I found myself here unexpectedly after a semi-routine visit to my regular vet sent my friend and I to Seattle Veterinary Specialists in Kirkland with a very cranky cat in tow. It is some place I never wanted to go, but I wish to share my experiences with you. First, my cat's vet called ahead to let them know we were coming. I would strongly recommend that. At that point in time they thought my cat's heart was failing. So, upon entering my cat was immediately whisked away. It reminded me of a real hospital at that point where the urgency was not only a claim, but enacted in every way. They collected the information I could provide and then they escorted my friend and I into a room. In the entire time I was at that location I sat in an exam room twice and neither time was my cat with me. I had the distinct impression that I was there because I was visibly distraught and the prognosis could potentially be worse. Speaking of visibly distraught - I was in blubbering tears. I was not ready for my beloved pet to pass away. She is in her middle years, not her elder years, and she seemed mostly fine except for this breathing problem she was experiencing. Yet, the staff was completely respectful and sympathetic. They never made me feel like the blubbering mess that I was. My cat was admitted overnight where they did a battery of tests. They frequently kept me updated throughout the process and was very forthcoming with all the pricing. I ended up spending less than what they estimated. Was it cheap? No. But considering the tests - an ultrasound, an echocardiogram, blood tests upon blood tests, a few biopsies, and IV and medication - it was cheaper than I thought it would be. Unfortunately the cause of her problems was not determined, but I am impressed with them because I later found out that my primary vet wanted another test done that was very, very expensive and this location declined it because they did not feel that her symptoms drove the need for that particular test. I don't know if I was clear minded enough that if I had been presented with that option I would have known enough to say no. It would have confirmed a theory, but it would have done nothing to help my cat's health. The one complaint I had was when my cat was discharged there was some confusion which resulted in us waiting an extra 40 minutes while the front desk communicated with the vets. The paperwork that I was told I would be receiving never happened, but I believe it was their anxiety of getting us out since my cat was not very happy and I would not describe her as an ideal patient. Overall I was very impressed and would recommend this location. read more

Blue Pearl SVH was able to get us in immediately for our emergency this weekend. Even over the phone before we came in, they were kind, patient, and helpful. We had no idea that - that very afternoon - we would learn that what we thought was constipation would actually be advanced, aggressive cancer, and that our golden retriever, Isaac, might have only days or weeks left with us. We are still absolutely devastated, but Dr. Wassink communicated with such clarity, empathy, and grace that we had a clear understanding of what was happening, and she explained how we could help Isaac in his final time with us. We were so impressed by the speed, service, professionalism, and care at this pet hospital that we will wholeheartedly recommend it to our friends and neighbors here in Kirkland. read more

My dog Dee has been sick. Too long and complicated to tell the full story, but we had to take her to the ER the other night because she had a very severe reaction to a vaccine. They were so great and caring! They obviously loved her and kept us well informed throughout the whole process, which has been so difficult with COVID-19. They met us at the door with masks and our consultations were over the phone. They answered all of our (many) questions and explained everything very well. The many doctors and technicians, including Martine and Dr. Blackstock, Dr. Carr, Dr. Runyard, and so many others (I'm sorry, this has been difficult and her situation was so odd that I don't know everyone who helped us, but they all did so much) were absolutely amazing. The bedside manner was incredible. Thank you so much for everything, and we'll see you for her next ultrasound in a month or so! read more

At around 6:00pm tonight, my 16 year old dog a seizure. Called our vet and they said to take him to the ER. Called the ER in Redmond and they said to take him to Seattle Veterinary Specialist as they have neuro capabilities. In the interim, my dog has had more seizures (cluster) and is in terrible discomfort. Called and basically begged them to see us and was told they are out of room and refused to treat my dog. read more

We are so grateful for the doctors and their wonderful staff at SVS. Without going into all the details of their combined efforts throughout the night - they, essentially, saved our dog's life and 36 hours later, he is now home with us this evening. Drs. Rubinstein and Garretty are both exceptional, as well as their nursing staff --and we would recommend SVS to anyone. We can't thank them enough. Also worth mentioning: we arrived at SVS ER in a time of crisis and the front desk greeted us warmly and moved quickly the instant they saw our dog was in heart failure. Thank you, SVS. read more

I had to make the heart wrenching decision to walk my beloved Patricia to the Rainbow Bridge a week ago and as it was after hours I found these wonderful people who were amazing. We were taken right to a room, allowed as much time as we wanted with her, the tech and vet were very informative with what we could expect. It was peaceful and as perfect as this situation could be. I picked her up yesterday and the presentation of my little one was perfect and thoughtful. I'm so thankful for these amazing and loving people who got me through this. read more

