I am always on the hunt for a GOOD deli spot (always hard to find) and Second Reef Deli is the best I have found in this area. Not only is the quality of the sandwiches high, but the owners and staff are always down to earth and amazing with their attention to detail / customer service. We've even been treated to free chips by the owner! I am now gluten free and happy they have a wrap option, but my one wish would be for them to find a good sliced bread to have on hand for us. The wraps are small (they give you 2) and hard for them to wrap, therefore hard for you to eat without it falling apart. I happily eat it anyways, but a good bread would make it even better! As far as ambiance, the restaurant always has tables available and the plaza it's in is quiet and clean. Laina proclaimed her Cloudbreak the best tuna sandwich ever! The tuna salad had the perfect consistency and just the right amount of mayonnaise. The veggies were fresh and there was a good amount of each ingredient. She thought the squaw bread for a great choice to bookend the tuna and the preparer wasn't too liberal with the salt and pepper. The Mediterranean Orzo Salad was equally impressive with a good amount of zest from the lemon juice and the orzo pasta wasn't overcooked. There was a decent of amount of olives, tomato slices and basil mixed in with the pasta. I was equally enamored with my selections, but I stopped short of calling the Nazare' the best meatball (the honor still belongs to Frank's Philadelphia), but it was an excellent sandwich nonetheless. The sandwich has a pretty simple list of ingredients, but the combination of those items produced a complex flavor profile. The meatballs were nicely seasoned and tender, the marinara complimented the spices in the meatballs and this is one of the few times you won't read about me complaining about a lack of cheese. My one complaint would be the grinder roll was on the small side for the price point, but there was (5) good decent size meatballs tucked under the cheese. The potato salad had the right amount of seasoning, a good amount of egg and onion and the potatoes had just the right amount of mashing done to them. My wife makes a wicked tater salad, but this was pretty good coming from a restaurant. Rohlinism: Never criticize your partner's cooking if you want to keep eating ... or living for that matter! The sandwiches here are really good. The use quality ingredients and they do not skimp - you get a very full sandwich. However, know a couple things before you go in. They always take forever to fill an order. This is not Subway fast by any means. So plan to wait about 10 minutes for your sammie and it's probably best to order ahead. Secondly, it ain't cheap. Update 3: upon arrival we were informed that the company was sold. Of course as a regular customer I was not happy to hear that, because the owner and the young guys that usually worked were very friendly and polite and I loved them and especially Yudi. But I kept an open mind, because we were told that they use the same ingredients. There were a few things that I noticed right off of the bat. They toast the bread in butter (Yes, it's delicious, but I try to avoid butter) and I wasn't aware of that it was toasted in butter, nobody said anything... I thought it was just toasted in an oven. Secondly, the sandwiches are made with less meat. Load those sandwiches up!!! The old employees used to make the sandwiches so big that I had to figure out how to even eat it. And lastly, the sprouts on my sandwich were noticeably brown. If a fresh ingredient is brown, it's no longer a fresh ingredient, so don't use it. We pay for the quality fresh ingredients here. If you want the regulars to continue coming, take these into consideration. Hopefully by the next time I return there will be a noticeable improvement in these things since that is what yelp is for. Update: I'm posting an updated review just because 1. I can, and 2. This place is HANDS DOWN the best sandwich I have ever had the enjoyment of eating. I honestly don't even understand how a sandwich gets this fresh. The bread is so squishy, the produce is bright and colorful, and the portions are hearty. Sandwich love! I had walked past this deli several times on my way to Pengo Drink Station and after reading the Yelp reviews decided to check it out. Glad that I did! This is a small deli in the 24 Hour Fitness/Dunkin Donuts shopping center in Laguna Hills off of McIntyre and La Paz. It has a surf them to it with sandwiches and salads with such names as "Trestles" and "Newport Wedge." Some of the salads sounded really good, but we decided to go with sandwiches. I chose the Varazze which was an Italian Cold Cut combo sandwich. This thing was loaded with Genoa salami, Capocollo, ham, pepperoni, provolone, lettuce, tomato, red onion, light mayo and oil and vinegar. It was all on a fresh grinder roll and was absolutely delicious. The bread was fantastic and added to the tastiness of the sandwich. I was making a lot of happy noises while enjoying this sandwich. :) My fiance ordered a hot sandwich, the Salt Creek which was a Pastrami grinder with pastrami, provolone, mustard and sliced dill pickle on a grinder roll. I had a bite. It was tasty and he enjoyed this very much. He made a comment about how good the bread was also. Those rolls were awesome! We ordered sides of chips and drinks. They also have slow, potato salad and Mediterranean Orzo salad as sides. Beside set sandwich options, you can build your own sandwich. They have many salad options as entrees, also. Milkshakes are also offered on their menu. The restaurant has a few booths, and some tables and chairs inside. There is shared outdoor patio seating with the other food businesses, also. Staff is very warm, friendly and helpful here. Very nice guys staffing the place. It got crowded fast after they opened on the weekend day that we visited. Glad I finally stopped in. Your initial reaction to paying an arm and a leg for a freaking deli sandwich might be the same as mine: WTF. But, trust me, IT IS WORTH IT. Just do it! I made a gigantic, sloppy mess of myself and must have used a dozen napkins, but I didn't care. The sandwiches here are so good! On the door, they have a link to a website with coupons in it which is great. I love the squaw bread with turkey, provolone, and veggies. I always get the half sandwich which is a good size. As you can tell in this picture, the half sandwich actually uses the same amount of bread, but the full one has more meat. I was diligently searching for the latest and greatest shop for sandwiches close to home ... and couldn't pass up the opportunity to try Second Reef Deli based on the incredible reviews. The shop is in a sort of "sleepy" section of a shopping center, and I hope that doesn't hold them back from success bc I want to eat here everyday. First impressions, when I walked in, there was 3 tables eating, a young man (who was busy) greeted us with a smile, he was friendly and accommodating. The Owner (I think) is the person who made our sandwiches, and man were they AMAZING. I ordered the Cloudbreak (Tuna) based on another reviewer stating it was life changing. First, it was a GIANT sandwich on SQUAW (OMG MY FAVORITE AND NOT READILY AVAILABLE), and I make a MEAN Tuna, but this was SIMPLE and DELICIOUS. I would order again... and again... and again. I added FRESH jalapenos (LOVE that they have the real deal and not those BS jar'ed versions). My Husband had the California Reuben - also amazing. We got some sides that were equally good, potato and orzo salads. BUT, what still resonates with me TODAY (3 days after my yummy sandwich) was an interaction I overheard between the owner and young kid working the counter. I didn't hear the whole thing, but I DID hear the Owner say "Hey, great job today." Short, simple reinforcement of the good he saw. As someone who manages 100+ 20 somethings', one of the things I coach my team to most often is the need to catch people doing things right more often,and then say it out loud. There's many reasons for this, but in this moment I felt like .. ah, that's why this kid if friendly and engaging. He knows it's important to the owner, and his efforts will be recognized.
