Avoid Scott-Lee Heating Co. I hired them to resolve an HVAC water leak, resulting in two failed repair attempts, safety liability shifts, and unauthorized charges. First visit ($187): The technician claimed a personal medical issue and required me to provide my own ladder and physically assist in operating his equipment. The leak was not fixed. Second visit (Promised by their office as a $O warranty call): The technician applied a cosmetic putty patch ("thumb gum") to the exterior cabinet rather than performing a mechanical repair. He then completed unauthorized maintenance and added a $385 plan renewal charge on-site. The Service Manager refused a refund. I filed formal disputes for both charges with my credit card company, which returned my money in full after reviewing the voicemail and email evidence. I've had some bad experiences with other companies (charging exorbitant amounts compared to other companies, saying they completed work they didn't perform, etc.). That's not the case with Scott Lee. The salesman came out, saw what we had, and provided a range of options, all of which would have resolved our problem. We selected the one most appropriate for our situation, set an installation date and they took it from there. I called Scott Lee Heating since they service my furnace and AC twice a year, and they had someone at my house the very same day. It turned out I needed a new motor, which they brought out immediately and installed. From start to finish, I was back up and running and toasty warm within about 90 minutes. I used them because they had good customer service up front and a good price and worked with me on my schedule, but my experience was that the workmanship was not reliable. I had two items added to my system, one was electrical, and it almost caught fire the next day, and the other item was related to water, and within a month one of the jew water pipe connections was leaking. Scott Lee installed my system 14 years ago and their service man had cold air blasting from the vents in 45 minutes. The charge was $300. I'm a 70 year old widow that the only thing I know about AC is that it's supposed to be cold. Could the first guy have been over selling? Was I a good target? I don't know. I'm SO glad I called SL. I apologize for this lengthy review. To paraphrase, my opinion of Scott Lee's field workers is second to none. These guys were outstanding and arguably the best that worked on our new build. My issues always involved people in the office and their lack of communication, possibly negligence. Ultimately, it was my final communication with Russ, the owner, and the fact that I still don't have the system that I requested or paid for, that I won't use Scott Lee in the future. We used Scott Lee for a complete HVAC replacement in our last home through their Costco rebate program, and it was an absolute positive experience. Everything ran smoothly, from Kevin M. working with us to spec the system, to the quality of install. I was particular in selecting a Lennox Elite 2-stage Heat Pump, and it was incredibly efficient. I loved that in stage 1 we could barely hear the fan run and it rarely needed stage 2 (full capacity) to keep up. Recently, when it came time to build our forever home, I was confident in choosing Scott Lee again. This time it went much differently. I was connected with Bob Hart to bid and spec the system. I was adamant that we copy the Elite 2 Stage system from our last home that worked so well. The first disappointment was that I could not benefit from the Costco program, as it was excluded from new construction. This would have been a few thousand in savings, but I can get past it. Planning the system was a complex process and Bob was slow to make changes or respond, every interaction seemed to be a bit of a nuisance. Since COVID every business seems to be running behind, and I wasn't in a rush at this point, no problem. The install process starts, Fred and his crew install all of the ductwork, they were spectacular. Of all the contractors that worked on our home, I think these guys take the cake for quality of work and general attitude/demeanor. They come back and install both HVAC systems, ERV, Humidifiers. The new system was loud, air blasting from vents, turn up the TV loud. It did not match our previous 2 Stage system and Scott Lee was called out to slow the blower speed for stage 1 heating/cooling. It was at this time, through their service technician, that I was told the Elite condensing unit installed had only 1 stage. I called and explained the situation to Bob, again "I'll look into it" meant maybe next year or not at all. I was patient but called back weeks later asking for someone other than Bob. I was placed in contact with Russ, the owner of Scott Lee. Russ scheduled replacement of the condensing unit for the one that I actually chose and paid for. A different crew comes and replaces the unit, they were also spectacular. I notice that the unit is a 2 Stage MERIT, a downgrade from the Elite series, and again not what I paid for. I called Russ to explain it was still incorrect. I was told that Lennox no longer makes the Elite 2-Stage, as it went to Variable Speed, so I was downgraded to the Merit 2 Stage. I was never given an option, nor was it communicated to me that the unit I paid for wasn't available. Russ made an executive decision to downgrade it to Merit. Our conversation on the phone went downhill quickly, with utter lack of accountability or remorse. I was told most people wouldn't care if it were Merit or Elite, and that I should be satisfied regardless. Call me crazy, but I prefer to have the system that I agreed to and paid for. The conversation was going nowhere, and another replacement was not offered nor seemed practical. I was frustrated and ready to be done with it all. Russ said he would refund the difference between the unit that I approved and the unit that I ended up with. The check came for $744, which I assure you is their cost difference on the unit and not the upgrade cost to customer, but I was after the system that I paid for, not a refund. Everyone makes mistakes, but the way you handle those mistakes is what truly counts. The lack of integrity shown by Russ and the way this situation was handled is the reason I'll likely look elsewhere for HVAC needs in the future. read more