Please do not bring your dog here! I always had their number and address ready, in case of an emergency. Well, our dog became sick and we drove to SVS from Seattle because I thought they were supposed to be fantastic. Our dog proceeded to vomit constantly during the FOUR HOURS they kept us waiting. Techs would come in and apologize--saying that there weren't any emergencies, but that they had people there ahead of us (understandable). We were understanding until the very end, when I was walking the hallway and noticed that multiple animals were being seen that had come in after us. Additionally, it was obvious through the easily-heard conversations between the vet and owners that these animals weren't crashing like our dog was...yet, they were at least getting initial consultations, something we hadn't even had during our four hours! At that point, I BEGGED someone to see our girl--after so much vomiting (and only being 6 pounds to begin with), she was completely listless. When we arrived, she was ill, but, after such a long wait and no interventions, it dawned on me that we might honestly lose her. Despite my pleading, no vet came to even look at her. To this day, I still don't understand their decision. I finally called ACCES Animal Hospital from the room we were waiting in and explained our situation. They said that they'd see her immediately, so we left SVS. Thank goodness! ACCES was fantastic. I know that our dog wouldn't have been as far gone as she was if she hadn't been left to deteriorate at SVS. They didn't even offer fluids while we were waiting for a vet! I feel that they were absolutely unprofessional and bordering on negligent. Please avoid this establishment. read more

We have been very pleased with the love and care that Oliver (dachshund) has received over the past year. Last January he became very ill. We were told by our then current vet that he had a "bug" and would get over it. It's a long story that I don't need to get in to, but the end result was being referred to SVS in Kirkland. Oliver ended up having 4 blood transfusions (his hematocrit was 10 when he was admitted, normal is 35) as he was very near dead. He had an autoimmune disease and had developed diabetes as well. The care and concern that was shown to Oliver during his 8 day stay was more than we could have hoped for. They encouraged us to come and visit him while he was in intensive care. Oliver makes a visit once a month to see Dr. Hurrell (our hero) to check his blood and glucose levels and make sure that he is still on track. We are forever grateful to the staff at SVS Kirkland! read more

Our dog was ill, and every ER room in the Seattle region was backed up for at least 6 hours. Our dog isn't established at this facility, however, when I called the Kirkland location, the doctor spent 20 minutes on the phone with me, without knowing me, diagnosing the issue and guiding us on what to do. Our dog is now much better. This facility and the people that work here are compassionate professionals that sincerely care for the community they serve and the well being of animals. Isabella in the ER was nice when we had to bring our two dogs in after a nasty fight. The wait times are absolutely abhorrent though, and you'll have to take out a second mortgage to pay your bill at the end of the day. Yikes! read more

I'm a very particular veterinary client and absolutely give SVS 5 stars. They were exceptional at every point. I'm a former vet tech, former pre-med student, crazy dog lady, and have been heavily involved in rescue for decades. I'm a very particular veterinary client, and I have good knowledge of animal issues and high expectations. SVS didn't let me down! After seeing another vet who was totally clueless (long story why I was even there), I called SVS with a few questions. (Actually, I called while sitting in the kennel at the vet, but that's not particularly relevant I suppose). The person on the phone was friendly and very helpful. We needed to see a neurologist (ok, the dog did), and neurology was booked out for at least a week, so they explained we could come in through emergency, and would be assigned a neurological consult after the initial veterinary consult. We arrived with a drugged, scared and snappy 120 lb rottweiler who could not walk at ALL, and the staff couldn't have been better about accommodating our needs, and more importantly, *listening* to what we had to say. I appreciated that they listen to owners and adjust accordingly. They'd brought out a 'gurney' for him, but it really was too small and would absolutely make him panic. So instead they had more people come out and we carried him in slings. Due to the nature of emergency, his resistance to examination, inability to walk, and so on, we were there for a long time, but they checked on us often and were very kind. No less than 6-8 people were involved with holding up his slings to try to examine him 'walking'. After going home with steroids and tramadol, with the intent to come back through emergency on Monday (still no neuro appts), they called over the weekend -- an appt had opened on Monday! Great customer service. The neurologist was fantastic. He had a great manner with the dog, and was very flexible about working with us to examine him safely. After the exam, he gave us a really thorough explanation and answered all our questions. The neuro exam rooms have great white boards with a large, permanent diagram of a canine spinal system to enable better explanations. He was not only thorough but provided very conservative options and did not push surgery. Additionally, the clinic is extremely clean and comfortable, and does not generally have that vet clinic smell. Very nice accessible bathrooms, coffee, tea, etc. There is a really nice rehab area as well. I also noticed the floors near neurology were of a no-slip material, which was really helpful. There's no question where I'll be coming for any specialist needs or veterinary emergencies! read more

