I have a love/hate relationship with this particular branch. Pros: 1. Conveniently located at Ala Moana Shopping Center. 2. Two entrances/exits on opposite sides of the store (it's awesome not to have to go allll the way around past either Longs Drugs or Harry Winston, or even to cut through VS). 3. Employees are attentive and usually able to answer any questions you may have about pretty much anything in the store. Cons: 1. Whenever I go here, there's always at least one thing on my shopping list that is out of stock or hasn't even arrived in stock yet. I can understand the latter situation to an extent (due to the time it takes to ship anything to Hawaii) but it's extremely frustrating not to find certain beauty "staples" that, IMO, should always be available to purchase in-person (such as: non-limited edition tweezers, face powders, mascaras). 2. This Con ties into Pro #3 - although the employees are helpful, you usually need to hunt them down to receive service, especially when it's a weekend or holiday. You have to take the initiative to get what you want in this store... and to speed up the process, you should probably already know what you want (which might put a damper on some customers' shopping experience - but - personally, I'm not one to window shop or mindlessly browse the aisles in a makeup store). 3. On the other hand, when it's a slow time in the store and there's hardly any foot traffic, you'll pretty much bump into practically every single sales associate there. I don't mind being asked the same question over and over again by different people (if I need help with anything, am I looking for anything in particular, etc., etc.). However - one of my pet peeves when shopping anywhere is when a SA approaches me to say: "Just to let you know, the store is closing in XX minutes." I didn't ask. I'm clearly wearing a watch. And it's closing in twenty minutes, not ten or even five minutes. (this happened last night, btw). All in all, I find myself shopping at Sephora.com muchmuchmuch more than the actual in-person store. This can be kind of annoying sometimes due to their "free shipping with a minimum $50 purchase" policy, simply because I don't always want to spend at least $50. Sephora is my go to store for all my makeup needs. It's not just their selection that is awesome but their service. I'm always greeted when I walk in. Most of the time, I actually don't wear makeup. I mainly wear makeup for cosplay. I'm pretty sure that most of the time that I go in, I don't look like someone that would spend money at Sephora. That has never stopped them from asking me if I need help. I'm so happy that they don't treat me like I'm not worth their time which is how Macy's makes me feel. I always feel valued and beautiful when I go to Sephora. This time I was looking for a new eyeshadow brush, a bright colorful eyeshadow palette, and face wipes. I was unable to find the wipes I was looking for and I'm sure I looked lost trying to find it. Someone came up to me and asked me if I needed help. I explained how it looked but totally forgot the brand. So she walked around half the back section to find it for me. We found it. It was clinique pep start wipes. I had totally walked right pass it while looking by myself. The other two were easy to find and I declined any help when asked by another employee. At the register, the girl complimented my bag and was very friendly. I was able to use my Beauty Insider points to get something too. I love their rewards program. Wow, I'm surprised by all of these not-so-great reviews. I've never been treated poorly at this location and have been coming regularly for over five years. I always find that the staff is helpful without being too pushy, and they'll check in occasionally, but they don't hover over me... which is nice :) But today was so great that I just feel the need to review and give a shout out to Michael who was a Murad rep from LA. BEAUTY is in the eye of the beholder. In this case, I went to buy my facewash to help me look presentable to all the beholders in the world. I would have to say Sephora must be the mecca for the females in the world for make up, perfumes, make up accessories, etc. In the midst of all the make up, brushes, perfumes, samples, and lotions, it seems strange there would be a section devoted to guys. But low and behold, it seems that some guys do care about looking and smelling presentable. The weird thing for me when I come to this store is having to pass through the make up sections in order to get to the guy's section, located in the rear of the store. I have things down to a science though, I just pick up my facewash (the only thing I ever buy in this store), head straight for the cashier, and I'm out in 5 to 10 minutes depending on the line. I have a love hate relationship with Sephora. Being a girl, I obviously wear makeup often. I have my day makeup and night makeup. Having makeup is handy and gives girls a lot more confidence in their look. BUT it can be very costly. There is so much different makeup we use and each product can cost from $10-$60... BOOOOOOOOOO This adds up super fast because usually when I go in for makeup its because I need a few things, not just one. The staff here is sometimes helpful and others times not. I don't blame them however for not