Pretty average coney island. Have stopped in a few times for lunch during work. It's a bit busier but sometimes the service has been painfully slow. They have a wide menu to choose from. My first visit here was some 25+ years ago. It was a favourite back then and it remains so today. This is a 'diner' restaurant, and they certainly have more than Coney Island style hot dogs available. My favorite mealtime here is breakfast. I always get a hearty meal to start my day, but as summertime approaches, I might try to slim down a bit and order a lighter meal (I never do, but you never know - it might happen). They currently close at 4pm during the M-F work days, so I have to hustle for a meal to eat before going home for the day. Good meals every time I visit, and their service is always on point. I work locally and have been coming here almost weekly for a handful of years now. It's always been a little pricey but the food was always good. When I first started coming here they had their own blend of bbq sauce which was amazing and really is what kept me coming back. Then COVID hit and they understandably had to switch it up to due to the company who made it for them having to shut down ( this is the story from a waitress at the time) Well after things loosened up and I started going back it's now under new ownership and the place seems a little cleaner on the inside but the BBQ sauce is absolutely disgusting. Good food, good (but slow when busy) service. Free parking. Waitress had a huge area to cover during very busy Sunday brunch. We were a large party with 3 seniors, 2 adults, a 4 year old and a 20 month old baby. We each ordered a different breakfast item. I enjoyed my spinach tomato onion feta omelet sided made with egg whites instead of whole eggs (upcharge $1.45) with hash browns and a delicious biscuit instead of toast. Everyone in our party was happy with their food. The kitchen was backed up (very very busy brunch service) so not all of each order arrived at the same time, but our egg dishes were received hot and freshly made, not cold!!! We used plastic ware because the dishwasher wasn't fast enough to handle the demand. I would return. Our relatives who live close by have this place on regular rotation for weekend brunch. Got a very large carry out for my coworkers and myself. They made each order correctly and it was packed up perfectly down to the salt and pepper. Only downside was there wasn't a receipt with a price break down, and their menu online the prices seemed to be out of date. Other then that food was fresh and hot and very impressed with the carry out. read more

My husband and I came here to get breakfast, because it was rated the highest out of the coneys in the area. When I walked in the restaurant smelled like a musty old folks home plus frying oil. The waitress was pleasant and did a nice job, she only came two or three times to our table. The food was the nastiest food I've ever ever had from Coney Island. I sort of feel bad saying it, but everything had a rancid oil taste, even the pancakes, which were somehow bitter and burnt tasting. I ordered bacon, hashbrowns, and pancakes, it looked fine, but tasted old, not fresh, burnt, even though it was not visibly blackened, so I'm thinking there must've been a chemical or old oil on the grill. I give it 4 stars for consistency, and quality. I like breakfast, Particularly omelettes. The art of stuffed omelettes is lost now days. People mix up ingredients, ads eggs and cook it together. In my opinion, an omelette is thin egg, with stuffing insides with cheese. Senate does that well! Service is always fast, the restaurant is clean, and they have good Lemon Rice soup, available daily. This month, for their 80year Anniversary, they are offering $1 Coney dogs. Which are really good. Gyro meat is real gyro meat too. Not out of a frozen box. read more

First of all let me tell you how disgusting Senate Coney Island is and how the stench of it reminds me of a sewer. Second, let me tell you about my findings in my food. I'm sitting down eating, and while sending my fork into my could have been much better meal, I noticed a piece of metal. I called the waitress over to which she went over to the owner who was sitting at the counter eating her own meal to tell her. You would think the owner would take a break from indulging in her I'm sure perfect meal, but no, she kept sitting there. After being offered $1.00 off of my meal, I then decided it was time to approach the owner. After informing her that I would not be a returning customer and that I'll never come back, she literally told me that it was a slap in the face to her that I said that, and that I insulted her establishment. Of course I reminded her how insulting it was to me that she never took her fork out of her food to approach me even to apologize. If you think all of that is bad, he following response just topped off my horrible experience. Do you know that she literally told me to kiss her ass? Yup! She told me to kiss her ass. Let me just express how classless the owner is and how insulting it is to even have her categorized as customer service representative. Being the owner of an establishment you are responsible for providing the best customer service representing your business. As I stated before, I WILL NOT be returning to Senate and I DO NOT recommend anyone to visit this nasty place. read more

