I took the Open Water diving course in June and had an amazing time. I was terrified to do the class at the beginning, but Jez did an amazing job of making me feel comfortable diving. All of the skills build on each other, so you don't jump right into it and you get comfortable as you go along and learn more skills. Jez was encouraging and went the extra mile to help those of us who felt nervous about doing certain skills. He is also really funny, which helps time go by really fast! I am considering signing up for an Advanced class with Jez, since I liked the Open Water course so much. I highly recommend Scubaland as well. They are really helpful and the course itself teaches you skills ranging from how to put your gear together to learning about what to do if your air runs out underwater. read more

I was explicitly told the service for my regulator would cost no more than $200. When the work was completed, I was charged approximately $410 which is more than double the maximum amount I had been quoted. I was not contacted beforehand to approve a $400 charge or given the opportunity to decline the additional cost. They "Fixed" things like a battery change that didn't even need to be changed out or replaced. No communication at all about anything. If I Would have known I would have never went here. The worst part is I've been a repeat customer who even got a certification here. Owners should be ashamed. read more

Its been quite a journey getting certified in open water diving. My instructor (Robie Louis, https://www.scubaland.com/robie-lewis) is definitely one of the best instructors anyone can have. The course is planned out just right and in sequence that it all pans out when you are out in a lake or river or beach. The crucial take away is scuba diving could come easily for some while takes a bit longer for others (I am in the latter category). Robie is intuitive about the students' comfort level and tailors instructions accordingly (which is amazing by the way). read more

This place is an awesome facility to do your Open Water Certification or a refresher course! The facility has a deep pool to do all your exercises and checkout skills with full equipment rental. I did my scuba refresher course here with a Groupon for $35 (I believe the reg price is $70) and it was fantastic! The facility is clean and our instructor was very patient and knowledgeable. You get your money's worth in the 4-hr refresher course as well as full on workout! They also have a scuba club where you can go on different dive trips with your fellow Austin divers. TLDR: USE THIS SHOP. Excellent customer service and they genuinely care about people having a good time on the water. Today a group of friends and I came into town to dive Lake Travis as a refresher before an upcoming Flower Gardens trip. We had originally planned to get our gear from Austin Dive World, and despite calling ahead multiple times and being told we would not need a reservation for gear, we showed up and they were out. We frantically looked for another shop and found Scubaland. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly, giving us tons of insight into the Flower Gardens and helpful tips about the charter. While checking out we realized they closed at 5pm that day and we wouldn't be able to return our gear after the dive before driving back to San Antonio. The owner of the shop, Rob, gave us his personal cell, home address, and even drew us a map and said there would be no problem if we dropped it off at his house after our dive. The day got cut short due to weather so we were able to make it back before they closed BUT after returning to San Antonio we realized we accidentally kept a wetsuit. We texted Rob and he said he'd be at his house all day, to bring it by at any time, and even offered to let us do a shore dive with them free of cost since we lost a half day of diving due to weather. Keep in mind that we didn't even book our dives through them, only rented our gear!!! Our entire group was thoroughly impressed and will not be using any other shop for future dives in or around this area. Thanks for a great experience! read more

I completed the open water course on 10/8/17 and I can't imagine having gone anywhere else. Michael Lutz was my instructor. Not only was he very experienced and knowledgeable (18 years diving in multiple underwater landscapes), but he was also patient and happy to provide further clarification. After the course was over he sought to help me find the best gear that works for me and has continued to provide support in ensuring I am comfortable with my diving abilities. His expertise and teaching style made the course enjoyable, friendly, and efficient. Likely due to the fact that it was a fall course, I was one of only two students. This allowed for more one-on-one training and greater oversight for needed correction. While Scubaland can be over-priced on some gear, their prices are matched to online options for most brand BCDs, wetsuits, etc. Furthermore, they do provide financing options. The guys are pleasant to chat with and they are also easy-going. It generally took me a few trips to the store before I was able to determine what gear I wanted to purchase, and they were always patient and understanding. They have a travel office where you can seek advice and book diving excursions, as well as inquire about group dives (both local and vacation). If you are looking to take the open water course, I highly suggest Scubaland. Ask for Michael Lutz for any course you wish to take, as he offers the open water course and several advanced and specialty courses. read more

