Scott's Painting recently painted the exterior of our home and like many folks, it was a fairly stressful undertaking for my wife and I. We wanting to change our lighting, add a new front door, pretty much anything we could do to heighten our stress level. Just to give you an idea, Scott's bid the job in March and the painting didn't start until the middle of August. The delays were all our own doing; the painter was very understanding and accommodated all of our indecision. Scott's Painting is a two man crew and it's hard to fathom how he manages the schedule changes we put him through, not perfect but when we finally settled on a date he was there. There were several changes we made during the painting process and he happily agreed to them or provided a reason for not including it. His attitude and demeanor was one of the reasons we chose Scott's to begin with. It just felt personal and proved to e just that, we got the sort of attention one would expect from a small business. Loved his attention to detail, willingness to explain his process and we are extremely happy with the outcome of the job. We had Scott paint our house in mid July based on recommendation from my father-in-law. We were getting started on remodeling, and just wanted someone who can do the job and as you can tell, most of the painters on yelp have 5 stars, so we wanted to go with someone we can trust. The first part of the job was not bad, we had to point out a couple things at the end like the lines along the ceiling not straight and such, he came back and fixed it right away, so that was good. And Scott said he'll come back and help us do touch up after our remodeling is done. And then it took us about a month and half to remodel the entire house. We took out all the carpet and put in hardwood floors. And quite a lot of other work, such as putting in an island, new back splash in the kitchen etc. When our contractor is finally done, we called Scott to come back for an estimate on the baseboards and touch-up paint. Our contractor patched up all of the baseboards and even textured the places that needed touch up, so all we need a fresh coat of paint. Scott gave us a quote and it was somewhat higher than we anticipated, so after some discussion with my husband, we decided to not use him and do it ourselves, and I believe this is what triggered all the negative experience from then on. on 9/6/13, we started painting the baseboard ourselves. They didn't turn out bad, but we wanted to move in right away, and if we continue to paint by ourselves, it'll certainly take a lot longer. So I called Scott back, and asked if he can come back to do it. He agreed and said he can come on 9/10 (Tuesday), and will give me a call on Tuesday afternoon when he comes over. 9/10 (Tuesday), I didn't get a call until 3:30 pm, so I called Scott and asked if he will still come, the answer was no. I get it, he needs to squeeze us in the last minute, it's fine. And we agreed on he'll come on Wednesday. 9/11 (Wednesday), my husband took time off work, so he can open the door for Scott when he comes over in the afternoon. Waited till late in the afternoon, no call from Scott, none answered when I tried to call him. Finally calls me back pretty late in the afternoon, and informed me he was having equipment problems at another job and cannot come to my house again. He also spent about 10 minutes explaining to me it's our fault we cancelled him in the first place. But we hired him back... He also repeatedly said he wouldn't take the job cuz it's so small if it were other ppls. I expressed my gratitude to him willing to paint for us, but please let me remind everyone, we were going to pay him, not have him do it for free...Anyhows, at this point, he told me Thursday is a possibility. 9/12 (Thursday) My husband and I both took time off work again, and waited till later in the afternoon. No call, no nothing. We've given up on Scott showing up at all at this point. I'm just too tired of trying to schedule another time with him, take time off work, and have him not show up again. You know what they say, third time is a charm. And that's why there are three stars missing from this review. We really liked the service we received at the beginning, but due to the three no-shows, I feel like the other yelpers deserve to know what we went through. I do think Scott is a great person and do try his best, but unfortunately, there are just way too much money to make else where than caring about our tiny baseboard job. read more

We contacted Scott Smiley for an estimate for exterior painting. He did not respond to his online request for an appointment (honestly I find this consistent with contractors - why have an online submission form if you aren't going to ever respond to it?). He did respond to my follow up email a week later and we set up an appointment. Three hours after our scheduled appointment I got an email from him telling me he wouldn't be able to make it and set up another appointment for the following day. Three hours where we could be doing anything other than waiting around for someone to show up. It takes about 30 second to call and say you can't make it. He did show the next day and walked around the property, taking notes, listening to what we wanted, explaining what prep work would need to be done, etc. He said he would send an estimate in a few days. That was over a month ago. So far no estimate, no further contact. Fine - if you don't want the job just send a quick email saying you are unable to submit an estimate. You're too booked up, the job is too challenging, whatever. Especially when you have my phone number, email address and home address - any one of those communication channels would have been appreciated. We had bids from two other painting contractors all facing the same challenges with being busy before the holidays and dealing with uncertain weather but both of them showed up on time for their appointments, were responsive and submitted bids within a day. They were very respectful of our time. read more

Originally we hired Scott's Paining to paint and re-texture the interior of my house a couple of years ago. He had reasonable pricing and was really consultative in helping us figure out what was going to work as part of our remodel. He and his team arrived when they said they would and cleaned up at the end like they hadn't been there. His lines were very clean. The work was fantastic! It was a no-brainer when we decided to have our exterior painted. He came in to take a look at the job. He talked about some of the stucco repairs that he would do along with some of the sealant he would use to help protect our house. Again Scott's quote was reasonable. Update: Yesterday I received a call form Scott who wanted to make things right per my previous post. Admittedly, I fixed most of the issues I've seen after the touchup was done; it was not difficult work, it just was a lot of smart things. However, Scott's willingness to get things corrected as well as valid fact that the contractor I had was impeding on his work has made me realize that perhaps I was not completely fair with my previous review. We have to say that this gets as good as it gets b/c we were literally displaced by another painter who did not show-up the day we scheduled with him for the job as well as given him a deposit (we got the deposit back thank goodness). We used the webiste Service Magic to hunt for painters with good ratings in our area. Scott was one of them and he called immediately. As luck would have it, he scheduled us in the next day as he rounded up his team. The beauty of this whole deal was he came in less than the original painter we contracted with as well as finished in less than half the time while crown molding an additional room for us too! I hired Scott to remove the "popcorn", texture and paint the ceilings in 2 bedrooms. Scott and his crew of three arrived right on time and completed the work within 5 hours (another contractor said the work would need to be completed in phases which would take 3 days.)
