After reading Amber K's review of Jourdens Automotive, I'd thought I share my experience. I used to go to Jourdens. I tend to by used cars so its important I get them to a good shop. Lately my shop of choice has been Select Auto. I had heard good things about them, but because they are tucked away on an unpaved drive I had avoided them. Let me tell you, these guys have been very good. First I needed spark plugs and wires for my VW GTI. Howard Cooper wanted $484. Select auto $239. After that we took my wifes camry and got the AC fixed for 150 dollars less than the dealership was charging. Finally a villager minivan I purchased need some brake work done and they did and excellent job. They seem to be very busy and work on all makes and models. I just bought a car for the first time and the guys that work here are really nice and down to earth. I brought the car in for a pre-purchase used car inspection and it was very reasonably priced compared to the google searches I did online to check out how much I should be paying for that service. After the inspection, one of the mechanics called me and broke down all the repairs it needed and explained it in a way that I could understand and visualize. I ended up buying the car and brought the car here for its repairs and once again, I felt comfortable talking to them. The car now feels solid and I'm happy with the service they provided. I've been taking my cars and trucks to Select Auto for repairs and pre-purchase inspections for years now, after having tried a lot of places in the area. Here are the reasons I like Select Auto: 1) First and foremost, they do excellent diagnostics. They don't guess at the causes of problems, and they'll tell you what they're thinking and why. More than any other shop in town, even dealers, I trust Select Auto to figure out the trickiest problems because they've been able to solve problems for me that the others can't more than once. 2) They have a wealth of accumulated knowledge about all vehicle types. They know about the reliability or the likely problems for this and that make/model/year. This is one reason their diagnostics are good, and also what makes them excellent for pre-purchase inspections. 3) They do quality work. The problem is fixed in the right way the first time. 4) They're reasonably priced. 5) They're fast, and they can usually get your car in quickly. I'd go so far as to say that it's actually a relief to take my car to Select Auto when there's something wrong, because I know the real problem will be found and resolved and I won't pay more than I need to. read more

Not to be trusted as they have a shady relationship with cromax auto as my review to them is as follows. VERY angry and disappointed. Despite taking the 2008 Ford f150 to my mechanic at the time, "Select Auto" who I now understand has a working relationship with this place, recommended we take out a $10k loan for this truck. Following the reccomrecommen, I did. My son has been driving this deathtrap for almost a year and we have sunk another $6-7k in this dangerous vehicle. I've used this shop for about ten years for everything from recommended maintenance and oil changes to engine replacement. VWs, Audi, Subarus. I bought the used Audi after Paul checked it out (for $75) and detailed what needed to be done (and after he had rejected a BMW I was interested in. Work has been done promptly and well. Just traded the Audi in for a used Ford, and I'll be using Select for that as well. Oh, and before I forget, there have been times when a problem was fixed simply by Paul's knowing what to do...for no charge. No complaints! read more

Well I didn't end up taking my vehicle here. I called to have a hose replaced. I have the part since I was planning on doing it myself, but decided better. When I told them I had the part the guy said "We don't do it that way" and hung up. He never even gave me the option of bringing it in and having them order the part, since I could have returned the part I previously purchased. I guess they really didn't want my business since they couldn't even take 2 minutes to talk to me. read more

Select Auto Service is amazing! I took my car in for the first time recently; it needed some ball joints replaced, among other things. This work had been priced by a certain dealership at around $1000, but Select did it for $600! My mechanic, P, did a great job explaining what needed to be done, AND he stayed late to get the job finished before the weekend! They even replaced a headlight and only charged for the part. Select Auto is Good People. Independent small business owner, extremely honest, great service, low prices, fast. Someone pointed out Japanese Auto on Main Street (excellent reputation) refers domestic repair to Select Auto, I saw that on an internet review, checked the Japanese Auto website, and that is how I originally found them. Public referrals from your professional peers speak volumes. Don't be put off by how hard this place is to find. It's roughly across from the Washtenaw County Rec Center driveway, way back from a homemade funky mailbox on a gravel parking lot under overgrown trees and looks like it belongs out in the boondocks. I used to go to Jourdens (which is the really convenient place to go if you want to drop your car and walk or bike back to campus or downtown, also a nice independent family business, fast service, competent) but I think Select Auto is more of a bargain and wait times were shorter for me than typical with Jourdens, for my two visits so far. (Like Jourdens, someone personally drove me to work after I dropped my car). Dirt road, homely building, less than chatty, manly, personal interaction. To me these are the signs of good carma. read more

