I had never placed my cats in a boarding facility before and was nervous, scared, and anxious. I am a recent transplant to Arizona and didn't know anyone who used a boarding facility for cats. Most boarding facilities were geared for dogs. During an online search, I came across Second Home Pet Resort. I read through all the cat information and decided to place a call. I appreciated the fact that the cats and dogs are in separate wings of the building and that there is a staff member onsite overnight. Second Home Pet Resort also kept me updated if my cats had any problems and they were able to talk me through solutions. I also would call and staff members filled me in on my cats stay. Even though they are an hour away from my home, I feel comfortable bringing my cats there and I am happy with the care my cats receive when they are not in their home. I recently took my 3-year-old Husky mix Shadow to Second Home for a bath, brush and nail trim. Shadow had been boarded at Second Home a couple of times, but this was the first time I used them for grooming. I was very pleased with the job done by Arisa. Shadow had been shedding a lot, and when she came home she was no longer shedding, and her fur was really soft and shiny! I paid a bit more than I have for dog baths at other places, but I think it was worth it for the excellent job. read more

They are AWESOME!! My dog Siren is terrified of thunder and fireworks, so we board her when we need to go out of town during monsoon season. They board both Siren and her brother Arrow together in one room (2 large huskies), are very kind and compassionate towards them-especially Siren with her anxiety. They give them plenty of exercise and attention, and were able to switch their food to chicken and rice when they were being snobby about the wet food they offered. They also were able to groom them for us before we picked them out up and they looked BEAUTIFUL!! I absolutely recommend them, and would not take our fur babies anywhere else! We left our dogs here for a week due to traveling. This was the first time they've been away from home. They were terrified, but Second Home was so professional that they placed them in a special place together and they had staff that worked with them to socialize them and get them to relax and enjoy themselves which they did. If I could give this place no stars I would. My family took our beautiful, professionally trained lab to this place to be interviewed for doggy day camp. Our family had put down our other beloved lab last year and our dog has been lonely ever since. To help boost his mood and ensure he is being loved on while we are at work, we wanted to try out a doggy day camp. Our dog was in the "interview" for less than 5 minutes before they pulled him and told us that he was "TOO HYPER" and "GOT TOO EXCITED" with the other dogs. Mind you, our dog has stayed over night here before multiple times and they have never said this till now. My family and I have always had labs not once has anyone ever said this to us at a boarding facility. Our dog of course was excited to see other dogs, what dog wouldn't be, he doesn't growl or bite, he just wants to play with dogs and be loved on. It's sad that this facility that says they are great with dogs are not willing to be patient but instead rather be lazy and take dogs that require minimal work so they can do other things more important than engage with our dog. I hope Second Home Pet Resort takes this review and learns from our discouraging experience and tries to do better the next time a "hyper" dog comes in for an interview and doesn't turn them away because they don't have the patience or engery to work with them. read more

This is one of the few places I could find that allows for cat boarding. They do a fantastic job, and I'm glad they are around. The staff is always friendly and I feel my cat is taken well care of (especially since he has some special needs). I wish they had a location in the West Valley (since it is a bit of a drive me), but they are worth it. read more

We board our dog at second home and they are extremely accommodating. They have an evaluation to check if a dog has the temperament to participate in daycare (which makes me feel very comfortable leaving him for the day). He initially failed the eval because he was freaked out about being in a new place, but they were willing to test him again after he was used to the facility and he passed. He gets plenty of exercise in daycare and always comes home tired. Boarding and daycare are both reasonably priced and offer good flexibility (although the weekend hours are not particularly conducive to pick up later in the day). Nice people, but don't believe for a second that they'll do exactly what they say that they will. I brought my dog's favorite treats and her favorite toy with me when I brought my dog. The woman to whom I spoke both on the phone snd in person told me that my dog would get her treats. When I picked up my dog four days later, the bag had the same number of treats that it had when I dropped off my dog. Considering that I paid extra for daily "cuddle time", one thinks they could have given my dog her treats at that time. read more

