We came in with a party of six. The place was not very busy at all yet we were there a solid 15 minutes before the waitress came to get our drink order. Then it took forever for her to deliver the drinks and even longer to come back for our appetizer order. Once ordered, the food came out quick! The deviled eggs were good but the calamari was TOUGH!! Over all were we're here 2 1/2 hours and again, the food came out pretty quick. All the time waiting was for the server who was too busy talking to other staff members instead of tending to her customers. Will not be bring my friend back here again. :( read more

I came here with a large group. The ambiance is definitely fancy, but we were all dressed casually and it was fine. The restaurant was mostly empty (possibly because of the holidays). I decided to treat myself and get a Scratch burger with truffle fries (+$2). The bun was beautifully buttered and crisped. The fries were decadent. Portion size was large and I needed a box to take home the rest. Service was polite and nonintrusive, as the waiter consistently topped off the glass that I had merely sipped. It could be that I'm just not used to this kind of food, but the burger was incredibly greasy (to be fair, what do you expect when there's bacon involved) and I felt pretty bloated a couple hours later. read more

0 stars to the chefs and whoever wrote the menu for not knowing what Vegan means. Their vegetarian menu has a couple items marked as being vegan, but they are not. I had a long discussion about it with the manager, and as can be seen in other reviews here, this is not a new problem. Things like rice are already cooked in butter and cannot be veganized. 5 stars to the manager who took this very seriously, personally made me a vegan salad, and swears that he'll fix this problem on the menu, although I won't be surprised if that proves difficult. I don't have a problem with a restaurant not serving vegan food. But I do have a problem with food being marketed as vegan when it isn't. read more

Came here for Galentines brunch with a couple friends. At 11:30 on Super Bowl Sunday, it wasn't very busy but began to pick up later on. The vegetarian menu was separate so we had to ask for it though the main menu does have a few vegetarian items. Seems a bit odd that you have to request the veggie menu? Though it's not tapas, we ordered a couple things to share between 4 of us. The food was great: lemon ricotta pancakes, French toast, mushroom pizza, and biscuits with whipped butter. Portions are large for brunch items so one item is definitely enough per person. The French toast was our favorite since it had a crunchy but topping. We also ordered basic coffee and the lavender soda (very light, definitely recommend!). My main complaint is that we had to ask for a lot of things at least twice so the service wasn't the best. They didn't bring out the butter with the biscuits, didn't refill our waters until we asked, and brought out a few wrong orders/forgot some orders. I don't mind coming back since the food was good as long as I have the time/patience for the slower service. read more

Ample indoor seating with a nice bar. The location is awesome. The food is ok. Nothing we had would be anything we would go back for. They offer a descent brunch/lunch and kids menu. But food quality is ok. Medium burgers were good, steak and eggs were ok, not a fan of burnt toast. The French toast could use a little more egg. It really needed help from the syrup. Excellent lunch recently. I had the fish of the day (wild halibut) with green beans, tomatoes, potatoes, mushrooms and beurre blanc, while my coworkers each had a seafood risotto dish, the ahi tuna nicoise salad and the Cobb salad. We shared the crabmeat deviled eggs and sweet potato fries as a little starter. Everything was delicious and service was initially great.. the only hiccup was that the entrees came out before we were done with the appetizers resulting in a lot of plate shuffling and such. Nice upscale business casual atmosphere. Would love to go back and try brunch sometime. I'm all about that crab cake brioche they have on the menu. read more

