We got to use SHPR when we got a groupon for a two night stay. We took a tour of the place and ended up using it for our dog, Buster, to stay at when we moved. BTW it is much easier to move when your dog is staying elsewhere! They have a great doggie day-care set up, outdoor and indoor facilities. They really pay attention to detail. All of the staff were nice and seemed to really love animals. We got to see the Saint Bernard's that they house and care for as a rescue facility. They are available for adoption, but I can't wrap my head around having a dog that big! When we got Buster back from SHPR he was as happy and healthy as when he went in. We would use them again if they were closer to us, and a little less costly. read more

My boyfriend and I had a 5 day trip to go on with our family and had no one to watch our pups. We searched pet resorts and were just about to go to another place closer to home. We just happened to drive by this place on a random trip up north and we saw this place and just googled and checked it out. We then went down for a tour and didn't call first but just took a chance. The staff dropped everything and took so much time with us to show us the ins and outs. We signed Ruby and Bruno up that day. They gave us a coupon for a free night. We brought them in and they swiftly took the pups from us and even had a quick kiss. I think that's better because I was emotional. Silly I know. They sent me pictures of my babies and even introduced them to new activities. They went swimming and had lots of snuggle time. I was shocked Bruno jumped in the water. Our flight got delayed and we had to call frantically to see if one more night was ok. They were able to stay in their "petite suite" for one more night no problem. I packed plenty of food but the dogs didn't eat as much as they usually do so they asked me if it was ok to entice them with fresh chicken and rice and warm water on their food. So awesome. They were so caring and I know the babies had a nice stay. Ps. Doggy daycare is available too and that looks so fun!!! They have 7 different yards to run in!!! read more

They have a waterpark for mans best friend, exercise equipment.. A small bowser shop for the couture pup. The staff is nice, loves dogs, & knowledgable. You will need to have current shots, & an assessment to be sure your dog isn't the one man, one dog type.. Aka anti-social. They will gladly give you a tour.. Besides doggie daycare, there are pet suites with private patios, webcams & even plasma tvs! Seriously, this place is a resort.. A five star for the furry:-) read more

I have a Rottweiler mix that is a rescue, she was abused and as a result is terrified of new people. Second Home didn't let that scare them away, they took the time to get to know and love Libby. They care for her like she's one of their own, I know that if I leave Libby in their hands she will receive the same level of love and care as she does from me at home. The owners, Roger and Cheryl, are truly wonderful people whose love and compassion for ALL animals is apparent; they personally took time with Libby to get her acclimated to the new environment. The resort manager, Jordan, was incredibly kind and accommodating, she made me so comfortable leaving Libby. She even personally gave me updates throughout Libby's stay because she knew how nervous I was leaving my little girl, she truly went above and beyond. Even though I was calling daily for updates the entire staff was helpful and understanding. As for the facility, it is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen and it is meticulously cared for! The water park is awesome and the fact that they have an option for an indoor/outdoor suite is wonderful because my dog can't get enough of the patio! My dog Rocco goes crazy if we even drive by Second Home. He absolutely loves going there. I sometimes feel bad, because he looks sad when I get there to pick him up. The staff is great, and they all seem to know him by name when he arrives. I have used Second Home for boarding and for daycare. I recommend both. My dog is extremely hyperactive, and after a day of playing at daycare he comes home and curls up and sleeps for hours. To me that is worth the price of daycare. The first time I used boarding there, I had a geriatric dog. They were so great with her too. I have used the big box pet boarding and daycare before, and I was shocked to learn that the brand named store kept the dogs inside the entire day. I know with Second Home that they get to go outside to play, and they even get to play in the dog water park. They are supervised at all times. My only suggestion to Second Home would be to expand their hours. On weekdays they close at 6PM. This can be a hardship for me since I drive from work in Chandler. Their weekend hours are limited, so if I plan on doing a weekend trip I have to make sure I am back on Sunday between 11AM and 2PM to pick up my dog. read more

Very disappointed in this facility. Called to board our cat for a week and made reservation. The gentleman said that they required all vaccinations prior to visit. Took kitty to vet for all vaccines at over $250 expense. Sent paperwork to this Second Home. They called to say that kitty needed complete vaccinations prior to boarding; since he only had his initial ones (and other one was not scheduled until after our return), they would not allow him to stay! With no other options, we had to cancel our entire travel plans! Lost airline fees! Their mistake was in not telling us that our cat needed full vaccinations prior to boarding. We know it is for the safety of all pets there but, if they would have told us, we could have made other arrangements. We will not board our cat at this place ever! Beware of rules! read more