I liked that they allowed me to tour the facility, see the kitty condos and activities, and were reasonably priced! I trusted my 2 older labs with these guys over the Easter weekend . I loved the fact that you could check on them via camera. I could see how friendly and loving the staff were with them . I've used Second Home two or three times when boarding my cats. It has always been a good experience, so when I arranged to bring in my dog for their daycare program I was no less than shocked to learn that they do not accept pit bull mixes because "other dog owners may not be too happy to see their dogs playing with a pit bull". There was no mention of this unofficial policy when I called a week earlier to find out what requirements I had to prepare for to get my pup ready for her visit. I called my veterinarian for advice. He was willing to attest in writing to Daisy's gentle temperament and multiple breed mix of dalmation, bulldog, terrier and pit bull, however he suggested I find another place to take my girl. He told me that, unfortunately, these restrictions exist out of ignorance and that Daisy was better off being cared for by a professional facility that would provide a fair evaluation and did not already have a discriminitory precident in place. I don't understand how any animal care facility can perpetuate the myth that an entire breed is prone to aggression by nature. Daisy lived the first two years of her life on the street in downtown Phoenix near an elementary school where children taunted her without incident. She timidly took her first car ride to the veterinarian on the day I rescued her. She received professional one-on-one socialization training from a pet behaviour specialist in our home. She quickly became a favorite at our local dog park and regularly mingles with breeds of all sizes and temperaments. She stays with my sister when I'm out of town where she plays, sleeps and eats with her tiny dog cousins. She lets my cats boss her around the house. I believe there is a better solution than banning my dog from the Second Home daycare program. At best this is disappointing. read more

I needed to board my furbabies while I traveled out the country. My husband and I boarded our 2 kiddos Hershey (German Sheppard mix) and Riley (American Staffordshire terrier). I dropped them off on a Friday on dropped off they put the little rope around their necks like they do at the pound to escort them. I explained to the guy that Hershey gets nervous about it due to her previous placement, they did it anyways. They are a little pricey but honestly it us well worth it. They have 24hr staffing, A/C and heater units. They have a beautiful pool area an cuddle time. They offer various of services. When my kiddo Riley came home I noticed that he had scars on his paws and Hershey had major hair loss. The woman told me thay she was going to communicate with me throughout the time of the kiddos visit. I didn't hear from them until I emailed asking her until the last few days. They moved my kiddos to another sweet which defiantly did not approve of and did not understand why they moved them without my approval. They said Riley was aggressive and protective towards his sister and didn't want anyone near her which he had never been aggressive towards anyone unless he feels or seen then hurt her. The place is beautiful and the staff is awesome. Just don't get robbed because they don't have too much sympathy. I'm not sure if we would bring them back. read more

Being a 'dog-mom' is completely new to me so I honestly wasn't sure what to expect when bringing my 1-1/2 year old rescue lab retriever Oliver to Second Home Pet Resort. I am SO incredibly grateful to them. We had to board Oliver for about 10 days last October. He was so very well taken care of during that time including the cuddle sessions! And I truly appreciate the staff being so understanding and reassuring to me as I navigate my way through this! We've utilized their grooming services as well which are amazing!!! 8/30/17 Update: I am learning that this pet boarding facility is not regulated by the state nor is inspected for handling. That needs to change. I have no idea if my dogs were "boarded" in their paid separate rooms or if they put them into rooms with other dogs. I was not allowed to go to "back" where my dog was placed. My biggest concern was how unorganized they were upon pickup with advance notice and how they lost all of their labeled stuff including collars as well as most of the prepackaged food I supplied and labeled given back to me untouched. All with no explanation. Not to mention that both dogs became violently ill. Warning! I would give it a 0 but I cannot. This was my first stay at this facility. First of all, It is extremely expensive. My experience with this place to the tune of $978 to board two dogs for seven days was ridiculously contradictory to the service we received. In fact, it was astonishing. Both of our dogs became seriously ill within 24 hours of picking them up. They were healthy and fine when we dropped them off. The service was horrific. They lost our pets stuff and seemed to be totally unorganized when we arrived to pick them up. Not something I would expect from a premium place with a premium price. To make matters worse MY DOG DIED 14 DAYS LATER. BOTH OF OUR DOGS CAME HOME WITH SEVERE KENNEL COUGH WITH VOMITING AND DIARRHEA WITHIN 24 HOURS OF PICKING THEM BOTH UP. MY STORY: We are responsible pet owners with all valid shots, documentation, and clean, healthy pets. We did what we were told and provided food separated, bedding that was labeled, and instructions which were explicit. When we dropped them both off, I was a little concerned (like another review on here) the man behind the desk was Rushing us to just drop off the stuff and pay. He paid no attention to details, wasn't really interested, and off went our dogs with a "handler" who had the personality of a wet dishcloth. My fiancé has used this place twice and swears by it. I felt it was way overpriced and that the fees were more for the environment, not the service. The facility is beautiful and appears clean, however, we were not permitted to go in the back where our dogs would be boarded which was a caution flag to me but it was too late our flight was leaving. We came back to total chaos from this place. The dogs were extremely thirsty, nervous, and couldn't wait to leave. We chalked up to anxiety over being left behind. Their belongings were lost. I had All of their belongings that were meticulously labeled for each dog. They lost their collars and leashes, their bedding and blankets were mixed up with dogs stuff, their food bowls were lost. HOW can this happen if they were supposed to be labeled and we paid for separate rooms? The answer I got was "we board a lot of dogs here". NO kidding. You have one job and you failed. MISERABLY. It took two trips to get our correct stuff back. NOT ACCEPTABLE AT ALL. The handler that we were directed to talk to each time had no idea where "the stuff" was but that they would find it.The manager appeared to be glued to his monitor, friendly, but unresponsive to helping. He appeared more like he was cavalier to the issue. Oh well, we lost your stuff, we'll find it.... Chaos. Unorganized. Sloppy. Poor Service. NO EXCUSE. We boarded our dogs from August 1 to August 9. On Friday, August 11 my dog became very ill. We took her to our Vet who examined my dog thoroughly. She was coughing and sneezing a lot but still active at the time. She was diagnosed with severe Kennel Cough and prescribed a two-week dosage of antibiotics. Our second dog became very ill on Saturday, August 12 and was vomiting with diarrhea. She was placed on a higher dose of antibiotics as she had symptoms worse than my dog. Both seemed to respond well and were becoming normal again. They were eating well, playing, and seemed to be doing okay. My dogs follow up appointment was for today, August 24 at 3:00 pm. I even canceled her appointment yesterday because she seemed to be fine. Instead, I'm burying her. And, we cannot wrap our heads around what just happened. It's all too surreal. read more

