Ordered for takeout and it was soooo incredible. Will definitely have to dine in next time. The flavors are insane and the textures of everything taste hearty and meaty. I'm not vegan but enjoy eating vegan food when it's done well. And this place does it well. Really nice portions and very cute and clean interior vibe of the restaurant. I love that they have so many desserts and even home made chili oil. I am excited to keep coming back! The garlic stake strips were my favorite - amazing garlicky flavor and I will be asking and adding more spice next time! But the flavor was great and super filling. Pho broth is also so wonderful. Love the gluten free options too.

Another great meal at the Sun Vegan. Rolls are filled to the max and fresh. Salt & Pepper tofu is light and crispy, I'll always get this dish . Friendly staff. Reasonable prices. Quiet ambiance during off peak hours. Parking is easy in a big lot along Edinger Ave.

The food at Sun Vegan was a big hit with our group. My friend ordered the Au Lac curry and said it was absolutely divine. Several people at the table ordered the veggie rolls and those seemed to be very popular as well. I ordered the tomato noodle soup and the broth was incredible. It was rich, flavorful, and comforting. There were quite a lot of noodles in the bowl though, and since they are not gluten free I didn't end up eating them, but the broth alone was worth it. Some friends also ordered smoothies and dessert and everyone said those were great as well. One thing that really stands out about this place is that they serve fresh herbs with your dishes. It adds so much flavor and freshness and it's something you don't see offered at many restaurants. It really elevates the entire experience. We had a large event there and the restaurant was completely full, probably around 30 to 40 people. The wait staff did their best to accommodate everyone during such a busy time and worked hard to keep things moving. Unfortunately someone at our table was missed when orders were being taken, but overall they handled the crowd as best as they could.

Okay, wow!!! The Sun Vegan is SO good. Everyone who mentioned the lemongrass chickun were onto something because I was genuinely amazed by the portions, punchy flavors, and array of textures. The heavenly salad was really refreshing too. I actually wish I got more salad instead of rice because it was that good. The pandan cake was also great -- the frosting tasted like any ol' frosting, which is great because I was worried about it tasting like an alternative milk, like coconut. The restaurant also looks beautiful and open inside; it's cozy at night and the tables are spaced out pretty generously. I appreciated that because I get overstimulated by lots of noise. One note is that we had a server who asked us 5-6 times if we were ready to order... I was asked like 2 minutes after sitting down lol! I think the waitress said she was new, so I'm hoping that has improved since. It was a little offputting. But otherwise I would 10000% recommend this restaurant. I am definitely coming back! :)

I went last month for a vegan friend's birthday and it was delicious! The owner and staff are super friendly, attentive, and accommodating. We were able to have a large group and still hear each other well.

The Sun Vegan is a definite hole-in-the-wall type of restaurant that I was not expecting to think much of. First off I'm not vegan but I don't mind trying out new places and judging by some of the photos I've seen we figured why not give it a try! During the time we visited, it was on a Friday with a moderate amount of customers so if you're looking for some calm and tasty, healthy vegan vibes, I'd recommend checking this place out! FOOD Salt & Pepper Tofu Not only presentable and balanced with veggies but the crispiness is just right. Pairs perfectly with the dipping sauce that's provided. If you're a fried tofu fan, it's a no-brainer! Royal Noodle Soup GFO Only had a sample of this dish but I can say it's very tasteful and delicious! If you're in the mood for some Bun Bo Hue, you should order the Royal Noodle Soup! Pho Ap Chao This was my dish and I can say it tasted amazing! Pan-fried flat rice noodles is one of my favorite styles of noodles and I think The Sun Vegan did a superb job on this one! OVERALL I'm actually glad my girlfriend recommended this place. Honestly I really didn't expect much since I've mentioned before that I'm not Vegan but the food was very delicious and presentable! I think we'll visit again when we're in the area! Thank you for the delicious meal Sun Vegan!

Items ordered to go: - pho (waaaaaaay too sweet of a broth. It might as well have been a simple syrup. My friend described it as "the worst pho [she's] ever had") - bun rieu (also way too sweet, and distinctly missing in rieu--crab bits; not enough (correct) herbs and veggies) - sausage/cheese pockets (too salty, but a great texture) - chef's plate (rice and sauteed vegetables; a safe choice and exactly what you'd expect. It was fine) The interior is pretty cute, if you can get past the over-the-top framed pictures and portraits. The to-go boxes are individually decorated, which is super cute. The cashier was sweet, but so incredible soft-spoken that it was near impossible to hear her Overall, an extremely disappointing meal. Go to Thien Dang instead.

I absolutely love the concept of this place serving vegan Vietnamese cuisine which is rare to find! Their menu is broad and include things like bun Bo hue and bun rieu. Service also was good and food came out extremely fast. The reason for the three stars was unfortunately I felt that the food was too sweet. The bun bo hue vegan beef and pork pieces were really good but the overall soup base was so sweet. The peanut sauce for the spring rolls also had a slight chocolatey flavor but they were ginormous! If you're vegan though looking for Vietnamese food would still give this place a try!