knowing what specific product will help me with what I want. There are just SO MANY products and brands here. So if I ask an associate that isn't sure I don't take it out on them. I couldn't imagine working here and having so much product knowledge. The great thing about Sephora is they don't just sell makeup, they sell brushes, nail polish, skin care, perfume, etc. This is very helpful so I don't have to go to multiple places when I do my errands. Sephora is one of my most favorite stores. I love the fact that I can go to the store and literally touch and feel all the cosmetics. The sales associates are usually very helpful as well. You're also able to get samples just by asking. Last time I was in I was looking for a good face primer and I wasn't sure which one would work well with my skin. The sales associate suggested two that he thought would go well with my skin needs and gave me a sample of each to take home. I also love the fact that if you order online there is free shipping and free samples with every order. They also have amazing gift sets during the holidays. read more

I love going to Sephora for all my make-up needs but they seriously need to either train their staff better or hire new people that know what the heck they are doing!! It's sad because this store has a endless amounts of different make-up lines, yet the staff are clueless about MAKE-UP!!!! In fact, I went in one time looking for a new foundation and typically they will come to you and ask if you need help finding anything, but I actually had to go up to the girl and ask her for help (even though she was right next to me and knew that I was clearly confused on what color shade foundation to try on). I was interested in the Make up Forever HD foundation and asked the girl if she could help me find which shade I was. She seriously looked like a deer in headlights and seemed to have no clue what she was doing because she literally had to try on 5 different shades on me and still couldn't figure it out. Unfortunately it's not stroller friendly or kid friendly. I asked a staff member about a product that the store posted this week on Facebook and she had no idea what I was talking about. I met a great lady sponsoring the Farmacology brand but the store is so busy it gave me anxiety!! I would've loved to receive more information about classes or mini makeovers but no one offered that information even though you see signs for it all over the mall! I love Sephora but their SAs are hit or miss. Some are really nice and some are just downright awful. I spent plenty of money over the years so its not like I just come in to look, usually its to buy. Their absolute WORST SA is this old grey haired Asian lady in their fragrance department. This was my first time actually purchasing products at any kind of makeup store because I am pretty much new to putting on any sort of makeup. Needless to say, I was a little nervous and self-conscious going in, but the lady who greeted me at the door was very welcoming and put me at ease. They were having free mini skincare/makeup sessions, so I decided to take advantage of both. My skincare consultant was Laurie, and I loved loved loved her! She gave me recommendations based on my skin type and preferences. She explained every single product in detail and walked me through the steps of the Laneige skincare routine. I'm assuming I asked some very obvious questions (since I'm totally new to all this), but she was so so patient with me. Excellent customer service. For my mini makeup session, I was referred to a younger mua. She would do one part of the makeup like putting on the eyeshadow and give me time to try it out myself on my other eye. She was very patient with me as well and encouraged me to keep blending and trying! I walked out with a whole basket full of new makeup and skincare and I was really happy with my first makeup haul. I've been using the samples that my skincare consultant packed for me even without having to ask. She actually gave them to me while I already moved on to my makeup session, and I was so nice of her to take care of me even after she was done being my skincare consultant. Excellent experience, quick and painless. I was worried about experiences anywhere during COVID 19 since I've seen places understaffed with non attentive employees, or seemingly less quality than they were previous. I just wanted to write a review because I think if anything Sephora has stepped up their game during COVID19. They have always been helpful and nice, but from entry to exit the girl up front was helpful and friendly, and the associate Julia was very nice and explained a lot of things I had questions about. It was clean and safe too, as she grabbed my products for me and there was clear spacing signs (and seemed like they tried to facilitate the amount of people going in and out). Got my answers and made quick purchase decisions, and was able to exit in less than 10 minutes with 5 products. Thanks for a good experience! I came to this sephora specifically for the latest Nars longwear foundation. After doing research online, I made decided to stop by and see what shade of foundation would best match my complexion because every time I order foundations or any face product online, it's completely off from what is swatched