My 11 year old son and I decided to get our open water certifications before a trip to Florida. It was such a great experience for us! The course will teach you everything you need to know to feel completely confident and comfortable in the water, beginning with simply putting your face into the water and breathing from the regulator. I needed a few different skills explained to me more than once, including how to assemble the scuba gear, and everybody was patient and willing to help. The entire staff was amazing. Eric, who led our nightly classes and weekend dives, was incredibly knowledgeable. He explains things clearly and in bits that students can understand. I am a teacher, and I can recognize great teaching :) He has several people assisting at the lake, who took SUCH great care of my son and I. Diving can be a little intimidating at first, but all of the staff knew how to handle the situations (such as me not understanding a hand gesture underwater) calmly and effectively. Robbie and Mark were our primary helpers, and I could not imagine anybody doing a better job teaching us and making us feel safe and taken care of. I had no problem letting either of them take my son down under 40 feet of water without me, which means they are stellar :) Highly recommend Scubaland, and my son and I will both be returning for the Advanced Open Water Course. read more

This review is for the Discover Scuba Diving course offered at Scubaland. Kelly taught our lesson and she was FANTASTIC. She truly helped to put my mind at ease - I was a smidge nervous due to a bad experience with snorkeling in Maui. Diving is way easier than snorkeling. Let me tell ya, having a steady flow of oxygen really makes a difference. By the time our lesson was through, we were ready to sign up for the Open Water Course to get our certifications and plan on doing so very soon. Have to note that we had a couple of LivingSocial deals. I reserved our class before the coupon expired, but then actually had to reschedule a few times. By the time we made it in our deal had expired. Not only did Roy work with our rescheduling requests, but he also honored our LivingSocial deal. We didn't even ask him if he would, he just did! Class act and we had beyond a great customer experience. Can't wait to get certified and will be sure to schedule during wrestling off-season and non-crunch time. I have been associated with Scubaland for about 20+ years now, and consider the owners, Rob and Jennifer to be my friends. It is the only LDS I frequent in Austin. Always professional, knowledgable, and courteous, manager and assistant manager Alex and Roy, along with Mark, their superb equipment technician, have always been my go-to folks in the store. They taught me how to scuba dive, so there's very little I can hate on! Our instructor for the Open Water course, Jack Ryan, was fantastic, and we lucked out and got a class almost to ourselves (one other person). If you want to go get certified, go in WINTER. I know it sounds really really horrid, but you get a super small class and lots of personal attention, and those thick wetsuits keep you warm in the 50-60 degree water, pinky swear. This is from someone who will get in the heated pool at the gym and complain it's cold, so you know it's legit! We went back for the advanced class right away, and Richard Weiss created a class just for us, and we got to spend a weekend out on his boat doing that, which was what every class should be - taught on a boat. Cause.... boat! The only thing I have to pick on is that a) the store is just PRICEY. I know scuba gear is expensive, and I'd love to support the local shop, but there's a lot of stuff that is just marked WAY up from online purchasing. It's all great quality stuff, and I've purchased a few things there out of convenience (boots, fins, etc), but I'm having trouble justifying spending a lot of money on gear after the certification. I need to let the wallet recover. However, they are super knowledgeable and organized and I just get a little happy going in there because I know it probably means I'm going to get to go under the water in a bit. After way too many years, I decided to get my scuba recertification. The Scubaland team were incredible and professional in helping me select the best mask, snorkel and fins for my needs. I enrolled in and completed their PADI Open Water, Enhanced Air, and Advanced Open Water courses over the past six months. Their instructors provided a highly-interesting, well-paced program to satisfy the requirements of these courses. Both the classroom and water sessions provided me the training necessary to get back up to speed to safely participate in this activity. While I researched equipment on-line, these folks helped me select the best equipment for my skill level and needs. Four stars because I've only rented gear here, and I like NAUI certification. The gear I rented here was great. That includes reg set, wetsuit, weights, bcd, and air. Whoever helped me out was great, and the pricing was reasonable. I really like that they have small Ladyhawk BCDs, because I'm petite and these are some of the best fitting BCDs for the petite athletic but scrawny-ish (my) build. I think they fit better than the Pearl BC that I own, but I like the hybrid style better. read more

I took my scuba certification classes at Scubaland last weekend and it was such a great experience. My dive instructor (Bill Kelley) was hands down one of the coolest guys around. He was passionate about making sure we had the skills to have safe/fun dives. He was patient with the skills we needed a little help with and made sure we were prepared for the open water. We've recently moved to Austin and while my husband and I elect to get our ongoing certifications on site when we travel, we've had our kids take their open water classes from Scubaland. Their teachers are great and have really done a great job at making our kids feel comfortable and confident in the water. In terms of the shop, we bought our dive computers there and while we were able to get an exception deal on an end-of-the-year sale, I was under the impression I was getting top-of-the line equipment. When I showed up in Cozumel a couple months later, another diver had a way better dive computer than mine that I didn't even know was on the market! To top it off, she was FOURTEEN. Arg. But, I still enjoy my computer and it was a good value for the money. read more