LOVED IT We boarded our Pitbull mix and Chihuahua here. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We even called and asked if they could send us some pictures of our dogs and they texted it to us! We boarded our dogs here for almost a week, quite a scary experience since it was our first time being away from them, but we had piece of mind after touring the facilities and meeting some of their staff. The kennels and outside were very clean and well taken care of. The prices are really reasonable for what you get, but ultimately you really cannot put a price on piece of mind that your 'furry members of the family' are being well taken care of, while you're away. I will defiantly go here next time we need to board our dogs. PITBULLS We had to call 4 different boarding places before we finally found one that would take pitbulls. Even PetSmart wouldn't allow us to keep our Pitbull and Chihuahua in the same cage. Here they allowed them to stay together at all times, play outside together and when I walked in I didn't sense the "dangerous Pitbull stay away" stigma I feel at most other places. Every "pet resort" claims to really care about your pets but, as far as I can tell, this is the only one in the Phoenix metro area to offer the accommodation/service options that ensure your pet is truly cared for and comfortable. Specifically, this is the only kennel I'm aware of that offers indoor/outdoor suites (although the family-sized suites almost always booked - please, please figure out a way to offer more large indoor/outdoor suites!) and also the only one that, if you're unable to book an indoor/outdoor suite, offers the option of a nighttime potty break. I really appreciate that because it helps to keep my dogs on roughly the same routine as they have at home, which I think makes boarding a little less disruptive for them. In addition to the thoughtful accommodations and service offerings, Second Home also seems to be above-average in terms of cleanliness and staff attentiveness. My dogs have only stayed a few times, but so far I'm very pleased. read more

After moving to Gilbert, AZ, in 2008, we searched in our area as well as the Phoenix / Scottsdale areas for a great, high quality pet hotel for our two Labradors. Our Labradors are part of our family and we want only the very best for them. We are so thankfully that we found Second Home Pet Resort and love everything that it offers. Our Labradors have stayed at Second Home Pet Resort for 6 vacations. One trip was for over 10 nights, and the rest averaged about 5 nights. Our dogs share the Pavilion Suite with the indoor / outdoor space and in addition to this, we sign them up for either the water park or half-a-day of outdoor play. Both our dogs have always come home happy and healthy! Because our Labradors are part of our family, I have been very picky about the quality of the hotel, the professionalism of the staff and how our pets feel / behave when they return home from vacation. My son has been taking his two french bull dogs to Second Home Pet Resort now for I think it's almost been two years. I myself have dropped them and picked both Harvey and Junior up when they couldn't do it and every time, they have come back well balanced and happy to see us. I also know MANY PEOPLE in the rescue community who use Second Home Pet Resort when they have to find a boarding facility. When your peers are using a facility to board their animals that says something. No one leaves their animals here because the woman who runs Second Home happens to be one of the best in the business. They also leave them at Second Home because we all know they are going to get the best of care and be well taken care of. That is why. With all the negative things you hear about when it boarding your animals, neglect is the last thing you have to worry about with this place. When you leave town, you want to be stress free when it comes to your animals and not have to worry. I won't take my dog anywhere else when I go out of town; Second Home has been amazing. My dog Luna is a rescue and has some behavioral issues due to her significant fear of strange people & dogs. The staff here is amazing with her though, and I even notice that she's not as sensitive to her usual triggers after I pick her up. Luna has stayed at the resort a few times now, enough that the staff recognizes us and greet us by name. Hands down the best!!. I have a black lab pup she's only a year and a half old, and I desperately needed to find a dog boarding facility for a last minute trip. I was referred to second home pet by my soon to be mother in law, as she has taken her dog here before. I live in litchfield park so this location is quite a drive for me, but with that said I will never board my dog any where else!. I called second home pet just 2 days prior to super bowl Sunday to see if they had any availability. Luckily they did! I drove out and was greeted immediately by a very welcoming staff!. I told them we spoke on the phone about my lab possibly being boarded. They gave me a full tour of the grounds and ALL the rooms they offer and how much each of them are. They also showed me the kitchen, and the day care facility. Each of them very clean and very nice!. While this place is pricey I want my girl to be treated by the best. I paid for extra play time and swimming time (because she's a lab need I say more) which for 3 days was 15$ extra per day. And extra cuddle time was 9$ per day. On top of the room charge which was around 60$ (you can get rooms for as low as 45$ which are just as nice!) I chose a room that faces the swimming area that offered a patio attached to her room. For reference she's about 60 lbs a good medium sized lab. I wanted her to be safe, comfortable and well looked after. Cody one of the staff members took extra measures to send me videos and photos via txt to ease my worry. As it was the first time she was being boarded. I will definitely recommend second home pet resort to any one looking to board their pet here. The staff is wonderful, the resort is clean and safe, I feel confident leaving my girl in their care. (Side note for cat owners out there, I have 2 cats as well. They offer a few very spacious cozy clean rooms for your cat to be well looked after.) All I can say is looking online doesn't do this place justice when you step foot inside SHPR you will be instantly put at ease that every one here will do their best for you and your pet. read more