It was date night...you know dressing up, looking cute and dining at an elegant restaurant. When I looked up the menu on their website, I noticed there were no prices. If that's how it is, then I expect the place to be better than just good food. It needs to leave a lasting impression on my taste buds and a feeling of contentment from the overall dining experience. As for the ambiance, the service and the plating, those should be easy stars to earn, right? My Simple Fish entrée, the filet of the day, happened to be one of my favorites, Sea Bass, yeah! Please, look at my photo of it...is the plate too big or are the portions too small? So, this is what Scratch feels is an adequate amount for the price they charge? I know, it's not an uncommon price point for similar establishments. However, I have dined elsewhere and felt it was worth every dollar, but I can't say I felt that way at the end of this meal. Fortunately, the sea bass was grilled nicely. The little sides and I do mean little, were tasty...a crab Louie sauce and a petite frisee salad. I'd give the food, including the bread and our quiet, peaceful corner table, 4 stars. This is when I got hangry! Our server was pleasant enough. While we were ordering, I asked if I could get a small portion of all three sauce options, instead of only choosing one, he said yes. Then, to clarify, I asked if he was going to charge us extra for them, he said yes, he was. The choices were shrimp butter, lobster tarragon or crab Louie. Again, please humor me, take a look at the photo of the rather sparse plate. I nicely requested to have three mini-portions, the total size of the one crab Louie, say equivalent to one tablespoon of each, not more quantity, just the variety, to try them out. So, why the extra charge??? This isn't about money, it's about accommodating a simple customer request. read more

We had our team outing here, and it was quite a nice and upscale place atmosphere-wise. The appetizers were diverse, and we ordered a mix of oysters, fries, hummus pizza. It does seem that this place is very vegetarian-friendly. For the main course, I ordered the sirloin steak, and it was absolutely delicious. The meat is cooked to perfection and very tender. In addition, the dish came with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Overall, I am very satisfied with the dining experience and would recommend this place for a great group outing or get-together. This is not the restaurant's fault, but I do want to warn you regarding parking in the rear. One of my colleagues had his Tesla broken into and lost his work computer/bags. My bf and I had a wonderful dinner here on a Friday evening. Their food overall proved to be well-presented and cooked with good flavor and quality. They have an extensive cocktail menu-- based on the 3 different cocktails that each of us got, each was crafted well. Service was friendly, prompt, and beyond expected. Between the 2 of us, we had the ceviche, mussels and fries, and the short rib. Ceviche: presented in a martini glass and comes with plantain chips. This was pretty good. It wasn't too sour and there was a good amount of salmon in this. (4.5/5) Mussels and fries: delicious, delicious. This was definitely my favorite. I love mussels, and the flavor of this dish was right on point. (5/5) Short rib: Super tender, but it was bit too oversauced for my taste. (4/5) This place is on the pricey side, but with the combination of the inviting and well-constructed atmosphere, attentive and professional service, delicious cocktails, and food quality, I think it's worth it. Went here a couple weeks ago to celebrate my sisters' birthdays. I really wanted to love this place but honestly it was just average. For the price i was expecting exceptional. What our party (5 adults and one kid) had - Flatbread- this was pretty good Side of Biscuits - probably my favorite part of the meal. They were great. Side of cream corn- tasty but the corn could have been a little more done. Short Ribs - Average. The taste of the meat was fine but the portion size for $35 was small. Also not a fan of the mushroom ragu. Potatoes were decent Steak sandwich- underwhelming Fried Chicken- chicken was tasty - comes with a biscuit and cream corn. They put the cream corn on top of the grilled biscuit. Recommendation- ask for the biscuit not grilled and with the corn separate Fresh fish- just ok , but the sauce was an odd accompaniment as it was more of a thicker dip consistency than a sauce. Our oysters were good which was the only good thing there. Beet salad was meh. Lamb meatballs were small and just okay. There were 5 of us and because we made reservations for 6, the bill already came with added tip. The server didn't say anything so I complained to the host and they adjusted it. Here for Mothersday and you cant order sunny side up eggs-- appearntly they pre scrambled all the eggs like a buffet, and when the scrambled egg came seems like it is mixed with powder to save money. Disgusting. The service - absolutely bad! I got diet coke and first one was expired 2 years ago, when manager came, who was unapologetic and blamed on covid, switched me to a new one and promised this one expires in 2022. Oh no, it expires in 2020!! I am in the co packing business I know how to read expiration dates! Plus--i actually tasted both diet cokes and they taste nothing like diet coke. I asked for the manager again, and a different manager came and again, unapologetic and offer me to get a 3rd diet coke. At which point I refused and said I will stick with water. The overall service was slow and took over an hour to get the food. I would not come back again! The worst part was in the end, when they tried to charge me for the diet coke that I obviously just poured into the glass and did not drink. I asked them to take it out which they did. Came here for a weekend brunch as all Californians do. JK. It was nice out so we sat on the patio which was refreshing. There's shade as well so no one burned that day. For brunch, we got the crab cake brioche and the fried chicken sandwich. The crab cake was actually pretty good. The egg was poached well and I liked the flavor of the hollandaise sauce. The brioche toast was just okay. I wish they just gave 2 crab cakes instead. The fried chicken sandwich was a little disappointing. It wasn't as crispy as I feel like fried chicken should be and it could have used more seasoning. It tasted like a healthy fried chicken sandwich as it was made with chicken breast (or so it seemed) instead of a juicier part of the chicken. We had a team lunch at Scratch on Thursday around 12:45 and I have to say the food we tried was quite bland. I've been to scratch throughout the years and can't say it's my favorite restaurant. The food which is high end isn't super flavorful and portion sizes are okay. The ambiance of the restaurant is just mediocre as well. Being a vegetarian, you can ask for the vegetarian menu as the menu they originally give you lacks variety. I ordered a mushroom ravioli dish and for appetizers, we ordered sweet potato fries and Mac n cheese. I love the sweet potato fries, it was super delish and the complimentary bread they give you is really great. The walnuts bread is my favorite! The Mac n cheese was super plain and needed some salt. I think the store brought one has much more flavor than theirs. So we quickly fill up on our appetizers and just chit chat for awhile. The waitress tells us sorry for the wait and the food should be out any moment. I think we waited a good 40 minutes for our food. When it does come out, it's all beautifully plated. My mushroom ravioli was okay but there was hardly any sauce on it so made it super dry. My coworker's salmon dishes was just okay as well from what they told me. Overall, mediocre service, bland food, and high prices , I will avoid this restaurant in the future. read more