We recently boarded our senior (15, 14 and 12) Bichons at Second Home. I was worried about them since the 2 oldest have very limited sight and hearing. They originally were in a Patio Suite, but on the second evening Destiny called me to say that they seemed stressed, and suggested moving them to a quieter TLC Suite. The next morning she called again to let me know that they were doing better in the quieter area. We were so impressed with how she was looking out for our boys, and using her knowledge to suggest what might be best for them. I left my three dogs here over the new year holiday. They took great care of all three dogs. However, I want to make a point to talk about how they treated one of them in particular. We have an in-tact, male, English Bulldog. He is so sweet and loving. He is also 70lbs and completely unaware of his size. He has leash and separation anxiety. We have had issues with other facilities separating him and flat out ignoring him due to him being a bull in a China shop. Not Second Home. They gave him space to calm down and feel safe. They made sure he felt safe and loved. They had him sleeping in their laps. Literally. We still need to work with our boy to make sure he's on his best behavior for the next time he stays there. Still, knowing that he isn't going to be neglected due to his size and hyper activity, but he'll be loved and cared for in our absence is priceless. They even took the time to assure me that he was loved and welcomed there. I will never take my dogs anywhere else. Ever. (He also has bad skin allergies that have required an emergency vet appointment after a stay at day care in the past. I have been using SHPR for approximately three years to board my two 50-55 lb dogs. I have never had an issue with them until now. Although their prices have steadily increased over the years and most things require additional fees, I have never complained, until now; however, I have questioned whether this place is worth the money that I have spent with them, which is probably well over a couple thousand dollars over the last few years. Here is my story: My two dogs have always used the Pavilion Patio Suite together. I love that they are able to have out door space, especially when they are kenneled 24x7. Last time we boarded, they were out of the Pavilion Patio Suite, so we took an Elite Patio Suite. This time when I called to book 6 nights, I was told that my dogs were too large to share the Pavilion Patio Suite and MUST be in at least an Elite Suite. I have never had this issue before. I was told that such things must be approved by management and a day later I received a call that management had declined my request, as the dogs would be more comfortable in the Elite Suite. I would not have such an issue with this, except that I really feel this is a money issue. The the Elite Suite is actually only 7'X7', while the Patio Pavilion Suite is 2 spaces of 4 1/2'x7', equaling more space than the Elite Suite. The Elite Suite is even slightly cheaper; however, I made it clear that I really want the outdoor space, therefore, my only option is the Elite Patio Suite, which is $15 more per night ($105 more for my entire trip). Additionally, the website states that the Pavilion Patio Suite is good for dogs up to 100 lbs and my dogs are either at 100 lbs or just over by 5-10 lbs (combined). I think it is completely silly that they are so wrapped up in 5-10 lbs (max) of a difference and they are willing to lose a good customer. I will state that I feel that ultimately, my issues lie with management, not the individuals who are in non-managment roles. I feel that management is loosing a good customer over a silly issue, and have used their employees to relay a message that really should have come from management, but I am holding firm and have found another place to board my dogs. Additionally, please don't state that you feel this is in the best interest of my dogs, when really this really seems to be about how to get more money out of the customer. I have since canceled my reservation and found a new place which will not only be saving me $200, but also allows my dogs to participate in open play all day, rather than being cooped up in a small room/kennel. Sure my new place doesn't have flat screen TV's that play Animal Planet, but it provides my dogs with all the necessities and a chance to meet and play with other doggie friends without additional costs. read more