Kent Vince and his team were terrific. Levi has an injury that just isn't healing. I did a ton of research and knew that PRP would be the best option for us. Dr. Vince laid out all the options, including surgery which I opted against, and I was able to get the PRP treatment done 2-days later. Don't get me wrong, it's not cheap here, but you are getting state of the art equipment and board certified veterinary care, that costs money. Fortunately for me, I have pet insurance, so the slightly higher cost at this hospital was worth it for me. Mistakes happen at human hospitals too, but I genuinely feel they really care here and are doing their best to help you make the best decision for you and your pet. I could have saved maybe $100 on the PRP with someone else, but I am so impressed with Dr. Vince it's worth it for me. My heart aches for those that money is the determining factor in their beloved pet's care. I couldn't bear to make a decision to end my dog's life because I couldn't afford it. All of the staff is absolutely amazing! We truly believe all of the best vets and specialists in the area work here. They have literally saved our sickly kitty's life on multiple occasions and we are forever grateful. We really appreciated how well they stayed in contact with us for all of our cat's health updates. Plus, their team was always available by phone and provided quick answers to any questions we had. They're very methodical in how they approach testing and treatment, which we really respect. We also like how they didn't try to force us to do anything and instead presented us with their findings and options, which we felt was a more pleasant/considerate way to go about it all, especially given the sensitivity of the situation. Our bill was pretty high at the end of the stay (both times, our cat had to stay at the hospital for several days) but we understand the amount of resources that went into our kitty's care. I loved the efficiency, honesty, transparency, directness and compassion of SVS. My mini-Dachshund Molly was admitted there in 2018 for 5 days due to neutropenia, low blood cell markers and potential sepsis. They were forthcoming and kind despite being overworked and overextended. I received input from two vets, I forget their names. Both were so incredibly present and professional so unlike standard vets at other nearby institutions (Brookfield). read more

She basically charged me $1500 to tell me the same things the regular vets said and offered zero new information. When she gave my dog an ultrasound, the razor must have been dull because they scraped the hell out of him. I called to tell them and the office manager said it was from his harness. I haven't visited the Kirkland vet clinic in person but my experience with them was great on the phone. My dog got into chocolate & walnut edibles and every where else told me take her in!!! NOW!!! I had called a few places, including her vet office & blue pearl was recommended as emergency care. I followed blue pearl's recommendation on care of monitoring instead of bringing her in. I'm very happy with their recommendation as they could if made easy money. I appreciate their honesty & the way everything was handled! Thank you very much staff! Update: They did refund $200 for my trouble and the medication that was unusable because they changed it a day after they sold it to me.. Well I appreciate this effort I still would not recommend this practice. I brought my dog to SVS Blue Pearl kirkland Emergency for a small abscess on her tail Because we are unable to get her into a regular vet. Because it looked infected I didn't want it to turn into a bigger issue and so I chose to go with an emergency visit. Dr Quin said she needed to open it up and clean it out and recommend it be tested for the appropriate antibiotic to be prescribed , all made perfect sense Even to the tune of 619$ ( which dident matter if it helps my dog) Still when I arrived to pick up my dog, The vet technician brought her out to me screaming in pain and biting at herself , So much so everyone in the parking lot was looking at us with concern... And since I've never seen my dog act this way, Not even coming out of a previous surgery, I then asked the vet tech what was wrong as I'd never seen my dog act this way... She said "she didn't know" and that my dog was sleeping in the crate just a few moments earlier And Perhaps I brought her in that way ?!? She then said "she wouldn't bring my dog out to me if it was in that much pain" .. I responded with, She wasn't like this when I brought her in, In fact this is the way I would bring her to you & You Obviously did bring her out in this much pain because she's screaming in pain right now & I'd never seen her this way before... I told her I was concerned and wanted them to do something to help with the pain in order for me to be able to drive her 10 mi back to my house without getting in a wreck. The vet tech said she didn't think they could give anything to "make her be quiet".. I then told her I didn't want her to be quiet as I wanted her to have less pain And that she needed to take her back in and help her As I wasn't leaving there with my dog in that much pain. They were able to give her another sedative of which I was able to then get her home safely. The next day I received a survey through email of which I responded with my dissatisfaction of that experience. Then I discover they did not give us enough medication or anti-inflammatories to last us until the test results came in Of which resulted in me having to drive back to Kirkland and spend another $109 on clavamox that they would change the next day and I would not use. Meanwhile they had their damage control representative D reach out to me to discuss the survey I filled out.. I expressed my frustration and dissatisfaction with the interaction I had with the vet tech.. Of which D alluded to the fact that perhaps the vet tech was not responding well to the way I was reacting to my dog being in pain ?!?!? Never mind the fact that she also told me that they sent out a vet tech who apparently had not Been a part of the original procedure And was "just filling in for someone else" and had not read the file and did not know what had happened with my dog and was not prepared to be in that situation with my screaming dog and and this terrified upset owner. Needless to say this has all led into multiple trips back and forth to SVS in order to fill prescriptions that they continually did not provide enough of. At one point they tried to get us to book another appointment to the tune of $160 so that they could simply look at the tail in order to prescribe a anti-nausea medication that they suspected was needed. We didn't do that as We we're able to get her in to our vet who then recommend SVS finish filling the prescription that They had originally prescribed but underfilled. When I called SVS to have this happen they told me they couldn't do it and sent me back to my vet.. My vet said he felt because SVS originally wrote the script and had the information that they did not provide to him or myself , That they needed to follow through with their original plan of action. It took no less than possibly 9 phone calls back and forth and 4 emails that I sent to Debbie ( Of which she never once responded in writing ) And four trips back and forth to Kirkland All in order to have that one prescription filled. This all occurred within 2 weeks... All for three refills of medications that should have been filled appropriately on two visits ( All during a pandemic while I myself am trying to work full-time ) .. And now With all the medications I have picked up we have spent over $1,000 on SVS Blue Pearl Kirkland , All in all id say There are other emergency vets available within the area that hopefully wouldn't take advantage of their customers in the way that I feel we have been taken advantage of And I would highly recommend if you are trying to find a specialist , Do your research as there is always another option!!! read more