I haven't been much impressed with this store and had heard that the South store is actually much better in terms of customer service and efficiency. Went to the South store this past weekend and it's all true. Jennifer is a great manager and their customer service is just brilliant. Did an advanced class with Tim S. and he is a great teacher. Learned a lot from him. I will drive an extra 30 minutes just so I can go to the south store. read more

Summary: Exorbitant service and parts pricing; shop owner's greed is his primary concern, customer satisfaction and other factors are secondary only to dollars. Details: I dropped off my Scuba Pro regulator and BCD for its annual servicing. Last year, at a shop near Chicago, I paid $97 for the service; Scubaland Adventures charged me $264. The Chicago shop charged $97 in labor (parts were free) and Scubaland charged $150 labor, a 1.5X difference. The issue with parts is where the story gets interesting. When I bought the Scuba Pro gear in Chicago, I was told I had a lifetime warranty for parts, so I was not charged for parts when I had the gear tuned up. The Chicago shop owner put my serial numbers in Scuba Pro's warranty database, but for some reason Scubaland claims that they couldn't find them. The Chicago shop owner offered to provide the parts to Scubaland (after Scubaland had done the maintenance), but the Scubaland owner refused that arrangement. The Chicago shop owner then offered to pay Scubaland for the parts (at dealer cost) if he agreed to not charge me for the parts, and the Scubaland owner refused that offer as well. Obviously, collecting his mark-up on parts, which I understand is considerable (I'm guessing a 2X mark-up?), is more important to the owner than keeping his customers happy. I'd rather drive 100 miles and go to a different shop than go back to Scubaland. read more

Wow! This is like the Runtex for scuba in Austin. Locally owned and enthusiastically run! Hubby and I are taking scuba lessons at, ahem, a competing shop but had heard thru friends that this Scubaland has a large sales rack (they do!) to hopefully save money on fin and mask purchases. We originally started at their location on 620 and were expertly helped by Emma on how to find the perfect mask fit which is crucial for scuba. She spent a long time with us and hubby actually bought his $75 mask from her (they don't have a lot of sale items here). I opted to run down to this location as it has the big sale rack. Yes, when it comes to survival in the water, I am a bargain hunter :) Upon entering, a very nice gentleman, Mike, asked if I needed help. "I need lots of help, I'm afraid," I said, and he responded with an enthusiastic "Great!". First off, he found me the perfect mask off the sale rack for half off at $40. Then on to the fins. He produced for me some sweet flippers that were on sale for $70. He also had me try on some sturdy soled booties. I liked it all and when he asked what color I wanted my fins in, I randomly picked yellow thinking I could find them easier if I dropped em while swimming. He returned from the back with a different set of fins saying they were out of the yellow sale fins but I could have this better, $100 set for the same $70 since they were in yellow! AND, he gave me the student discount of 10% even tho I'm not taking lessons with them. What a great guy! He went on to advise me on my trip to Caymans. All in all, he and his charming labrador retriever, Max, spent about 45 minutes with me. It wasn't until checkout, where he made sure I got all my discounts, that I found out he was the owner of all three Scubalands! He, as in Mike, not Max the dog (altho Max definitely "owned" Mike :). **Stop reading here if you don't like the personal stories** So I called hubby from the store and told him what I was buying, the fins, mask and booties (altogether for about $150). And he vehemently said we didn't need to spend $30 on the booties, we had neoprene socks at home. I reluctantly put them back, all the while Mike shaking his head. Next day, at our shop taking lessons, hubby went to buy HIS fins and the guy said, "Oh these are the best and you need em. They're only $120 and you'll need these $40 booties as well." Hubby immediately agreed, without trying anything else on and started to check out. His grand total for mask, fins and booties?? $250!! I just looked at him from across the store and mouthed "I am so mad at you right now." This is why I can't take him to the Farmer's Markets. If some nice person says "Here you'll love this and you should buy it," he will! He cannot say no. So now I have to go back to Scubaland and get my $30 booties. I don't mind so much, tho. I have been dealing with ScubaLand North for more than 15 years. They have good products and over the years I have bought multiple full sets of gear and spent many thousands of dollars with them. However, three recent service experiences have have led me decide to not using ScubaLand any longer. First, I took in a Nitrox tank for servicing - I asked for a hydro and an O2 clean. When I picked it up the tank had only been hydro'd and the Nitrox stickers had been removed from the tank. Apparently the associate had written the ticket wrong and only ordered a hydro and not an O2 clean. I offered to pay the difference but Scubaland insisted on charging me for a second hydro test. They would not correct their mistake even when I offered to pay the extra amount for the O2 clean. So I had to pay to have it hydro'd a second time. But having dealt with ScubaLand for so long, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. In prepping for a trip to Bonaire this summer I took in my regulators, BCs, and computers for servicing. I should have checked their work, but I didn't. When I arrived in Bonaire, I realized that they had put the wrong type of inflator hose on one of the regulators. I was forced to buy the correct hose in Bonaire to address this second mistake that ScubaLand had made. Then to add insult to injury, one of the computers that they serviced flooded on its first dive. I had never had a single problem with this computer until ScubaLand serviced it - then it flooded on the very next dive. ScubaLand refused to address the the damage they caused to the computer. Despite the long history I have of doing business with ScubaLand, I will now be switching to exclusively use other dive shops in Austin. They do not take pride in their work, and they do not address mistakes when they occur. So far, I am out of pocket more than $300 for their service mistakes. I've now had three service issues with them in a year and not one time did they work with me or take any ownership of the issues they caused. read more

