I had a great meal here. The pork chop schnitzel had a great sauce and the mashed potatoes were creamy and flavorful. My wife and I shared some chips to start the meal and they were also good. The pepper aioli has great flavor, a bit runny but still tasted good. We also enjoyed the dessert, house made carrot cake. So why only four stars? Because it's a brew pub that also serve Bud light. I couldn't believe it when the table next to ours ordered four of them. It's anathema to me. Like putting tin foil in the microwave or lending your best friend money. It's such a weak thing that I was stunned. It's like they don't have enough confidence in their beer. I mean if you had a burger joint you wouldn't also sell Big Macs. We have been here several times and they always have the same menu. Good variety and vegetarian options. We made a reservation for the deck on Sunday at 2 (dodging thunderstorms) to meet up with friends. When we arrived it was a brunch only menu. We didn't expect brunch and didn't want this. The hostess didn't inform us when we made the reservation. We thought it was the regular menu. There's nothing on the website stating this. There were no vegetarian options on this menu. I requested a small beer on tap (8 oz) and she brought me a 16 oz., our friends both had water and only one came with a lemon (strange), I asked the waitress to bring me the check when we were finished with dinner, and she brought it to me while we were all still eating. Please inform people that it's a brunch menu. There's a difference between the regular menu and a brunch menu. Brunch from 12 -5 pm?! Interesting. Exeter resident had out of towners visiting and after giving a brief tour of Exeter town center I chose the Sea Dog Brewing restaurant as our late luncheon choice over my usual Green Bean restaurant ( which is excellent ) and I was glad I did. Was impressed with the clean lines of the establishment and food / service was good. A bright cold sunny NH day in late October and this place shined. Décor reminded me of my days in sunny Los Angeles... open and airy... GO RED SOX..... Employees seemed happy to be of service and is showed. My party of three was pleased with the haddock fish and chips dinner portion order. Sister-in-law was happy with the Boston Cream martini but my brother and my beers could had been colder and lacked intensity. Kitchen is slow..... be prepared to wait... but I was fine as we had a lot of catching up to do..... again, Los Angeles vibe going on.... ( chill out ). When food did arrive it was hot and good. Again, I recommend the haddock fish & chips, dinner portions more than adequate.... I took a doggie bag home ( no dog pun intended ). Very disappointing. Have been a few times over the last few weeks. Instead of improving things are headed in the wrong direction: 1. Waited for 25 minutes for a table for 3, yet there were numerous tables empty. 2. Service terribly slow. 3. Chewy chicken fingers. A veggie burger that was a pile of mush. Onion rings that were a pile of hot onions with all the batter at the bottom of the basket - Gross! 4. Cosmo was basically a shot of vodka with a splash of cranberry. Someone needs to be trained! At this point we wont be back. Worth the drive to Stratham to Tailgate Tavern with excellent foid, drink, and service. read more

I had to write this review in hopes that it helps improve everything about this place except the location & friendly staff. It has a ton of potential but what we were served last night was unacceptable. I will say the two stars are for the beers and apps. My sons girlfriend ordered a martini that was supposed to have blackberry liquor in it. What I tasted (and I've bartended for 10 years) was some kind of cosmo with tequila (ALOT of tequila) thrown in. She didn't want to send it back so we paid for a drink she never drank (it was awful). Beers were good. Apps were fried pickles and spinach artichoke dip. Good with those too. The problem came with the meals. My son ordered a burger...med well. The photo below is what he got. A charred burger on the outside ..rare inside. There was blue cheese thrown on the top and some wilted lettuce on the side. 15 minutes later..his fries arrive. His gf ordered a Cobb salad that was smothered in dressing (note: ask for dressing on the side). There was so much dressing she scraped a ton off. I had French onion soup that was ok...pretty bland & chicken wings that were cold. The young lady taking out order was sweet but very overwhelmed. We won't go back unfortunately. This is a great addition to the restaurant scene in Exeter! Sitting outside is better during the day, as the flies by the river start to accumulate at night. There aren't too many vegetarian options, but from what I saw the meat options were for the most part homemade and seemed interesting. The people who I were with had dishes that they all enjoyed too. I wouldn't go back for the food.. the location is great. After beers with a small group for apps, definitely. Service was slow and the server we had was very meek and robotic. Burgers were dry and small portions with very over the top descriptions almost laughable how they describe plates and the tables around us all agreed. Small bowls with basic ingredients.. I'd just come For beer next time, honestly. The beer selection is great if you like sea dogs variety. They let you test which is wonderful! I didn't have the same experience as the other two reviews. This place is well appointed and has some great outdoor seating on the river. The staff was very friendly. We sat at the bar and our bartender educated us on Seadogs various brews. We ordered the wings and the Bang Bang shrimp. The shrimp were awesome with just the right amount of heat and a huge portion for the price. The wings were standard wing fare, nothing to write home about. I have been to the Brunswick, Maine version of this restaurant many times. I consider that restaurant to be a solid 4 star experience. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with my recent trip to the Exeter location. When we entered the restaurant, we were given the option of sitting inside or outside. With the weather being spectacular, we opted for seating on the deck. This is where it started to go down hill. Shortly after sitting down, my wife and I realized that we needed a mosquito net to keep away the flies. In the hundreds of times I have eaten out, I have never seen this may flies. You'd think they were breeding them. I asked my wife if she wanted to go inside but she stated that she noted many flies in there as well. So, we ordered and then waited for our food. Within minutes the strong smell of cigarette smoke made it to our seat. I looked around and realized that there was an alley that ran along the side of the building near the deck. At the time, I assumed that the smoke must be coming from there. As a non-smoker, this I couldn't handle so I asked if we could be moved inside. Our server gladly obliged and gave us a great seat near a window that was smoke free. Unfortunately, the flies were still there. As we were sitting down at the new table, our food arrived. I ordered the Turkey BLT, which I have done so many times at the Brunswick location. Despite having the tomato that I asked to be omitted, the sandwich was excellent. My wife had the fish tacos and said they were good. So, that's all I have to say for the food. If you like the other locations, you will probably like the food at this location as it seems consistent. As a sidebar, it is unconscionable to me that a manager/owner would allow their restaurant to remain open with such a fly problem. I mean, seriously, it is disgusting. I can only imagine flies crawling all over the food in the kitchen. Yuck! When we left, I walked by the aforementioned alley that runs along the side of the restaurant. The source of the flies was obvious in the approximately eight garbage bins lined up along the side of the building within feet of the open back deck. Sitting on a curb in the same location was a restaurant employee smoking a cigarette. The food here is decent but I will not be back until I hear from someone I know that the flies are gone. Or I guess I could wait for the winter since I'm pretty sure the flies are entering from the alley and won't survive the cold. read more

