I have been looking after my aunt (almost 95 and was at a nursing home, after a stroke, in Torrance) remotely. At the beginning of this month, she had an episode that landed her in a hospital. I wanted to have her discharged back to the nursing home with a hospice care and was told that the nursing home routinely works with a large national hospice. I preferred a smaller local hospice and found Ziba Hospice on Yelp. It was a Saturday, but I was able to talk to a nurse & the Administrator and completed the paperwork. They then supplied extra data the nursing home requested before signing the contract. The whole team gave me and my aunt the priceless gift of their time and kind/compassionate care, taking care of tasks I could not perform due to my not being there, and keeping me updated of her status on an ongoing basis. My aunt passed away last Sunday. I am very grateful that she and I experienced the calm/compassionate presence and support of the Ziba Hospice team during the last part of her journey.

In April 2025, my mom suffered a massive stroke. She was placed under Continuous Care (CC), which meant she required critical, around-the-clock nursing support. We were told her case would be re-evaluated after three days. However, the care was stopped in less than 24 hours and we were given only 4 hours' notice that services would be discontinued. At that point, it was clear our needs no longer aligned with Faith & Hope's philosophy of care. We scrambled to hire private help on extremely short notice. That night, my mom was in significant pain & experienced agitation. She needed her medication adjusted and an increase of the dosage frequency to help manage her symptoms. The next day, we made final attempts to Faith & Hope to reassess mom's eligibility for CC, even though the on-call night nurse, when we asked, did acknowledge that we were free to seek another hospice provider. We waited all day for a response from Faith & Hope, but heard nothing. Faced with another evening without adequate care, we transferred my mom to a different hospice. They gave us the right care without hesitation. Sadly, our mom passed away only 4 days later. The only positive experience we had with Faith & Hope was with Nurse Theresa. She cared for my mom with compassion, dedication and a true commitment to patient advocacy. Theresa's thoughtfulness and support helped guide my brothers and me through an incredibly challenging time, and for that we are deeply grateful.

She is young, yet mature and knowledgeable beyond her years; sweet, loving, and caring, yet relentless and firm, selfless and giving, yet wise and highly ethical. Watching her care for my sister, I realize that unlike most people, Christina genuinely and altruistically practices nursing for the good of her patients, quietly and steadfastly, never missing even the smallest detail that would make a difference in giving comfort and care. It was never about Christina, or about how good or caring she can demonstrate herself to be. It was all about her sick and afflicted patient. I keep pinching myself, wondering if I was really that lucky to have had such a nurse assigned to us. In everything she does, Christina combines expertise and humility, never bragging about how much she knows, or how good she is. I see it in the way she administers medication, how she bathes my sister, making sure to clean every inch of her body while avoiding to distress her. I could go ad infinitum about Christina, but will sum up with a quote from a French ecclesiastic, Jean-Baptiste Lacordaire, "Real excellence and humility are not incompatible one with the other, on the contrary, they are twin sisters." True Care Hospice is very fortunate to count Christina among its nursing staff, and our family is blessed to have met and received care from our beloved nurse Christina. She gives true meaning to the term hospice, and perhaps should be in charge of training newly arrived hospice nurses. More Christinas will make this a better world.