Best breakfast around there staff is very friendly and they know you after just a couple visits. Love this Coney Island. One thing I don't like is when I order fries to go and they put them in a wax bag instead of a styrofoam container and it makes them really greasy. I wait every week for Fridays! They have the best Mac n cheese I have ever had. It's so nice and creamy with the golden brown melted cheese on top is mixed in. Ordered a tuna melt and it was bad. They actually grill the tuna, the stuff from a can. They mix the mayo and canned tuna and then cook it?!? After doing this to the tuna, it turn this strange grayish color. So yes the bread is supposed to be grilled but not the tuna. Very unappetizing. read more

Sooo, it's been a long while since I posted a review. I got kinda sick of the negativity that seems to go along with most reviews, especially when it comes to new places. Sometimes it takes a place a few months to get its footing. No need to dump on them and kill their business just as they are starting out. I've been guilty of being too negative in the past and am trying to change. Senate Coney Island has been around for a while, though. They should have their game all squared up. There was honestly no excuse for how disappointing my lunch was today. I got the Chicken Yeros dinner. It came with choice of soup or salad and rice or fries. I chose salad and fries. Salad came out. Imagine the saddest salad you've ever seen. Now steal that salad's brand new bike. That's how sad this salad was. We're talking a simple pile of chopped iceberg with 2 tiny pieces of cucumber and tomato on top. Even a bagged salad mix has some carrot and cabbage bits. This had none of that. My meal came out with the fries. They were not worthy of the name. Unless they were cut from the tiniest spuds known to man, I think I got the bottom of the frozen fry bag. There wasn't a single fry over two inches long and the majority were under an inch long. They were potato bits fried to a crisp. I ate them with a fork. My Gyro dinner wasn't what I was expecting, but I think that's my fault. It was made with a chicken version of Gyro meat. If I had gotten a grilled chicken pita then I think it would have been what I was looking for. So that one is on me. For what it was, thin strips of chopped and formed chicken, fried on a grill and served with a pita, I guess it was OK. And the tzatziki was good. All in all it was disappointing. Seemed like several easy things were woefully inadequate. A side salad and fries. It's hard to screw those up, but screw them up they did. read more

Food is good. However, you should call before you go there to see if they're open. Sign on the door says the hours are 7am-2pm. They close when they want to. Twice, I've gone there about 1:00 and lights are off. You can see the staff moving around inside. Guess they don't need the business if they close early. If they're going to close at 1:00, it would be a good idea to change the hours on the door. I've seen other cars pull up as well. Maybe the hours should be 7am to whenever we feel like leaving. Place has gone downhill since Mark left. One of the staff, Michelle, must be related to someone in charge. She's a pice of work...not in a good way. Been to this Senate many times back in the days before Yelp!, but not much lately. Well, I went once again today and can truthfully say I'm still a fan!!! :) I had a Small Greek Salad with Chicken on top. At first, I was kind of hesitant to order it as the salad with chicken added was $7.50ish. But it HIT THE SPOT! The salad, loaded with greek olives, feta cheese, beets, onions, tomatoes & pepperoncinis hit the spot - the dressing which came on the side was simply amazing. The chicken was a little dry, but once dipped in the greek dressing, was really good and seasoned just right. It also came with a warm piece of awesome tasting Pita bread. :) This place has some serious turnover at lunch due to the Ford crowd like myself, but is always quick. The waitresses are seasoned veterans and know how to please their customers. Overall, a great place to eat and best yet, they have a bit of everything!!!! read more