Two weeks ago, my Westie was mauled in front of my front door by my neighbor's lab-mix, who was loose. It was tramatic, dramatic and the side of my house looked like a Stephen King novel, as it was covered in blood (as was my dog, who screamed in pain, and me). It was awful. I called my vet (who I loved), but this was at 10pm and I got a recording referring me to this emergency vet after hours. Despite knowing Kirkland quite well, I got lost finding this vet. It is right by the Kirkland Municipal Court, for those who've never been, and it's down a long, winding driveway. You cannot see it from the cross-street. I went late at night and got lost and was freaking out. Once there, I was taken aback with the size of this hospital and how immaculate it was. You could literally eat off the floors here. And the receptionist and the dr were super, super nice and calming to me and my beast. The vet was extremely knowlegeable, and she explained every step she was taking, and outlined all my options clearly. My dog and I were the only ones there when we arrived, so we didn't wait long at all to be seen. However, after 20 minutes or so, another doggie came in who was severely dehydrated, so the staff had to prioritize and focus on this dog before mine (which is totally understandable). I was worried, too, quite frankly, about this other pooch, as she seemed to be suffering from a bad infection stemming from a botched spay job "at a bad vet in Kent" (as per doggie's owners). My dog was okay, despite some lacerations and puncture wounds and a split ear (darn it, there goes our aspirations for Best in Show at Westminster!). But even after she was brought out to me in the waiting room, we still had to wait nearly an hour to be "discharged". Maybe it was even over an hour. My time orientation that night was not the best. Suffice it to say, we waited a LONG LONG time, just to get beastie's antibiotics and discharge papers and pay. The bill was WAY less than I had imagined it would be for an after-hours walk-in emergency. For the exam, shaving and cleaning and dressing the wounds, pain meds and antibiotics, it was less than $250. I liked how this vet followed up with our regular vet, too. My vet got the faxed report of the whole incident and subsequent treatment the next morning. Despite the long wait time there, I can't speak highly enough of this emergency vet. I hope never to go there again, granted, but boy, it's good to know it's there. read more

So they are going to kill my dog because they want more money - they want an exam of my dog - horrible horrible horrible during this time. We are there at some of the worst times of our lives. I experienced nothing but professionalism from all the staff members at Blue Pearl. As pet owners, we want to feel that they will love our pets as much as we do and treat them kindly. From the moment they rushed out to help me unload my pup, to frequent updates and letting me borrow a boot instead of purchasing. I have been taking my cats to Blue Pearl hospitals for years, but I recently moved, and this weekend was my first time taking a cat to the SVS Kirkland Emergency Department. The check-in process was slow, but they were clearly very busy. Every other aspect of service was excellent. All of the staff I interacted with were calm, compassionate, friendly, and very informative. My cat was hospitalized for 2 nights, and the veterinarians called to keep me updated as to how she was doing. The vet techs and nurses emailed and texted photos and short videos. We were also emailed a detailed cost estimate and daily updates of actual costs. The check-out went smoothly. We were sent home with all of the meds my cat will need, as well as very clear instructions regarding how and when to administer those meds. When I had a question about a potential medication side effect in the middle of the night, someone was there to explain the situation and give me good advice. I am incredibly thankful for the great care that my cat and I received. read more