in photos or description of the product. I'm sorry, I'm not certain on the man that helped me but it started with an L and he did a fabulous job and accommodating me or any questions and recommended what products would be best for my skin type. I'd give four or five stars just for his customer service. I had a negative check out experience though. The girl that rang me up wasn't paying attention to me at all, she asked me if I wanted to use my points on any products, but I told her I wanted to save it and afterwards, I feel like I lost her attention. She was talking to the other worker ringing another customer up and I was using my card and all she said was my total and to swipe my card. Like, I'm spending my hard earned money on products and your store and you don't even care to acknowledge me is horrid. I asked her a question on whether it mattered or not if my card was debit or credit and she turned around and fiddled with products behind her. You should be aware of your customer, and atleast answer any questions they have. read more

Ruined what was supposed to be a fun and relaxing stop. Let me preface the rest of this by saying I'm the kind of shopper that wants for the most part to be left alone... I hurried to check out and left the store sooner than I had wanted to because I was so sick of dealing with the salespeople. I wanted to get a tool, check out a foundation in person that I had scoped out online and peruse stuff I had on my loves list. I was dragged into my makeup getting wiped off and redone poorly and getting unsolicited skincare advice from a girl with a full face of obvious caked on foundation. Another lady tried to upsell me on a completely unrelated product I was not at all interested in - she took my hand and applied the product to it in her schpeel- then had two other employees ask if I needed help. I was in there no more than 30-45 minutes total. So uncomfortable. I guess I'll stick to my usual online shopping. read more

Went to Sephora yesterday to grab some perfume. They do not have testers out or anything to sample the scents due to COVID. There are just boxes, so for certain perfumes it's hard to distinguish which is which. Chanel Chance being an example. Anyway, I grabbed the wrong bottle, completely my fault for not properly checking. So today I had to return for an exchange and let me tell you. Every single employee in that place is amazing. The best service I have received during all this craziness. But I really want to thank the cashier for being so friendly and helpful and especially for not making me feel bad about my mistake. I tried checking my receipt for his name but I can't find it. I will leave my receipt reference number and a description in hopes that maybe he can get some type of recognition because he surely deserves it. He had semi curly hair with a darker skin tone. Receipt #43082. He had even seen the amount I spent the day before and asked if they had given me a tote bag. I hadn't so he gave me one. It's the little things, the fact that he took the time to check. Anyway Sephora, please do something special for your employees, especially the ones who worked today. Almost gave 2 stars because there are a couple very nice more experienced customer service ladies who offer to try things on me when the business is slow and who thanks us for standing in line etc. BUT MOST OF THE TIME - I feel unappreciated. I have to hunt someone down to ask a question and they act like you are BOTHERING them with your business. Then, the other day, a bunch of employees came from the back room towards the front and rudely bumped my mother (who walks with a cane mind you, so she's already having a hard time balancing) and my mother says politely "Oh I'm sorry, excuse me" and the employee GRUNTS LIKE A EFFIN ANIMAL and continues on her way past. I wanted to grab her by the arm and and scream EXCUSE ME??!?! but I was so done with this store I walked out and ordered online instead. OH YOU CAN'T SAY, "that's okay" or what you should've said was "omg no no I AM SORRY, are you okay?" My mother spends a lot on skincare and doesn't deserve that! If a girl on the street had bumped me or a friend and grunted like an animal I would've already been livid, but from a EMPLOYEE of a store that I am a patron of?? DO YOU ALLOW THAT? Do you train your employees to be decent human beings to your customers? Let alone the handicapped or do you allow them to discriminate? I too have felt stalked in this store because I look younger than I am, and I felt this worse so during high-school when I was beginning my makeup journey. Although I'm not super girly, I do love shopping and browsing at Sephora. I love that there are samples of everything that you can try before committing to a purchase. I've come here a few times for the 45 minute makeover. The makeup artists have been great at determining the look I'm going for, choosing and recommending products for me, and applying my makeup way better than I can. I always learn something new about application or products during the makeover. I think I've done makeovers at this particular location twice and I was very happy both times. On my most recent visit, my bestie came along and had her makeup done, too. I was literally ooh-ing and ah-ing over her glittery eyeshadow all night. When I come to browse or shop, it's great that there seem to be plenty of salespeople nearby offering help, if I want it. But if I just want to be left alone to poke around, they seem to be cool with that, too. Sephora is going to be more expensive than drugstore makeup but I feel like it's often worth it, especially for products where shade and quality are really important. For example, I've bought MANY foundations, lipsticks, and other products at the drugstore, thinking I was saving money, only to be disappointed and unable to return it. Having a salesperson help me determine the shade of foundation and best brand/formula for me has saved me frustration and likely money, in the long run. read more

