Here's the deal: I hate waiting in long lines. In my experience, to avoid that and still eat breakfast here, you basically have to get here and wait for them to open. For me, that means getting my butt out of bed and being outside before 8am on a Saturday. BUT, here is what I will say. - I'm that overly discerning jerk who cares about how my eggs are poached when I go to breakfast or brunch and they do them perfectly here - the coffee is delish and plentiful (Highwire, I believe) - the potatoes are a mix of shredded hash and chunkier potato bits, nice and crispy (if it's not obvious from that description.. they're great) - their biscuits are great, sweet or savory 4 stars instead of 5 because I've had a couple misses here. Went here after it changed from being the Full House Cafe to Sequoia. I can't really speak to the overall food quality since I tried only one thing, the cheapest I could get which was the granola at the time. It tasted nice and looked just fine. The place looks pretty and I have no complaints about the service. What I do want to say is that I extremely dislike the pricing of the menu. At the full house cafe you could get a full meal for 5-8 dollars. This IS NOT possible here. The only people that are able to afford coming here are probably gentrifiers. I don't know the details about the quality of the food you're serving (whether or not it's local or organic or etc.) being the reason for higher prices.But, if higher food quality is what is affecting the prices, it would be nice to know on the website or through the menu somehow. Otherwise it just feels like hipster inflated prices. If you want to really be inclusive and really a part of the community, you need to make it so that more members of the community afford to eat. Adding two cheaper dishes at the minimum would be good. read more

I never leave reviews however I hope this is seen by the owner. Y'all's service is trash, I walked out after 30min and behind there were a few more tables who decided to leave as well! it's Wednesday morning, not too crowded and the servers are running around like chickens with they head cut off, mind you out of everyone inside only 3 tables actually had food or drinks. I wasn't given a menu, i put a drink order in and then the waiter went to doing everything BUT getting peoples drink orders. And when I was ready to order I asked a different person can they take my order since I knew it might take a while and she said she couldn't take my order bc she didn't take my drink order... I'm trying to figure out is this like commission based service or something? Like dawg just take the order and put it in, help out! I was even more confused by this since 20% is added on every check so it's not like you really taking her tip! So my thing is if y'all are under staffed y'all could implement ordering from the table with QR codes so at least people can feel like they are being able to be helped in a way or just to get a order locked in! Best biscuit and gravy in town. I love Sequoia for its biscuits because the are light and flakey and perfectly baked complemented with homemade Jam or amazing gravy. They are the best in the East Bay! And all of their Artisanal side dishes and organic offerings as well as their in-house baked goods like their Rye bread and short cake. Hard to find all this done well under one roof. The service is always excellent as well. read more

5 star food, I mean the food is exceptional. And that is hard to with breakfast because breakfast foods are easy to make and have them be pretty good. Hands down the best southern biscuits I've had since the South Carolina Hilton Head Hotel brunch buffet of 1979. Anyways, they do a great hollandaise on their variations (salmon, fresh trout, other meat) of benedicts. They serve almost every dish with fresh greens or fruit, and the portions are HUGE. They have fried chicken and light and crispy waffles that are probably coated in lard, but they're delicious and I could eat 3 of them in one sitting. They also have real maple syrup and friendly capable staff. Mimosas and other adult brunch drinks are available. There are a couple of BIG cons though, so be warned. The minimum wait time for a seat is about 25 minutes, no matter what, I've gone and been told that the wait time is 1.5 hours! My husband won't go there because is so loud inside that you have to yell to hear your family and friends. It would help if they had a bigger space. At prime time there's quite a wait and the parking shituation is very competitive on MacArthur. The coffee? So-so. Are you hungry? The kitchen isn't as speedy as it should be, but "have some more coffee..." Been here a few times and this premium-priced trendy breakfast spot serves up great food but is a bit over-hyped. The original vision is pretty good. Hopefully, they can get more efficient to make the wait and price with the visit. Still, it's a four star cafe. read more

When seated, we ordered tea with lemon and honey. The honey was served in a neat little jar with a honey dipper. It was a nice touch. My egg mushroom and spinach scramble was tasty. I thought the biscuits were good, but not the best I ever had. My hubby had the country breakfast and cleaned his plate. If we lived in the neighborhood, I'm sure we'd visit again. read more