I would not recommend this facility if you have a very sick pet and are looking at euthanasia. We did not feel very much compassion for our experience and our kitty was scared due to factors that were within this facility's control. I understand euthanasia is always difficult but there is room for improvement and I've done my best to write factually and with specific suggestions. The bad experiences started when I first called. I explained that my cat was a current internal medicine patient and we would be bringing her in that day for an emergency visit and that we may need to euthanize her that day. They asked "What's a good phone number for you." I provided my husband's number as my phone was dead. The person on the phone then said "We have never seen your cat before." The tone and word choice was not compassionate towards someone who had just said they were looking at euthanizing their sick cat. After exchanging the appropriate details we dropped off our kitty. We received a call an hour later. After consulting with her vet we agreed it would be best to euthanize our pet that day. I was told they would prepare our cat and we would be put in a quiet room where we could spend some time with our kitty. When we got there we were taken to a room but it was not quiet. We could hear faculty laughing and joking in an adjacent room the entire time we were there. I appreciate that an animal urgent care is a difficult place to work and I don't wish their team to be stressed, but it was uncomfortable to experience our grief while being able to hear all of this going on right next to us. After completing paper work for the euthanasia we waited for some time. A vet tech comes in and tells us they are having difficulty placing the IV catheter because our cat is stressed and they will need to sedate her to do it. We say okay and wait for about an hour. They come in again and say they still cannot get the catheter in and would need to further sedate her. I ask if we can see her before they administer the next round and they say okay. When they bring her in she is heavily sedated and very scared. We comfort her as best we can and when she is calm again we hand her back. They gave us a buzzer that was meant to be used to communicate with them. They pretty much never responded to the buzzer when we used it. We were left alone in the room with no way to contact anyone the entire time and we were there for about three hours. The only time I remember there being a response to the buzzer is when we hand the cat back at this point. We are told it may take a while for the second round of sedatives to kick in and we do not hear from or see anyone for another hour, maybe an hour and a half. We try the buzzer multiple times hoping to get an update or ask to comfort her while we waited for the sedative to kick in. When they bring her in again she is so sedated she has trouble recognizing us. We are told to use the buzzer when we are ready for the Dr. Because we have been waiting so long and our cat was so stressed we say we are ready for the Dr now. We are told "she will be in as soon as she is able". We wait another half hour. While we are doing our best to comfort and calm her in that time we can hear vacuuming happening near by. It gets very close and loud enough and it really distressed our cat. I try buzzing them to ask if they can stop and no one responds. Finally the Dr comes in and we are able to put our kitty to rest. It was a total of five hours from drop off to the end of the visit. It was a very drawn out and traumatic experience for both our pet and ourselves as owners. I will always worry that our cat was scared in her last moments and feel guilt over the fact the circumstances around her death could have been improved had the staff at this office shown a bit more compassion and practiced better communication. read more

This past spring I took my healthy, active, playful cat to the vet because she had a mild but chronic cough. I was referred to Dr. Hurrell, who diagnosed Isis with asthma. By the end of August, she was dead. My late father was a veterinarian, and my brother recently retired from his vet practice in another state, so I naturally trust and respect veterinarians. Dr. Hurrell changed all that. To treat the asthma, Dr. Hurrell prescribed a steroid cream applied to the ear. But the dose was more than four times greater than necessary! The drug information sheet I received didn't mention the fact that diabetes is a side effect of steroid creams, but shortly after treatment began, my beautiful kitty developed diabetes. Then her misery really started. At one point I was administering the steroid cream, a liquid bronchodilator, a liquid antibiotic, and a liquid blood thinner, as well as injecting insulin...twice a day! Isis wasn't happy and active anymore; instead, she was sedentary and skittish, hating the meds and mistrustful of me. She couldn't tolerate the blood thinner either, which made her foam and drool. I eventually weaned her off the steroid cream (you can't stop it abruptly) and started using an inhaler, but after multiple visits to my regular vet we couldn't get her blood sugar levels stabilized, and she had two strokes within a month. I had to end her suffering with the help of yet a third vet, who euthanized my sweet cat at home. All of this was avoidable: her cough was mild and not life-threatening. The diabetes and subsequent strokes were a direct result of the steroid cream. And the total cost of clinic visits, meds, tests, and hospitalization was well over $7K! If you'd asked me whether I'd pay that much to make my beloved kitty well, I'll admit I might have hesitated...but instead I paid that to destroy her health, make her miserable, and eventually euthanize her. Needless to say, I'll never return to this clinic. read more

Parking: huge parking lot and spaces right up front are handicap where in the event of an extreme emergency it is likely you could pull straight up to the front door so long as someone is not parked in the handicap space. They even have an ambulance. If they have an ambulance I wonder if they are the official vet for K9 Police officers I noticed a police station near by. Huge waiting room with typical emergency room chairs a flat screen with cable TV. Free coffee Kurig type machine, vending machine for snacks, huge clean restrooms with multiple stalls. Lots of exam rooms and an ER. I like many reviews before me am here for Kitty kidney failure on a 15 year old cat. Tonight prognosis is not good. We are giving the cat fluids to see if his blood count panel numbers start to head in the correct direction. If there is no movement in numbers then there is no hope and Fat Baby is dying. The Dr. was awesome. I want to attempt some care before giving up while trying to reduce some costs. Dr. and I came up with a game plan after the initial estimate was completed to reduce some of the costs but could still monitor my kitty, give him fluids and meds, and then reevaluate in 24 hours. 2 day overnight care kitty kidney failure is aprox $4500. That's in addition to the $3k we spent over the past 2 months going to different primary care vets. We should have just come here in the first place. I will know for future animals. This facility also does blood transfusions. Other vet hospitals do not. This facility has an onsite radiologist and internist so you don't have to wait for sending labs and X-rays out for review. We took our golden retriever to SVS six years ago when she had a seizure. The neurologist examined her and put her on medication to help prevent more. They also gave us meds to stop a seizure once it started. The quality of care was excellent. Two weeks ago, our dog was in extreme pain and we took her in for emergent care. She had been in pain for some time and hid it from us. It turned out that her hips were inoperable and our local vet (Snoqualmie Ridge Vet) not only didn't recognize her discomfort, but made it worse with rough examination of her hips. SVS admitted her and gave her pain medication. Consultation with an orthopedic surgeon along with blood work and ultrasound showed that there was nothing they could do to help her other than palliative care. We needed to euthanize her. It was the most painful decision we ever made. SVS provided a lounge where we could have a last visit. Our poor dog was in terrible pain. We kissed her goodbye and asked the vet to stop her pain. The process was humane and was sensitive to the dog and to us. We are very grateful to SVS for the excellent care and compassion. Thank you! read more

