Stay away from the wasabi shumai..... Tastes like cat food..... But the wasabi mustard it comes with is awe inspiring A friend and I went a early dinner the other day...got there shorty after they re-opened around 510ish or so. Looking back, i think this is where we went wrong. First of all the service was absolutely amazing. Our server was patient with my inability to decide on anything, and gave good recommendations. We both ordered the seaweed salad for an appetizer, a must for me when ever dining at a Japanese restaurant. They were average. Little skimp on portion but how much seaweed does a person really need? It was also a little limp, and i got the feeling that this batch was left over from the earlier lunch. My friend also got the wasabi shumai, which was a steamed wonton with pork. It sounded delicious, when it arrived we were instantly disappointed. Dull colors, and the pork looks spongy and artificial. The dipping sauces that I mentioned earlier were AMAZING! but that was the end of any kind of amazingness of this dish. The wontons were squishy, not a pleasant texture, and the pork tasted exactly like it looked. I even found myself wondering out loud that you shouldn't wonder if you are eating spam when in a normally decent restaurant. My friend compared it to cat food. So Stay Away! the sushi we ordered was okay. nothing special. The Godzilla roll i got once again was fine but had too much eel sauce, and the Philly roll had way too much cream cheese, truly overpowered the fish and over all flavor of the roll. I truly did not understand what had gone so wrong this time?!? I have gone so many times and always had a great experience. I have visited the mid town location a few more times now since my 1st visit and it has seemingly gotten better each time. However, I still love the pictures of the rolls on the back of the menu. The service has never been a problem in my visits, each time my glass is always full. The blue crab appetizer is still outstanding and I have tried almost all of the specialty rolls now and all have been great. Sushi is probably my favorite food thats not named BBQ so I have had my share of bad rolls that were not up to par but just not here. read more

I went on a first date here and I honestly feel like the only reason it ended well was because we came here. Our server was the best and so funny! I hate I can't remember her name. After trying SPR the night before, we tried the Sekisui Midtown. This was the best sushi ever. The server told us about a hidden menu item, It was a dish not on the menu that has fried calamari and shrimp and onions. My favorite dish. We then tried a few rolls with a bunch on nigiri. The ocean pyramid was a fun dish and looked so beautiful we almost didn't want to touch it but glad we did. The sushi was very fresh and this restaurant group serves very fresh food and high quality sushi. The service was great the atmosphere was great. Whenever my boyfriend and I are feeling like having some sushi this is our go to place! They have a ton of unique sushi rolls, the Hudson is our favorite and a must if you come here! We always get seated right away and the waiting staff is always top notch! Also, they always have a great music playlist which is an added bonus. Sekisui Midtown is one of my favorite spots for sushi in Memphis or Tennessee overall. Whether you're a fan of rolls or omikase, they surely will not disappoint. Their fish is super fresh probably due to Fedex's headquarters being located in Memphis, but I'm not complaining. Some of my personal favorite items include the chirashi bowl if I'm craving sashimi. On the flipside, my favorite roll is the S.P. Roll. Overall, it's definitely worth a try, if you're craving sushi while in Memphis! read more

I've had my various issues with the Sekisui Co. over the years, but they do usually put out some good sushi. Probably not one of those places you walk out of saying "oh dear god that was fantastic" but then again there are very few sushi bars like that in memphis that would illicit such reflective statements. But as Sushi is probably my favorite food, and could easily eat it 2-3 meals a day, I would be okay making this a regular spot for lunch. I definitely prefer it to the downtown location. But the Cordova location is still some of the best sushi in Memphis, and yes, it's been annexed directly on the line, so its still Memphis ;) read more

The sushi is FYE! The sushi is always good here, and not extremely pricey. I recommend the Fire Roll and the Jackson Five Roll! I don't know about the others, but at this location, they always have good music playing. The parking can be kind of annoying here too. read more

Fresh fish and unique fish (uni, munkfish liver, etc.) are usually available here and I can't say the same for any other sushi restaurants in memphis. My favorite is the T-Ruth roll. Sekisui is fairly versatile, offering a wide selection of sushi and Japanese cuisine in a central location, but the portions and pricing can be somewhat lackluster. While the nigiri and sashimi is very well prepared, I'm often disappointed by the small size and average quality of the rolls, especially compared to Red Koi or Osaka. Service is average, but they will always keep your glass full for sure. I usually only order takeout now since the atmosphere is kinda dead. read more

The hot appetizers (pork dumplings and fried spring rolls) and sushi were great! There aren't too many rolls on the menu that are all raw (we really only ever go for raw), but the kitchen was more than accommodating. IF I had never been outside of the midsouth and this was my sushi experience I must admit that I would not be the fan of Japanese food that I am. Fortunately, my career allows me to be in California every few weeks to really experience good to great food venues. Bluefin has a good "vibe"; however, the value you get for price for food is really bad for the sushi. I have never seen sashimi cut as thin as when ordered here. You can literally see through it. Very poor selection of rolls. Crab consists of the imatation crab stick. Much more suited for a cat fish buffet than in my California roll. That said, I still dine here once every five to six weeks for lunch. They introduced a new menu about a month ago. What to say about Sekisui?....hmmmm. Well the sake was good. Though a bit overpriced, as is everything on their menu. I've been to the midtown location several times since moving to Belvedere, only to find myself left more disappointed each time. The sushi is way overpriced and each time has tasted like it had been left sitting out for a day or two. The same goes for their shashimi and nigiri. The only thing I find myself enjoying is the Ika Fry, tho still overpriced. mean how can you go wrong with deep fried anything, right? I'd recommend hitting up Robata on Overton Square for your sake drinking and Japanese food fill. No sushi there though. Either way, Sekisui is not your best bet. read more

I'm in Memphis at least 2-3 times a year and always get sushi here. The quality of the sushi continues to deteriorate. I've made my last visit here. I'll find another place to get sushi from while in Memphis. The time was by far the worst! Rolls were so loose and sloppy forget chopsticks, you couldn't pick them up with your hands without it falling apart. Dynamite roll is normally spicy, but someone forgot to tell the chef. read more

My friends and I frequent this midtown favorite almost once a week. We do this because it offers the best variety of sushi in the midtown area. It is convenient and it taste great. BUT, and that is a big but, this is by far the biggest bunch of inexperienced servers I have ever had the displeasure of tipping. I have worked in the restaurant business for well over 7 years and firmly believe and hold true to leaving a tip everywhere I go. I cringe when tipping the servers here. They are rude, sloooooww, and have very little menu knowledge. I wish midtown Sekisui would reconsider the service training program that is currently in use. Its not working! read more

My husband and I are loyal when it comes to food. If you can prove that you have good service and great food, we'll come back forever. Sekisui has absolutely proven that time and time again---it's definitely our "go-to" sushi place, whether it's a night out or when friends come in town. Best roll hands down is the Jacksonville. We always order the Redbirds, Grizzlies, Philly, and Hurricane, too. They have a great clear soup as well. Their service is great, the atmosphere is chill, and they have a patio that's great for summer nights and cocktails! Be prepared to spend at LEAST $75 if you want four or so good rolls and a few drinks. Worth it!! read more

Wow, hadn't eaten at this Sekisui in about a year and I don't know what happened but the quality has really declined: had the eel roll, the dragon roll, and the grizzlies roll and there was very little fish/shrimp and mostly filler. I basically ate rice and tempura crumbles wrapped in seaweed. Very disappointed - this place used to have decent sushi. Will drive the extra 10 mins next time for Sakura. read more
