He took the time to talk with us, helped us choose drinks we ended up loving, and somehow managed to be attentive without ever feeling overbearing. He was funny, personable, and one of those people who instantly makes you feel comfortable. By the end of the night, it felt like we'd made a new friend. I've always believed that people make experiences memorable, and Cosmo is exactly the kind of person every restaurant hopes guests remember. Originally opened in 1934, the Blue Moon carries the kind of atmosphere you cannot recreate -- walls covered in decades of music, art, stickers, photographs, and stories. A dimly lit room packed with musicians, writers, artists, and people who genuinely appreciate creativity in its raw form. Throughout the night, the stage moved between live music, poetry, and performances from local artists while the crowd filled the tavern from the bar to the stage floor. Places like this remind me why independent art still matters. As an author traveling all over the United States -- and as someone who lived in the Seattle area for 2 1/2 years -- standing on that stage reading poetry from Purple Rose in a venue with this much history behind it was really something special. What I loved most was how welcoming the environment was. This is a very LGBTQ-friendly, art-friendly space where people genuinely support one another. If you are brand new to open mics or nervous about sharing your work for the first time, this is the kind of place where you will absolutely be shown kindness and encouragement. There were so many talented musicians, poets, and performers there, and you could really feel the appreciation for creativity throughout the room. The setup of the tavern itself is awesome. The stage and seating area wrap around the bar in almost a U-shape, so you can really choose your own vibe for the night. If you want to stay close to the performances and music, there is a dance floor and table area near the stage. If you want something more relaxed, you can hang back near the bar, have a drink, and still enjoy the atmosphere without being directly in the middle of everything. They also have a full bar, arcade games, board games, books to read, and even a small library on the shelves throughout the tavern. Somewhere inside, you may even find a signed copy of Purple Rose that I left hidden and dedicated to the historic Blue Moon itself. Beautiful evening with wonderful people. I wanted to write this review and respond to a few of the negative reviews. It is clear that as much as I would like it to, this bar isn't for everyone. I think everyone should at least visit it once. Different nights, different time windows, and different bands draw different crowds. This gem or diamond in the rough is a neighborhood bar and a musician's bar run by musicians. Some of the 1 and 2 star people may be more at home at the Iron Bull across the way or at a bigger venue. This is a family small venue vibe, so be prepared for it. Many people who play your bigger venues play here for free, so go ahead and pay $10-20 to see them at X venue. The hipsters are present, but most of the people here are not those typical people you find in downtown Seattle or Capital Hill. These people are cool. They are involved in the music scene. Most of the people in the bar are warm and friendly. It is like a Cheers vibe once you get to know folks. There are some patrons who are a bit weed heavy, but unfortunately weed and jazz/funk music tend to go hand in hand. I agree, they should not be right outside the door. They should be around the corner like most people do when they are there. The door man should handle that. Sometimes you will just be in a bar with idiots sometimes, but overall the people there have shown me nothing but love and respect. Friday nights are by far the busiest nights because people like to boogie and have a good time. There is a huge amount of college students during school season because they want to go dancing somewhere close. I too was sad when Rain Sushi closed down next door and was excited to see them re-open up in The Seamonster and offer Sushi. Rain Sushi chefs were some of the best in town. And if you were gluten and dairy free, they hooked you up if you let them know. I do understand that closing that down was important when they had their kid, so hopefully one day they will open up somewhere again. They are awesome people and amazing. Bottom line, this bar no longer offers Sushi, so consider going elsewhere or maybe check out May Tai for some really great authentic Tai food or Kabul for some great Afghan Cuisine. There are so many great places to eat in Wallyhood and surrounding areas. Now, let's talk about The Seamonster food offerings. While they may not have their focus on their food, they make some tasty goods to fill up on or simply have a snack. Their food quality has improved even over what it used to be which was still really good. There will be a bit of Spanish flavor in their cuisine because of the owner. They have great soups, tacos (way better than the roach coaches and healthy), and their food is always changing to have some variety. Because I have to eat gluten and dairy free, I ask for options that does not have that. The tacos on corn tortillas are your best bet. Make sure to let them know you want food without particular ingredients you are sensitive or allergic to in them. The musicians here are world class. People from out of town come to this bar because they are that good. The ones with the biggest draws tend to play on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. I say Tuesday because that is when McTuff plays. Funky 2 Death plays on Friday. The bar owner even jumps in on a song or two. This band has played the opening of Seahawks games and have had some pretty notable and amazing guests including Mycle Wastman from The Voice. If you are lucky, you may even hear the group leader aka "Woogie D" DJ and play some classics. This is one of the best open mics in town. Majority of the people who perform at them are accomplished musicians and even ones that you have to pay to see. The only thing is you should be prepared to buy a few beers or ciders when you come to play. It help keeps the bar open. And you likely will form some great networking contacts that will help you get gigs or meet other musicians that will help your career. Also, many musicians who play here teach others, so if you need lessons, there are many who are there who can help you grow professionally in music. This bar is not perfect. It can always use improving, but the owner is committed to making it better. He has done some remodeling and improving already. This place has seriously improved. There is no old beer or pee smells at all because they take the time to clean the floors. I however can't always vouch for some seldom patrons that occasionally may walk in. Those that insult the people there don't know them like I do. There is actually quite a diverse demographic present at various times in the bar. All the different stereotypes typically show up here at one point or another. One thing I have noticed is it is a place you can show up and be yourself as long as you aren't an a-hole. So go ahead and talk to some people. They likely will talk to you back and even may make an instant friend. See you there!! read more

It was a Friday night. My cell phone died. I kindly asked the bar tender for a phone number for a cab, not the phone to use, just a number. He was nice and handed the door man, Sean (sp?) from Detroit, a cell phone to call me a cab. We walked outside. He put his arms down and said "can't you just Google a cab yourself?" My [courteous] appeal that my phone was dead made no difference. I walked back to West Seattle starting at 1:30 am, a 12.4 mile walk according to Google maps. I made it home just before 6 am. On my walk home, I stuck to main roads and bus routes, thinking I could hail a cab or jump on a late night bus. I had no luck. Since nothing in this town ever seems to be open late, or 24-hrs, there was nowhere to stop in and try to use a pay phone. I know many places reviewed on Yelp monitor their reputation here. If this is the case, I encourage the management/ownership at Sea Monster to remind their staff that calling cabs from a bar is not a big deal and to always keep things in perspective while being courteous (lesson #1 in "Roadhouse," an awesomely-bad movie). Working at a bar isn't like being a combat medic or something, the consequences of your actions aren't that serious. So where is the stressed out attitude coming from? read more

Drinks are thoughtfully made, unique, and bursting with flavor every time. One of the few places in Seattle where a 15 dollar drink actually feels worth it. Gorgeous ambience, and they host some really cool events. Bring a friend/date here you won't regret.
