Shame on me for 3 reasons: 1) This spot is a wine bar. How could I possibly give only 3 stars? 2) I should have never doubted that DC has good mexican food 3) I keep trying to find something wrong with this place Why?! Well, there is something off about screwtop and I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm wracking my brain because the food was good, service was good, and all very prompt and quick. I think it's the ambiance. I'm frustrated with the layout in here. It's got great natural lighting but the long bar is basically a looooong passageway that locks you in. The opposite end is for larger groups and is situated right near the bathrooms so peeps will come through continuously. I just don't feel a real social vibe in here and it feels too cramped. Solution: sit outside and people watch with your pinot. We came for brunch. Service was very helpful and attentive. As for the food...Verdict? Absolutely delicious. The french toast and bacon were outstanding and the enchiladas were out of this world amazing! They weren't too spicy but you bet they still had some kick. I was blown away with how good it is! Solid choice for a quiet brunch if you're in the area. Good sized menu for such a small place. I had the smokey BLAT with their tomato bisque. Lovely little spot in Clarendon for date night or drinks with friends. The inside is pretty small but I believe they do have a bit of outdoor seating for when the weather permits. My boyfriend and I stopped by for drinks on a weekday evening and sat at the bar. We each got a custom flight of 3 wines to try (he wanted to get a beer but I wouldn't let him since it's a WINE bar after all lol). Most of the wines on the menu have 3 different sizes-- sip, glass, or bottle; the custom flight is a "sip" size of whatever wines you pick, though it was a pretty gen-po (generous pour) for a sip. I got three whites and he got three reds. Of the white wines we really enjoyed the Y3 by Jax Sauvignon Blanc. The Love, Oregon was our favorite red and favorite overall (crazy since we both normally prefer white wines)! Very smooth. We also got the brie for a snack to go with the wine which came with a few crackers and a bit of bread. We had a very nice time overall. A tad pricey but expected from a wine bar I suppose. Very accommodating. I ended up really liking the wines here. There are tons of options. It gets crowded here but it's still easy to sit and chat here without having to raise your voice. We tried the empanadas and the jalapeño poppers. The empanadas were pretty good and the jalapeño poppers were okay but they had little mini hot dogs just FYI. Next time I think I would try a cheese board or a sandwich with my wine. The food was good, the ambiance was chic casual if that's a thing and our service was alright. If you're looking for a cute place to wine down, come to Screwtop. This was my first wine bar experience so I wasn't sure what to expect. This is definitely a smaller spot with limited seating inside and a few tables outside, but I enjoyed the cozy + intimate vibe. LOVED their menu and the catchy titles they had for each varietal (I live for a good pun); some stand-out favorites were Friends with Blendifits and Everything Happen For a Riesling. I ordered one of their featured flights which came with samplings of the Sophora Brut (Chardonnay/Pinot Noir), Satellite Sauvignon Blanc, and the O-Tu Rose. My boyfriend customized his own flight, which I'd like to do next time. The pours were generous, so I highly recommend getting a flight if you want to get a taste of a few different varietals! To go with our wines, we ordered the grilled cheese sliders. In all honesty, they were nothing special and it didn't taste like there was a unique blend of cheeses in there or anything. I felt like they were just a bunch of cut-up grilled cheese sandwiches (plus, can you really go wrong with grilled cheese?). I write this review only to warn others about an unfortunate experience I've had that in no way reflects the quality of the service or food (both of which I have enjoyed numerous times before, and the reason for more than 1 or 0 stars). I made a reservation for a party of 6 over the phone 5 days prior to guests coming into town. I had noticed their online reservation max was 4, and wanted to ensure nothing got garbled or missed through an online form submission. I quite like the spot, and was excited to introduce others to it! 3 hours prior to my reservation, I received a phone call that the table I had reserved was only for 4 people and would not accommodate 6. The scolding and admonishment from the closing manager (as he introduced himself), as if the mistake were somehow my fault and not his staff's, in addition to his apathy / disinterest in finding a creative solution to accommodate a reservation made nearly a week in advance is enough to make me never want to return. Very cute place for a girls night or date. I went here last night with two of my girlfriends. We got there at 6:30 on a Friday night and luckily were seated right away. FYI happy hour ends at 6 so we missed the