This review is specifically for Matthew, one of the PT's at the Long Beach location. Matthew is very good with his hands and the techniques that he uses to help his patient when managing their pain, are very good as well. I had an appointment with Matthew a couple of days ago and he did a treatment on my lower back and the techniques that he used really helped with my pain immediately. I would recommend him to anyone. Valerie and the team here have taken excellent care of me and my shoulder. They are thorough in their observations and measure progress regularly. Modify exercises and care based on pain and mobility at the time of each appointment. The soft tissue work and guided stretches have gotten me great progress on my shoulder injury. It takes patience and time but I'm definitely feeling the results. The only bummer so far was having to go back to my orthopedic surgeon for a follow up to get a prescription for additional PT sessions. Not their fault at all for whatever reason he wouldn't just call it in so now I'm missing a week of PT progress, but I'll just do what I can at home. read more

This is a really nice little unassuming spot, tucked into the corner of a shopping center. A hidden gem!!! I was lucky to be paired up with AJ, in need of assistance recovering from a partial ACL tear (no surgery). They were kind and informative; quickly validated all of my concerns & created a PT routine that not only worked for my life schedule but helped me feel like I was finally making noticeable (and significant*) progress in my recovery. I've been going to see the crew at Select PT for the past year, after undergoing surgery for a torn rotator cuff. The exercises are simple ones, but that's the point--things that you can continue with at home on your own once your insurance deems that PT is no longer a necessity. I started coming here after I moved to Long Beach in May of 2017. AKA: Select Physical Therapy. 7 months later and I'm still making my visits anywhere from once to twice a week. Hopefully insurance will allow me to continue making appointments while I work through to recover from a sour lower spinal laminectomy. I've been to a lot of physical therapy places around Southbay to Long Beach and even Portland, Oregon. Most have been okay except for one in LB and Portland is just awful. Tried water spa therapy but didn't like sharing a small pool with so many people, kind of icky thinking about some of the hygiene even with all the chlorine. Anyways ... this place is an absolute gem. My sessions are about two hours, one hour dedicated to typical therapy exercise and stretching. The other hour is more hands on manual. Anything from massage and muscle stretching to resistance and motion interaction. It's more like a hands on personal trainer, which is beneficial and enjoyable with my ongoing condition. Not many places do this, so it's nice to find a place that does. Valerie has a lighter touch, and Kenny does the tough stuff for much longer, both on Team 2. There are others that also do the manual work but I have not worked with them. They basically break everyone up into three teams and you often work with anyone in that team, sometimes crossing over. The therapy tables are constantly cleaned by spraying them with alcohol and wiping them down after every use. There are two tables that mechanically raise and lower. There are hot and cold packs too, plus the usual PT equipment. All the staff are nice, especially the teams working on the floor. Some of those girls are extra pretty and sweet! Scheduling is easy and can be done very last minute if needed over the phone or in person. Easy parking in a private lot shared with some other businesses and a church, it can get a little full when busy, you can try the lot on the left side. Street parking is super easy and right out front. There are two session rooms, one has more windows but the other side is usually busier with more equipment. Bathrooms are clean. Luckily in 2017 my insurance has covered nearly 100 sessions of Therapeutic and Manual (I'll probably need another 100 in 2018), which is quite a lot. I haven't had to pay a single cent for anything. Guess it depends on your insurance. As for the complaint of not getting enough hands on care, step up and vocalize with your therapy leader what you want. They are very attentive and your sessions can be altered or tailored to fit your needs more, but it's not going to happen if you don't speak up or ask. So yeah, definitely check this place out if you're looking for a good PT place in Long Beach. Surely one of the best! Thanks for all the help. :) read more

