My first visit to my Aveda salon in Morningside Heights.. my hairdresser, Randy, relocated from the Columbus Avenue location to here. First, location: This salon is near to Columbia University and it's a wonderful area to be in; little farmers market open across the street, on Thursday and Sundays so grab a bite and head to Aveda. The salon: on Second floor accessible by elevator or stairs. As a long time client it's nice to be greeted by my first name and extremely feel welcomed. The space is warm and the little area that one waits between washing hair and getting hair cut is very comfortable. The Aveda tea is soothing and nice to sip as you wait. The Product: I've used Aveda for over twenty years from the Rosemary Mint collector to Cherry Almond to Be Curly to Nutriplenish.. they're all wonderful and organic. The hand and foot cream are healing for dryness. Hairdresser: Randy is really talented, personable and really great! Shout out to Corba for the gentle hair washing. Carpio is a hidden gem. A senior stylist with the experience and skill who could charge you 3 times as much elsewhere, he always does a beautiful job. He can take what you have in mind and adapt it to your hair and face and you come out looking great every time. Had time to kill so stopped in for a haircut. Not sure who cut my hair, but she did a good job. The blowout made me look a little bit like the midwesterners at the conference I was attending, but after my locks settled down I felt downright glamorous! I still have no idea how she managed to whip so much volume into my thin, generally un-buoyant hair! Of course, it doesn't look half as good when I blow dry it or let it air dry, but that is generally the case. With such reasonable prices, I will definitely be back. read more

I have been getting my hair cut by Carpio here for the past eight years. He's fantastic - consistently great at giving me a good cut, no matter the style. I've done lots of different cuts with him over the years (different lengths, layers, side bangs, etc.) and inevitably get tons of compliments, no matter the look! As a woman of color, it's always been daunting to find the perfect stylist who can understand your hair texture. If you have 4a-4c hair, I highly recommend going to Anyelica! She's been doing my hair professionally since my big chop, and through many haircuts, and color jobs. She's also taken the time to explain what Aveda products I should be using in my hair and they never disappoint. I've never gotten any heat damage either! I went there as a walk-in for hair color and they did take me; everyone was OK, not overly friendly, not rude. I guess the days of offering you coffee, etc are long gone. Everything was fair, but the music--horrible!!!! Maybe rap, who knows..I was quitely going nuts listening to this stuff. If you have long hair and want to keep it long, or if you want a precise haircut that looks good, do not go see Norman for a haircut. I asked for 1.5 inches off, he cut off 6 inches in excessive layers on one side of my head, and 5 inches off on the other. The cut was uneven and shoddy, and had to be fixed by another stylist, Sheri, who did a great job evening out the cut, by having to cut even more length off. I came in with luscious long hair asking for a trim and left this salon after a weekend of fuming and crying with short hair that sits right below my shoulders. I hate short hair on me. Norman, if you read this, please learn to listen to your clients and please give the tip I gave you to Sheri. You don't deserve it. Recommendation: don't talk with your clients. Focus on cutting hair. You could not do both with me and got distracted by conversation. Thank you to Sheri, for fixing my cut as best you could, and thank you to the manager Robert for refunding my cut and letting me vent a bit at his salon. Let the summer of the bun begin. Not wearing my hair down until it's long again. Thank you for wasting my time, money, AND for making me hate my hair and reflection for at least the next 3 months. Hm.... an overall decent experience. Not bad, but not great. This was an experience you would expect to have in a salon that is placed next to a college - if you know what I mean. If not, I'll explain. Starting with the physical space. It's a bit dated. Old school UWS look - meaning, it doesn't look like very much has been invested into it. Very basic and bare minimum, but gets the job done. The energy inside the space is young and inexperienced (or so it seemed). I could tell immediately my stylist was not super familiar, or perhaps comfortable, doing a men's cut. I just needed the sides trimmed, but I don't think she understood what I meant. (Stylists - it's okay to keep asking a million questions if you don't understand what the person in your chair is asking to get done) I left feeling unsatisfied with my cut because I felt like I looked like a character from the Simpsons. I would've voiced that, but honestly, I just wanted to get out. I did look over at another stylist doing a men's cut and that looked GREAT! I think my person just needs more training. Do with that what you will. I'd give this place a shot and experience it for yourself. Cheers! read more