happy hour deals. Our waiter was really rude and not helpful which should be a requirement when working at a wine bar bc not everyone are wine specialist and do need some recommendations on the menu. The service was very mediocre. I had about two sips left in one of my glasses and the buser took it. When you are paying $15 for a glass of wine, I want to enjoy every last drop. We ordered the nachos with pulled pork. They were very good and had cheese throughout the nachos and not just on the top which I liked. The pork was delicious and very tender. I would definitely order the nachos again. The cheese boards also looked good and I would likely order one next time We ordered the white wine flights and were not blown away. I then switched to the flying cloud which I really enjoyed. The wine prices are a little steep. Well, when we arrived, we were not greeted for several minutes, nor were we able to sit down at our reserved time because they "weren't done." We were not seated for 15 solid minutes, which only gave us about 1 hour to enjoy wine and food. This is unacceptable for any business. What is the purpose behind having reservations if you are unable to be seated at the time you've reserved? A wine bar should have waitresses who are knowledgeable of the wines that are on the menu. Our waitress did not know, and did not seem to care to know. The food was just ok, nothing to brag about; I just was not impressed. I come here quite frequently - while this wine isn't sourced from a winery owned by the shop the sommelier here must be quite good because the wines that are sold (whole bottles and by the glass) are affordable and tasty. (You know a place knows what it's doing when the house rosé is good). I love the frosé here too - actually it's probably my favorite of all time. huge wine selection and amazing cheese-centric menu in the heart of Clarendon. the place is intimate and refined, with a full bar and entire wall of bottles of wine. It was crowded for a Saturday evening, but our table of 3 was sat right away and received our food quickly. I can't say good enough things about the baked goat cheese appetizer; it's an entire log of goat cheese baked with herbs and served hot with toasted baguette and fig spread. Absolutely incredible. For my entree I ordered the truffle mac and cheese with a side salad; the mac and cheese itself was smaller than the side salad, but since we'd gotten the goat cheese appetizer, I didn't go hungry. Screwtop is one of our go-to restaurants for a weekend brunch or lunch. Interesting wine selection (flights, by the glass) and the food is fresh and delicious. We've never had a bad meal. Some of our favorites are Huevos Rancheros with pork, enchiladas, smokey BLAT, and tailgate turkey. Tomato bisque is creamy with a slight kick, and they always have an interesting soup of the day. We also love that the side salads are not some boring combo of limp lettuce with a few random veggies. Fresh greens, onion, tomatoes, pine nuts, cheese and a great selection of dressings. My personal favorite is pepper jelly vinaigrette. This is a small place and sometimes the food takes a while so come when you have time to sit and relax. We also highly recommend their wine and cheese of the month club. The cheeses are always delicious and wines interesting - and often something we wouldn't have found on our own. read more

North Fillmore is FAAAAST becoming my favorite street in all the land. Seriously, my beloved Bakeshop, Green Pig Bistro, Artisan Confections, and now Screwtop all in a row? It's like being shot -- BANG BANG BANG BANG -- straight in the stomach with sheer awesomeness. I've had my eye on Screwtop for a while, but never had the opportunity to check it out until the fabulous Jackie N suggested we meet up there. And thank goodness she did! This place is utterly fantastic. From the impressive wine selection (separated by type into hilarious lists like "Every rosé has its thorn") to the outraaageously delicious eats, I was in love from the minute I sat down. First up, I love how you can see them preparing things right in front of you -- there's a glass partition but they assemble the cheese plates and charcuterie and whatnot right then and there. Secondly, their wine happy hour makes it nice and easy even for a semi-neophite like myself to select something delicious ($6 a glass during HH -- I went with the pinot grigio). Thirdly, well, duh, the FOOD. We split a handful of their small plates, all of which were stellar (and, again, adorably and hilarious titled!) and I would definitely order them again. I foresee many mental battles ahead wherein I return to Screwtop and fight internally over whether to re-order the things I've already gotten, or to force myself to continue trying other items from the menu. Allow me to explain: I HEART GRILLED CHEESE SLIDERS: Out came with a hefty amount of ooey, gooey melty cheese oozing out from between grilled, buttery bread (it was like two full sandwiches' worth) and with an accompanying tomato soup sauce for dipping. Delicious -- just slightly more upscale than what