SD Bytes has fixed problems on more than one of my laptops, and I have been happy with their service every single time. I came to know about them after spilling water on the keyboard of a laptop. It caused all kinds of problems, because sometimes the computer was perfect, did some very strange things the rest of the time. The company I have been using for the last 20 years is good, but they were unable to fix the problem and finally gave up. Someone else I knew highly recommended SD Bytes, so I decided to give them a try. Their service is the best I've seen. The exact cause of the problem was hard to determine, and wasn't resolved by any of the standard tools and troubleshooting practices. I'm an IT consultant, and know a lot about this kind of troubleshooting, but am not a hardware person, which means I can't fix computers when they break. The techs at SD Bytes are very good, with plenty of experience, but initially they were unable to solve the problem. After a day or two, the owner of the shop got involved. We had a couple conversations, and it was easy to see he has at least 20 years of experience. I really appreciated his knowledge, and the personal interest he took in my laptop. He used several diagnostic tools, swapped out some wires, tested the transistors, did some other things, put the computer through some stress tests, and finally solved the problem. I'm not very hardware literate, so when my Dell notebook started acting up, I was thinking it's time to buy a new one. It starting running hot (temperature) a year or so ago, and running time on the battery gradually started to decline until about 4 months ago it couldn't run without being connected to power. I was ready to bite the bullet and get a new notebook, but decided to check yelp for possible repair options and found SD Bytes. Brought it in on a Monday, Shannon looked at it briefly, confirmed the battery was dead, and found that he could have a new Dell battery in shop by early the next week. He left me a voice mail 3 days later saying the battery had arrived, and by Friday my Dell was running smoothly with a brand new battery for a little more than $100, waaay more cost effective than a new notebook. The next week I noticed that the LED indicator that lights up when the notebook is being charged was much brighter than it had ever been. I found that the cover over the LEDs was missing. I called Shannon and he said to bring it over. My schedule didn't allow me to get over there until today, and he fixed the issue right away, no questions asked. So this is a longwinded way of saying I'm a fan of SD Bytes, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. I came in with a mini ITX build that I couldn't boot and so I gave it to SD bytes. Turns out I just had the wrong cable plugged into my gpu, a cpu cable instead of a pcle cable. And although I understand that an agreement is an agreement, $140 for changing a cable is insane. I got a 10$ discount but still, cmon. The owner responded saying that its because it took a long time to take apart, when I was troubleshooting I was taking it apart and putting it back together in under 10 minutes. I thought I had totally destroyed my lightning power connector on my prized and beloved, irreplaceable jailbroken Iphone. I tried to scrape the dust out as usual but it didn't solve the issue, and headphones didn't work either. I was sure i was looking at hardware replacement. NOPE! I got the blue screen of death and came with a message that a critical process died. I tried to reboot the laptop in safe mode, but it still wouldn't open. So, I took it to SD Bytes Computer Repair at about 2 pm. By 3 pm, he had it diagnosed and started the repair, which I authorized. It was ready at 5 pm. My son came to me crying. He told me that he had spilled a small glass of water on his desk, but then the water spilled off the desk and down onto his PC tower underneath. Modern computers are made like heat sinks with wide open panels and powerful cooling fans, so a drop of water can quickly fry a GPU. Shannon and Stanley checked everything out and made sure the tower was safe. Sure enough the GPU had fried, but they found me a good deal on a compatible card and got everything done quickly. SD Bytes Computer Repair is my new go to shop to take care of all my computer needs, and I recommend them to others as well. Over the years many computer repair shops in San Diego have closed down for a variety of reasons, and it is harder to find a professional repair shop that provides good customer service. Some shops do good work, but do not help you figure out your options, or answer general computer questions. It seems like a lot pf places nowadays try to get you out the door ASAP once they return your machine. I called SD Bytes between Christmas and New Years figuring they might not be too busy. They were, probably because the shop has a good reputation, still, Shannon arranged to set up a time to talk about what I had questions about. (I have two Toshiba laptops that I am trying to keep alive as long as possible for a variety of reasons, none of them related to cost. One is a Windows 7 machine and the other was running Windows 8.) Shannon suggested a time to drop by when he thought he could provide me with time. When I came by the shop he listened, and we agreed to upgrade my Windows 8 machine to Windows 10. As promised, they completed the upgrade by their deadline and without messing up any of the application software. They charged me exactly what they quoted, and gave me back my original power supply, which is something some other shops I have used more recently have not. After picking up the machine, I have had other computer related questions I was willing to pay to get answered. I e-mailed Shannon, and he was patient enough to answer, and I haven't been charged. Not only is the decor absolutely fabulous, the tech that helped me was friendly and sociable. Most importantly, he gave me a quote that was cheaper than every other place because he didn't even charge me for the parts. My gaming PC went out over the weekend, and I was devastated. I was almost sure I was going to have to pay hundreds of dollars to get it fixed. I looked up several PC shops on Yelp to get diagnostics, but they all gave me the run-around, and wanted to keep my PC for more than a week just to LOOK at it; it was such a frustrating time to find help. Shannon messaged me on Yelp, and already had an idea of what the issue could be based on the questionnaire I filled out via Yelp. I told him, no, and he stated, "I break 9 out of 10 screens when trying to fix Surface Pros, I told him, "I don't care, my Surface is important to me!" As someone who has built their own gaming PC's for almost 20 years and considers themselves a PC expert, I was really hesitant to take my PC into a shop. I recently purchased an RTX 4080 and found that I really needed to upgrade my motherboard and CPU to unlock its full potential. Anyone with any experience knows this could either be a quick afternoon project or potentially days of troubleshooting, returning parts, and testing. I no longer have the time or patience for the latter so I decided to take my PC to SD Bytes along with my new components. And I am so glad I did because this would have been one of those worst case DIY scenarios. The technician caught a defect with the new motherboard (which would have drove me crazy) and detected a faulty cable on the new power supply (which could have been catastrophic). I have an Apple MacBook Air and my keyboard went out. Good luck trying to get to an Apple Store, in that 4 of the 5 in San Diego are closed because of COVID. And the Apple authorized dealer (the one and only) wanted two and a half weeks and $149 just to look at it, indicating if it was a keyboard the total repair time would be 5 to 6 weeks at a cost of $500 to $600 -- nearly the cost of a brand new model. I found SD Bytes and for a fraction of the cost they had a keyboard in stock, did the repair and returned my computer back to me in two days, which is important in that I now work from home because of the pandemic. To be candid, while they properly tested the computer, there was an intermittent additional cable issue with the keyboard that was not caught the first time. They fixed it in one day and, because of the inconvenience, did not charge for the additional cable -- I love a business that stands by its work. My MacBook Air is well out of warranty so I did not care about it going to Apple. I just wanted a knowledgable, reasonable, fast repair from a business that backs its work, and they are all that and more! I've been going to a different computer repair place slightly closer to my home, but when they refused to work on my desktop due to some cat urine. (One of my cats broke into my office and left a present on the side of the tower - which was unrelated to the issue of not booting up.)