I recently boarded my cat here for the first time. Not only were the staff great and professional at check-in, but they kept track of how she was eating and called because she wasn't eating enough for the first couple days. They were accommodating to my requests that they try some other foods, then wean her back onto her usual food (medical diet). They were clearly on top of things and concerned for my cat's well-being. Daisy comes here for baths and grooming on a regular basis! She always looks fantastic after. They really do a great job and always do everything extra I ask for- ear cleaning, teeth brushing or bows in her hair! I would definitely recommend for grooming ! Boarded my 2 dog for a weekend. When I drooped them off I felt a little rushed by the staff when I was asking them questions. They were by no mean rude, just didn't seem like they care too much. When my boyfriend picked them up he told me that our pom-yorkie shed a lot (probably due to stress). They were frantic to leave! The next few days, our poodle experienced a bad case of diarrhea which was so bad that he poo in his crate! On top of that he got a bad ear infection! If the pet resort allow dogs to play in the water then they should've dry the dogs' ears. Wet ears (esp on floppy eared dogs) leads to ear infection. It was very irresponsible. Needless to say, we won't be coming back. read more

Wow after reading a lot of these reviews I definitely will not be returning with my 2 fur babies. I find it very disrespectful and unprofessional the way staff replied and downplayed Stephen's review below.. seriously?? If that had been my dog I would have been furious. There are no excuses for that. Not only that but there are many other incidents that have happened here that are far from ok. I took my 2 kids here last year while out of town on vacation.. when I dropped them off a staff member was yanking on the rope they put around my dogs neck to take them back. I did not like that one bit. It made me feel uneasy leaving them there as staff didn't show too much compassion or patients. I had left instruction on feeding them and I had also left a bag of nubs dental chews with exactly enough for both dogs to have one in the am and one in the pm for everyday during their stay. When I picked my 2 dogs up a week later they handed me back the bag of nubs chew bones with about 3 less than I had given them. Clearly they didn't follow my instructions that I had wrote on the bag AND verbally told them. That wasn't a big deal but just made me think if they cant follow instructions on something that simple then they don't need to be taking care of my 2 fur kids. My dogs are my children and I expect the utmost exceptional care and that clearly is not at Second Home Pet Resort. read more

My deaf dog has had a past history of fear aggression, so I was looking for a facility that was equipped with caring staff who could help her and were properly trained, if she reacted in negative way. In fact, I drove all the way from Las Vegas because it was her first time staying in a new boarding facility I needn't have worried. She had a blast, and so did my other pup! The staff and management here were both friendly and loving, and they sent me pictures and updates of how my pets were doing. The facilities are wonderful, too, and I only wish that Second Home was closer to Vegas! :) Maybe if we ever vacation in Phoenix, I'll bring them back for another pet-vacation! read more

POOR policies. I booked a boarding reservation for my dog 2 months ago for Memorial Weekend. At the time, they took a $90.- deposit. I had to cancel over 1 week due to health reasons before the reservation took place. They held the $90.00 and told me that it was credit for future business dealings with them. Today I called and was told that they were filled up for the holiday weekend. I knew that they would fill my reservation but do NOT like their policies. BEWARE- don't play their game. My eight (8) dogs (yes I said 8) stayed at Second Home Pet Resort recently and I have to say it was THE best pet resort experience I've ever had! The facility is new, modern, clean, very upscale and the prices are very competitive offering discounts for multiple pets. It was way cheaper than having an in home pet sitter and I had peace of mind knowing that they were safe at all times. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly and even was able to handle my dogs with special needs (undersocialized dog and a dog that required daily medicine). I left a terrier mix at second home while traveling over the Memorial day holiday. I went in person to check out the resort prior to leaving my pet and the facility was beautiful. I thought this was the ideal place to leave my pet. At first glance upon my return I thought this was a great boarding my pet appeared happy until we got to the parking lot. My dogs behind was loaded with poop. It appeared he had a hard time eliminating and the poop did not drop to the ground. Instead the dog was left in what appeared to be days with this poop on his behind. I was mortified. I returned with my dog and it took one of the kennel workers about 30-45 minutes to get the poop cleaned off. The entire time the worker said the dog should have received a bath (at my expense of course) and this problem would have been found. Next I asked that my dog NOT be allowed to play with other dogs. Well it appears that my request was ignored because my dog came home sick, sneezing, coughing and lethargic. Last but not least, something happend to my dogs paw while in their care. He had some sort of trauma. When we got home, the nail on his back paw was bleeding. Yes...bleeding. The Vet stated the nail was so tramatized that it had to be removed. My poor pup was sick with a cold, behind full of poop and trauma to his nail. After my one and only visit to this resort, I ended up with a vet bill for several hundred dollars, and a sick pet on four different medications who now must walk in a hicking boot until his nail heals in 2 months. BOTTOM line....if you love your pet...do not take your pet to this place. They are obviously NOT paying attention to our precious little animals. I will never set foot in this place again. read more