I've been to two other Sephora's on the island and never had any problems. Every time I asked someone for help they always come through whether they are enthusiastic about it or not. This was the first experience I had where an associate didn't do much to help me after I've asked a question. I went to the Ala Moana Sephora the other day with my bf to get a Christmas gift for my friend. We were greeted at the door as usual and I grabbed an urban decay palette for my friend and headed to the perfume section to get her perfume. The lady there asked me if I needed any help. Usually my answer would be no but since I am buying for someone else I wanted recommendations. So I said "Yes, which of these scents are coconut-y?" Cause my friend likes coconut. The lady points to one next to her and I smell it, smells good. So far so good. Then she says "Sun de Gioia is also good." Unless you are well versed in perfumes and brands, there is no way you would know what that is. To me it sounded like she was saying "sun day joy ah." So I ask "which one is that?" And she just repeats herself "Armani Sun de Gioia." She doesn't move or anything just points in the general direction to the right. So I was like "... Um.... okay?" So I had to awkwardly walk down the perfume aisle and ask over and over "is it this one? No? .... is it this one? No, uh, what about this one?" Like it was weird it was the first time a sales associate didn't help direct me to a product. She just stood there for a while until she finally was like "it's next to the red one." I found it eventually and it smelled good. So I kept those spray strips with me as I browsed around and smelled other scents. While I browsed the lady literally just watched us and sometimes came to hover. We weren't wearing anything nice so maybe she felt we couldn't afford it and were wasting her time? Maybe she thought we would steal? Idk. But I felt it was unnecessary to patrol us. It took me a while to decide but eventually I got a variety pack which included one of her recommendations because I thought my friend would like options. Why couldn't she just show me where the product was? It was as if we were wasting her time. Even when she recommended the products she just said the names and nothing about them. Like "this one is warm and summery" "this one is soft and feminine if you don't like something too strong" etc. it was just "this has coconut, that has coconut" And why patrol us when we aren't doing anything wrong? I didn't have any bags or someplace to put items to steal, so maybe it was cause we weren't dressed nice that day? I'm just not sure. If you want someone to buy a product shouldn't you help them? It's really a hit or miss when you come here; and it depends largely on who is assisting you. I've been here about a dozen times and I'd say half of those times were just awful. The sales and beauty techs were short and even when you are asking them for help they'll walk by you like they don't see you. Then there are a few that's willing to help and I appreciate it. I honestly would rather go to the Sephora on Kalakaua than this one, the staff are much more pleasant at that store and it's usually not very crowded at all compared to the one at Ala Moana. I'm also sort of dumfounded as to why the employees at this location seem to have an attitude- most of them do. I would recommend people to go there either early when they first open or later in the evening to avoid the crowd because when they're crowded they're most definitely the rudest. I asked the lady who works there is there's a concealer that covers the bumps on my face as if there isn't anything there, like a really good one. If there isn't, okay. After I asked, she began to talk extremely fast "WELL YOU CANT HIDE TEXTURE. CONCEALER ONLY HIDES COLOR, DO YOY UNDERSTAND". I was looking for a gift for my girlfriend's daughter so I decided to visit the Sephora at Ala Moana. For your information the name "Sephora" is the blending of the ancient Greek word for pretty - "sephos"; and the Biblical name "Zipporah", who was Moses' exceptionally beautiful wife. I think the outside of the store is "sephos" cool. I think the inside of the store is "sephos" chic. I thought the salesgirls looked "sephos" hot. I thought the perfumes smelt "sephos" sweet. I think the lipsticks are "sephos" expensive. I heard the cosmetics are "sephos" good. I thought the customer services was "sephos" professional. I thought the female customers all seemed "sephos" happy. I thought all the male customers seemed "sephos" awkward. In the end, I think the "sephos" hot salesgirl