Note: This is a comment on our experience with staff. We cannot comment on the experience or training of the vets or their care of animals. However, a bedside manner is important to us, and we figured we would put our review out there so people can make their own decision if that is important to them, too. We had a terrible experience here and will not be coming back, nor recommending their emergency hospital to anybody. Our puppy had been suffering from bad diarrhea for three days straight. On the third day, it was every 30 minutes and was after he got into some styrofoam. We called our vet and they said we needed to take him in ASAP and told us to come here. I called ahead, just in case, and asked whether we should bring him in. They said absolutely, that was a reason to be concerned, and to come in right away and said he could be seen in twenty minutes. So we rush over and check our pup in. Then we wait. After thirty minutes, a vet tech comes out and asks us if we have a vet. Yes. Then she asks whether we tried to get in? And I said yes, but our vet sent us here because they were full and it was 5 PM. She seemed annoyed and asked us for the name of our vet and left. She was also annoyed our pup wasn't a current client. Finally, we get a call another 30 minute later that begins, "You know this is an emergency hospital, right? For emergencies?" And I said yes, but my dog has been having diarrhea every thirty minutes for the past day after eating styrofoam and our vet said he needed to come in. She then goes "What do you want us to do about it?" I was shocked. I didn't know; I'm not a vet. She said all they would do is watch him, same thing as home, except charge us a lot of money to do it. Kept bringing it back to the money, which frankly, we didn't care about. We just wanted to make sure our puppy was okay. We had submitted a stool sample to our vet earlier that day, and she said all they would do is take a stool sample and charge us 3x the amount. Didn't seem to consider giving him fluids. Finally, I said forget it--we'll look elsewhere. She went "sorry, it's just we have actual emergencies and trying to save you from a huge bill." So thank you to this receptionist for saving us from not only a huge vet bill, but also for helping us decide what animal hospitals to NOT go to. There are plenty in the area and I'm happy to give my business elsewhere. read more

Dr.Choy and his medical staff along with front desk and after hrs team are the best thing ever happened for my golden baby. My 1st appoint with Dr.Choy lasted about 2 hrs, him explaining how lymphoma and treatment works. I decided to go with the treatment....he didn't set any false expectations rather gave the facts. I got to have my boy with me for an extra 6 months, treatment isn't cheap and isn't for everyone however the warm welcome received from drop off and pick up allowed me to feel safe about leaving my furball hours at a time while he received treatment. I recommend this practice and team. They are very knowledgable and the fact I could communicate with his oncologist after hrs via email was a bonus. My baby passed away in March and I just received a beautiful book from them with their notes in it. Thank you for being thoughtful, thank you for the 6 month miracle. A stage 5 lymphoma case doesn't leave much hope to imagination but we got lucky. Brody loved visiting the practice. He received so much love and care. read more

About a month ago I noticed that my cat Nicky stopped using her litter box. I called my regular vet and was told to take her to Emergency clinic BluePearl in Kirkland. So I did. Front desk people said that the wait will be 1 to 2 hours. I checked with them couple of times, and was told that triage had to take care of more serious cases first. By 10:00 PM everyone who arrived before and after me were taken care of. After 4+ hours of wait I demanded that they give me my cat back, as I was ready to leave. 5 minutes later they took me back and doctor told me that Nicky was dehydrated, and she was administered some fluids. Other than that, they couldn't determine what was wrong with her. I was told that she will need some expensive tests. It took doctor about 5 minutes to evaluate my cat and 3 minutes to talk to me. The "consultation" charge was $200.00. They were very slow to take care of my cat. However, they were very quick to take care of my $$. It is obvious that $$ is the first priority, not our pets. The next day I took my precious cat to a different clinic. After 2 hours of observation and one test doctor concluded that she was severely dehydrated and needed substantial amount of fluids. She was given fluids at the clinic, and they also showed me how to administer fluids at home. She was back to normal in 2 days. Very frustrated and unhappy with the "service" I received. Will not go back to this clinic and will advice everybody to avoid it. read more

