This is my favorite Sekisui location. Mainly bc it's the closest to home. The staff is normally friendly and they have specials all the time. Tonight we are trying Monk Fish. I also like their wine and beer selection. For a Japanese restaurant they have good selections and the prices are like $4-$5 for beers and $7-$9 for wine. Pretty good. read more

The last time I went here I was a little disappointed. The parking lot is a mess. It's tiny and you absolutely will get heckled for money. The three times I've been here I was heckled by someone and last time it was someone who actually told me they just needed beer money. Just don't be shocked if it happens. First off, I ordered a beer and it was really, really warm. I just dealt with it, but it wasn't very pleasant. Secondly, this isn't the fault of the restaurant, but there was a kid screaming pretty much 99.99% of the time we were there. The whole family was just loud. The food was okay. We ordered sushi, and the spicy tuna was okay, but it felt like it was just "hot." There wasn't much actual flavor. It's also really expensive. It was $30 for my boyfriend and I and we only had three rolls and one beer. Overall, I just don't think this location is worth the money. read more

I'd really like to give Sekisui 3 1/2 stars. During happy hour, they have 2 for 1 sake. It' not the flavored sake, but it's good, just the same. The gyoza (pan seared pork dumplings) is my favorite. I can make a meal of just that! Last night, I tried the Tsunami, Grizzlies (in honor of how well the Grizz are doing, currently) and the Arctic rolls. The Tsunami was as spicy as expected, but were really "fishy." The other two rolls were delicious. I sat at the sushi bar and was sad that they no longer had the fish/sushi boats that flowed around the sushi bar. If you saw something you liked, you just grabbed it as it floated by. I thought it was a great way to discover something new. Initially, the server was extremely attentive. He even gave us our second sake without us asking. His timing could not have been more perfect. However, after our food arrived, we never saw him again. Someone took our plates away, refilled our water (no joke...like 100 times - that guy took his water filling job uber seriously. Not that I minded.), but no sign of our server. Finally, we asked someone to ask our waiter for our check. Had the service not been so poor toward the end of the meal, I would have had no problem giving Sekisui 4 stars. I'll definitely be back. The food is good, the atmosphere is good, the people are nice, and your water glass is always filled. :-) Oooo, and Sekisui Midtown had a bike rack installed a few weeks ago. First off, the water filling is so on point at this place and has been for the past 7 years. The zipang sake, advertised as "light and effervescent" left our tongues tingling with delight. House cucs (cucumbers) on seaweed salad were perfectly marinated in the sauce and we do not know what that sauce was. Also, the House salad did not disappoint We were extremely happy with the "Whole Foods" standard ginger on our first plate, and even requested more. but upon arrival, we saw, to our disgust, "Kroger borderline CashSaver" ginger. It was pink. I've never personally worked with Swiss Chard, (but I've heard he's a nice guy) but the Miso soup contained leafy greens that were chopped to a precision only a samurai could have completed. Speaking of samurais, the Samurai meal was tasty but *not* served on a sword as one would assume. The serving size was plentiful but the teriyaki sauce comparatively speaking was minimal. On our first scrumptious sushi roll bite, we noticed the electric house beats...and liked them. The Dragon roll made us feel icky and we're not used to feeling that way here. The tiger roll had rubbery damp fried shrimp. The after spicy squishy fish (as listed on the menu: Spicy Tuna Roll) had some heat, but allowed you to continue tasting all aspects of the meal. The Jackson 5 roll was classic like a black and white tux. The Philly roll was simple,smooth, and satisfying. Salmon and scallions was a crowd favorite. We ended our meal with that and our taste buds had a standing ovation. Dessert #tobecontinued Even though I put 4 stars, Philly Tiger Jackson rates his experience a 135. This is my favorite location, yellowtail cheek cut fresh (so it's not always available, but well worth it when it is). Love the happy hour and wine selections (beer is problematic)Menu is fairly easy to navigate if you're gluten-free or gluten restricted, like me. The staff is is great, plenty coverage now and they are attentive. The chefs at the back bar are the best. They have fake crab and REAL crab, so look for blue crab or soft shell for the REAL. I have not been to this place in years. I am a huge sushi lover but for some reason I always seem to skip this place. No particular reason just kinda forgot about this place. What brought me back was a birthday dinner for one of my girlfriends. She wanted to go so I of course I was excited! I was the first to arrive so I got a table, a drink and waited. The waitress was so sweet and attentive the whole evening. When my friends finally arrived we ordered family style and got 4 sushi rolls and split them. A little taste of everything. I am a bit of a sushi snob and the sushi was so yummy and fresh. For the birthday girl we ordered the deep fried cheese cake and ice cream...it was to die for! It was so delicious I almost ate half of it! My overall experience was a great one! I am looking forward to my next sushi hankering because I will for sure being going back to this place!!! read more

