drowns it out rather than ice cream where you can feel every ice crystal. But do know the Scoops in Chinatown is also a little lower quality than other Scoops locations. Despite all that is said, Scoops serves as a great dessert after eating at one of the adjacent restaurants (if you don't want to travel out too far anyway). read more

Yay! I went to the one in Chinatown instead of the OC one! Although, I think I might prefer the OC one better? I think there's another location as well :/ This is across from Howling Rays in the ex-Wing Hop Fung plaza. I went in and the guy behind the counter was really nice and asked if I had been there before. The Santa Ana one, I reply. After that, he gave me scoops. Scoops of ice cream. Samples. The sad part is, I forgot what I got. I know I got bianco bread because of the similarity of it to brown bread that the Scoops OC has (very similar). It's crunchy and puts sugar in your mouth :D It doesn't really taste like "bread" in the sense that you'd think :P Nevertheless, something that is good and the flavor that doesn't change. However, the rest of the flavors do change and they have a decent amount of other flavors. The sad part is, I remember getting 2 flavors in my $4.50 cup, but alas, I cannot remember which flavor. My fault for not putting in flavors in pic and for writing this so late :( The guy behind also talked about Howlin' Rays as well and how some food critic raved about it in the LA Times, and asked me if I had went before, and what's up. Awesome guy. Nice guy. If you are passing by here on the way to the burger place, you're gonna finish this in about 5 minutes. Oh, Scoops, what am I going to do with you? I mean, why must you be so good? They serve creamy ice cream with unique flavors; they even have your favorite ice cream but with their on twist. This past weekend, we got: Coconut Chocolate: You can definitely taste the coconut AND chocolate without either one overwhelming each other. It's like magic.... they know magic! Lol This was my favorite one so far and I hope they have it again the next time I go back. Salty Vanilla (???) with Oreos: This was like a unique version of cookies and cream but ...wait for it....a little bit saltier. The one scoop size that they offered actually serves two different flavors which is a good idea since you can try more of their ice cream. I've tried their bianco bread ice cream before and while it was creamy, I just didn't like all the seeds or whatever it was. Overall, super friendly service, really good ice cream and unique flavors. Four stars for now but I'll have to come back another time and I might just give it five stars based on consistency. ************ UPDATE 5/3/15 ******************* 4.5 stars Okay, so as mentioned, I'd update this place based on consistency and I've been coming back here a few days in a row or every weekend so far (with some breaks in between, of course). I'll still list a few of the many flavors I've tried but just know that they update their ice cream and so it might not be there when you come here! - Strawberry Jasmine (love!) - Jackfruit Lemon (only tasted the jackfruit but was so good) - Caramel Oreo (no hint of caramel but still acceptable) Also, if you love the taste of coffee but would still like something sweet to drink, you HAVE to get the super shake. It has butter pecan (and maybe caramel??) ice cream with some coffee. I don't even really like coffee and I have to say that this was just too good to pass up. Applause for Scoops opening up a spot in DTLA! Now I don't have to make the trek all the way out to the Westside for some wonderful ice cream. They're extremely smart for opening up a spot in this particular location. When you have the likes of Ramen Champ, Chego and Pok Pok Phat Thai in the same plaza, diners will likely look for something sweet after their meal. Just like their other locations, they concoct very unique flavors daily. You may see a few flavors one day but you most likely won't see them again on your next visit. Pineapple Guava Sorbet -- It was such an easy decision. It was the first flavor I sampled. The pineapple guava combination really works. It's mostly the pineapple flavor but you can taste the hint of guava. The sorbet was extremely soft and quenched my thirst with every bite. Make sure you sample all the flavors that catch your eye. What I like about this place the most is that they allow you to get the kids scoop. I can never finish an adult scoop and I barely finished the kids scoop here so I really appreciated their leniency. read more

Scoops in Chinatown is the fourth location, a franchise owned by Chris G. They're next to Chef Roy's Chegos and Chegos used to be in the Westside not far from the third Scoops location. Why Chinatown? Chris says it'll go through a "great revitalization" in the next few years and I find that to be true finding myself in Chinatown more often not only for the food, but for the art galleries and events like Chinatown Summer Nights. Have dinner or Chego's (or whatever you're in the mood for), have some Scoops ice cream, and then walk around Chinatown. So, today, I tried the Hazelnut Chai and Salty Oreo. The great thing about Scoops is that they have hundreds of unique flavors. I mainly go to the Scoops on Heliotrope, the original site, and, of course, the ice cream is consistently good among all the locations. It better be because they make their batches from the Highland site where I have yet to visit. Chris will have benches in the store soon, but in the meantime there's just two tables and you'd probably walk around Chinatown enjoying the ice cream anyhow. Well, today's pretty warm so I actually hung out at the store for a little bit and got to know Chris and this location a little more. In the short time I was there, he was pretty friendly and enthusiastic about the ice cream. "One scoop" is $3.25, and their "one" really is two scoops, kind of making you feel like you're getting two for one. If I remember correctly, one actual scoop from other ice cream shops is about that much, so it's nice that at Scoops their one scoop is actually two and you can have two different flavors. Yes, I came here after Howling Rays. I got a scoop of pistachio and a scoop of something else. I apologize as I don't remember the second flavor I got and neglected to write it down. But I'll say that this ice cream is a perfect cool down after Rays. The ice cream is on the thinner side, not super creamy or decadent. I also found some ice-crystals in the scoop. So while the texture isn't the best, its nice when your mouth is on fire. The flavors are also dull, scant pistachio pieces, and as I said I don't even remember the other flavor because it was forgettable. Despite my criticisms regarding taste and texture, I did enjoy the ice cream treat. Maybe it was because my mouth was burning, but I would go back to try more flavors. read more

Scoops is located in Chinatown at the same plaza as Howlin' Ray's. The interior features bright colorful walls with fun patterns. While browsing the flavors, I told the staff that I heard about them through Buzzfeed. He told me that all the ice cream is made in their other location and delivered to this location. After that he introduced a few flavors and offered me samples. The Pina Colada Sorbet (his favorite) tasted fresh and a little tart. After trying a few flavors, I settled on something more creamy. Bianco Bread * Very creamy and it had little pieces that added a nice crunch - he explained it as cereal pieces that don't go soggy Strawberry Coconut (Vegan) * Tasted like fresh strawberries with a hint of coconut * Reminded me of the Trader Joe's Strawberry Ice Cream made with Coconut Milk I wish Scoops posted their daily flavors online. I was looking for Strawberry Balsamic Vinegar and Yuzu Lavender but the flavors were not that unique on the day I visited. A kids size group which in my opinion is good enough, is only a tiny $2.50. There are flavors that are gluten-free as well as dairy free. Their flavors rotate and I made in house. Some of the ones that I have had include brown bread, Bianco bread, Maple brownie, green tea and brown rice, kabocha with cinnamon, a few different coffee varieties and probably several more. Everything that I have had here has always been good. Whenever one thing runs out, there's a possibility that it will be replaced by something totally different, or another pan of the same thing. You just have to keep on eating that ice cream to find out what's next. Sometimes, however, they will just run out. Boo! Although the front door can be challenging to get to, I think this store is probably in one of the best spots possible with the howlin' ray's chicken spot across from them. Coming here and having to wait in line for over an hour for chicken, we stopped in here a few times. My husband and brother and I all shared ice cream during our wait.
