Still, the staff is friendly and our Sangria glasses (ok, plastic cups) were never empty. It is worth a visit just to check out the funky decor. Murals, woodwork and pottery from local artists are on display and the furniture is very electic. The building was formerly a wine cellar for the adjacent winery but it has now been completely transformed - the original wood and stonework is all still there but now there's tons of color everywhere and not a blank wall in the place. So, if you ever find yourself driving along the highway that runs between Patagonia and Nogales, keep your eyes peeled for a large cement building that has been brightly painted with strands of Christmas lights hanging from the eaves... and in front of that a small sign with an arrow that simply reads "pizza".

Then some more wine tasting, a hand squeezed lemonade for my son and he started up a pinball machine for my 6 year old to play. Tino then said.. you guys like food, I'll bring you some salads and then make the pizza. He brought a plate of russian salads, beets, peas, potatoes and fresh bread with pesto.. double yum! He asked what we liked on our pizza.. now remember.. he wasn't open, he was doing all of this himself! amazing! we asked for cheese and veggies.. Well, the cheese was amazing.. a white pizza with pickled vegetables, best ever! We could hardly fit any in after the first couple of courses! So, we had some leftovers. Tino brought a box and I realized.. we never saw a menu never asked the price, and I had to ask.. so.. "how much?" he said.. "whatever..." so we pulled out what cash we had and gave it to him and he said.. "that's good" We not only had an amazing meal in an amazing place, but a crazy story to tell. I've been going to the Wagon Wheel since I was 16 . It's family friendly and has been a tradition for breakfasts, birthdays for many locals since it opened in 1937. It's also the best place in town for a sitting -at- the- bar drink and conversation. The food has varied over the decades (I'm now in my 70s) but I'm still a fan. The burger and Mexican food has remained primo. The bartenders are locals who most often know their customers and treat pretty much everyone like neighbors. Saturday Karoke nights are my favorite as unexpectedly talented residents take to the mic and change your image of them forever. I think the Wagon Wheel has been written up in the New York Times twice. As one of the last originals it deserves all the attention it gets. To go to Patagonia and not check out the Wagon Wheel Saloon is just a cryin' shame.

Walking in feels like stepping onto a movie set, except the beer is cold and the people are real. The menu is refreshingly short: burgers, a couple sandwiches, green-chile stew, and usually a burrito or enchilada plate. Nothing fancy, but everything is made in-house and tastes like it. We were bummed they were 86'd on the beef burrito the day we went but the cheeseburger more than made up for it. Hand-formed patty, properly griddled with crisp edges, good cheddar, fresh toppings, and a toasted bun that held together. Fries were hot and salty. Service is friendly in that small-town "you're not a stranger for long" way. Prices are fair, the patio dogs are welcome, and there's live music on weekends that somehow never drowns out conversation. Bottom line: if you're anywhere near Patagonia, make the detour. Grab a stool at the ancient bar, order whatever they still have left, and soak in one of the most authentic saloons southern Arizona has left.

On Tuesday, 7 April 2026, this establishment committed a Class 2 Misdemeanor by refusing service to a veteran, his family, and his service animal. The reason, they apparently didn't think the "dog was a registered Service Dog". Folks, there is no "registry" of service animals, nor can an establishment ask this question. Under the ADA and Arizona Statute A.R.S 11-1024, denial of access is a Class 2 misdemeanor. And, this establishment, and another in Patagonia, committed that crime. There are EXACTLY two questions that can be asked of a service animal handler. One, "is this animal required for a disability". The answer in this case was "yes". Two, "what specific task or tasks is the animal trained for". This question was answered. It's not funny, it's discrimination. Against a disabled veteran and his family. And it's illegal. If I were a Patagonian, I'd probably avoid this establishment. I mean, if they can't follow simple ADA and Arizona statutes, what else are they violating? Food safety rules? How would we know? When next in Sonoita I was going to visit Patagonia. Now I have no motivation to. In my personal opinion, protected by the First Amendment, this is not an establishment worth patronizing. Shame on the owner, who claims the dog wasn't "registered". Either you, your staff, or both broke the law. Wonder how that's going to work out?
