Recommend: YES!! First let me say, I'm always looking for a good empanada. I have been spoiled with the empanadas at Havana Kitchen in Old Town Temecula. Sergio's are the first empanadas (other than Havana's) I've had that I would eat a second time. My friend and I wanted a relaxed visit to the beach, and Sergio's fit the bill perfectly! The gentleman who served us was very friendly and patient as we tried to decide what to get. Since we had not planned on dinner, we treated this more as a large snack ;) So we decided to split two empanadas (and I NEEDED a salad!!). Plus one cold brewed coffee for me. The salad was a very pleasant surprise! With plenty of roasted red bells, garbanzo beans, and feta, all with a lovely dressing, the salad was truly irresistible for me after the first bite! The first empanada we ate was the prosciutto & mozzarella. My first observation was, of course, of the crust. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is flaky and buttery. A true work of art!! I would have liked this particular empanada more if it had more prosciutto, but I understand just how expensive ingredients are. Being a restaurant owner is a tough job! Overall, this empanada was just what you would expect (well maybe a little less, but the same basics!): meat and cheese. We both slathered chimmichurri onto it, and that was delicious!! Our second empanada was the sweet potato with black bean, onion & cilantro. This was a total surprise of flavors. We both absolutely loved this empanada! There was a wonderful seasoning to the filling, which was thicker than the meat & cheese. The thick filling was a nice contrast to the buttery flaky crust. The Cold Brew coffee was a little bitter, but some people like that! Regardless of who likes what, I was still able to finish it with dinner ;) Overall, I can highly recommend Sergio's. After a nice morning hike, we wanted to grab a snack around the area, so we decided to drop by this place. Reading the Yelp reviews made me excited, because I love empanadas. As we were choosing what to order, the worker opened the oven and showed us a tray of empanadas. I thought he was about to give us some samples, but he just said that they were baked fresh daily. We were kind of confused. Anyways, we ended up ordering four different pastries. However, when we got home, we found out that he gave us two of the following instead of what we ordered (we should have checked before we left): Chicken: it was just ok. It had chicken, carrots, and peas inside, so it was like a hand-held pot pie. Carne and Papas: it was better than the chicken. It had more filling and was seasoned well. The menu said that it has red bell peppers, but I barely saw any. It was mainly ground beef and potatoes. Overall, the best part of the empanadas was the crust; it was buttery and flaky. The chimichurri was the savior of the meal (or maybe I should call it a snack). I had to drench each bite with the chimichurri to make it taste better. In order to be make this a meal, you would probably have to eat 4 or 5 to be somewhat full. In addition, the empanadas were overpriced ($4.50 each). I probably wouldn't drop by again. Some of the best empanadas I've ever had. The crust is very well done, flaky and buttery in all the right places. It did seem like some of them were cooked unevenly but I do like my crispy edges so I didn't mind. we tried..... Hawaiian, beef and papas, mushroom, chicken, and sweet potato, all were amazing! The mushroom was my favorite followed by the chicken. You can ask for this really nice chimichurri they make in house, they also give you chile paste. The beef and papas tasted good with both but best with the chile. First time in Laguna, first restaurant I've tried here and this really helped set me on vacation mode! Being from South Florida (now living in Dana Point) with the great South American influence there are a lot of empanada places to choose. Sergio's ranks right up there with most of them! I found the pastry cover to be one of most flavorful, flakey and well made of any I have had. I thought the fillings were done well but a little on the skimpy side for the price of the empanada (most empanada's in South FL run from $1.50 to $3). The chimichurri was excellent and a great addition to eating your empanada. The young lady at the counter was helpful and welcoming. I excused myself for making a mess while eating (the pastry so flakey) and she said, "No worries we have to clean up after everyone." They came with a sauce and I did try it. I thought it was fine but my empanadas were so flavorful I felt they didn't need the sauce. I ordered one beef and potato and one spicy pork.