While it may seem like I'm on an endless series of first dates, remember that these make for great Yelp reviews. First date spot picked by a very nice and brainy guy. We were initially seated at a booth. They have a separate vegetarian menu which was nice if one doesn't want to pick out things in a large menu. The starters included a lot of seafood, salad, small plate and soup options. We opted for deviled eggs which were portioned in 3 half deviled eggs. That was an odd numbering, but we divided based on weight (my suggestion because if I ate half the food I would eventually weight the same as the dude.) and were good. For mains we had the scallops and the simple fish. I'm assuming it was a fish compared simply. It could also have been a fish that was a simpleton, unable to complete complex mathematics puzzles like the "not so simple fish". Both were well prepared. For dessert we had apple pie and panna cotta. While our panna cotta initially showed up as a creme brûlée this was fixed by our waiter. 5 stars given for service and also for the pleasant, kind, intelligent and chivalrous company. -1 Star for the back door entrance near tables which could result in intermittent bursts of cold air. +1 Star gained back for switching our table to a location away from the said door. The restaurant might consider closing off the back door to limit drafts, particularly on winter evenings when the temperature can be in the 40s. read more

(post-pandemic update) Very nice business-like décor, with a circular bar layout . Booths are built with high solid wood walls like mini-castles. Level of noise is also average, with good booth isolation this place is good for a long get-to-know-each-other business lunch or dinner, I use it for catching up with colleagues when there is a lot of topics to discuss. The place is not crowded on weekday evenings, reservations were not needed on the day I visited. Service was very good, our server's recommendations were spot-on. Food is not bad, above average for the Castro Street (I actually like it more post-pandemic). There is a pretty good variety of wines (American only) . Expect to pay $80-100 per person for the dinner before tips. read more

