We have loved everything we've eaten here, but the Kabocha squash soup is definitely my favorite!!!

My wife had a taste for sushi and our 16 month old baby girl knocked out so I Yelp sushi bear me and gave me Sen, stoped in and order two rolls and 10 pieces of sushi for $62 bucks not bad!!!!! I know I know they say sushi has to be eaten like right there and then but our baby girl was sleeping. Great rolls and the sushi pieces were so fresh and yummy with the wasabi between the fish and rice yummy yummy yummy! The drinks looked good so we have to stop in next time and yes the place is super small but I think it's worth it. Thank you lady's. read more

This little Sushi bar was pretty fabulous, and I am glad it was a dinner decision my date (who lives in the area) picked out because it is small enough that if you were to blink you would miss it. The interior is very, umm, cozy, and I mean that is a good quaint kind of way. We came here at an odd hour but I am guessing it would be hell to get a table here if it was during a busy period. Other than the bar itself, there is only maybe 5 tables in the whole place. Beer and alcohol selection is limited here, but I was tired from walking around on a date all day so I was not all that picky anyway: "Bring me a cocktail, any cocktail." Attempting to be witty for hours on end to impress a girl is exhausting. The menu here is vast to accommodate most any taste, for sushi or otherwise, and the preparation is fresh and right in front of your eyes. I tried the kabocha soup as an appetizer and it was delicious. Nice hearty bits of crab and a very unique flavor profile. I went with salmon as entree as I literally just had sushi the day before, but my date fed me some of hers from across the table (cheesy, yes, I know) and I am glad I got to try some to compare and contrast with other places I have tried. My conclusion? Thus far, this is the best I have come across in Chicagoland since I moved here. Since I have only been here once I can't go into too much detail, but the Sushi I tried and can therefore recommend are firstly the ghost ship maki. This was tempura battered sushi with sweet potato, cream cheese, and spicy tuna. Soooooo yummy, especially with a little bit of Wasabi. This was one the best, if not the absolute best, maki rolls I have ever come across. The spider maki, which is made with soft shell crab, was also a winner! Service here was attentive and on point, though admittedly it would be hard to suck as a server when the place is so small. I will be back. read more

This place was recommended to me by a local Foodie, and they nailed it! I had the Dragon Maki and Boston Maki, and both were absolutely delicious. The perfect balance of perfectly cooked rice for starters, then the ingredients all melded together in a balanced blend of flavors and textures. Wow. Such quality sushi. I think I'm in love with this place. This place is a gem and I don't know why I've never been to it before. There is metered parking in the area which is a bit hard to find but the Oak Park blue line is nearby as well. The restaurant decor is very cohesive and the ambience is great. I appreciated that they had instrumental music playing instead of tacky top hits. The main star of the experience was the food. I came with my sister and we had the takoyaki ($7) as a starter. We had the kamikaze maki ($8), tiger maki ($12) and volcano maki ($12). For dessert we had the green tea crème brulee ($6), and all of that was enough for the both of us. The flavors were delicious, fresh and umami. The textures of the food and aftertaste were all perfect. The dessert was subtle but decadent. And afterwards, I felt satisfied without the guilty feeling of eating something heavy or gluttonous. I could go on and on about how delicious everything was, but what I'll say is that it was extremely reasonably priced and completely worth it. The service was very efficient- there were 5 sushi chefs- and the waiters were attentive without being too "in your face." I definitely will come again to explore more of the menu. read more

Really great quality food and value. Although you can expect to spend a little more than your average sushi restaurant, the food quality is amazing and definitely worth it. Since we're new to the neighborhood, we needed to find a decent sushi place. Came here for my husband's birthday for a small dinner with our small family (it's just three of us, the little one probably only counts as half LOL). The space is a little narrow, but I've found that a lot of the restaurants tend to be that way here. There's some bar seating, tables for groups of 4-ish, and a few chairs at the front of the restaurant looking out onto the street. The menu is fairly typical: nigiri, sashimi, maki rolls, and entrees. They also have wine and sake choices that looked good, but we didn't get to try any of it. Hubby got the sen spicy maki set, which comes with spicy tuna maki, spicy salmon maki, and a fire ocean maki (not sure what came in this). They were all good, since we love our spicy maki rolls! We got the udon kid's menu, and our son really seemed to enjoy his udon noodles. The soup was a little on the sweet side for me, since I prefer the umami flavors in Japanese cuisine. I got the nigiri platter, which came with the chef's selection of nigiri. The sushi was fresh, without any "fishy" taste or smell, and the sushi rice was legit. Sometimes I get nigiri where the sushi rice is all wrong (overcooked and too sticky, undercooked and crunchy, underseasoned, overseasoned, etc). You have to get your sushi rice perfect in order to have a legit nigiri! Anyway, good experience overall. We will definitely be coming back for our next sushi fix. read more