So happy to have found Scott Lee HVAC. Had never used them until I moved into my current home. Their number is on the thermostat - so when I needed service, I gave them a call - having never found a service worthy of my loyalty, previously. Now - I call them every time I need maintenance or service, and I recommend them to anyone who asks. Today, I had the pleasure of working with their service man, Tyler Coleman. He came out for a maintenance call that quickly became a service call due to one bad wire in my AC. That he was able to find and fix that needle in my AC 'haystack' is testament to how thorough and careful he was. Poor guy had to go up to the attic and out to the yard - and down to the basement, repeatedly - while troubleshootong. I am absolutely certain that some of the other companies I have worked with would have not been as thorough. They'd have given up and said I needed some new expensive equipment - but not Tyler. He found it, fixed it and stuck around to ensure it was cooling and draining properly. Tyler Coleman provided outstanding service and communication - and I'm so thankful to him and Scott Lee for their excellent job in hiring him. When they installed a new HVAC for a home addition 4 years ago, they must have left a small leak in the refrigerant line. Twice I've had them come out to help with problems - once for AC and another for a furnace. BOTH times they charged well over $100 for a 15 minute service visit. The first time was when they told me to replace the furnace filter to stop a vibration on the exhaust blower. Two days later, the shaking/noisy issue returned. I'm sorry, but a filter does not fill so badly in two days to cause the shaking/noise we were experiencing. The 2nd poor experience was for the AC compressor. They told me the unit needed cleaning and he rinsed it with a garden hose. That did almost nothing and 3 months later we had the same no-cold air issue. The fact was discovered when a different AC person came later to tell me it was 2 lbs low on refrigerant. The only way it gets this low in 4 years is a small leak. FURTHERMORE - they installed locking port caps on our AC refrigerant lines. He claimed it is per International Mech code, although 2 other contractors I spoke to said they never heard of it. MY PROBLEM with them is that St. Charles County Mech code explicitly STRIKES OUT the section which requires the locks... i.e. locks are NOT required where they performed the work on my house. They are POOR at customer service. Arrogant when you speak to them about problems THEY caused. He wanted to charge me a $98 service call to come replace the locking caps that they never should have installed in the first place! Absolutely horrible and shady business practice. I believe they installed the locks so that ONLY THEY or select few other servicers could work on the unit. POOR POOR POOR. I'll never call them again. And I'll tell everyone about this shady business practice. They should not apply and lean on code rules as their excuse to "lock" you into using their service. read more

They got out quickly, same day as we called, which is great bc it was HOT and I have two kids. However, they blew $500 of some liquid into my coil system, which made it work for 2 days then back to not working. Had another company come out and turned out there was a huge crack in my coil so all the coolant leaked out. read more

We had a new heating and air conditioning system installed about a year ago. All worked well, but the thermostat they installed does not connect well to our iPhones. We replaced the Nest thermostat which worked well, but they insisted we use their thermostat. After several complaints and visits, we must physically, go to the thermostat to change the temperature. We have many other items in our household that connect to our Wi Fi network, and all other cameras, TV, Ipad, etc., work well, but not the Scott Lee thermostat. read more

We have a maintenance agreement. They did the Spring Maintenance inspection a few week ago. This morning it turned cold and we tried turning the heat on. It didn't work so I called them and they came out in less than four hours. Very professional and he found a wire that had came loose during the AC inspection. No charge. I appreciate the honesty. I diagnosed my problem and even drove to their shop to buy the ignitor I needed bit it didn't fit and I don't mess with gas if it ain't perfect so.i had them come out. The tech had to do some drilling and readjusting but after an hour or so had my furnace working. Just in time for the cold spell we just had. I reached out to them for a simple service call on my 1 year old furnace. It took a total of 3 techs to come out the week of Christmas. It wasn't until the 3rd tech that I received someone competent. I was charged $261.00 for two technicians on two different days to install a $28 solenoid valve on my humidifier, which wasn't even the reason I called them in the first place. In November, 2018, I purchased a new Lennox HVAC system from Scott Lee after interviewing 5 companies. $13,000. The furnace worked through the winter, but the digital thermostat did not & it had to be replaced. The A/C has gone down 5 times since SL turned it on in the spring. The coil has frozen each time & they finally replaced it. Still froze up. Replaced all refrigeration lines. Had Lennox specialist to check it out (I was down 3 hours during oppressive heat). Said I need another part. Left putty all around refrigerant lines & cold air was leaking into basement. Tech said the furnace door would not now fit & duck taped it together. Today, they were to come to add a part. Didn't show up after I waited all afternoon. Was told today they didn't have me on schedule even tho the service manager personally scheduled me. Also told I will be without AC for minimum of 3 hours during installation. Have called salesman twice. No return call. Service manager was rude. I have paid them in full & have no leverage. The were competitive and did a very good job with installation of a new system at my home. Unfortunately, the top of the line, most efficient Lennox system I had them install was a piece of junk. Coil and circuit board failure in first 5 1/2 years. Also, instead of charging what it takes for a repair they have flat fees for repair work. When our a/c seemed fix but was then broken two days later, they assured me there would be no charge for coming back out and made the effort to be there the next morning. We have used Scott Lee for over 20 years and have been very satisfied with them until now. They installed furnaces for us in 1994. In a routine ck up they found a crack in the heat exchanger on one. Time for a new one. I don't believe the salesman was fully honest with me. He sold me an 80% efficient Lenox furnace without any mention of other alternatives for more efficient models. We were in a hurry and busy with sick parents and I trusted these guys and did not do any research. After it was installed I find out about the new EPA regs that are going to require 90% efficient furnaces and that Lenox makes a 98% efficient model.