I have no idea how this place stays in business. Decided to try it again after not going for a few months, and had a terrible experience. The food is ridiculously overpriced and over seasoned. If you're looking to feel special out even respected as a customer, this is not the place. The bar staff try hard, but seem so overworked that just getting their attention can take over 20 minutes. The bar manager was extraordinarily rude, and refused to give us any information about drinks, or tastes of what they had on tap or in bottles. Visited Scratch for lunch on a weekday with a group from work. I was surprised that the restaurant had such few patrons during the busy lunch hour. Maybe that was a sign? I like that they had a variety of options on their vegetarian menu, however the food itself was not impressive. The table bread was cold and the butter hard. I ordered the portobello ravioli and it came with a side of greens. The ravioli was bland and covered in a mild sauce. I have no idea why the sauce had corn, it added nothing. Beans, beans the magical...well, you get it. My Scratch Fried Chicken plate came with some tasty beans which included some sort of beef and fried onions on top. Cornbread came out with corn on top of it (wha?!?!?) and the fried chicken was done extremely well. Deliciously breaded yet moist on the inside, three pieces of chicken came on my plate and they were all cooked to darn-near-perfection. Looks like prices have gone up a bit- the fried chicken plate has risen from $19 to $25. There are a number of great restaurants on Castro Street and this is definitely one of them. read more

We had reservations but still had to wait 15-20 minutes to be seated, ok fine. They can't control how long people take to eat their meals. I wasn't too upset since it wasn't too cold out that night. Should've taken it as a sign though because everything went downhill from there. My boyfriend and I ordered two appetizers, hot fried chicken strips and pork belly. Both of these were really good and came out promptly. Our first round of cocktails also arrived quickly. Don't remember what he had but I had a lemongrass martini and it was super refreshing. That's where the good portion of the night ended. The server disappeared for probably an hour ... no one came by to took our drink orders for a second round, my boyfriend's glass of water sat empty the entire time. Our entrees were the burger and the ceviche. Please explain to me how either of those took over an hour to prepare. No wonder our table wasn't ready when we arrived. The kitchen was beyond slow, and so was the service. We finally received our food and I was too annoyed and cold to enjoy it. Considering there were maybe about a dozen tables and at least as many staff working ... no excuses. Would not recommend nor return. read more

Random family dinner we made reservations for this place at 830 on a Sunday night. They closed at 9 and we were the only ones dining. I raise one eyebrow due to lack of occupants but kept an open mind to the quality and service they had to offer. I ordered the fish of the day which was halibut with a side of lobster salad. We also ordered the silk mashed potatoes and cheddar biscuits. The fish plate was very well prepared, the mashed potatoes were nothing to write home about but they didn't take away from the experience. The cheddar biscuits lack cheddar flavor but they come with tiny caramelized onions that are exquisite. Not to mention the complimentary bread being above average. The waiter was attentive and our food came out in a timely fashion. All in all id suggest giving this place a whirl. There were a few dishes worth checking out on the menu. We came here for our anniversary dinner last night. The ambience of this place is so warm, welcoming and classy all at the same time. The place opens right onto the bar which was flooded with people on a wednesday evening. We had a reservation so we got seated instantly. The servers were pleasant and cordial. We ordered pretty fast as there was a decent vegetarian menu. We ordered cocktails, one of them was spicy and good. From the starters we ordered Grilled Artichoke and Mushroom Flatbread. The Artichokes were disappointing. I will not recommend them. The flatbread was not bad but not very great too. For the main course we ordered Mushroom Ravioli and Crispy Tofu. The Tofu was fried and cut into big pieces which I didnt like but other than that the overall dish was impressive. It came with couscous, salad and roasted red pepper hummus which was delicious. The Ravioli was disappointing again, undercooked with very less stuffing. The quantity of the dishes was good but they were extremely overpriced. This place seems a bit pricey for what you get in terms of quantity and quality of food. The ambiance is swanky and it seems like a good place to take coworkers out for drinks too. I got the local greens salad and for $11.50 I thought the portion size was quite small. It felt like 1.5 of a side salad. I did like the dressing that they had, some sort of buttermilk and red wine vinaigrette. The goat cheese was a good touch. There is no protein in this (as is) though. The meatloaf my fiance got was so salty. I was really surprised as how unpleasant it was. It was also $20 so it wasn't super cheap either. The calamari was decent. HOWEVER they added in a fried slice of lemon (what) and I had the unfortunate luck of eating it. It left a horrid taste in my mouth.