I discovered Sekisui Midtown one lovely evening with a friend. Now, I have been to Sekisui Pacific Rim and a few other Sekisuis and thought this would be no different. However, for some reason that is unexplained, this place instantly became my new favorite sushi spot. Maybe it is because the ambiance is better. Maybe it's because they have great wine selection. Maybe it is because they have killer sushi rolls. I don't know. I just know that I live a mile from Sekisui Pacific Rim, and I choose to go to this location instead. I guess I really love how they have delicious sushi specials on the back of their menu. They have a roll called the Jackson 5 that is my favorite thing in the restaurant. I think I order it every time. Each time I have been I have never been dissatisfied with my food. I just love it, and I can't explain it. Props to you, Sekisui Midtown. read more

I have mixed feelings about Sekisui. On the one hand, the sushi has consistently been excellent, which is not something to take for granted. On the other hand, the service is completely hit or miss, and the restaurant itself feels very run-down and cramped to me (I much prefer the club atmosphere of Bluefin, so it may just be personal taste here). Let's start with service. The hostesses are usually bimbos, so getting seated can be a challenge, and with the cramped area around the stand, it can get pretty awkward. The servers...well, they vary. Some are reasonably informed and attentive, while others, not so much. If you bring us two spicy tuna hand rolls when we only ordered one, don't then try to remove the plate you just set down (after a lengthy wait) to go and "fix" it, aka throw one out. The polite thing to do is to just leave it as is and only charge us for one, since you messed up. On the plus side, they have a guy whose sole job is to go around re-filling water, and boy does he take his job seriously. The sushi is great, but let me just address a pet peeve I have about sashimi plates. I LOVE sashimi, and I usually get a sashimi plate of some kind and just one roll to go with it. Now, to me, sashimi implies two things: A) raw and B) fish. So it drives me nuts when my sashimi plate inevitably includes cooked shrimp, crab stick, smoked salmon, or, for some reason, soft egg omelet (?!). When I'm paying upwards of $20 for a sashimi assortment, I want it to be raw fish, not cheap filler stuff. I recently attended a large dinner (about 18 people) at Sekisui, and I have to say, I was not very impressed at how they handled it. We were seated in the front area of the restaurant, kind of jammed in, and people kept brushing up against the chalkboard they have up there and getting chalk on their clothes. Our one waitress (who I know to be pretty good), was completely overwhelmed, and drinks, appetizers, cooked entrees, and sushi all came out at what seemed like random intervals -- the woman next to me waited half the meal for her drink (a canned champagne...yes, canned), and I heard the waitress telling people who had ordered cooked entress that the kitchen was, yes, out of large plates, out of certain proteins, and that they were "cutting up vegetables now." This kind of thing does not reassure me about Sekisui's competence, so it may be a while before I go back. read more

Was craving uber-healthy food, so sushi it was! After spending 6 wks in Japan a couple years ago, I am a bit of a sushi snob. Fake crab (I'm sorry all of you who like this) makes me physically sick to taste or even smell. And the fake crab-less rolls I used to enjoy no longer do the trick. So,basically after a few disappointments after my trip, I avoided US "sushi." Having said that, even Memphis can get sashimi right with the right fish. I thoroughly enjoyed my sushi selection of tuna, salmon, and white tuna. I asked for a side of cucumber (no, miss, not the cucumber salad - just a literal pile of cucumber slices) and some ponzu sauce, and that and the great weather made for a good evening. The inside, by the way, was FREEZING. I have never been here and didn't feel like I needed a winter coat. Three stars b/c 1) no way could we have eaten side had the weather not been awesome, and 2) all I ate was the sashimi, which, as I said, ain't hard to do. We witnessed something we'd never seen before at a restaurant. It was a few days before Easter this year. A Thursday evening. The food was acceptable but too expensive. A female manager on duty totally flipped out on a customer and his family sitting near by. An older couple - quiet& calm , out with their 3 teenage grand daughters sitting at a nearby table. They were so embarrassed when this lunatic manager asked them all to leave. We were celebrating a special occasion and she totally blew our good vibes, and everybody else who witnessed the scene. We spent $200 and deserved an apology so I called the restaurant the next day , left my info but no one showed me the courtesy of a return call. I tried several more times and FB messaged them - still no reply. Do yourself a favor and pick another spot. We will never go back! Ever. read more