mom used to make, haha. A PERFECT DATE NIGHT: Bacon-wrapped, blue cheese-stuffed dates which were drizzled with a thick balsamic reduction... uh, yeah. Do I even need to say it? I seriously could have shoved all 7 into my mouth at once and died happy right then and there, were it not for the basic common decency that stayed my hand. #regrets GETTING FIGGY WITH IT: Ordered almost just because of the name alone, these were thick slices of crusty bread, covered with fig preserves, a gorgonzola cream (very light!), and nice long slices of prosciutto. Absolutely yummy, though I guess if I had to rank all of the dishes we got, I'd probably put this one at the bottom just due to how awesome the other ones were. Came here tonight for a girl's night after happy hour to get dinner and drinks. Believe me when I say this is 150% a girl's place. There were maybe 3 men patrons in the whole joint. I liked that quality since I haven't stumbled upon many establishments like this where it is a place women can come and enjoy a glass of wine and take it easy. This isn't a bro place even if the hockey game was on. What I liked was the wine selection. What I didn't like is that the food was about the same price as the wine. I will not fault the place for me being a cheap ass, and also I am no wine expert. Moving on.... I liked the food I had. The tomato bisque didn't seem to be cream based how I usually like it. It was a bit runny for bisque, and had more of the consistency of well...soup. There is a good difference between tomato soup and tomato bisque. It worked out either way, but don't be misled to think you're getting bisque. The sandwich I got was the Maple-Bacon Bourbon Chicken $13.50 - Roasted chicken, bacon jam, and melted Fontina cheese pressed on tomato focaccia bread. The sandwich was good. I didn't taste the bacon jam which is what sold me on the idea of getting this sandwich in the first place, unfortunately. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it and it is a filling sandwich. All sandwiches comes with soup, salad, or chips. They have a pretty wide variety of food for being a wine bar. It goes beyond the wine, fine cheese, and meats. That was one thing that drew me here. Most wine bars I come across serve tapas style plates or primarily meat and cheese. They get a plus for the diverse menu. Service was spotty. Our server was nice, but was a little misleading when it came to getting one of my wines. I had tried a few samples to see which glass I wanted next. She brought out prosecco when I had asked for one of the reisling sips. I drank a few sips before making the comment it wasn't the right drink and my friend tried it and agreed since she did order a glass of prosecco. When we tracked down our server, I asked if I could just go ahead and keep it since I had drank some of it. She said sure, apologized for it being the wrong drink, admitting it was wrong, and said she would replace. Great! No problems. I will get my drink, and keep what I have here since I have already started it and no point in wasting good alcohol. Time for the check... they don't split checks, so we had to divy it up before giving her back our cards and determining who had what. The prosecco sip was on the bill. It is only $5, but when you tell me I am not going to be charged and you acknowledge your mistake, then that should be that. When she came over to take the bill away and our credit cards, her attitude towards removing it changed. It was the way she said it and she backtracked a bit on what she said previously. She said, 'Well, you did drink it, and I can't remove it from the bill, so I will have to get my manager to do it.' OK, what? You said it was fine 45 minutes ago, but now you're saying you're not sure if it can be removed? This annoyed me. The manager did remove it and she brought out the bills as they were supposed to be charged and we had no further issues. I just feel that if you're going to tell the patron one thing, then you should stick with that. Don't try to change it all of a sudden or be misleading. If you're not sure in the first place about me keeping a drink and not being charged for it -- just ask! If I had to be charged because of her mistake, then take the drink back and get me what I ordered. Pure and simple. I am stepping off my soap box... 3 stars. read more

