Disclaimer - I really like meat, and vegan/vegetarian really isn't my thing. My review might be out of context for those that love this kind of food. Stopped in for lunch on a Friday with a colleague. First, this place is not easy to eat in. Parking is terrible, and seating is really limited. We got crammed into a tiny table in the back right next to the kitchen and bathrooms. Not ideal. We started with the grilled cheese which was pretty tasty. No complaints here. Well done. I had the Chorizo tamales. Obviously the chorizo is doctored up from vegetarian ingredients. They were just OK for me. Lots of masa and not a ton of filling. The beans and rice they came with were both tasteless in my opinion. The service is excellent here. Really good people work at this place. They also have specialty drinks which were pretty good. Jasmine iced green tea - that kind of stuff. Bottom line - if you're vegan/vegetarian this place probably rocks. If you like meat, go somewhere else. read more

We visited Seabirds to celebrate our daughter's 19th birthday. She recently turned Vegan and couldn't think of a better place to eat and just have a good time. We did have to wait about 20 minutes to get a table inside... but once we were seated and started ordering the food, we felt right at home. Not everyone in our family is Vegan (my wife and I are Vegetarians, and our son is all over the place), so we were not sure what to expect. However, the menu is full of interesting dishes, and we did end up trying various appetizers and samplers. One particular dish that was simply delicious, albeit heavy, was Fried Grits for the Table. We also enjoyed the Flax Jax pancakes. I made a note to check out the Biscuit Bomb on our next trip. The Burnt Brussels Sprouts were too good... for the main course, I ordered the Beets Me Burger and it was quite different from most burgers, but really good. Seabirds Kitchen is vegetarian cuisine done right! My boyfriend and I both love this place, so we decided to try it out for brunch this past Saturday. Our waitress was so friendly and bubbly, she really made the entire experience that much more enjoyable. He and I both ordered kombucha mimosas- they were certainly unique but definitely delicious. For food, we split the breakfast bomb and the chipotle Florentine. The breakfast bomb was a solid 5 stars. They accidentally added cheese to ours, and I'm so glad they did! It was full of flavor and rich in texture. The Chipotle Florentine, however, was not a winner for us. We felt like the tofu was too thick to pass as an egg substitute. The tofu came on top of an avocado mash and a polenta cake, both of which were soft and gooey in texture. The entire dish was topped with a thick and overpowering sauce. It made everything the same consistency, soft and mushy. It was kind of a let down when compared to the top quality of the Breakfast Bomb. We ended our meal with the Brussels sprouts, which always deliver! We hope to come back and try out another dish for brunch, but we probably won't be ordering the Florentine anytime soon. read more

Maybe I've gotten tired of eating meat but lately, I've been hitting up some vegan places. Seabirds rarely fails to disappoint! We got the biscuit which totally hit the spot. The Florentine however was overpowered by the taste of tofu. I would recommend avoiding it if you were looking for something more balanced or where the tofu is masked. The kombucha mimosas are incredible. Make sure to ask for the flavors and how it hits the tongue, but I got the Apple hibiscus whose dryness and flavor really was a game changer. read more

We've eaten here before and ordered takeout today, which we have also done before but had a disturbing issue today. To pick up the food you have to go inside to pay, which was fine before, but today after we paid we turned around to leave and a customer was blocking the exit door. He was not wearing a face mask. And speaking very loudly about not wanting to wear a mask or something (we wear masks to protect staff and other customers). He wouldn't move out of the way, blocking the exit and speaking so loudly we could feel his breath. Very disturbing. Our food was good but the Brussels sprouts were too spicy this time. Usually not this hot and spicy. I couldn't eat them. Not sure we will go back until after pandemic. read more