Yasa has versatile skills cutting and dying different hair types. They were also able to get me an appointment with in 30 minutes on a Saturday evening. I have been going to the Aveda Salon since 2012. It is always an amazing experience, and I have been blessed to find Carpio as my stylist for the past several years. Even during pandemic times, Aveda has stayed dedicated to the customer experience. They always make clients feel special and they dedicate time and care to you. He does a consultation where he takes in mind to hear your opinions and your thoughts about what you want and then thinks about what your hair can do and what would look best with your skin tone and your hair type and all of that. I've been going to this salon for years and overall the staff is very friendly and accommodating, the salon clean and well-run. I love that they have coffee and tea out whenever you want some. I started seeing Quinn about a year and a half ago. She managed to find the shade of brown color I was looking for, natural but not too dark, after I'd been disappointed by many other salons and stylists. She also manages to make my thinning, fine hair look full and wavy when she blows it out. She is lovely to work with - professional, solicitous, and with a good sense of humor. I came here out of neccessity - and I'm so GLAD I did! Covid brought about a lot of changes, incl my salon. I had no choice but to come here. But it turned out to be a GREAT experience and I think I found my new stylist and salon! I have super-long, fine, thin, tangled hair. But I am reluctant to cut it all off as most stylists wish I would. When I came here, I was given Jasmine (Jessica) as my stylists. She was wonderful. She listens and does not run off imagining her own thing. She isn't pushy at all. Even if she doesnt agree with you, she realises its your hair, your choice. She patiently went about washing and gently untangling my hair. She then trimmed at the precise lenght I wanted and then gave me a wonderful blow-out. This was HANDS DOWN the WORST experience I have ever had at a hair salon. I would give this a negative star if I could. Let me tell you a little bit about my experience... I went into Scott J hoping to touch up my platinum hair, and left looking like the crown of my head had been dipped in Kraft macaroni and cheese. As soon as they started the treatment, I knew something was wrong. The hairstylist looked nervous and my head was burning. Badly. The first glimpse I got of the hair in-process made me want to scream. IT WAS ORANGE! Not just any orange however. This was cocaine-riddled 1975 David Bowie era orange. Coppery and unsettling...not even David Bowie wanted his hair to look like that, it was an accident on his part! "Are you sure you don't want strawberry blonde hair, haha?" said the hairstylist nervously. "No..." I said. My head was burning more and more. It was becoming excruciating. "I need to take whatever blonde treatment you're doing off of my head, it feels like the skin is burning off." The hairstylist said I just had a sensitive scalp and that's why the treatment was so awful. I started to cry it hurt so badly, and as a model for Chanel and Vogue, I've worn heels so tight that I've lost circulation in my feet, so I have a pretty high pain tolerance. They removed the bleach, and it wasn't orange anymore...it was YELLOW. Fucking. Yellow. Like, traffic sign yellow. I was shell-shocked, and I paid full price, and when I calmed down outside the salon, I noticed burns all over my head. I called and asked for a refund, and the front desk woman gave me so much attitude. Here's the kicker: the hairstylist didn't want to give me a refund, but he gave me the glorious opportunity to have him re-do my hair. As if I'd trust him after that!! Jesus, what a mistake. Scott J is a mess. I still want that refund, because my hair is still recovering. Can I have my $220 back please? read more

I have been coming to this Salon for over 10 years purely to see Carpio! He is the most fantastic colorist and stylist I've ever had (and I've lived all over the world) - and he's frankly a magician!!! I moved to DC before COVID and just couldn't ever find anyone to do what he does - and came to NYC yesterday JUST to see Carpio to fix my hair! He was incredible- and spent nearly 4 hours truly fixing my color (after a 30 minute consultation to figure out what on earth I'd done to it in the past 2 years). PLEASE READ THE IMPORTANT UPDATE BELOW THIS REVIEW. So, I do feel really bad writing this review because they were really nice and understanding, but it needs to be said so that others don't make the same mistake I made. Unfortunately, I had an awful experience here and will need to get my hair fixed elsewhere. I don't think my stylist, Keiyana, has much experience with color. I came in for a brown to blonde ombré. I started off with a dark brown to reddish balayage. I know this is a complicated transition, but for a $350 due job at an Aveda salon, I expected the job would get done right. After the first wash and dry, there were large streaks of blue and patches of orange. She tried to fix it with toner and more bleach, but it seemed like she was in a rush and there is absolutely no blend. It looks like my hair was dipped in a bowl of bleach. Even the blonde color lacked consistency. Parts were light and other parts look yellow and brassy. Luckily, I was not charged for this disaster. I will not be coming back. UPDATE: The Scott J. Aveda team did reach out to me to offer a complimentary color redo, hair cut and botanical treatment with a senior stylist at another location. The color correction by Charlie at the Upper West Side location was wonderful and I am very happy with the results. I do appreciate Scott J Aveda going above and beyond to make things right. I have been going to Scott J. Salon for several years. The hairstylist who i had been using for quite some time had left the establishment. Trying a new stylist involves some risk; if it does not go well one has to leave with the results for some time. I had scheduled an appointment and Carpio was the stylist who was available; I went in with some trepidation. Upon my appointment, I was introduced to a very congenial man. Carpio introduced himself, I show him some photographs of a hair style that I had been using. He took great care and spent about 45 minutes on a men's hair style, cutting with precision. Following my cut, I thanked him and left a generous gratuity. About six weeks later, I returned. He asked my opinion of the hair style and I replied, 'Well, I am back.". Those words spoke volumes because I would have looked elsewhere if I were disappointed. I have been having him cut my hair for perhaps four years minus the inconvenience that COVID inflicted on the world. LOVE LOVE LOVE my stylist Rosey. My hair always looks on point, from the color to the cut. She's meticulous and likes to take her time. The products used here seem to be more gentle/better than other salons, I would definitely recommend it if you have sensitive scalp or damaged hair. On this latest trip, I had a half head of highlights done, an aline cut and some additional BRIGHT underlights (aka peekaboo highlights), It came out great - "professional with a touch of hidden fun". I come roughly once a year because it is pretty pricey but it's worth it and somehow the cuts/highlights grow out great too! Tips: - Book in advance, Fridays are usually pretty crazy - If you're getting coloring and have a sensitive scalp like me, hold off on washing your hair 1-2 days before your appointment and request that they sweetener like Splenda in your toner. This will alleviate some of the stinging/burning. read more