This place is fantastic!!! I've been going here about 3 months now for shoulder rehab and I am so pleased with my progress. They have flexible scheduling, very friendly therapists and staff, and a very effective methodology. I've been to a few other PT places, but Select is hands-down the best. I look forward to coming here, which is saying a lot. PT Dana, Kenny, and Amanda are fun, responsive, kind, and knowledgeable. I've learned more from Dana about how and why my shoulder hurts and how it needs to be rehabilitated than I have from several doctors. I chose Long Beach Sports Rehab because of the Yelp reviews. I wasn't disappointed. Great people. That makes all the difference for me. They all knew their stuff, which I'd imagine you'd find anywhere you go, but taking the time to sincerely find out how their patients are doing, and just being nice people is what puts this place over the top. I feel a little bit like Brooks Hadley after he got paroled from Shawshank Prison -- I wonder if maybe I injured myself again (this time on purpose), I could go back and hang out a few more times. I keep telling myself, "I didn't know any better." This was the first time I had to have physical therapy, what a way to introduced. I had shoulder surgery and did about five and a half months of therapy there before I gave up and found someplace different. First problem was that a new, and I mean brand new out of school new began working on me. I get it he's new, I have been new to jobs also, but you do not throw a wet behind the ears kid in to physical therapy and have him start on a blown out shoulder. He was so timid and hesitant I was concerned. Then I get Kenny. He is a great guy, nice, funny, will tell you all sorts of stories and how good he is and jokes. But darnit, I am not there to laugh I am there to get better. Sorry I can't go on because I feel it's going to get personal, but I feel my success in recovery was not taken serious because I was an older man but every young pretty girl or boy that walked in there that was athletic they got all the attention every bit went to them. I had to ask for more hands on work, I had to ask for more to do, I had to ask to increase my workout, I had to ask thier opinion of my recovery. And under no circumstances should I be the guinea pig for a assistant in training. My time is important to me, do not leave me alone with someone who is still in school trying to figure out how to take my measurements and fill out a progress report. I took time out of work to get therapy not pay for someones training because the actual Physical Therapist is too busy making jokes and talking to the next pretty thing that just walked in the door. Just because I am older does not mean I don't need a good shoulder. Anyway, I went somewhere else and suggest you do the same. read more

Have received very fine physical therapy from Jim and Staff a few years ago. Am returning this time with for a different need. The group is very friendly, helpful and excellent in the service they provide. With the current public health concerns, everyone is wearing a face mask. In addition they have instituted appropriate social distancing and sanitation of the equipment following each person's use. Graduated from physical therapy today! Can't begin to thank everyone enough. Team 3 is awesome! Nicole, Jessica and EJ are amazing! I came in with lower back pain and spasms. They evaluated me and started me on an exercise program which they advanced as I progressed. They sent me home with a home exercise program which they updated at the end of my therapy to continue my workout regimen. They are very encouraging and made me look forward to coming to physical therapy. read more

I had 8 therapy sessions for my neck pain; each roughly 1 hour long. Each session was divided in as first 10 minutes having a hot pack on my neck (no involvement of therapist), another 20 minutes of self-exercises (again no involvement of therapist), 10 minutes of massage therapy (the only part that someone actually was working with me), 10 minutes of sitting on a chair and having an electric simulator on my neck (no involvement of therapist) and the final 10 minutes, having a cold pack on my neck (no involvement of therapist). So out of each 1 hour session, I was getting 15 minutes of therapist time. You won't believe that my insurance was billed $2486 ! (see the attached pic), out of which, I still need to pay $285 out of pocket. So I paid a $15 at the beginning as co-pay, then at the final session, I paid $187.50 and I thought it is over now. Then they sent me one bill for $52.50 and in less than a month later, another bill for 82.50 it is outrageous how they charge insurance for almost nothing. By the way, all those therapy did not help me at all. read more

Absolutely horrible. Poor management, I would say no management. This place doesn't even know what customer crevice is. If you care about your time, money and body, stay away from this nightmare place. They didn't help my back at all, only thing I got is warm or cold pack for my back, which I was already doing at home. At the end they send me a bill with services, which was not provided. The management didn't return non of my calls. I wish there would be a scale with negative stars...that is how bad that place is. read more