Needed to board my two-year-old cat for 4 nights/5 days. She was current on her vaccines except for a rabies shot. The first pet hotel I tried required that she have a rabies shot 48 hours prior to her stay and we didn't have enough time to do that. I was thrilled that Second Home didn't require a rabies shot for cats. This was the first time I had taken her to be boarded as she was a new cat that I had only had for a few weeks. I reserved the four-tier cat condo $34/ night. It includes food (dry and/or wet) and access to a play area twice a day for one cat at a time. For an additional $8 a day I paid for the optional 30-minutes play and petting time with an attendant. Note: There is also a less expensive option of a two-level condo for $20 a night that also includes access twice a day to the play area. Our cat was exploring the four level enclosed condo right away. We brought her bed and a scratching post but there was no need to bring anything additional as the condo has beds. They have toys so we didn't bring ours so that we wouldn't lose our toys. They stored our cat carrier right above her condo. Our cat seemed to do very well and her personality is right back to normal the next day after picking her up. One extra touch we would've really enjoyed was for the attendant to text us a picture of her playing with them each day during the $8 session. Also a webcam would be great so we could see what she was doing at any time. We had to pick her up by 6 pm or pay a late pick-up fee. That made for a rushed drive trip back from Vegas, but we made it in the nick of time. Overall it was a great experience and our cat is happy. read more

We've boarded our 3 dogs here on 3 different occasions. I do like that the kennels have an outdoor area for the pets so they get some fresh air, and outside noise. This is one of the most expensive boarding facilities in the city. Because of that, I have high expectations. My expectations are proportionate with the cost. 2 of the 3 times I boarded my pets I made observations about the business practices that make me feel Second Home should do better. 1. The website boasts in all caps "canine guests are taken outside FOUR times a day" as opposed to their competitors 2x a day. Now what I discovered is that this is only true if your dog arrives by a certain time of day, early AM. I understand dogs are taken out in shifts, but if the FOUR TIMES a day rule isn't FACTUAL then REMOVE IT from the website. 2. My dogs come home very thirsty. Now I did see them knock their water over once when I went to check out the kennel, so I'm not sure what's going on, but it was definitely noted that each time they come home they drink a ton of water. 3. The first time we boarded the dogs, we were allowed to go into the kennel "set up their toys and blankie" the way we liked. Our toys and bags were also photographed so we could verify that all our belongings came back. I guess this was all for show because the next 2x this wasn't an option we were given. On this last visit the dogs boarded for 72 hours. Before we left for 2nd Home one of the dogs knocked her thick rope toy into our pool. I put the toy into a ziplock baggie wet and put it with 6 or so other toys in a canvas bag. Now when I received the dog toys back 72 hours later, the rope toy was still wet and the bag and other cloth toys smelled like mildew. All I can assume is that none of the toys came out of that bag during the dogs stay. I'm willing to accept that this assumption could be wrong, but I have no way to prove this. 4. I asked for text updates and also mentioned to the staff that this should be an option in the checklist of services for guests. I was told it's not currently on the list, but certainly they could text photos. They took my cell number and on the last day of the dog's stay I received a video and photos. While these were very welcome, it was as though someone remembered to do their homework at the last minute. Are these things oversights? I understand mistakes can be made, but what portion of my money can be prorated and returned to me if 100% of the services promised are not performed? The last issue I had was with customer service of the front desk staff. My mistake, I was not aware that the facility closes at 2PM on the weekends. Of course weekends are the only days I return from my trips to pick up the dogs. On both occasions when I called to let the staff know we would possibly not make pickup before closing the staff in their robotic state was only focused on my method of payment. Both times the phone conversations went like this: Staff: "Hello Second Home." Me: " Our dogs are there, I don't think we're going to make it on time before you close, what do we do?" Staff: "Last name? Okay I see your credit card on file ends in xxxx, okay to charge ____ amount to the card?" Me: "I was going to pay with another method." Staff: "Okay well our office does close at 6 so we need to close out before then." Me: "Okay there's a chance we'll get there before close." Staff: "Well do we have your permission to charge the card on file?" Me: "I don't seem to have a choice, but HOW DO I GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU TO GET MY DOGS if I'm late?" Both times the staff finally focused on my question, forcibly, Yes I was frustrated. When I pay for premium service and get Dollar Store courtesy sure I'm going to be frustrated. When I came to pick up the dogs on the last stay both the front desk employees greeted me like mean girls entering the high school cafeteria. No greeting, dirty looks and certainly no thank you after I paid. I was also schooled by one of the staff members after I paid. His dialogue started with "You may not be aware, but we have a drawerer to close out which is why..." bla bla bla. Rude. I have a clothing business. Allow me to offer some suggestions of how to answer the telephone or customer inquiries. I receive many emails that read like this: I ordered the shirt in Small, I need to exchange for medium. My response to my customer is this: Thank you for your purchase! So sorry for the trouble. Yes there are 2 ways to exchange... etc, etc, etc. Versus this response to customer: Okay will we charge the Paypal on file for the return freight? I spoke with a manager who first informed me that my file noted that I'd hung up on staff on multiple occasions. She felt it necessary to note this before even a false courtesy "Sorry for the trouble..." If you're going to keep notes on the dog owners, you better perform the services at 100% with that same energy used to write your little notes about your clients. read more

