I called my friend Cindy List, and while she was busy, she fit me in immediately. First I want to say what a beautiful, relaxing and intimate little salon Crown is. It's on the 2nd floor in a super cool area of the West Village. You know when you walk in a place and it just feels good? That's what Crown Salon is like. There was great music playing (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings!!), fresh baked cookies at the front desk (that Cindy bakes herself) and amazing art on the walls, which is all painted by the owner, Alexis (and also for sale!). Cindy and I discussed what I was looking for. You could tell immediately that she understood exactly what I wanted. I showed Cindy a couple of photos and she worked her magic. My hair came out as good or even better than what I wanted! My haircolor was a do-it-yourself job done by myself at home, and in need of some help. She put in several foils and she is fast! Then toned it and put a bond strengthener on so my hair stayed healthy. She also had two other clients that she was working on, and she never became flustered or stressed. Everyone was happy and well taken care of, and we all had a great time talking with each other! Plus everyone was thrilled with their hair when they left the salon. In fact, one of the ladies comes to Cindy from Indiana to get her hair done. And I see why. It will be hard, if not impossible, to find someone at home in L.A. who can replicate this haircut. I may just have to fly back to New York every 6 weeks like her other clients! **And oh, by the way, I forgot to mention that I am a hairdresser myself, and a SUPER picky one when it comes to my own hair! Honestly I wasn't going to leave a review even after receiving the worst coloring job I've ever…read morehad, but I was really disappointed by how Mariah responded so I felt obligated to share my experience. I came in for a balayage to lighten my dark hair to blonde, with 1 ask which was for it not to be orange. Unfortunately, it did come out super orange, but I left convincing myself it was just the lighting. After many friends agreed it was orange, I DMed Mariah on Instagram to see if she could fix it. I came back the next day, but it got even worse. Mariah ended up bleaching my hair again after admitting it did look very warm, and it somehow looked even worse than the day before - more pieces were orange, the highlights were chunky and not blended at all. I've attached a picture of what it looked like right before blow drying (keep in mind this is what the "fix" is supposed to be). She first told me there was nothing else she could do, blaming it on my hair by saying that's all my hair would lift to (even though I have had seamless balayages in one go before), before telling me to come back AGAIN the next day to try to fix it again. She told me that in the meantime I could wear my hair in a slickback (?) Initially, I agreed to the new appointment after she said 100% she would be able to fix my hair. However, I lost trust considering I had already given an opportunity to fix my hair. I found a new salon, and DMed Mariah VERY nicely about it, even thanking her for her attempt at fixing it. I received no response, no apology, no accountability, and saw that she had instead blocked my account. I thought this was super unprofessional, especially considering how understanding I tried to be about the whole situation. Last thing - there is someone else that left a review on Mariah, with very similar experiences to mine about 4 years ago on Google Reviews. My hair was similarly orange with lots of mismatched shades, not blended in to my natural hair at all. Unfortunately, I would not recommend going to this salon for coloring.

And so my quest for hair salons began though it was a fairly short quest as I had found Omar, owner of Flow Hair Boutique. I went inside and asked him about my hair epiphany and how we'd go about making it happen. Once we figured out details, the appointment was set. Appointment time and Omar explained the process first bleach, then toner to get me to the final color. As a newbie, my fascination was very evident in my comments like "I leave my hair to your professional hands" and "Dang my hair is so yellow!" Also because of the drastic change, I was definitely nervous but Omar reassured me the whole time how I was doing, if the bleach/toner was stinging, and built a good rapport by telling stories. You can't really stay silent when someone is working on your hair for two hours to fulfill your hair fantasies. I am not a mime :P. Omar is great and really enjoys his craft as he was flexible with my schedule restraints. Flow is a pristine place from top to bottom and with Omar being the owner, he knows what's up. So how'd my hair turn out? My look went from sleek dark to a cool platinum blonde. It's been crazy seeing everyone's reaction and it was all thanks to the hair wizardry of Omar. He is so talented and it doesn't surprise me how happy I was with the results. To explain a lil more, I have had long hair most of my life (minus that strange time in high school). I get one hair cut a year. Only one. Friendship aside, I really am protective with my hair and where I go. I was due for my annual cut, and surprised visited him and I was so impressed.