My short review of SVS is "It depends." If your pet specifically needs the services of the SVS specialists, they are very skilled. But, be prepared to pay accordingly. Big bucks. For everything. All the time. We were pleased with the oncology care our dog received here, but... all told, it was well over $12K over 3-4 months that possibly got us an extra 3 months. For this particular dog, I think I would do the same thing again. I think. Maybe. Our dog had the temperament to tolerate chemo. I absolutely would *not* do this again for our other dog, who is equally loved, but less accommodating personality-wise. Cancer care sucks, for people or dogs, and paying exorbitant prices is zero fun on top of that, so consider very carefully. For garden-variety emergency care, stay far, far away from this place. Big bucks. For everything. All the time. Your dog might need simple rehydration, but they won't give you that option until after a slew of very expensive tests. Their equipment must have been paid for quite a few times over by bilking emergency cases who probably didn't have the option of going elsewhere. Their business model must please the owners immensely. Predatory jerks. Juat because you can charge these prices doesn't mean you should SVS. Maybe find your role models from 'All Creatures Great and Small', instead of Wall Street and the human insurance industry. read more

we brought in our cat with an open wound and after more than 3 hours nobody has even checked or triaged our pet. We saw every other patient go in front of us because they were deemed critical (which is fair) but nobody ever checked or even talked to us. i asked about our status and the answers were evasive. i get priorities for critical cases, but other dogs with similar injuries had more attention. Maybe they just prioritize dogs. Maybe it is just bad customer service. all in all, do not recommend it at all. read more

Late last night, my little basset hound had an allergic reaction to something (we still don't know what). While we were driving home from a nice run in the woods, her face and muzzle swelled up at an alarming rate. Lumps, bumps and hives started protruding from her fur right before our eyes. It was very scary, because we know that anaphylactic shock can swell up air passages or stop the heart quickly. We didn't know if we had seconds, minutes or hours to prevent complications. I knew about Seattle Veterinary Specialists because they were by our old office and I recalled some of the good reviews I had seen listed for them. I used a few precious seconds to google their info and called them as we headed towards their office. They immediately took our information over the phone so triage would be ready to work with our dog. We rushed in minutes later and they were indeed ready to whisk her back for treatment. It was a busy night, but it appeared that everyone's pets were being handled as efficiently as possible. None of the animals showed distress at being there. Even my (somewhat neurotic) basset hound seemed at ease in the building. When they brought her back out, she had even remarkably made friends with one of their techs! As worried pet parents, we found the office to be a calming, welcoming place. Reviewers who have noted that this place is better run than human ERs are spot on. The treatment we received was excellent and the charges were not overwhelming for a late-night call. There was one snafu with our paperwork as the new doc was learning the routine-- so you might want to watch your papers as they get passed around the office. It might save you some waiting time. (: At the end of the night, my doggie made herself at home in one of the waiting chairs. Her face was still swollen but she was sure to recover from her reaction. I won't remove stars for the paperwork snafu. All I care about is the health and comfort of my dog. If I ever had to do it again, with precious moments to spare for my beloved pets, I would not hesitate to use this hospital read more

Recently my cat was having serious problems that my local emergency vet said should be looked at, although they could not see him. We started with emergency vets in Tacoma and South King County all of whom told me that he should be seen, but were unable to see him. We finally talked to the Seattle Veterinary Specialists/Blue Pearl in Totem Lake who agreed to see him. They saw him as soon as we got there. Luckily, he was much improved after possible poisoning. Nikie the tech and Dr. Stephens were so kind to see him. Nikie could not have been nicer. The office and restrooms were absolutely spotless and the cleanest smelling vet's office I have ever been in. read more

We turned to Seattle Veterinary Specialists due to their experience in surgical orthopedics. Nemo was having recurring knee dislocation and needed surgery in order to regain his quality of life. After the first surgery, the graft became infected which wasn't detected and took weeks until it was caught. The second surgery was meant to clean the infection out completely. Instead of being performed by the qualified vet we had worked with and met, Seattle Veterinary Specialists had an intern/resident perform the surgical clean out. Needless to say, the third surgery was a limb removal which drastically changed his quality of life and not for the better. Seattle Veterinary did take responsibility, apologized, and comped the last surgery. I can't help but thinking how he would have had a better quality of life had the surgeon not been in a meeting and had actually been in the operating room. read more