My wife and I were first certified here back in 1998, and despite the lake being slightly 'frigid' for our dives, we had a great time. After moving back to Austin two years ago, our eight year old son expressed interest in doing the PADI Seal program, so we signed him up. He had a great time and learned a lot; all the credit goes to Ms. Dominique, who was extremely patient and flexible with the kids. It was great to see him learn such a fun, lifelong activity in a low stress environment. Scubaland is a professional dive shop. So many dive shops run by the seat of their pants, but this is a great company that has a clean floor, organized gear, fast service, and good facilities. Courses are taught by talented instructors and the staff are great at directing me in the right direction for gear. Scuba diving is not a cheap sport. Accept it and come prepared. Finding the best internet deal or wheeling and dealing the shops is just a stressful way of causing yourself angst. The service Scubaland provides far outweighs the $20 you might save online, especially when gear comes in that doesn't quite work out the way you expect or needs servicing. read more

Ross did a fantastic job helping me get certified in Open Water diving. I've never had any experience with scuba and I was apprehensive about many things like equalizing my ears and going down deep underwater. Ross' calm professional approach to teaching helped me face my concerns and get to the fun of scuba. He made sure everyone in the class could perform each skill and patiently retaught those who needed it. When I had trouble with a skill he would say "no worries man, we've all been there. You will get it. I believe in you" Ross and Scubaland Aventures are a fantastic way to learn scuba. I'm sure glad I signed up and I can't wait to try my new skills in Florida next month. Best experience ever! While looking to get certified for scuba diving I realized there were a few options in Austin, Texas. After careful consideration and doing my research I decided to go with Scubaland. From the minute I called to schedule classes I was impressed by the excellent customer service and the patience they had with me being nervous about my new endeavor and answering the 10 million questions that I had! I signed up for weekend classes and purchased my gear (snorkel, fins and goggles). As i showed up for my first day of class, nervous and excited, my fears were quickly calmed when I met my instructor Jez Sherlock. I would like to take a minute to talk about Jez and what an amazing, passionate dive instructor he is. If I was nervous or unsure about anything he was quick to calm my fears and never pushed me to do anything I wasn't ready too. He is patient and kind and motivates you every step of the way. HIs knowledge about diving and his enthusiasm keeps you going. Long story short if you have a desire to learn to scuba and you want to get certified by the best, Jez is your man. He will be your ambassador of Scuba and set you up for success. He isnt just doing a job, he makes sure you are comfortable and capable every step of the way, even when its 44 degrees outside and you just want it to be over!! After and abysmal experience with Dive World in Cedar Park I took my equipment to ScubaLand . I can't tell you what a difference it was between the two shops. ScubaLand staff was friendly, courteous and professional. They worked with me and my schedule to get my equipment checked and back to me so I would be ready for a trip to Belize. Having been diving for over 25 years I have been in more than my share of SCUBA shops and I would highly recommend ScubaLand for the kind of atmosphere that makes being a diver fun and the professionalism that makes it safe. read more