I wouldn't normally give a review for a chicken salad with potatoes, but I have to say the food I had a Sequoia Diner on December 20th was really special. The salad had perfectly cooked chicken cubes, flavorful bacon pieces I think they make their own bacon? and it also had their own version of housemade ranch dressing. Yum all around. The potatoes were also cooked perfectly. Nice and crispy on top and super flavorful throughout. I wasn't a big fan of the tea that I had. It just didn't seem to steep properly in the broken tea pitcher that I was given. Other than that. Super yum. And I look forward to going back when I am in Oakland later this month. read more

I'd had this bookmarked for a while, but ventured into the Laurel District in East Oakland for the first time this morning. I was surprised to see that none of my trusted East Bay Yelpers had reviewed this place but was excited to give it a whirl We arrived around 8:30 and found the place mostly full, but were able to grab the last available booth with no wait. It has that diner charm, with a long bar counter and several booths along the wall. This isn't the place to bring a large group, but it is perfectly cozy for 2 or 4. There are several adorable waitresses that were super friendly, greeting you on the way in and out, and keeping the coffee coming. I loved the positive vibe. I like that they keep the menu relatively simple, with several classics, and a few twists. No kids menu here, per se, but my boys were happy with their pastries...a pecan roll and the strawberry cream cheese danish. They stood on their own as a small breakfast, but would be equally nice as a shared starter while you wait on the main event. I was thrilled with the mushroom and spinach scramble which, like their other egg dishes, come with some perfectly cooked and seasoned potatoes, some excellent sourdough toast, and a small rocket salad. Seemingly simple, but it leaves you wondering why you can't do 'em that perfect at home. The Highwire brewed coffee wasn't my favorite, but it did the trick and my cup was never empty or cold. One of my favorite brunch spots! I always try to go on a weekday or very early because this is one popular restaurant on the weekend. Especially if going in a group be prepared to wait a long time. There are more tables or bar space for just two people. Everyone is super nice, everything feels hip and homey. They have antique or antique looking forks and knives as well as some of the cups. They make a delicious soft scramble and their breakfast potatoes are great! Nice and crispy. The waffles with strawberries are my favorite. A thin crunchy waffle. Easily the best breakfast I've had since living in the area! Everything is locally sourced and absolutely delicious. The Home made biscuits & Home made sourdough were my absolute favorite! The service was amazing, every one was happy and welcoming. Lots of parking on the street makes it easy to park somewhere close by. Yes yes yes! We came here for breakfast on a Wednesday morning so although it was busy there was really no wait. This place was so delicious and the staff were some of the kindest women I've ever met. I am a new mom and came with my newborn and a girlfriend. After we were seated and they noticed i had the baby, they quickly moved us to a booth as soon as it became available without us suggesting it. I got the salmon avocado toast and coconut Thai iced tea. The salmon and avocado toast was flavorful and portioned just right. I like this place a lot! It's in the Laurel/Dimond district and is part of the locally run shops that have been popping up down MacArthur. The food here is delicious and creative and the service is always excellent too. The fried chicken is really good, if you get there early enough to snag an order. I've also tried a root veggie hash, a goat cheese omelette, and a benedict....all really delicious. I like to sub out a biscuit for toast because their biscuits are yummy and the homemade jam is always a surprise flavor. One drawback, as I know others have mentioned, is the wait time. I've waited upwards of an hour and a half to eat breakfast here and when you're already hungry, that is a really really long time. Reservations or at least a call in waitlist would have a huge impact on the experience for me because by the time I sit down I near hangry. At least I am able to contain the hanger because I know the meal will be delicious (as long as there is an order of fried chicken left ;) ) read more

We waited a looong time after for our two mains which were carefully ordered, mine a la carte, my friend's with toast rather than biscuit. The main orders not only arrived after a long wait but were wrong and mine was cold to the touch. It also took a special flag to a person to get our requested cream for chilling coffee. The orders were corrected in time but at no point were we offered any recompense. The bill includes a mandatory 20% tip. If you're looking for a better dinner, head to park blvd. There is a restaurant at the corner of Glenn field and park blvd. Exact pricing, but the food portion and quality make it worth it.
