I'm so mad at myself that I didn't know about this place sooner!! This is a great place!! We had a great time! Small intimate seating for about 80. Improv is so fun to watch! If you want you could even take classes here if you want to be a part of the fun. Sundays are family shows (rated G). Although Saturday shows err on the side of adult situations, they are not vulgar, a swear here and there. I've been here twice and both times the staff was amazing, warm and welcoming. There is an elevator, you just need to ask for it. They have drinks and snacks, just check on line for what you might find there. Get over there!! You're missing out if you haven't been already!! If this were a 0 star review of Hartford, CT, I would have to give it at least 1 star due only to the Sea Tea theater. We ended up at Sea Tea after Lizzo cancelled her tour date due to illness. The theater is clean, the staff are super friendly, the price is right, and the new balance dads that got up on stage to perform in various improv groups were actually very funny. They were clearly super psyched to have a packed house and it was so endearing. This diamond in the rough of an endless hellscape of a city with absolutely nothing to do made an otherwise bummer weekend fun. If we ever find ourselves in the unfortunate position to return to Hartford, we will return. Keep on keeping on, sea tea crew. read more

This is going to be a special review... #Storytime. On April 18, 2017 I went to a Yelp Elite Event at an up and coming restaurant. It was from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and when it ended I was hanging out in the corner on my phone just chillin'. This beautiful, tall, sexy red-headed thang strutted her hips on over to me and casually told me to come hang out with the rest of the people. So I did. We all talked, chilled, got dessert and enjoyed amazing conversation. I was determined to get her alone so that I could chat with her one-on-one. So I was able to walk her to her car, ‍‍ we chatted a little more... I asked her if I could see her again outside of Yelp events. She smiled and said she'd like that. She gave me her number. The rest is basically history. With that being said I was determined to propose at an event similar to the one that brought us together. In August sometime I spoke to the Yelp coordinator in my area and told her what I wanted to do. I told her I wanted to do something in December and the next month she contacted me with a few ideas. She told me the available dates were 12/5, 12/6 and 12/18. Baby likes odd numbers so I chose 12/5 since they were all weekday dates anyway. So then I began spreading the word to her family and friends. It was important to me that they be able to witness it all. The event wound up being a gathering of about 60+ people to check out Sea Tea Improv's awesome talent and then have the 1st Annual Yelpies! The Yelpies are an award ceremony where 10 were given out to celebrate the achievements of Yelp Elite members throughout the year. There were categories such as "Friendliest Yelper", "Funniest", Best Overall, Rookie of the Year, a few others and lastly... Couple of the Year! Naturally that would be us and it was! So I practiced my speech and the proposal went off without a hitch! SHE SAID YES! Afterward I had everyone come to hangout at the restaurant where we had our first date... Salute! It was an UNFORGETTABLE night filled with love, passion and fun. A special thank you goes to Haley who runs things at the theater. Thank you so much for allowing me to do this in front of everyone and for providing such a great venue. Now every time we're downtown we can point out this place and remember the amazing night that too place there. Sea Tea Improv hosted the first annual Yelpie Awards! We were welcomed with sweet treats from NoRa cupcakes and tastease donuts as well as a Finnish alcoholic beverage called Long Drink. Everything was just yummy. Post unexpected fire alarm, the improv group put on a great performance that had everyone laughing out loud. If you've never been to improv, it consists of interactive and quick-witted comedy. You won't be disappointed to say the least. The theater is in the basement across from the Asylum St parking lot. The lot was full so we parked in the MAT garage by Hartford Stage, a two block walk. Staff were friendly and welcoming, also free stickers which I adore. Bathrooms are unisex in the hall. It's a small place with maybe 50 seats. Intimate but you don't feel like you're on stage with the troupe, which is nice. They also have a family friendly show on Sundays AND tickets hanging for those who can't afford to pay. I just love this idea, as art and comedy and theater should be available to all. I love watching a show here, most fun I've had in a long time...it's enjoyable and a great date night activity while supporting local artists. Its quite a small close knit studio space. They really made you feel like you are a part of the show by taking suggestions from the crowd! As a part of the improv.... the artists so spontaneous and hilarious. The comedy was outstanding. Can't wait to go back. The tickets are as low as $10-$5. Seriously can't get better entertainment for that price!! They have family show nights as well! read more

Thanks Yelp Elite Squad, and Emily for the free tickets to this year's Hartford Improv Festival! I had no idea this theater existed prior to winning these tickets and attending last Thursday's opening even of the festival. There were 3 show with 3 different acts in each show. The acts ranged from some newbies (braver than I would be to get on that stage and what a great job they did!) to more experienced acts (super funny!). We were only able to stay for the first two shows, but really enjoyed them both! Now that we know about Sea Tea, we'll be keeping an eye on their calendar for other up coming events. read more

I visited this theatre for the second time last night and really enjoyed it. We went to "Asking for a Friend with Chion Wolf", which is a fun interactive show where a panel shares advice on a number of questions. The selected audience judges vote on whose advice they like best. There are lots of laughs, and the small theatre is the perfect intimate setting for a show like this. The audience is encouraged to submit information about themselves, which is shared anonymously - and hearing everyone's responses is entertaining as well. I think visiting the Sea Tea Theatre provides something different to do on a night out and I encourage people to check it out!! All ages were in attendance. read more