Update: We went back to the shop to report the corrosion/auto inflate problem. They offered to replace the inflator mechanism (at an additional cost) and assured us that would fix them problem. The next day we left for a dive trip. Not only did they not fix the problem, they made it worse. The BC still randomly auto inflates, it does it faster than before which makes it more dangerous. And on top of that, sometimes when you intentionally try to inflate it, it simultaneously dumps air. The dive master looked at it and immediately pointed out a problem with how it was installed. Fortunately the boat had an extra BC we could use for the rest of the trip and no one was put into a dangerous situation again. Bottom line - worst gear servicing experience in over 30 years of consistent diving! read more

Just finished my open water certification at Scubaland and because of my odd schedule was able to have two instructors. Steven Neusaenger did my pool sessions and was both patient and knowledgeable. He was able to give those little insights that help a lot. Dominique Lutz did my open water check outs and was just amazing. She was so patient with me when I choked on a skill. Never seemed bothered and oh so happy to help. The sales staff was also great when I came in with questions. Never seemed put out even when I thought I was starting to get annoying. Would recommend this place to anyone and have in fact have done so with some coworkers that expressed interest when I told them how fun it was to learn diving. read more

Though some might fret about the prices of this place, they really do an outstanding job that is worthy of the cost. I had a horrible experience with another scuba school in town, but Scubaland exceeded all of my expectations and made me feel like I was getting a quality certification experience. I have used this shop twice for gear repair and servicing and both times they made mistakes. I will not be returning. The first time I went to have a leak repaired on my alternate second stage reg and somehow got it back with a different inflator hose that was not compatible with my BC. The second time I went to the shop to get my regs serviced. On my next dive trip it became apparent that they had somehow put the BC connector on the inflator hose on upside down. With the high price and purpose of the service, I expected to get my gear back in better, not worse, condition than when I brought it in. I do not recommend trusting Scubaland with your gear. read more

There are plenty of reasons to rate these folks so highly... selection, advice, friendly people, the fact that they are a one-stop-shop for those who might like to get certified, buy their gear, book a trip, and travel with local friends...scubaland can do it all for you... but perhaps my biggest inspiration is their good, old fashioned ethical business practices... I payed for a certification and scuba gear for my girlfriend, who took one class and quit... but Mike and Vikki were good enough to let me transfer the certification to my nephew, AND exchange all the equipment for gear for nephew , without even charging me a restocking fee or for the one class my GF had taken! THEN, I bought an underwater camera, took it to the phillipines with me, and decided I didnt like it...they took the camera back on consignment, and offered me CASH, or store credit, I opted for store credit and they let me spend my credits even before the camera had sold! Mike and Vikki are SOLID, GOOD people, who are a PLEASURE to travel with, and a pleasure to do business with... like myself in my own line of work, they arent after the dollars in your pocket...theyre after your CONTINUING business, which means they treat you fair, and take care of your needs. GREAT staff, I love just popping in to say hi when I can... I will NEVER go to ANY other dive shop in Austin, why would I, when theres a Scubaland North and South, there will never be a need! read more

I'm writing this to tell you about the SINGLE WORST experience I have EVER had with ANY company, not just any dive shop. I dropped off well over $1000 worth of gear to be serviced, including my BC, regulator, air2, dive computer. The woman quoted me a price and told me it would "most definitely" be done in 2 weeks, as I had a dive trip planned. 3 weeks later, I hadn't heard a word; no email, no phone call updating me on the progress, NOTHING. When you leave that much equipment of value with someone, you would like to know what is going on and what they are fixing, its just a common courtesy a good business would be aware of. I called the shop 6 times over the course of 4 days, each time speaking with different people who promised to get back to me. FINALLY, someone left a voicemail that they had spoken with the tech and that they were having trouble "locating" a replacement battery for my computer and he suggested I should buy a more "user-friendly" version. To me, user-friendly implies that I am comfortable with it, know how to use it: not that it is easy for them to find a battery for it. I got online, and was able to find the replacement in LESS THAN 2 MINUTES on both ebay and by calling Tusa. When I went in and demanded to have my gear returned, the guy gave me a sob story about shipping taking "a while". 3 weeks!? In that time I could have walked to the Tusa manufacturer and walked back with the battery myself. Upon checking out, the price was also well over $80 more than the woman who took my gear originally quoted me, yet when I asked why/what they fixed the salesman said "Oh, nothing out of the ordinary." Do yourself the favor, and drive the extra 10 minutes to Oak Hill Scuba, for good reliable service.