I can see that this place got excellent reviews from other folks, so I'm not sure how I ended up getting such poor service. Unfortunate, but I guess that happens sometimes. The team there is nice, to be sure, but when I went in for rehab for my broken ankle, the operation struck me as extremely unprofessional. [EDIT: Upon further inspection I have noted that some of the poorer (and probably perfectly legitimate) reviews have fallen under the "not recommended" section on this page. This is very unfortunate, as it doesn't allow for a fair sampling of customer satisfaction. I would recommend taking a look at some of those reviews as well.] Now, I couldn't have been more than three years older than most of the techs there, which wasn't a problem in and of itself. However, there's a keen difference between maintaining a relaxed, fun environment, and running an operation that feels too much like high school. Most of the techs were young college students, and clearly had no idea what they were doing. More than a couple interactions gave me this impression. They didn't know how to help me the second day I went (even after my initial evaluation, mind you) , so they called the physical therapist into the room. I had to wait a few minutes to receive his attention. Once he instructed both them and myself, I began my exercises. Once I finished those, I waited a couple minutes for the techs, most of whom were standing in the middle of the room, chatting with backs to their patients. One pair was chatting about how bored they had been. One said to the other, "If you're bored Friday night you should come to second street!" etc. etc. I had to wait a couple minutes for them to wrap up their conversation before they came back to the present and realized they were at work. I later spoke to the manager on the phone and told him that I was less than impressed by the lack of professionalism, and he attempted to defend the staff by informing me that most of the staff I had seen that day were college students in training to become physical therapists. I am a college student as well, but I am still able to act like a professional at work and provide the care my clients need. I have been in and out of numerous hospitals, doctor's offices, and physical therapy centers since I was a child, and I've never felt so uncomfortable with the quality of care I have received as I did at Long Beach Sports Rehab. I have now found another physical therapy center in Long Beach and am MUCH happier with it. I had been warned about this place. I should have listened. read more

This is the best (of several) physical therapy clinics I have ever been to. They use a team approach with each team comprised of a Physical Therapist, a Physical Therapist Assistant (also licensed by the state) and several Physical Therapy Aids and volunteers. The Aids are all students who have completed their undergrad degrees and are waiting to get into graduate PT programs which are extremely impacted and difficult to get into. The volunteers are generally undergrads finishing up degrees in things like exercise kinesiology who are required to do volunteer hours but they also seem to be trying to get a feel for the field and if they want to go into PT. I mention this because one of the many things I enjoy about this clinic is that it is a really strong and positive teaching environment. The Therapists and Assistants are always teaching the students and the students who have been around awhile are teaching then newer ones. The whole environment is extremely positive. I have spent approximately 60-70 hours there since the beginning of the year and I have never seen the staff be anything but kind and gentle with every single patient. They know their clients and are encouraging and attentive to everyone. My therapist, who is also the director of the clinic, is so sharp and knows exactly what is going on with me from session to session in terms of progress and setbacks, changes course accordingly and is a really nice person on top of it all. My only real job right now is getting back on my feet and because of this staff, from the front desk right on through to the newest volunteer creates a wonderful environment in which to heal. read more

I'm currently getting post-op rehab here. This is the fifth time I've had therapy here following surgeries, first for Rotator Cuff, twice following knee repairs and twice following TKR. I have requested my rehab be here after going to a few other places. The staff is professional in a relaxed atmosphere. Music plays in the background and everyone is friendly. The groups are broken into teams with two therapists and students that assist the therapists. This time I'm on Team 2. Valerie and Kenny have been awesome. Everyone on the team has been encouraging on my recovery. I'm 11 weeks post-op and saw my doctor. He is very pleased with my progress. This is a late review, but almost two years ago I tore my ACL and had reconstructive surgery to replace it. Afterward I came to physical therapy here for about four months and it was nothing short of fantastic. The people that work here are so kind and always pushed me to improve. I was given a short list of pt places from our insurance. I went to a couple in the past and care was really shoddy. Staff on their phones and you'd have to tell them that you were done with a set of exercises and they would forget what you already did. I read reviews and saw all the positive ones for Long Beach Sports Rehab and thought I'd would give it a shot. It's well maintained in an older building. Some days are super busy and others steady. What doesn't change is the high degree of care and professionalism of the staff.
