Really appreciate the kind people at Selam Market. They always have fresh injera (unless it's Ethiopian Christmas so be sure to order ahead for pickup) and other spices, coffee, etc. available. Both young lady and man who work the counter when I stop by are very kind. Quick personal anecdote: once when I stopped by and the Bay Area was experiencing large scale credit card issues, they just wrote down what I owed them and let me come by and pay later (which I did ; ). We shared a table at the Cambrian Park Farmer's Market with a nice Ethiopian American family. We got on the topic of how much we enjoyed Ethiopian tea. They recommended getting Ethiopian tea and the tea spices (cardamon, cinnamon, etc) for the water at Selam Market. A quick trip to the store found a small ethnic market catering to the East African communities. The owner was very helpful in showing me the various teas (there are even Lipton and British brands of the tea) and he also had several containers of the spices for making the special Ethiopian water for the tea. If your fan of Ethiopian tea then this is a great place to get your supplies (they even carry the extra large clear glass tea cups). read more

I really want to like this place it seems clean and well stocked. My only irritation is the dishonesty of the lady in the counter. First, she was trying to overcharge me to begin with until i caught her. She then apologized and gave me cash back. So i let it go. But then when i got home, i bought 3 bags of the 5 pieces injera in each bag and found that they only had 4 each. So again what a dishonest place. I am so glad I found this market. I wasn't able to find berbere anywhere (except Whole Foods and theirs was nasty) and this place sells a really good tasting one in multiple size containers. This place sells the essentials for Ethiopian cooking, like niter kibbeh spiced ghee, berbere, coffee, tea, and injera. Their injera tastes so fresh and is the best I've had. My partner and I ordered 10 for $10 and kept them in the fridge to stay fresh. They are really nice too. I hope they stay open forever. read more

I was referred to Selam Market by my co worker who has been shopping here since 2011. Boy was I glad I came here! The service here was friendly. I came in to buy their Ethiopian butter and lentils and happen to stumble on their spices, which is very tasty. The prices were reasonable, only cost me less then $10. I loved this market! Just started making Ethiopian food in my instant pot and wanted to stock up on some berbere and injera. They have really delicious injera here for $1 per piece in quantities of 5 or 10. I got 10 and am glad I did! The best part was the very friendly fella ringing me up who was happy to explain recipes and help me find the best ingredients. I had my baby in arms and he even walked me to my car. So sweet! Very good place to pick up injera and all ingredients for food, Ethiopean tea, and coffeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! I picked up some bags of unroasted yergachefe and did it myself in a popcorn roaster. It comes out very good and very inexpensive this way. This place would do more coffee business if they roasted on demand like order ahead and pick up with your food. Bang opposite our place and we went there only yesterday! An Ethiopian store and we were happy to find the tea that we drink every morning and almost every evening...Red Label! and also different lentils that are used for Indian cooking and spices too that I need for my kitchen every now and then. I went in here to buy the mild chili spice berbere, which we love. The salesperson was polite and ultra-friendly, which has been my experience in general with Ethiopian stores and people. We enjoyed chatting together and the salesperson treated me warmly like family or a longtime neighbor who he would see again and again. It's was a real treat. We have a good friend who's Ethiopian and while chatting I found out the store owners know her and her family. I also learned that there's only a relatively small community of Ethiopians even in this big, urban area. I'm sorry if my talking about Ethiopians is politically incorrect but I'm not sure how else to say it... It's just that my own personal experience has been extremely positive. I absolutely adore Ethiopian food, so when I decided to start trying to cook it and found out how hard injera was to make, and that I needed all these exotic spices, I set out to find them both. Selam has by far the best injera of the Ethiopian markets in the area, and if I remember correctly theirs is gluten free (I believe it is all teff or teff and barley) - most places blend in wheat flour. They also have all of the spices I needed: korerima, ajwain, koseret (an essential ingredient for making niter kibbeh, Ethiopian spiced, clarified butter) - you can also BUY niter kibbeh here, which is very good. They sell pre-made berbere too, which is one of the most essential ingredients in Ethiopian cooking (the key ingredient in mesir wat, doro wat, awaze tibs, and many others). They also have all the staples you need like rice, bulgar, teff flour (if you want to make your own injera or just want to experiment with it, it's super nutritious and gluten free), red split lentils for mesir wot, etc. Basically it is a one stop shop if you loveto cook Ethiopian food. I now live in the Central Valley where there are no Ethiopian restaurants for hours, so I get everything I need to cook my own at Selam. The other really nice thing is that the staff is nice, they're always helpful and supportive of me as an American learning how to make Ethiopian food! read more