I'm thankful that fellow NOVA Elite Yelpers Mary Kate M. and Phoenix Simone W. invited me to partake in a little girl's night out for dinner and drinks and Screwtop, as I had no idea this cute spot existed. It's definitely perfect for hanging out with your gal pals to do whatever it is we girls do when we get together, sip wine, and talk about life. There definitely weren't more than a few men in the otherwise-packed space when we were there. Tucked away next to the bar, the ladies and I pored over the menu, which had a surprising amount of variety of dishes for what might otherwise be dismissed as simply a "wine bar with light bites." You can definitely have your cake and eat it, too, all while enjoying a nice variety of wines. Now, what's cool about Screwtop is that you can more or less choose your own adventure in terms of having the typical "girl's night" with wine and cheese, or you can have a full meal, accompanied by a glass or few of wine. Even better is that Screwtop offers complimentary samples, 2 oz sips, 5 oz pours, or full bottles. Their wine menu is very easy to navigate, complete with cute and witty titles, such as "Call A Cab" for their list of Cabernet Sauvignon selections. The menu also indicates which wines are organic, sustainably-produced, or biodynamic, for those who are concerned with the origin of their wine. Sangrias, wine flights, and craft beers round out the extensive list. Food-wise, there's a comprehensive selection of cheeses, naturally, to pair with various wines, which are accompanied by various charcuterie options, and bread or gluten-free crackers. You can also add on tapenades, chutneys, olives, almonds, and popcorn for your snacky needs. Alternately, for meals, they have several "plates for sharing," but we found them to be quite adequate for individual servings. I chose the soup of the day, which was a smooth and delicious carrot coconut, in a cute little cup, for only $4. Delicious! My "main" was their amply-sized Pot Belly Big Lettuce Wraps, for $9.50. There was plenty of meat and the peanut sauce was very good! I paired my pig with the suggested Malbec and it was a delightful combo. My dining mates thoroughly enjoyed their food as well; the Truffle Mac and Cheese, the Buffalo Sliders, and the Maple-Bacon Bourbon Chicken Sandwich. Everything seems great up to now, but we ran into some non-kosher service snafus (read more about it in Mary Kate M.'s review from 4/23/15), but I will add that it seemed quite odd that our server appeared to know very little about wines, and had a difficult time discerning between various kinds of whites when pressed for assistance, and wasn't sure what was in stock or not. I feel as though I would return here, because the food, ambiance, atmosphere, etc. are all spot-on, plus parking is easy and free in the garage below. I definitely love Screwtop. Besides being a great place to eat, it's a great place to buy wine, with a friendly, knowledgeable staff. They'll even chill the wine for you, if you need (I bought wine, went to spin class, then went back to pick it up)--that's pretty fabulous. Service during dinner has been great, as well. I've had the maple-bacon bourbon chicken sandwich, baked goat (cheese), and pot belly pig lettuce wraps. Everything has been great, but do not missed the baked goat, which is warm chèvre with herbs and crostini. Definitely my favorite menu item, after the wine of course. I love this place. Walk in and you get stinky cheese smell. While it's a little off-putting at first, how can you hate a place that carries stinky cheese: One of the best things to eat in the whole world? If you want to drink, they have some benches set up European style (i.e., be prepared to sit w/ some other people unless you're hanging w/ 8 people so you can fill the whole table). Love sitting European style - great way to meet new people that also like to drink wine. Most people that like to drink wine are awesome, of course. The dining area has a bunch of 4-tops, and the staff was really nice. The wine list is definitely solid (okay, I know, it's a wine shop so it should be - but I'm telling you sometimes wine shops have a crappy selection). I recently discovered this place and hope to come back many more times! It was a random Yelp find one day when I was in the area. As soon as I walked in, I loved the charm of the place - it felt like I was in Europe for the afternoon. They're a restaurant and wine bar, and also a shop that sells wine bottles and various jams/accompaniments. The whole feel was so relaxed and comfortable. We were seated quickly and our server was super sweet! The wine was fantastic and so was the food. Some of the items they sell on the shop side are ingredients for their dishes. Where ScrewTop really shines is the cheese pairing. For $17 you can choose 3 of their cheeses to go with your wine. We really enjoyed the Jalapeno, the Manchengo and the Irish Whiskey Cheddar. Wine and cheese is never that cheap, so come here expecting shell out a bit more than your usual fast casual spot. It's a small location, so it can get crowded. New low-key wine bar in clarendon. This place was relaxing and not pretentious at all. Even if you don't know wine, cheese or even meat, just sit down and ask any staff for their suggestion. The chef loves pork. Pork was everywhere..., bowl, statue, toy, plate and of course on the menu. My friend had 'We dig the pork' sandwich and said the pork-meat was great. My french toast was good but very small portion... Pudding-like texture inside and crunch-panini texture outside=Good!! but I would just get bread-pudding instead. After eating two thin slices of french toast, I needed to get something additional at other place. Screwtop is one of my favorite places in the Clarendon area. My wife and I often go for brunch on the weekend and order the quiche and soup of the day. It's different every time, and I can trust it to be pretty much awesome every time. Then we'll get a carafe of sangria or a bottle of wine and just enjoy a couple of peaceful hours. The staff are all very friendly, helpful, and provide excellent service. The truffle popcorn they put out is also pretty addicting. The atmosphere is very inviting and there's no rush - just relax, eat, and drink. read more

