My condo association board went through all kinds of problems trying to get a key copied after the property management company lost track of a card we were supposed to have to copy keys. At one point I wanted to just tap out and say, "Screw it. Replace the whole doorknob." But that would've been a complete waste of money. Although we were able to resolve the issue with another locksmith (after five hours of calls to locksmiths, manufacturers, emails, etc.), I still want to give kudos to Security Shop--Tom and Barry specifically--for attempting to help me when I thought I'd exhausted all possibilities. (Actually, a bunch of reps from there talked to me, the secretary and a second property manager who wasn't in charge of handling our keys at the time. All of the reps tried to help, minus one guy on the phone who I hung up on, as much as possible.) Interestingly, the property management company that we don't work with anymore recommended this company to us, which was the reason I thought that they had handled our keys in the first place. Why they didn't, who knows? But I will keep their names on file should we need more keys. Good customer service goes a long way. read more

I wish I could split my review. The storefront for Security Shop in Hyde Park is 5 stars. They are knowledgeable, helpful, and skilled. The northside shop that comes out to handle all onsite work, such as installing new locks, has been a huge disappointment. I would give them 1 star. When they show up, the work is ok. But there has been no follow-through to get back to me with suggestions, estimates, or appointments, despite repeated emails and phone calls. I'm now searching for a new locksmith service as I renovate a new home. read more

Boy do I love the Security Shop! Our building has these crazy looking, highly secure keys. After we bought our place, we ocellated between whether to get new locks or not. I called the company listed on the key and spoke with a sweet gentleman who walked me through the process. There are codes on our keys that allow them to track down who exactly made them, determine how many keys were cut, etc. Anyhow, after determining we didn't have all the keys that were cut, it made sense we change the lock. They were extremely secure and verified we owned they place and scheduled an appointment for someone to come out. The cutest little man in overalls showed up and taught me so much about keys and how people break in. He quickly put on a new lock, provided keys and was gone. I'm proud to use Security Shop and I'm happy we invested in such a strong brand of key. We've had to get additional keys and they have a brick and mortar where you can pick them up. Steve is THE BEST!! We called to have the latch replaced on our closet door. This is an older door in a vintage apartment. Steve was able to fix the latch and install in less than one day! He was also able to fix the lock on the same closet door, as well as the deadbolt on our storage room door. He communicates well and responds to you quickly. Are you feeling insecure? I mean, in a lock, key, bullet proof safe, need a deadbolt, chain and industrial strength barricade kind of way. This is your place. First off, I was only here because I needed copies of my condo common keys, which are "DO NOT DUPLICATE" and need to be authorized by the condo management company. This is who they authorize, so this is where I go. I lose keys ALL the time, so I've been here a few times. Plus, a lot of people watch my dog, and they require access to the building. If you EVER needed to know ANYTHING about keys, these are your guys. They are like in a parallel universe with key cutting, etc. They know their key shiz. It's actually fairly amazing. I ended up making a few sets of all my precious keys, just for safe keeping. They are a tad pricey, but they are very precise and helpful. Also, if you ever need a safe that bolts to your floor or something of the like, they've got it... This stretch of Clark is fairly easy to park on (meters), and it's in an obviously good neighborhood... I rec these guys over going to the hardware store for heavy duty locks (and God knows, sometimes you need 'em in this crazy city). They'll give you some personal input and find the best fit for you. Our condo building has used this locksmith for all it's lock needs and spent a very good amount of money in past getting keys done for all our building. We consider this building our "go-to" locksmith. They always have very short/curt phone demeanor and it didnt bother me in the past. When we had a break-in in our building and someone kicked open a gate on our property... (on a lock that they changed) of course my first call is the the "Security Shop" for advice on SECURITY... the manager.. Shawn was rude and hung the phone up on me after realizing it was a wooden gate... didnt bother to suggest other options or other security measures.. being that this was a multi-unit building. There are TOO many businesses out there providing good customer service to get rude service from existing providers. Its called being polite... its called good business. If business is so good they can't spend a couple mins on the phone with clients who have spent thousands with them in past...guess who wont be getting a call in future. ps.. It's a pretty exciting moment when you are purchasing a home for the first time and they hand you the key at the closing. Or in our case, keys, numerous keys, plentiful keys, so many keys, it requires a paper bag to carry them in. I've tried to distinguish which is key is for what but even then, we are short keys or over keys, and then of course the keys that don't even open anything. I mean it's a two flat with a garage and basement, one does not need a 100 keys! Enter security shop, we had one of their prompt and friendly techs come out and give our place a security analysis. He laughed at my bulging key chain but I get the feeling he's probably seen worse. We got various estimates from the company for all types of different services. We opted for the master key system in which one key opens all common doors and then it's designated unit. One key, I love the idea, utter simplicity, so happy. I carted the locks down to the shop and they had them keyed in less then a day. We are installing them ourselves to save some pennies. If you don't trust your handyman abilities a technician can come and do the job for you. Have a mentioned that everyone at the shop is super nice? I'm just so pleased I could hug them all, especially now that people don't have to hear me a mile away due to my jangling keys! read more