I had to board my 2 cats, Yoshi and Louie, for the weekend and was so lucky to find Second Home Pet Resort before I left. I only had about a week to plan for their boarding and everyone who I spoke to was so friendly and helpful when I called multiple times. When I took my cats in they were put in their area on their own time, meaning they weren't ripped out of their carriers and thrown into their cage. I was so grateful that the staff was so understanding that it was hard for me to leave them there since this is the first time I had to board them. They allowed me to pet them and say goodbye. I was also able to view their area on the webcam and was always happy to see when they were let out to roam around and when they were being fed. When we picked up Yoshi and Louie we were able to say hi to them before putting them in their carrier. The staff member showed me the paperwork they kept on file of when they would feed them, what they would feed them, when they were let out, and when they would use/clean their litter box. It's hard to find good reviews on a place to board cats since it's not very common, but we will definitely be returning in the future if need be. The key is to ask for anyone available and they want to schedule you with whoever you had the previous appointment. Friendly and informative staff; pass on the dog food. I took a tour of the place a few days before placing my dog Jax here. I was told that I would get a call notifying me if he was able to do day care as I signed him up for 3 1/2 days of day care. No calls received while I was on vacation. I assumed he did ok. When I picked him up the paper work was in order and he looked like he was bathed, however he peed and it was not a tinkle, it was a stream, so not sure how long since they had last taken him out. Thinking this was a slam dunk trip, I had taken him out a couple times before going to bed. His bowel movements were discolored. Then in the morning a nasty smelling surprise awoke my eyes. There was poo all over the kennel. It looked like he literally emptied his entire intestines. Not a pleasant surprise. It took over an hour of bathing him and disinfecting the kennel to get it back to normal as well as half a tree of paper towels. Within two days, I had him back to normal like a German freight train. So I question if they had taken him out at similar routine times each day or what. He's not had this accident in months so it leads me to believe it was either the food or lack of routine of taking him out at regular disciplined times, ie 8am morning 1pm afternoon 8pm nightly. I would give them another shot, but I definitely would be taking his food from home. read more

Second home pet resort is A+ and is truly my dog second home. My dog gets so excited to go there and hangs her head out the window just waiting till we arrive. All the employees know her name and play with her throughout the day. She is always clean and well cared for. So if you want your dog to be taken care of and loved this is where you would go there is no question about it. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable and know my dogs name and even take pictures and videos of her to show me. I am so grateful to have such a reputable and professional doggy daycare, boarding, and grooming center that my dog can go to and I know she having fun while I'm working. Second Home is the best!! We travel a lot and they are the only people I trust with our furry babies!! Our dogs love it so much that they don't even notice when I leave anymore. We recently started getting them groomed here as well and they did a fantastic job. Our rescue dog who hates groomers actually let the groomer give him a full haircut--YAY!! I have been using this place ever since I found it 2 years ago! My dogs are my children and I can say that this place is truly a home away from home. Not a "boarding"place at all! You can reserve an indoor/outdoor room and they have great prices, especially for multiple pets (I have 3)! My husband and I just moved here this year. We have some trips planned in the future, so I started researching doggy daycares. After researching their website, I was quite impressed. I then read the comments on Yelp, good and bad. I was really taken back by the fact that they do not allow Pit mixes. My husband and I adopted/rescued our babies this year. They are both, just over 1 year and they would not hurt a fly! They have also never had an issue playing with large groups of dogs, they actually love it. I went ahead and called them to possibly set up an appointment and to discuss what I had read. She said, "Oh no, we do allow boarding, but they are not allowed to play outside with the other dogs. It's a liability with the other dogs and makes the other dog owners nervous." I was absolutely heartbroken. My dogs were discriminated because of what they look like. She offered that I could speak with the manager, but I declined. There was nothing else to discuss. read more