I absolutely adored this place. A small, quaint, intimate area for comedy. Above Sea Tea is a hustle and bustle of Hartford. You have business women and men, a community that needs revival, and traffic. You could easily drive right past this perfect little place and never know it existed... but alas YELP. I was here for a Yelp Event, and the cast that was on for the Improv night was incredible. They allowed for us to participate, yell obscenities, and interact. There's not much more I could ask for. With a fairly cheap price on local beers (Hanging Hills) and laughs all around, I will do my best to come back. Sick deal, Hartford! Love this! read more

I came here with some friends to see the stand up show on Friday evening. it was only $10 for the tickets to get in and it was so worth it! The group was really funny and the audience was great with the suggestions provided. They have a little bar where they served beer and wine which made for a great addition. If you've never been to Sea Tea yet, you seriously have to make a point of going. They offer so many different improv & comedy shows throughout the week, and there's truly something for everyone. The space has a very intimate vibe, almost that of a black box theater. I am sad that the stand-up open mics have been canceled, it used to be one of my favorite venues to go to work on new material. Hopefully one day they'll get it back up & running. It's in a great location right in downtown Hartford. There's so many great restaurants nearby to stop by for a bite before or after a show. They also offer an array of improv & sketch comedy classes, so if you've ever had the desire to try comedy, this is the place to do it. Last week we went to one of the opening shows at their new theater in Hartford. Sea Tea has been doing performances at different venues as well as corporate and other functions for years, but finally has their own space! First: The theater looks great. Like 75 seats, with refreshments, aka beer and wine. Seats are comfy, the A/C works and the floor isn't sticky. Second: Since its improv, every show is different so you can always expect to see something new. At least 6 shows a week, with different themes, genres and formats. Third: The people are great. Ever been to a comedy show where you genuinely felt the person on stage was a d-bag? Not these guys. D-Bag free. Most of their shows are even PG-13, with a family show scheduled for Friday nights. Lastly: What better option do you have on a Friday night? Go to the movies? $25 for tickets, another $15 for popcorn and drinks, and you still have deal with sitting next to 5 tweens that kick your seat the whole time? Oh, by the way, you could wait 3 months and see that same movie in the comfort of your own home for $1.10! Sea Tea's shows are usually $10 a ticket for LIVE comedy that is fresh every time! I started going to Sea Tea to take classes, thinking I would take the Intro to Improv class to help build my self-confidence. What started as a 4 week class turned into 20 weeks of classes, I couldn't stop signing up! Ultimately, it has turned into what might be a lifetime of appreciation for the art of improv. I also built many friendships through these classes. That has been my favorite part about this pursuit; meeting actresses, aspiring comedy writers, retirees looking for new hobbies, lawyers, students, the list goes on. I appreciate the community Sea Tea is trying to build. I see Sea Tea Theater as a community that tries to welcome all people, all levels, all life circumstances, and the intent shows through - from the diversity in their classes/in the audience, to the content of shows, the social justice undertones of the organization, to the "pay it forward" show tickets. I see this type of community-building as so special and so necessary! I don't know that there are many other spaces like it in CT. Another selling point is that the Sea Tea teachers offer personalized feedback during class for everyone at every level. This must be HARD to do, but it's something the teachers here specialize in; they ask at the beginning what you want to work on, and then they give notes and correction based on your goals. I would not have enjoyed the classes as much if the feedback I received hadn't been tailored to my desire to build self-confidence. Because of the care that my teachers put into helping me meet my goals, I grew enormously. I plan to continue to take classes here, and to attend shows whenever possible. A fun date night spot in downtown Hartford! My husband and I came here for the first time for a Friday night 9pm snow and we loved the variety of acts, the cozy feel of the space, and the interactive nature of the experience. We felt like we got to participate by having our suggestions included in the sketches, and they had a diverse and upbeat cast of comedians. Loved that they offer some tasty non-alcoholic drink options and lots of candy at their snack stand, too! Finally, we enjoyed the structure of the show (longer first part, a short intermission, then a shorter "finale"). We both thought the first part of the show was much stronger / funnier than the second part, but it was still really fun and we had lots of giggles the whole evening. I've been following Sea Tea since their early performances in Hartford Stage rehearsal rooms. They have developed into a highly professional group of artists and they never fail to entertain. Their monthly Sunday night shows at City Steam provide great entertainment at a price you can't beat. (Free!) We often go in a group of 6-8, have some drinks and a light supper, enjoy the show and are home by 8:30, so even when it's "a school night" it's a doable and fun night out. The group takes suggestions from the audience and parlays them into games and sketches that are always original, fun and very creative. I took a class with Sea Tea and left feeling that the cobwebs had been cleared out of all the corners of my brain. Seriously, it gave me mental gymnastics that I had never experienced before. I highly recommend checking out one of their shows for some unique entertainment, and then signing up for one of their classes to try your hand at it yourself. I can't believe that this troupe doesn't have tons of raves! What an interesting way to spend an evening! They are clever, witty, quick-thinking, and very flexible. These people are not novices and we are lucky to have something of their caliber in Hartford. A live mouth-music drum machine while spontaneously rapping Shakespeare- in rhyme- with ideas and objects shouted out by the audience just a minute before. Sea Tea improv is hilarious! Tonight a band of four members performed at Our Lady of Calvary Retreat House at 31 Colton Street in Farmington CT. They were the featured comedy group of an annual community barbecue dinner and comedy night that includes a silent auction raffle with food and gift items donated by local businesses. Upon hearing their name, I would have thought the group would be found under the spelling of 'CT' and upon a search learned they took a funny spin. Just like them. They are 'young'-ish and really having a good time, while using the audience heavily and actually involving guests in the improv. Go see them. You won't be disappointed - and you will love the show and help direct it! read more