I've had good experiences, but I've also been so angered by the lack of information that I considered giving Select one star. My first few experiences were good - getting a tune up or 75k mile service in good time and for less than another subaru or honda dealer. Then - either they got too familiar or I just had a streak of dealing with Walt. Paul is really conscientious. Walt doesn't call you with the estimate on the price, he goes ahead and does repairs without authorization - or if he gives you the quote, he'll give you the price of the part and "forget" to include the price of the labor... It happened multiple times over two years. Since they're really close to my house, I ignored it because it was convenient, but had it when an entire set of struts was put onto my car - I was just done. I wanted a price because I was selling my car and wanted to know whether they were needed and if so - what price. Since they'd done it without my permission - I was told that they'd put my old ones on - to which I said - yes! Then I was told that they had broken the struts when they were removed so I just needed to pay the bill. Honestly it was so maddening that I just stopped taking my car there. I don't need this to be an advert for my new place - but just deal with Paul and beware of working with Walt... read more

Select Auto is great! Don't be afraid because it's tucked back on a sketchy-looking dirt driveway. These guys are great, honest mechanics with reasonable prices. They don't spend tons of time chatting you up, but they don't upsell you either. They just take the keys, and go diagnose and fix the problem. He does not know Mazda Miata's. I brought my car here after it developed a ticking noise in the engine. I was told that it was due to severely low oil pressure due to the gauge reading at the low end of full. After some research of my own I came to find out that this gauge does not even read oil pressure but is an estimate based on RPM's. I am glad I did because this saved me hundred is repairs for a problem that did not exist. After discovering this we came and picked up the car and extra key. My wife was treated really poorly during this. Overall I can not recommend this shop for any Mazda Miata drivers. read more

I saw many good reviews on yelp.com and then chose this shop when my car died. First, I agree that this shop is honest. I thought I had a bad alternator but they found it was the bad battery that caused the problem. But the price there is very very expensive. They charged me $45 for the battery test. If I go to midas, they charge nothing, and that's also the case for autozone, autoparts, Packard auto repair, and some other shops. Okay, you might think that $45 might not be very expensive, then I would tell you that from Varsity Ford, which is the Ford dealer, they only charge $29.99 for the SAME test. So they are charging more then a dealer to do this work. Sounds funny, right? Then they charge me another $130 for a new battery. I told them I didn't want to buy the battery from them because I could get a much cheaper one from other places, like from the parts department of Varsity Ford, the price for the OEM one is only $90. But they claimed that they had to put the new battery to do the test. OMG, how come a repair shop doesn't have a spare battery to do the test? That's ridiculous, right? Well, they might be careful because they listed something I needed to repair which I actually didn't ask them to check those. But those are fairly easy to be seen if they lifted the car up. And again, the prices they are asking for is very very expensive compared to other shops, nearly the same prices as the dealer. I will list the prices below for you guys to compare. 1. front brakes/rotors, they asked for $302, and the Varsity Ford asks for $330 2. water pump and timing belt, they asked for $675 and the Varsity Ford asks for $680. See how expensive they are? So definitely I won't recommend this shop to anyone. read more

In earlier days I've owned and raced Corvettes and Porsches and I still know enough about the fundamentals of automotive maintenance and repair to recognize what is now a very rare individual; namely, an auto repair mechanic who is thoroughly competent in assessing what repairs are really needed and flawlessly fare and honest in charging for the work actually done. Paul and Walt both meet that criteria. I have had cars repaired at Select Auto Service since Paul opened the shop and I recommend it to others with little need for qualification and without hesitation. I have had Select Auto Service perform various repairs and have always been completely satisfied. They have been honest and thorough. My most recent experience came about because when I had my tires rotated at a tire company which had SAE certified mechanics on staff, out of curiosity, I asked them for an estimate on repairing my gas gauge on my SUV as well as a check out my suspension. They said the tie rods and ball joints needed replacement and due to the mileage on my vehicle that my shock absorbers should be replaced. Total bill for the suspension work was over $800 and the repair of the gas gauge was going to be anywhere between $500-$1000 as they were not sure what the problem was. I took the vehicle to Select Auto. Total bill was a little under $900 for the repair of the gas gauge, (which had to be taken to a General Motors dealership for them to make the repair), replacement of the tie rods, sway bars and a wheel alignment. They checked out the ball joints and did not find anything wrong with them. Nor did they say anything about the shock absorbers. I trust them wholeheartedly for any repairs to my vehicles. read more
