This is my last day at Secrets Capri, and since it's raining, I thought I'd add my review.
We booked our vacation through American Airlines Vacations, and our transportation was booked through that package with BD Travel. They wait outside the terminal holding a sign, and direct you to your car. Once there, they check you in with your voucher, tell you point blank that there will be an agent at the hotel who you'll need to see in order to confirm your return trip, and imply that that agent will want to sell you excursions. That's fine, whatever. When the time came to meet with her, it was much less painful than anticipated, and she's very friendly. There are many different options to choose from, and it's nice that if you do decide to take them up on it, you can do it in person at the hotel. Thanks, Brenda!
Now onto the actual Secrets experience:
Upon arrival at the resort, you're greeted with a cool towel, and you think, "wow! How nice! I feel so lux already!" That feeling doesn't last, however. You're then escorted to check in where they try to upsell you a new room. Free upgrade when you've already spent about $2500 to stay here? Nope. Upsell by about $600 just for a better view. No, thanks. Then you're passed off to someone else who tries to sell you on going to all of their sister resorts in the area so that you can participate in some kind of raffle to "win" another Secrets vacation. Then they tell you what's actually included in your all inclusive stay, and what's not. And then you get a book of coupons you can use to apply to the spa or cabanas, etc. Listen, if I'm spending that amount of money not even for a full week with a shit view out my room, there is no way you should be charging me anything extra ever. So finally, when you decline all the offers and are then allowed to go to your room, you have peace for the rest of the day. The next day, though, you'll get a call asking if you'd reconsidered on any of their offers. Luckily, that seemed to be the last of it, but I have to say, it was a huge turn off. I've just come from another country -- let me go to my room and be quiet before you try to suck more money out of me.
I have to say, I'm frankly disappointed by the food. If you plan to come here to get Mexican food, you're mistaken. The only place that serves Mexican food (in Mexico) is the cactus club between the beach and the pool. It's excellent. But they close between 10 and 11 am. Why?? Why do you have to close between that random hour, especially when you serve breakfast? I don't understand. Don't bother going to Oceana for dinner -- neither of us liked what we got. The buffet is fine, but frankly, I've had a better buffet on a cruise ship, and I HATE buffets. The Italian place -- ugh. Not that the food was bad, but it wasn't spectacular, AND I couldn't just order a glass of wine. They wanted to sell me a $75 bottle. Um, wut? NO. Didn't actually get to eat at the seaside grill because it was full with a 45 minute wait. Honestly, the best meal I had was in Himitsu. It was EXCELLENT. But again, I didn't go to Mexico to get Japanese. Also, the coffee sucks everywhere except in the little coffee shop in the lobby. But don't expect a big American size cup. You'll get a tiny one, and you'll get used to it.
Those are my only grievances.
The resort itself is beautiful. It's extremely clean, well maintained, there is always someone cleaning the pool, there are always people on the beach trying to keep the seaweed under control, every single person we've come into contact with could not be nicer or more helpful, drinks on the beach and by the pool are great, and housekeeping is impeccable. My room has been constantly immaculate. I am on the ground floor, and do not have any mildew smell from the rain coming in as others have experienced. One thing I don't like is that from noon on it's like they turn the pool into the club. Super loud club music pumping for at least 3-5 hours a day. I like that this is a smaller resort, but since it's so small, you really can't get away from it. My room is also right off the pool, so I can't even escape it fully in my bed. I love the early morning smooth jazz/spa sounds by the pool, though. Much more my speed.
Would I come back? Probably. Would I recommend it to people? Yes. My grievances are not really an issue for most people. Did I have fun? Yeah, but I'm sick, so how much fun could I have? This was a trip for relaxation, and this resort was very good for that. If I had wanted more things to do, I would be a little disappointed. I'm not a peopley person anyway, so I tend to go the opposite direction of the flock.
*I've had no issues with water and sickness, but I have not used the tap water to brush my teeth. They keep the room very well stocked with bottled water and sodas.
**wifi is excellent. read more