My husband and I decided to give Sekisui a shot for a date night. Sushi, then games at Rec Room. Sounds awesome, right? Wrong. We arrived and were seated. It had been a comfortable 70 outside all day, but the air was absolutely BLASTING inside, leaving me freezing cold. The music consisted of really loud early 2000's heavy rock (ala Creed, Nickelback...ew) which absolutely killed the vibe. Our waitress came, brought drinks, and took our orders. We got three rolls to split, plus clear soup to start. The soup was standard, nothing special. It came in a timely manner, which is more than I can say for anything else. We waited, and waited, and waited. An hour later and our waitress hadn't come by to update us or check on us at all. I was so hungry I felt sick. We heard other tables, who had just arrived, told that they should order a substantial appetizer, as the sushi line was really backed up. That would have been nice to know. Tables who had arrived after us had received their rolls and were finishing eating. Finally we had had enough. We got up to leave (which I rarely do at restaurants, especially so late into a meal) and found our waitress standing at the bar. My husband went to give her cash for the soup and she told us she "was just about to come and tell you your rolls were ready. The chef is plating them right now!" I call BS. You hadn't updated us once so far, but were just about to come and let us know...? I think not. Anyway, her guilt tactic worked, and we decided to stay. It was still a few minutes before they arrived. The rolls were alright, but I honestly can't remember which ones we ordered to give any more specifics. I was so unimpressed and just fed up at this point that we called it a night and skipped the rest of our plans We got a free dessert, which was nice, but even that (red bean ice cream) wasn't all that impressive. We found ourselves craving some serious sushi this evening, but didn't have the desire to get out of pajamas. Cue Midtown Sekisui's take out menu. I'm not a big fan of carry out sushi. There's something to be said for eating it in the confines of the actual restaurant- but when those cravings call, especially after 10 months of no sushi eating- you do what you gotta do. We ordered the following: crunchy shrimp roll, tuna roll, Philly roll, t.k. roll, edamame and the squid and seaweed salad. All arrived as gorgeous (and tasty) as they would have been in the restaurant. And though I am sure we are all well aware of Sekisui's involvement in Project Green Fork, there's something comforting about your food being delivered in recycled cardboard and paper products instead of styrofoam and unnecessary garbage. Needless to say- I'm a huge fan of Sekisui. Whether you dine in or carry out, it's delicious. read more

Worst service ever in my life. Went to go enjoy a good time with my girlfriend. She was grieving from a recent loss. She went outside I got our food to go, paid and left. Got home it was the complete wrong order. I guess someone else enjoyed our order. Called the restaurant when I arrived home and was treated as if asking for a refund was stealing and fraudulent. The Manager on the phone referred to us a table number instead of my name and refused the refund even after I offered to bring it back to the restaurant. I asked what time the restaurant opened...b/c it appeared they were not ready for customers, they open at 5pm! Saturday night. The service was beyond slow. We arrived at 6:35 and ordered at 6:45. At 7:15 we were told our sushi was still not ready and would be another 10 minutes. We cancelled our order, paid for the two beers, and left. On the way out we noticed the sushi "chefs" working: not one Japanese chef there Not what you'd expect from an authentic Japanese restaurant. I have been a loyal midtown sekisui fan since I moved to Midtown in 2012. I sit on the patio or get take out at least once a month and at one time was a member of their loyalty program. Last Friday's take out experience was so horrendous that my friends and I will never return. I ordered $90 worth of food and 3 out of the 6 rolls I ordered were completely wrong (I have been eating the same roles for 8 years so I know). When I realized this and called to complain the girl who Answered the phone was so unbelievably rude my friends and I were shocked. She promised to refund me some money which never happened. When I asked for her name she raised her voice and said she would not give me a name because I would just call her manager and complain about her. I kept pressing and she finally told me her name was Paige, which I doubt is correct. She refused to connect me with a manager and never fixed the problem. I will never return and will no longer recommend this place to friends. read more

Asked for no rice in our sushi, which my wife and I do everywhere, and it was not good at all. They wrapped all rolls in cucumber, I think because they did not know how to wrap them with seaweed when no rice is present. This made the food rather tasteless. Also, they said that it would take an hour to prepare with this special request and ended up making us wait an additional 20 minutes after reaching the restaurant. All other sushi restaurants have been able to make delicious sushi within a reasonable amount of time even with our apparently complicated orders. We made a 7pm reservation but honestly it felt like we were walk-ins. We were offered water right away but that is where the good service ended. Our waitress seemed overwhelmed and took forever to check on our table. I also wrote my food allergy restriction (celiac) on the card provided but feel it was pointless since soy sauce was still put on the dish we ordered. We also had a hard time trying to flag our waitress to pay and on numerous occasions the hostess and bus boy had to get her. Absolutely astonishing. You cannot go wrong with Sekisui. The atomosphere created by the small delicate restaurant mimics that which you might actually find on the streets of Japan. Fans of sushi will love all of the selections availabe on the menu as they are prepared while you sit at the large central sushi bar. I would suggest arriving early because the place fill up fast. You might also enjoy theie happy hour, available from 5:00 pm, to around 7:00 pm when you can get any sushi from the bar for only $2.30 per plate. You cannot go wrong with any of Sekisui's prepared dishes as well. Expect to pay about $12 per entree. Sekisui offers an enjoyable atmosphere for anyone who want to make a reservation, but for those who are on the go, they also offer carryout. read more

My favorite midtown sushi place. Great ambiance, delicious sushi, friendly staff. You have the option to eat indoors or out, and they have a great variety on the menu. They have all of the crowd 'favorites' in terms of sushi, but they also have varieties you'll only find at this location. Whatever you get, it's always scrumptious. If they delivered to me, I'd find a way to get fat off of sushi. Worth the trip, though, regardless!! So tasty! read more