I have heard SO much about Sen Sushi over the years and *just* made it for a last minute girl-night. I had all of the anxiety of a highly anticipated blind date, which was probably my problem. I expected KA-BAM -pow- firework explosion. After all, this is supposed to be the best sushi place in Oak Park. In hind sight, I think it is the best sushi place in Oak Park, but I've experienced better in boarding town Forest Park (shout out to Fuji Grill). We were able to get free street parking pretty easily that Sunday evening and walked in and snagged the last available table (other than the sushi bar and the row along the front window). I felt kinda bad about that as groups of folks came in after us and had to stand right by us while we talked, ordered, and ate. It made me feel as if the waiting people were watching and timing us (probably all in my head). But yeah - Sen Sushi was clearly popular and also had no waiting area. The decor of Sen Sushi is really neat. It's small and rather modern and minimalistic, but really nice nonetheless. There are small, rectangular windows along the front that give out a distinct fish tank vibe. There were two servers that catered to the entire restaurant. We gave our order to one server and then the other one came by a few minutes later to see if she could take our order also. It was nice that they were on top of it. They also brought our food (and later our bill) in a timely manner. We ordered two bowls of miso soup, a house salad (surprisingly fancy and larger than what we expected), a red dragon roll, and a caterpillar roll - all beautifully presented. We both enjoyed our miso soup. My friend commented that Sen Sushi was generous with the stuff in the soup. It wasn't just broth with one or two chunks of green stuff and tofu. It was a lot more substantial than that. My friend also encouraged me to taste the dressing on the house salad. It was delicious and tasted a little like peanuts and ginger. The red dragon roll was a little spicy and really yummy; however, I preferred the caterpillar roll. We ate all of our food and were both wonderfully satisfied at the end of our meal. I was only disappointed that I didn't have enough room to order their green tea creme brulee! The bill came to about $40. I think that was reasonable for what we got. I really enjoyed my experience at Sen Sushi, but would probably sooner return to Fuji Grill instead. read more

I'm usually against writing a review after one visit. It doesn't feel right to judge a restaurant on one visit when there are so many factors that go into the whole dining experience. Plus I have never really felt so strongly about a dining experience to the point where it compelled me to yelp about it... until now. I basically picked this place cause I was craving crème brûlée and I was intrigued by their green tea infused crème brûlée. We started with edamame for appetizers. It was good.. I can't imagine anyone messing up edamame tho. As a formality, I ordered the miso sea bass bento box. The waitress brought us miso soup (and even offered one to my friend even tho he only ordered sashimi). I'm not exaggerating... I think this was the best miso soup I've ever had. There were pieces of tofu--soft, almost creamy texture-- and seaweed. Then it was time for the miso sea bass bento box. The salad was mixed greens with ginger peanut dressing. I'm not really into salad but the dressing was delicious & made the salad tolerable. I haven't had california rolls in forever (long story short: wasted the first years of my sushi obsession exclusively eating cali rolls and thus I no longer have room for them in my life) and was not looking forward to these ones... except they ended up being really good. Then I tried the sea bass... it was crazy... it literally melted inside my mouth... which hasn't happened since I had sea bass in Costa Rica 3 years ago. It was so unexpected.. especially for a place nowhere near a sea/ocean. After my meal, I didn't think I had room for crème brûlée. But then again, I drove all the way to Oak Park to try it... and it seemed silly to just give up... so I agreed to share it with my friend. Best decision ever. It was very good... tho I didn't really taste the infused green tea (too subtle??) but I'm not holding that against it. My only complaint--very minor-- was the lack of cucumber taste to my water when there were cucumbers floating in it. I was super excited when I saw the cucumbers and it was definitely a let down when it just tasted like plain water :( If you were too lazy to read all of the above, here's the gist: definitely one of my favorite meals of 2013 (I know it's only March, shut up) and cannot wait to go back! read more

Oh my gosh this place is incredible!!!! I have been to this restaurant steadily since I moved to Oak Park. My cousin and friends generally ask to go to Sen when they visit too. The sushi is phenomenal! I am a big fan of the Volcano Roll and the Dragon Roll. On a recent trip - what truly stood out was a squash bisque soup with crab. It was incredible. I also order drinks - my favorite being the Blushing Geisha. I am not normally a gin person but this drink is amazing. It's very refreshing and perfect for the summer. The food is also beautifully served. It looks like a work of art. The service is excellent, I seem to have the same servers each time I go and they are always pleasant and offer great suggestions. I am a big fan of sushi and I have to say this is one of my favorite places to go if not my very favorite. read more

I eat here at least once a week and have made my way through most of the maki and some other things. Here are some more menu suggestions: 1. Pumpkin-Crab soup (don't miss this one!) Oh heck yes. This soup is the best ever. It's perfectly seasoned and has such a complex flavor but comes across as simple. It dances on my tongue and warms my belly. Yummo! 2. Sen Staff Favorite Maki This is probably my favorite right now. Very fresh and full of tastiness. 3. Just order and my rolls were not good. I had Summer Maki, California and Fire Ocean Rolls. The Fire Ocean was cold and had more dough than fish! The California taste salty and the Summer Maki was the only roll I could eat. We tipped the delivery guy prior to delivery and he left our order downstairs in the hallway. Horrible! read more