Honestly, this review is long overdue. My first experience with SVS was in the mid 2000s when my first English Bulldog, Jumbo, whimpered in pain when I got home from work. I was convinced that he got something similar to "wry neck" from sleeping too long on an IKEA chair in a weird position. When I rushed him to emergency, I was referred to Dr. Sean Sanders for an MRI. I was thinking to myself that I can't afford a surgery anyway, why would I want an MRI? But the ER doc guilt-ed me into making an appointment with SVS. So, I brought Jumbo in to meet with Dr. Sanders. He was super nice and gave Jumbo a neuro exam and told me what I suspected. He said that there's no reason to get an MRI now because if he truly needed surgery, you would need another MRI right before surgery anyways, so don't bother for now. Instead, he prescribed some muscle relaxant and told us to come back if Jumbo didn't get any better. At this point, I felt both relief and guilty since I came in expecting to dish out more than $1K for an MRI, but is walking away with the charge for an office visit. On review of the x-ray, Jumbo did appear constipated because he couldn't "bear down" to go with his neck pain. So, with Dr. Sander's blessings, we let them perform an enema on Jumbo. So, three hours later, I get a call. "Your dog wouldn't poo, we are giving him a second enema." Thankfully, that did the trick and Jumbo was happier when we picked him up. Much to my surprise, not only did they only charge me for "one" instead of "two" enema, their service charge for the enema is much much less than the quote I got at the original ER place that referred us. I am thankful now that the first ER referred us to SVS. In fact, I thought SVS was so much better I will not be returning to the first ER. Fast forward to 2016. We brought our dog Cocoa in because she was shaking with discomfort and loss of appetite. She was quickly diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia and giardia, so, she stayed on respiratory watch. The folks at SVS were very professional. They actually gave us two estimates showing how much things should cost in the best case scenario, and the high end cost if things do not go smoothly. So, we prepaid the best case scenario and left Cocoa in their care with them telling us we can visit her anytime as long as we called ahead. So, later that night, we returned to tuck Cocoa in and see how she was doing. Cocoa was totally sleeping like a baby as the video I attached showed. The area where they kept her had a nice vibe to it. The nice ladies actually laid a blanket down on the floor so we could play with Cocoa as long as we liked before putting her back in the cage for the night. They did not rush us at all and really let us take our time to feel comfortable with everything that's happening. I can go on and on and on. In short, I would recommend SVS to anyone that seek care for their dog without any hesitation. P.S. I am editing the review because I forgot to mention that I actually got a refund when I picked Cocoa up! They didn't end up having to do as much as they thought they needed to do on the best case scenario, so they gave us money back! How awesome is that? read more

We had our golden doodle, Quincy, only two weeks before he ran up the stairs one night in April and badly broke his elbow joint in three places. Quincy was only 4 months old. We took him to an emergency vet in Redmond only to find out, yes, it was broken and would require surgery. We left with that clinic with a $800 bill and were told to call our vet the next morning to schedule the surgery. My vet reviewed the x-rays told me this surgery would require a board-certified surgeon because it was such a bad fracture (a Y fracture of the left distal humerus). The next three days consisted of surgical consultations at different clinics and, in a nutshell, a very dreary prognosis for Quincy. One board-certified surgeon in Seattle suggested either amputation or putting him down. He said Quincy would have bad arthritis and that with this break, there wasn't a good chance of it healing well, and most likely, it would end up needing to be amputated. ("This could very well end up being a $12,000 amputation," were his exact words.) Most surgeons were booked and wouldn't even see Quincy but stressed that it needed to be operated on immediately because he was so young and his bones were growing so fast. At long last, we landed at Seattle Veterinary Specialists in Kirkland. They saw Quincy through the emergency room. They viewed his x-rays and booked him overnight for a surgery the next day. Even though it was a bad break, Dr. Mark Engen felt confident that he could help and while he couldn't guarantee how things would end up, he didn't feel it would end in amputation. The surgery went well, and we followed the instructions for aftercare. I'm not going to lie; it was not easy (about six weeks of severe restriction and being on a leash to go outside). It was several weeks before he would put any weight on his leg again. Dr. Engen scheduled several follow up visits and answered calls and my questions promptly over the next few weeks. While attending one follow up visit, I talked to a man who was having his dog's second hip replacement surgery with Dr. Engen. He had done a lot of research and believed Dr. Engen to be the best surgeon in the state for this type of surgery. He also has done surgery (another hip replacement) for one of my groomer's dogs. She also had nothing but high praises for Dr. Engen. Fast forward to today (now August), Quincy runs around like any other dog, chasing bunnies and squirrels in the yard. He ran with us on the beach last month in Oregon. He does not even have a limp. Dr. Engen is a hero in my eyes. I would highly recommend him for any orthopedic surgery for your pet! What happened to our dog was such an unfortunate accident, and an expensive one, but thankfully it's a story with a happy ending. I'm hoping this review helps any readers that may end up in a situation like ours. Dr. Mark Engen is a person you can trust with your most precious companion! read more

Such a great place with wholesome doctors and staff. Almost a month ago, my yorkie had a sudden heart attack and this place was the closest emergency vet I was able to get to (SVS is not the usual vet place I go to). Unfortunately, my dog was not able to make it before we even got there. But even so, my mom and I were treated with such hospitality, and the veterinarians were just such a great support. I have even received hand written letters from them about my loss, which I thought was SO sweet (especially because before this incident I have never gone to this place). Thank you to all the staff and doctors for grieving with me and helping me and my mom get through such a painful event. read more

We had a tough situation with a pair of cats who both took a turn for the worse late on a Saturday and needed to be put down. They went out of their way to fit us in immediately and handled both of them with the utmost of care and compassion. While we were prepared for a pretty large bill due to the timing and 2 cats they only charged is for one visit and the drugs required saving us hundreds of dollars.