I've had 2 very different experiences here, hence the 3-star rating. A few weeks ago, I came in with my friend and we had lovely service, wine, and food. I would give that experience 5 stars. I went in yesterday around 5:30pm when it was fairly empty, save for 4-5 patrons at the bar. I sat myself at the bar and received TERRIBLE service from BETH (shoulder length brown hair). She was cold and made me feel unwelcome. This was particularly evident because she was giving warm, friendly service to the patron seated next to me. She repeatedly asked him how he was enjoying his food, how his wine was, etc., whereas she basically ignored me the entire time and treated me with disdain. I am very displeased with my experience with Beth. I would highly reconsider returning because of her. read more

Love this place. Every time. Tonight I tried the rosé and white wine sampler. I thought for sure the sparking rosé would be my favorite so I was floored by how much I loved the fruit-forward white wine they served on the sampler tonight (the Quinta da Raza, from Portugal). I actually ended up buying a bottle to take home. I was here for just a bit tonight, tried the sampler and an order of fish tacos. I can honestly say the tacos were better than the ones I got at a Mexican restaurant the day before (the sauces they had on the side were to die for). I love this place. It's small and intimate, the wine is great, the food is great.. can't go wrong! Great for: girls night out, first dates, cheese cravings, picnic pickup! read more

I made a reservation for my birthday about a month in advance. Thinking that it would be nice on a Friday. I booked the patio only for it to rain. Usually when that happens a restaurant will either contact you or simply move you inside but not these guys they don't give a care even if it's for your birthday and even if you've been a regular customer (was a wine Club member all through the pandemic, when many businesses were struggling including this one) for multiple years. I was sent a confirmation of my reservation at 12 noon. It was already raining and it made no reference to being on the patio so I assumed they had done the normal thing and accommodate us inside. When my friends arrived they refused to seat us and lied saying they've been trying to get in touch with us all day (despite no voicemail or texts or emails and a confirmation from their system that day so certainly not even a true attempt). This was despite having plenty of open tables inside and with my friends, reminding them that it was a birthday reservation. Needless to say I won't be back either for food or to purchase wine after this experience and I'm glad that there are other one bars and restaurants that were more than happy to take our business. Definitely don't trust a reservation here unless you personally call and confirm it and even then proceed with caution and have a back up plan. read more

Hi! Totally unsolicited review of an amazing experience we had tonight. I was looking for a way to say thank you to my amazing team at work and include their significant others. I looked into wine and cheese tasting options and found that Clarendon's Screwtop (where I love to go for their amazing food and staff anyway) has virtual wine tastings they can host. The owner, Wendy, was amazing at finding the right setup based on my needs and budget. She connected me with the Rebecca to discuss the evening. She setup the cheese & wine tastings for each of my staff and their +1 and even sent wine to one of my team members in Florida! Each person's tasting included a heavy 2 ounce pour of 6 wines based on our interests, plus delicious cheese, fried fruit, salami and nut pairing. Rebecca had researched the regions and wines and did an incredible job engaging my team and making it super fun. Awesome local business we can support and they will pay you back in spades with and incredible service, knowledge and experience. My only regret is I couldn't also get their butternut squash tacos on my tasting plate because they don't travel as well :) For their regular menu, I LOVE this place. Outdoor seating with heat lamps, amazing staff, super knowledgable and delicious food. Great COVID protocols. Such a great local place that should draw a crowd from all over! read more

The waiter was very helpful in picking a dry red wine and he let me try a couple! Grilled cheese sliders were pretty delicious with a small tomato soup as a dip on the side Got the acorn squash with turkey and it was pretty bland though well made. However the ambience was really nice and we stayed and talked for a couple of hours - very cute for a date or a friends date :) read more