We've eaten here three times with inconsistent results. First time was lunch on a quiet Sunday. Menu looked interesting we were both pleased with our choices of Haddock and chips with side salad with their celery seed vinaigrette and the Street Corn Salad with blackened haddock added. Service was prompt and efficient on the beautiful deck. Dinner on our next visit was a bit less successful. Companion went for the blackened fish tacos and liked them very much. I had the grilled tuna bowl and was disappointed, with its presentation and flavor: palid (no grill marks) chunks of tuna served on bland rice (no discernible advertised lemongrass flavor) bland pickled veg, and chopped raw bok choy leaves drizzled with a bland sauce, they forgot the sesame seed garnish. On the up side, Excellent, happy, bartender served us at the 2 nd floor bar where it was comfortably cool on a scorcher of an evening. The most recent time we were there we sat at the upstairs bar for drinks as we waited the accurately estimated 20 min. for an outside table. Bartender prepared one of us a vodka martini with a very liberal pour. We were seated on the lovely deck and asked for a drinks order which was delivered promptly. My red wine was very warm and tasted oxidized-like it had been sitting on a counter for days. I requested a change and was accommodated courteously with more too-warm red wine. We waited more than 30 minutes for our food to be served. My poblano burger looked to have a canned chili on it and was missing the chipotle sauce. Burger was properly cooked, onion rings were delicious - but not hot, barely warm, when they were served. Fish and chips were plentiful and hot. Salad with grilled chicken was good enough. A mixed bag, unfortunately; I'm losing my enthusiasm for this place. read more

We decided to leave and pay for our drinks AND the wrong apps. Told upstairs bartender we wanted our tab.....she told us she didn't care and that we should take our business elsewhere......the manager shows up and explains they are understaffed. We understood that. Which is why we chose to leave. I told her about here rude employee and the manager defended her......we were told she was rude because they were understaffed and stressed to the limit and that was okay. ..... it's a competitive market here in the restaurant market, others will take my money easily rather than putting up with substandard service with an added touch of rudeness. What a gorgeous location looking out over the river! I'd highly recommend a seat outside on one of the 3 tiers of decks. We stopped for lunch and I had a very tasty shrimp taco plate. Two good size shrimp tacos, which were pleasantly spiced, along with an upgraded side of onion rings (definitely worth it). Hubby had the pub burger which he thoroughly enjoyed EXCEPT it wasn't served on a pretzel bun ( which was the whole reason he ordered it!). Took a break for a couple months after a disappointing experience with the food and service. Came back to give it a second chance and it was..meh. Bartender was very friendly but the food was not. The only vegetable selection is fried Broccolini. So it you don't like that, no vegetables for you. Ordered a side Caesar salad instead of the vegetable, and got a small dish with three bites of salad in it. The rest of dinner was edible but unimpressive. With such a great location and beautiful view, this restaurant could be so much more. It's a shame that it's not. read more

It's a rusticly decorated bar/restaurant nestled in downtown Exeter, right on the river. I walked in at about six and had a seat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly. I ordered the lunch size portion of the fried haddock and chips. I'm glad I didn't get the full size, as the lunch portion was more than adequate. The fish was nice and flaky and was cooked well. It came served on a bed of fries with a side of Cole slaw. The slaw was tasty. The fries were good as well, except for the ones under the fish, as they were a bit soggy. My food arrived very quickly. Wow...this place has really gone downhill fast and furiously. My bets are that this Exeter NH site won't be open for long. Food s terrible now, and the service is even worse. Sat at the bar and the bartender was just awful and miserable. Used to really like the place, but it seems like the local management doesn't have a clue, and the help that is hired there is pretty sketchy.