Like Ol' Dirty Bastard once so brilliantly put it, "Oh baby I like it rawwww!" A hefty portion of sashimi, with six different types of fish, plus shrimp, and octopus for $28? That's a steal, if you ask me. Though I wasn't a fan of the darker one on the plate (see my pic), it was still worth every dollar. The fish tasted extremely fresh and very tasty, with or without slathering it in soy or other sauces. The ginger roll, I don't remember the exact name, was equally amazing too. Though I felt the rice was SLIGHTLY undercooked. I would still order this again though because the taste was spot on and a very unique combination of flavors. Yasss. Now, why did I subtract one star? Two reasons- A. When I first walked in as a brave solo diner, I saw an open single-seat at the bar. I asked the hostess if I could sit there since I was alone. She literally laughed and said, "I guess." Ummm, sweetie, don't make me use my bugei skills on you! Rude as sh*t. I later saw her drop and shatter two glasses and got bitched at for it. I laughed under my breath and thought, "Karma"! B. My server, though super sweet & pretty, totally forgot my glass of wine. When it was time for me to pay, I guess she had already rung it up, and without me mentioning it, she apologized and took it off the bill. She made up for it though because right when I was about to leave, she brought me a tea cup with a lid and said quietly, " what I forgot is in the cup." What? Vino to-go? What a "happy ending" indeed! LOL. I'm horrible. Sen is, hands down, the best sushi restaurant I've been to in Chicago-land. Go! You will not regret it. read more

We did an impromptu trip to Sen Sushi on a late-ish Saturday evening, that was under our radar for a while to stop in and actually try. We ordered a Takoyaki, Spicy Salmon Maki, Red Dragon Maki, Volcano Maki, and Demon Maki. Our definite favorites were the Takoyaki, Volcano Maki, and Demon Maki. The Takoyaki has big bits of octopus inside in which many restaurants tend to be stingy on. I would say this is definitely one of my favorite place to grab Takoyaki, however, it is a little pricey than usual - $7 for 4 pieces. The Volcano Maki is very much a flavorful maki, it has a small kick of spiciness to it, but definitely wasn't something that is too spicy to handle. The Demon Maki, was definitely my favorite, I love the flavor of the smokyness from the torched fish and the sweet and savoriness of the Maki, where it's not too overpowering. The Spicy Salmon was more on the plain side and nothing special. The Red Dragon Maki's presentation was awesome, however, it didn't really stand out as much as the Volcano and Demon Maki in terms of flavor, but wasn't bad either. Overall, the place is very small - (5) four seat tables, and about 12 individual stools - (8) at the bar and (4) at the window. The fish are definitely on the fresher side than most sushi place. The service is great, packed with about five sushi chefs behind the counter. It has become a definite favorite date night spot for us! read more

I usually give reviews if I've been to a restaurant at least two or three times, but this is one of those rare places that deserves 10 stars, regardless of how many times I'll try it, plus it's my 200th review. Sen Sushi is a far drive, but we finally decided to give it a try one early Saturday evening. I think we arrived around 6 or 7 pm and were able to get the last table available. It's a fairly small restaurant, so come early or be prepared to wait because they do not take reservations and the restaurant is packed all night long. We got the 12pc Nigiri entree (chef's selection) and two other rolls: Spicy Tuna and Sen Maki. Sen Maki is Shrimp tempura, Scallion, fire torch scallop, Squid, lime juice, Cilantro, Lemongrass reduction and it was amazing!! I've had plenty of sushi in my life, from countless restaurants but nothing has been as good, fresh, and flavorful as this. The fish is so fresh that it literally melts in your mouth... Like I said, we've only been there once but we both CANNOT wait to go back and try other rolls. They are a bit pricey, but it's damn worth it. My only "negative" remark is that it will be hard to eat anywhere else. I know this to be true because my fiance and I have compared Sen Sushi to every place we've been to since and they all are 2-3.5 stars compared to this.... read more

I took a few friends here a few weekends ago and we were all very impressed. It's a very small spot, but very nice. The sushi was fresh / tasted really good and the waitstaff was very attentive and accommodating. The three of us split a big platter -I believe it was called The Coast. Plenty of maki for all of us, plus we each ordered miso soup! We all had a really good time and were so psyched to have found a cute little hidden gem which is near where some of my friends live as well as not too far from where I work! This restaurant is fantastic! We called ahead, they don't accept reservations, but they will 'write your name down'. We waited there for a long time, but it was well worth the wait. The waitstaff knew that we were waiting and served us some green tea, we thought that was very thoughtful of them! The waitstaff was attentive to our needs, were very friendly and a pleasure to tip =). We ordered up a sashimi and nigiri special- the sashimi was phenomenal and beautifully prepared. We may make an extra trip to Oak Park just to go here. It's a small location which means you may need to wait a while to sit. We came in just after 6p on Saturday night and just had to wait briefly to get a spot. We did see a ton of carry out go by. We had the ghost, spicy salmon, and Salsa. We highly recommend the ghost however, all of it was exceptional. We also tried the green tea creme brûlée which was so good that we really can't figure out how to describe.