Didn't think vegan food could taste this good. I'll leave this simple. Brussels sprouts are some of my favorite I've ever had. The jackfruit sliders are good but for me it isn't that comparable to real meat except for the texture (obviously). The taste of the jack fruit comes off as too sweet. Easy parking with valet, my sis and I came for lunch. Vegan establishment with amazing farm to table foods and very reasonably priced. We sat outside on the patio since it was a gorgeous day. We started with the kale peach salad and the peaches were the sweetest freshest peaches ever. Then we shared the burger and kimchi and mushroom tacos. The burger....best vegan burger ever. Secret ingredient, they add almond butter spread which makes it out of this world. I devoured it, it was sooooo good. Need to order every time. The portions were so big that we had no room for dessert sadly. But i eyed the homemade pop tarts and will get it next time. I browsed the menu and decided to go with the Holy Smokes Bowl, a moderately priced item, with a description that appealed to my senses. As I waited for my food, I enjoyed looking around the restaurant with its semi-casual hipster ambiance. The waiters and waitresses were attentive and checked in frequently enough that I had no concerns there. The food arrived, about 10 - 15 minutes after placing the order. The bowl had a lot of different ingredients and I had no idea how it would taste. I dug right in. It was delicious. Probably the best vegan food I've tried to date. In all honesty, I couldn't tell what was what, so I'm assuming that the BBQ jackfruit was definitely the kicker. On the pricier end, but I would come back. read more

Amazing place! We were seated right away and given the option to sit inside or outside. The outside has nicer vibes. We ordered the bibimbap bowl and the beets me burger with natural cut fries. The bibimbap bowl has ingredients I've never tried or heard of but trying something new is a good way to find out if you like it or not. The bowl exceeded my expectations and it had a great quantity of food as well. The burger was delicious. I've never tried a beets and chia patty but it had a lot of great flavor! Today was momentous for many reasons - I rededicated myself to my Fleetwood Mac Spotify station and have never been happier, but perhaps more importantly, I got to love up on R, a San Francisco treat I only get the pleasure of seeing but once or twice a year - and naturally, as we first met in the non-GMO, gluten-free sanctified air of Berkeley, it's only appropriate that we catch up at a place at which we really struggled to decide btwn the local organic broccolini (ancho chile oil/pickled peanuts), purple potato taquitos (complete w almond feta - just like absolutely no one's abuela makes it - unless her name is like Rainbow Moon or something and you grew up on a clothing-optional compound), and whole wheat BBQ jackfruit sliders - a combo that I feel certain will raise more than a few readers' eyebrows. Though I'm generally a food hoarder - some say greedy, I say still starved from boarding school scarcity of delish food - Seabirds is done best when shared - we started with the burnt Brussels (ancho/peanuts), then eased into the warm cauli salad (shaved Brussels, hazelnuts, fresno chiles, gremolata, dates, tahini), kimchi tacos (jackfruit, crema, green onion), grilled shroom tacos (ancho, almond feta), and the butternut enchiladas (black beans, maitakes, sauce on sauce on sauce). I love my carcinogens as much as the next gal, so I found the crisp, lightly acerbic sprouts just divine, tied for second, the cauli salad (hearty, richly complex..but salady) and kimchi tacos. Was also tempted by the holy smokes bowl (bbq jackfruit, black kale, broc, pickled onions, coconut, etc), but alas, I only have so much room in my tum. Skipped dessert as we had lingered long enough to have them close the resto around us - but will obs return for the "chaffle" - churro waffle w ice cream/chocolate/walnuts - and top it off w the cha cha float (buch w ice cream - a combo my tum questions but will absolutely get consumed regardless). Patrons are appropriately Costa Mesa chic, full-sleeves and Skrillex undercuts in their full glory - but also hip families with their model multi-ethnic chilluns - it all read as more just like, a neighborhood place that happens to serve a tiramisu make w gluten-free almond cake, cashew "mascarpone", and housemade kahlua (how.) rather than w normal ingredients. When too lazy to cook, would totally go solo, eat at the bar, and creep on other patrons without feeling weird abt it. Service kind of spacey/slow, but whatevs, the food was yum. Small plates $6-14, salads $12-14, tacos $4-5 each, mains $13-16. Desserts $4.5-10. Wine was a hair more expensive than I expected, most glasses in the $12-13 range, but a strong showing. A 15min drive, the siren song of their homemade shitake/beet/chia burger will lure me back before long. read more

Seabirds kitchen is a vegan gem in the OC area. I found this place while looking for vegan restaurants for my wife (now I am vegan too). We have been here on numerous occasions, and it has a great vibe. It has great seating inside and especially outside where you can chill under some nice trees while throwing back a couple of beers. Their menu is straight forward and has a genre of flavors that will satisfy any appetite or craving. Me personally, I love their jackfruit sliders and beer battered avocado taco. Couple those with their skinny fries and I am pretty sure you will be full. They have a nice dessert menu as well, including baked goods at the counter you can take home.