that helped me was" sephos" happy that I bought something. For me I felt "sephos" uncomfortable in Sephora. I wanted to take some pictures but I thought the "sephos" hot salesgirls would think I was "sephos" perverted. Too bad my girlfriend's daughter doesn't like sports. I feel "sephos" comfortable in a Sports Authority. P.S. If I were to name the store I would call it "Sephokie" because "kie" is the ending of my girlfriend's name; and I think my girlfriend is exceptionally beautiful. Manager on duty OFFENDED ME by LOUDLY saying to her associates to WATCH me because she thought I was stealing a Anatasia pomade because it was in my hand! I was trying out the product and she passed by me only to loudly announce to her worker in that section that she needed to WATCH ME because I "had something in my hand". How offensive and degrading is that! I noticed after her announcement that other employees eyed me out as they spoke on their walkie talkies. I understand they are trying to minimize theft BUT it should not be at the expense of a customers integrity. Manager on Duty / Director in Charge: GLORIA. This is the one who offended me. If you enjoy horrible customer service and feeling uncomfortable/belittled while shopping, please give your business to this shitshow that is Sephora Ala Moana. I started wearing makeup during my late middle school years/early high school years and would visit Sephora to try out all of the different products offered here. And every single time, I've been treated poorly while shopping here. It's completely unacceptable and honestly disgusting that Sephora has, and continues to, treat me like I'm going to steal everything in my damn sight. Yes, I understand the entire loss prevention movement of retail...but don't make it so blatantly obvious that you want me out of your store when I haven't done anything to warrant that type of hostility. With Macy's/Nordstrom right around the corner, I can't see how people continue to shop here. Maybe I'm only treated this way because I look young, and therefore, I don't have money to spend on makeup, which is not true. (Lady, look at my face-- do you see how much makeup I'm wearing?). On that note, for being located at such a world class mall, I would expect workers to know better and not dismiss people based on looks. Regardless of whatever reason it may be, every customer deserves to be treated with respect if they haven't done anything to warrant otherwise. I love being a girl!! This place truly supports every girls fantasy of make-up heaven! Yes little girls we get to play with makeup more when we get older! Imagine that??? Yep we still paint our faces with eye shadows and mark our eyes with eyeliners. This place is make-up galore obviously but they also do have other things for your ladies and gents that need to buy your gf, wife, mom, bff and any other female person in your life. They have Skin care needs, nail polishes, brushes, perfumes, hair straighteners, makeup bags and more! You'll be surprise that they do carry Mens fragrance as well. The prices can get a little pricey but they are good quality items. I appreciate this place because it is not all high-end merchandise if you want cheaper makeup they do and if you really want to spend the most for your money they have that as well. It just depends on your paycheck that day :) Another awesome thing about this store is that they have a rewards program for members and membership is free! For every purchase you make you earn points and it accumulates to get you free samples of things. I like to hoard my points until christmas so I can get some goodies for myself when buy gifts for others! Double win! Basically if you need something to glam yourself for a hot date, party or any excuse to bring your self esteem up this will be your place. The missing star is because sometimes I get bombarded with sales staffs and it just gets annoying, I get about all the sales workers ask me if I need help but thanks all I need is one or two asking me. I love the store but I hate some employees. First incident: I walk in with my nephew & boyfriend browsing on items to purchase. At one point they both crowd around me joking on something & an employee approach me asking if I needed help. Because of that they call security. As I walk over to the register the security guard continuously looks my way as if I was going to steal something, yet I'm in line to purchase my items. Already I'm pissed off cause I know he was called in for me. As we walk out with my purchases, the security walks behind us & goes on his walkie talkie saying "suspicious female still in store". I'm not stupid. I KNOW he was watching me. Second incident: I was looking for ABH dipbrow pomade in chocolate & it wasn't on the rack. So I open the bottom drawer where they keep the rest of their stock, since no one approaches me for help. Then, an employee quickly rushes over to me & asked if I needed help. No idiot, I opened the drawer to help myself since no one bothers to assist me. DUH! I needed help. So then I continue to walk around looking at products & I can see multiple employees keeping a close eye on me. Once again, I'm not an idiot. I'm not going to steal something!! I get that it's their job but at least do it discreetly so they don't offend customers. read more