They have a new worker. She's simply adorable. Food comes out a lot faster than before. They must have a new chef. They improved on the fish tacos by adding tomatoes, cilantro, and creamy sauce. It's spicy! So happy for this upgrade. The spring roll is mostly veggies and a small sliver of fake meat. Peanut sauce with it is divine. Thank you for improving on the menu, worker, and chef.

I didn't realize my last review of Sun Vegan was seven years ago. I've actually been a regular even longer than that--back when they were still at their old location. What keeps me coming back is how refined the flavors are. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu, though my ultimate favorite will always be the pho hue. I'd definitely recommend going here. They have a delicious cake menu too.

I love this place. Spicy Lemongrass Chicken, salad, and white rice were delicious with just the right amount of spice. The spring rolls were simply divine. However, we also ordered Phở Vegetables, and we didn't like the broth. Other than that, this is a wonderful place for vegans

Ann was amazing! Such a kind, fun lady and she's going a great job running this place. I loved the bright yellow color and the decor. The menu has so many great, vegan choices. I had the vegan pho and it was delicious.

Take away box, with a complimentary work of art. I would have taken a picture of the food. But I was really hungry. ‍
    Malissa M.

I can't even put into words how much I love this restaurant. We order from it at least once a week now. Everything is absolutely delicious and the employees are so sweet! My husband usually picks up my order. So I haven't been in the restaurant myself. But he said it's very nice and clean, and neatly decorated. He also said that it's very quiet. That it would be a nice relaxing place to have a meal. Also, they always draw cute little drawings on the take away boxes. I am always excited to see what they're going to draw next. I think it's a very thoughtful touch. So if you're looking for a new spot, this is definitely it. Or if you're considering going vegan, this restaurant would be a great place to start! :)

Ask the Community - The Sun Vegan

Is your tiramisu vegan AND gluten free? Can you modify (reduce) the amount of sugar you use for pho or any other soup dish?

We havnt served tiramisu in almost 2 years. We used to order from the vegan tiramisu company and it was vegan but not gluten free.…

Is this place still in business? Went yesterday during operation hours and they were closed.

Yes, the Sun Vegan is open. Sometimes on a very rare occasion due to an unexpected emergency, they may open a few minutes late.

Can you have an updated menu with dishes that are gluten free please?

Hi All soups can be made gluten free just no soy protein, can sub with tofu/ mushrooms instead, make sure you let us know if you have an allergy so we can be extra careful…

What's the best way to place an order to go? I have trouble when calling and other times I've been left on hold for a very long time.

That's the only way I know and yes I experience that also. Sometimes the owner is doing everything

Is everything on the menu vegan?

Yes everything is vegan, family is also vegan :)

    Any gluten free options?

They serve lots of their plates with rice or rice noodles but I am not sure if any of their sauces are gluten-free

What type if cooking oil do they use?

Rice oil. You can request reduced oil on most menu items

These are my faves we got: 1) Vegan Pho (5/5): The soup was amazing!! Very flavorful with umami goodness from the shiitake mushrooms. I loved the vegetarian meat balls they had in there which was very soft and perfectly seasoned. They also had tofu curds which were bouncy and soft to soak in all the flavorful soup. They used vermicelli noodles in their pho and it worked well! It also comes with vegan Vietnamese ham, onions, scallions, and cilantro. If you were to just choose one item this would be it! 2) Portobello Tenders (4.5/5): These were massive fried portobello mushrooms that came with a tangy, rich sauce. They were very meaty when biting in and the crisp from the panko on the outside was very thin and crispy! I would come back here again to eat vegan Vietnamese food. The best and most flavorful!!

We tried the fried portabello tenders and I got the stir fried noodles. The tenders were nice and crispy, I just wish they had more seasoning for flavor on top. The coating is pretty heavy too, so you'll feel full afterwards. I like that the noodle dish didn't skimp on veggies, protein or noodles! It was a huge portion size and good enough for 2-3 meals. I felt the noodles were a little overcooked and some of the veggies were as well. It could've had a little bit more flavor but the proteins and veggies were good.

We went here for my partner's birthday who is vegetarian and is also mushroom intolerant. We let them know way ahead of booking as well as on the day of. Their menu overall just seems to be based on mushroom varieties. 60-70% of the menu is mushrooms. As a vegetarian restaurant, this shouldn't be the case ideally. There are so many vegetables, grains, and fruits in both traditional chinese and asian cuisine that having a menu w a singular ingredient focus felt off putting. So for a lot of courses they just subbed by giving us an extra dessert?! 3-4 courses were subbed w dessert. Even in execution, I think the idea is there but the cook or technique lacks detailing.
