After a less than pleasant experience at Penguin Cafe, we were walking out to explore the area when the buttery aroma enveloped us in a hug. Following our noses like Toucan Sam with Fruit Loops, we were lured next door to where a kind man with a big smile welcomed us as we walked by the door. "Doesn't it smell delicious?" he boasted .. his smile as warm as the aromas seeping out behind him. We smiled back and politely passed by since we had just finished eating next door. We walked around for a bit and ended up circling back because we parked near by.. but this time the smells were too overpowering to just walk away. We entered to find the same kind man behind the counter.. unloading yet another delicious batch of empanadas. The shop is small and humble but had beautiful art work on the walls (available for sale), a glass display of so many beautiful empanadas, and just the smell of fresh baked goodness was making our mouths water. Looking at the menu, we were even more inclined to purchase because the prices were so fabulous for the size.. and there even was the option to purchase for "take and bake". The gentleman was very easy to talk to .. and he recommended that since we had over an hour's drive to return home.. we do the take and bake option. I'm glad we did. I opted for the mushroom, chicken pot pie (for the hubbie), and the meat and potatoes. GREAT idea to fold the empanadas a specific way to identify flavor. He provides a diagram on the business card, stapled to the bag, that also contains the easy baking instructions. Simple egg wash + 400 degrees.. PRESTO. I felt like a champion chef when these babies came out of the oven. The enticing buttery baked smell echoed in my own kitchen.. singing praises of all things glorious that can come out of an oven. Also, I feel that it is important to note these kept very well in the fridge for a few days before they were baked. THE MUSHROOM ONE. TO. DIE. FOR. Wild mushrooms.. a delicious sauce.. even my super picky eaters devoured this. The crust was PERFECTO. One of the best empanadas I have had in a long time. The beef and potatoes was also DELICIOUS. Very well balanced spices (not spicy) to create a good flavor when paired to the big chunks of potatoes. This was also a fan favorite. The chicken pot pie was tasty to me.. but the boys felt like there were too many peas (but what kid likes peas).. I liked that there were LOTS of veggies and it was very yummy. Least favorite of the three but it was all so delicious. If i'm in the area, I'm going to buy a DOZEN of these bad boys to haul back to SD. Fantastic service, great prices, EXCELLENT empanadas.. The Spunach and Chicken/Mushroom emanadas [$5.25 each) were delicious and filing. Crust was the perfect thickness, flaky, and held together. The gelato, on the other hand, was a total miss ($6 small / $6.50 med / $7 lrg). The icy and gummy texture didn't make for the right mouth feel. My boyfriend and I stopped by here while we were in laguna real quick to try their empanadas. The parking is really difficult here. There is a lot behind the restaurant but to get out of the lot, you have to do a whole turn (only if youre lucky and there is no other car there) because there is only one exit. There is also street parking but that is usually taken pretty quick. The restaurant itself is small and has that homey feel to it. The worker kindly helped us out and serviced us very quick. My boyfriend got the chicken and mushroom while I opted for the Filipino chicken one. Mine was very dry and there were raisins in it that gave it an interesting flavor. My boyfriends empanada was very delicious tho. I would recommend the chicken and mushroom for sure. First time trying this place in Laguna Beach. It is better than I expected. It's a small and cozy place. I was greeted & served by two sweet gals. I had the chicken & mushroom empanada. On such a cold day like this, a bite into melted cheese with chicken and mushroom was the best. Their chimichurri sauce added a kick to the empanada making it more flavorful. With or without the sauce there's a different pleasure to this dish. The crust was crunchy giving it more texture. The thai ice tea was not too sweet like many other places I've been to. It was just perfect to have a hot bite and sip a little cold thai tea. To the back of the shop was a nice short walk way down to the beach. Such a pleasant location. It is my opinion that the food in this town tends to be overpriced and over-hyped (like so many other beach towns)...Sergio's however is not. I have yet to meet an empanada here that I didn't ravenously devour. Beef (with raisins- yeah it's good), prosciutto, samosa, pot pie, etc., all delicious. Let's not speak of the dessert empanadas (personal faves: guava and banana/cajeta), our words can't do them justice. My only complaint is that the alfajores always look delicious, but are in fact way overpriced. But most of you will be too busy browsing through the sexy selection of empanadas to even notice. This place is a gem, but don't take my word for it. Try it for yourself, slap some chimichurri on it and if you don't agree with me well...at least you got to take in all the smells. read more

I was getting a bit hungry, so my friend recommended that we get some empanadas to go. He had been here before, and he said the food tasted awesome. After my own experience, I don't disagree. The place was nice, has a bathroom for customers, and the server/cashier was also friendly and talkative. They had many flavors of empanadas to choose from, and the server gave me some pointers and his own recommendations. In particular, he swore by the mushroom, chicken, and cheese one. So I trusted him and got one of that, and one of mushroom (one of several vegetarian options, which were nice to see. It's nice to be inclusive for your customer population.) I forgot what my friend wanted, but for sure 1 of his original 2 choices were out, and that particular option was ALSO out the last time he visited... so... maybe a minor point off here for lack in preparation. Each empanada was about $4, I believe, and it came with a dipping sauce called chimichurri, which was a mixture of oil, parsley, garlic, and such. (In fact, never heard of this ever before in my life, and it definitely made the food taste more interesting.) We got these to go so we could eat them on the beach. Understandably, they were not really warm/hot when we ate them anymore, and this review would be based off on that. Flavor wise, they were good. Portion wise, if I am not mistake, they looked pretty standard. I recommend getting two for most people to get full. Get one as a substantial snack. Going back to his recommendation, he wasn't lying. The mushroom, chicken, cheese one was decent. The mushroom (by itself) one was also not bad. I am sure if these were eaten fresh, as in reheated, they would be even better.