I went to this location becasue it was just after a traing class down the street. I know everybody asks, "Who's is better? American or Lafayette? I rated them both the same four stars. Well here's the tiebreaker. I'm partial to Senates because I went to the original restaurant on Michigan Ave. and Livernois(no longer there) years ago(1976 and beyond). They have the best wieners, grilled with the right amount of dark brown skin all around. The french fries are hand made every day. Stop in and say hi to the potato guy. I call him Spuds. At this location they actually call him Timmy. These are the best of all the coney restaurants. Straight up fries, chili fries, with cheese....you name it, they're the best. I eat my coneys with light onions, smothered in mustard. I put mustard on my fries. Coneys for breakfast, coneys for lunch, coneys for dinner. Oh, and just to eat a little healthy I added a dinner salad with ranch dressing. It was okay. I'm in heaven!!! read more

I basically love all Coney Islands. Especially when they are fast, efficient, and clean. This Coney Island is all three. This crew works lightning fast. My average wait time from ordering to receiving food is 5 minutes. Seriously. Things are a better too since they annexed another dining room. Like most Coney Islands, Senate is not meant for people with health conditions, especially not cardiovascular. You can easily stuff your face for under $10. My favorites: coney dog light onions, gyro, lemon rice soup, bowl of chili, french fries, chili fries, or greek salad. For a medium appetite like mine, lemon rice soup + coney dog + share fries is enough food. 2 coneys if I were 22 years old again. read more

Quick recap: a coney is an all beef vienna style hot dog made with natural casings served in a bun with chili mustard and onions topped in that order. It started in Jackson Michigan during World War I. The chili is generally made from beef hearts with some tomato and pepper, spices, onion, chili powder and water and cooked for hours. Senate used to be on Michigan Avenue just west of Livernois on the north side of the street. My parents used to dine there when they were dating in the 1950's. Decades later, Senate opened the Livonia, then Dearborn locations and then SOLD the Detroit location to a man who ran it under the same name for a few years with the same original menu, without even eradicating the others owned from the list. He ran it for a few years and then it burned to the ground. This was probably 1997-1998ish. Fast forward to 2015. Senate has been in the family for over 60 years. They started in Detroit. They have made their way to several suburban locations. They do an absolutely whopping business and they do a huge volume. Senate is for the most part very clean and the food is for the most part very consistent. When you do the kind of volume they do, you its ok to miss a beat here and there. That's ok. Let's talk food. The Coney's are the main attraction. If you are not from Michigan, you simply don't get it. See my review on Lafayette Coney Island. That tells the story. For you Detroit natives, Senate is the west side's answer to National Coney Island on the other side of town. Don't give me Kerby's Abe's or Leo's. They're all pretty good. Don't take it personally. It's a west side thing. The Senate Coney's are some of the best in town. They are leaders in making Greek salads and like always they are served with a pita. Do you like pie? Senate has great pies! Ask for lemon merengue. You'll love it. Do you like to go out for breakfast? They serve that too! great selection of breakfasts and lots of menu items to choose from. First Experience Me and four other people at work ordered from here and went to pick up. I got the gyro dinner with chili fries and a side salad. Although the gyro meat was pretty good they forgot to give me the bread for the sandwich... and the salad dressing for my salad. So I had a pile of lettuce and some gyro meat. Chili fries were ok, could use better quality fries and maybe add some cheese. I'll probably go again though and try the Coney, see how that stacks up but so far pretty disappointing. Second Experience Ordered a steak sandwich and the chili cheese fries. Don't know why I ordered the fries they were just as mediocre as before. Tried the steak sandwich and it was awful, came on a hamburger bun and a side of A1 steaksauce. My family and I go through restaurant cycles. Whenever we're going out for dinner, we go to the same place for several weeks (months.. years..) until we get tired of it and pick someplace new. I do the exact same thing with CDs in my car . . . Anyhow, Senate Coney was one such place when I was in middle and high school. The place is mostly clean and it's typical coney food. The best part is watching the cooks -- my dad and I had a favorite guy that we liked to watch: we both thought he looked like a character actor for the X-files. One of the guys who believes in UFOs or got struck by lightning or has some kind of weird power that Scully doesn't believe in. If you go and you're an X-Files fan, watch for this guy -- you'll immediately spot him. I like their gyros, bacon cheeseburgers and their chili cheese fries. It used to be that the smoking section was badly partioned and the entire restaurant was smokey when one table was smoking, but that's no longer a problem. read more
