Telway is a longtime Detroit staple. If you want a fast, cheap, and greasy meal, you can't go wrong. 4-Pack Hamburger ($5.49) - Soft griddled burgers with a streak of pink through the center served with ketchup, mustard, soft onion and pickle, then steamed with the pillowy bun. Not as greasy as some of the other slider joints around. The patty itself is quite small and only fills maybe 2/3 of the bun. It's the most classic Detroit slider. Two, or maybe 2.5 of these is similar to a normal sized burger. Not really much else to say, if you go here, you know what you're in for. I mean, it's not the best food around, but sometimes you just want something fast and easy to eat.

Best sliders ever. Been going there for 60 years. They even have great deep fried hot dogs.

It's been 30 years since I've been here and they are still the best of the best. Great Food. Excellent coffee. Great customer service A+ All the Way....

I can't believe the place is still here after all of these years. There are 2 types of subs here: Italian, and "Other Subs", so you know that this shop sprang from the vibrant Italian community that once populated Detroit. The Italian Subs at Gonella's are ordered according to how many layers it builds up (which I think is a unique concept). These layered Gonella Italian Subs are layered with a variety of Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Mortadella, Smoked Ham and Capicola), provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions & Gonella's homemade dressing. Soft sub buns, tons of stacks of meat, lettuce and tomato or not. No one goes hungry after a sub here. Some deli spots tend to skimp on the protein, but not this place. My team members favorite is the Italian, 6 stacks. I usually will go for a turkey or chicken stack. They offer up to 18 stacks, haven't tried that yet.

Now for the food - We got a few meats--turkey pastrami, corned beef and a "wildcard" (I let the staff pick, and whatever it was it was good). We also got the special spices etc. I do prefer a more of an Italian sandwich on a hard roll, so I'm not sure the soft onion roll is for me. If you like a cold sandwich un-toasted and generally basic with a bit of a twist, you will love this! My husband and I enjoyed the sandwich (split it, and they put mayo on half at my request). It's a charming spot, quality food and I'm glad we tried it. Skip the spicy potato salad. It was bland, sadly.

I talked to John Lambert, one of the new owners, and he said the original owner, Yvet Muftari had stayed on for 3 months after the sale of the restaurant to share the recipes and train the staff to insure continuity of food and service. Today was the first breakfast I had from Mike's. I ordered a half order of eggs, ham, and toast. It was huge. I asked John what is the difference between a half and whole order, and he said the ham circles the entire plate. OMG! Check out the pic. I got lucky today and got a double yolker. I understand Mike's still makes the mile high ham sandwiches with that extra slab of ham on top. Of course, the bean and split pea soup are incredibly good, too. If you've never eaten at Mike's, you're really missing out. Give it a try and you'll understand why "famous" is in the name.