I took a full tour on this location, and found it very clean, very well maintained, and staffed by caring people. Lots of activities for the dogs, including a water area for play as well as indoor play areas that are separated by size. HOW DARE THEY DISCRIMINATE against my dog breed and any others! she said people were complaining! are you for real they should shut this place down! IT IS NOT THE DOG it is how you bring up your dog! that is a slap in the face, my dog is the sweetest you ever met. THIS IS UNETHICAL they need to be turned in to someone! they do an assessment for a damn reason! ANY DOG can be VICIOUS depending on the way they are brought up! There are many dogs in there that are meaner than mine, and take some peoples word on this and never allow rottys in to play. That is stereotyping and they should be ashamed of themselves! After losing my last pet in a pet-sitting accident while out of the country, I was extremely nervous about boarding my 5 month old kitten for two weeks, but an unexpected international trip left me with no other options. I frantically researched cat boarding facilities and landed on Second Home Pet Resort. After practically having an anxiety attack in the lobby while dropping her off, the cat specialists and manager walked me through a tour of where she would stay and let me hang out for a while to get familiar with the facilities. They were so compassionate and even sent me picture messages later that same night after I left. When I picked her up after my trip, the cat girls got teary-eyed saying goodbye to my sweet kitty. They let me know that, since they weren't completely booked while I was away, they upgraded her to a kitty penthouse for the entire two weeks for free! Uma, my kitten, was happy, sweet, healthy, and playful as ever after I brought her home. I could tell she got great attention from the staff. What an incredible, compassionate experience at Second Home Pet Resort. This paranoid, protective cat mother highly, highly recommends them for cat boarding services. read more

We won't be returning to this place. With a new puppy at home and diminished sleep, I purchased the Groupon for Second Home Pet Resort thinking we could use it and get some much needed sleep. We got the sleep. The puppy got diarrhea. :( The facility itself is very nice. Everything that you think your beloved pet will enjoy. We returned to pick up our puppy 2 days later (first they attempted to charge us in full without the Groupon) to be informed that our pup was having some bathroom issues. To which my response was, did you give him chicken? Our pup has a poultry intolerance. They asked me if I told them that. While I'm quite sure it was repeated a few times about his sensitive stomach, I was blamed for their lack of knowledge. I know I wrote it on his paperwork that they required I fill out. Why did I fill it out if they weren't going to read it? So while I know my puppy is the most loving and sweet boy, he will not be returning because no one apologized for his stomach pains and they blamed me. It was incredibly unprofessional. The customer is ALWAYS right. It's just good business practice. read more
