Monnik has been a staple for me almost the entire time I've lived here in Louisville. (10yrs) and it fits into Schnitzelburg perfectly. Their beer is fun, innovative and isn't afraid to explore. Although it may not be groundbreaking but making good beer doesn't always have to be. Even if beer isn't your jam I highly recommend stopping in and tasting the menu that Chef Kathryn Fink has created and Everytime I'm here there's always something new to try be it a weekly special or the ever changing menu. The smoked whitefish pate is outstanding and always a great starter. The look and feel of Monnik always reminds me of a cottage in the mountains and after spending time inside it's so easy to get lost and forget where you're at. As for the service it's always top notch and helpful. I've spent countless hours at the bar asking about different styles of beer and what makes them special. Our table of 8 was seated quickly and greeted warmly by our server on a Saturday night. Ordered several appetizers for the table, the KFC, Fried Smelt and Pretzel with the trio of sauces. We went here for dinner last night. Overall, it was very good. We sat inside by the window which was nice. My husband ordered a flight of beers so we could try several of them. They were all good. We ordered some Brussel sprouts for an appetizer but they came out with the meal instead. I liked the Brussel sprouts but my husband thought they were over cooked. He ordered the salmon which he liked. I ordered the classic burger. It was very good. I ordered it without onions but it still had onions on it. They were rings so I could pull them off fairly easy. It had a sauce on it that must have had horseradish in it which got me a few times. It must have been in the beer mustard. I like horseradish but something to know just in case you are not a fan because the menu did not call that out. The servers were very friendly, checked on us multiple times, and refilled our drinks. One of the reasons we sat inside was to avoid the bugs outside. As it turned out, we still had a fly at our table the whole time. Worst service and food we have had in years! My wife ordered the brisket special. It is Brisket and gravy over french fries. When it was served, there was no brisket. We asked the waitress and she said it was in the gravy. We both said there was no brisket on the plate or in the gravy. We invited the waitress to take a look. She went and talked to the chef. The Chef sent out a small (maybe 2oz container) with 3 thin slices of brisket and gravy. It was a joke. We have been to Monnick several times over the years.. Never never again. The waitress was not professional and the fact that she wanted to argue with me over meat that was not on our plate is absurd. We will not be back. read more

One of my friends has been wanting to come to Monnik for a long time and I needed a stamp for the Louisville Ale Trail so we decided to make it out on Saturday. It was busy but we managed to get a seat before a large group arrived. Our waiter was very attentive. He made sure we were taken care of before they put in the food order for the large party which I appreciate. They have a pretty large beer selection with most of them having German names. All of us tired the Oktoberfest it was a crowd pleaser. I don't remember the name of the other beer I tried but I enjoyed it. It had a slight grapefruit aftertaste. We ended up ordering food and everyone enjoyed it. I tried the fried cauliflower and it was fantastic! It had a sweet and spicy chili sauce on it. The waiter recommended the jalapeño aoli to go with it and I'm glad he did. It added that extra spicy kick to it. I did steal some of my husband's fries and they were cooked to perfection. The main reason why Monnik isn't fully 5 stars is because of their pricing. I feel like they nickel and dime on things. The aoli was an additional 75 cents. It's reminded me of the millennial burger trend on TikTok where the burgers are 17 dollars and if you want fries it's an additional 5 dollars. read more

Love this place! I don't go too often, but when I do, I'm never disappointed. I went for a lunch bite and a beer, and left very happy. I got the Bier Burger, which has a juicy burger, beer cheese, as a giant onion ring, with a side of grits-- YUM! plus an ice cold Italian Disco of course. I was so disappointed in the "gyro". $16 for a sad contraption made with overcooked sausage, stale pita bread that was further over-toasted, and barely a spreading of tzatziki sauce. I don't think this needs to be even called a gyro, because it's not. The brussels sprouts were okay value-wise for $5 as an added side, but not anything to write home about. The waitress we had was friendly and attentive, but Monnik has lost its edge over the years. One star for the food, added a star back because the waitress was nice and offered good service. Beer options are still good though, after all these years I've been going here. I don't think I will be back again. read more

Stopped here with a colleague. It was spot on. The area is family friendly with lots of people walking around. They have a very cool menu with some unique drink names. Several chef inspired meals. The charcuterie board was very interesting but tasty. They have anything from some sandwiches to some lighter salads. There are also a few tables on the sidewalk and a blocked off sitting area on the street. They also have a larger room that can be rented out upstairs for bigger groups. Service was fantastic. I think I have found my new favorite brew pub in Louisville, which is really saying something because we have a lot of 'em! My husband and I came on a Sunday for an early dinner and it was easy to find parking and a table. We were immediately greeted by the super nice and non-pretentious staff who had great beer recommendations. We started with the bourbon bacon jam crostini which was amazing. Super salty and sweet with a nice tang from the pickled onions. I definitely recommend this one. I also had the Local Burger which was insane. I now want all of my brioche buns to be everything bagel seasoned. My husband had the Bratadella Sandwich and he housed the whole thing! The fries are big enough to share for two people, too. The place is small but they have an outdoor, dog friendly patio which is always nice. We will 100% be returning! read more

I had heard really good things about this place, and I had dabbled with some of their award-winning offerings at the Gravy Cup, and I was so excited to finally try it out. We came with some friends and sat at the bar for a little bit. The atmosphere is super cozy with all the wood and the low ceilings. The staff was awesome, too. We loved talking to the bartender and getting his inside scoop on the beer brewing process, and how they achieve the specific notes on their beers. Overall great experience. I think Monnik is one of the more unique breweries in town. The cafe-style seating on the street makes for a delightful experience. The inside feels more like a restaurant than a brewery. And on top of that, instead of outsourcing food or relying on pizza, they have a very diverse menu. I have been to Monnik several times, but this was my first time enjoying a meal. I ordered a beer to start, of course, along with a Bier Burger. It's a bit of sticker shock to pay $22 for a burger and fries, but my stomach was very happy. The beer was very solid and the burger was filling. I left feeling pretty satisfied and ready to face the day. I don't make it to this brewery enough because there are ones closer to my house, but I always have a nice time. While I do feel there are better breweries and certainly better restaurants, if you're looking for a place that satisfies a craving for good beer and good food, Monnik is a good choice. read more

This is my favorite brewery and Pub too. I have often attended for their best beers. Their foods are excellent. However, I have discovered that they had new chef and change the menu. I decided to give a try. I will definitely come back fo3 more menu items to try! I ordcred the fried chicken sandwich. It was top notched I ever had. It is not too spicy. It is just the right amount of spicy. The chicken was moist and the breading was good. I wish I could order different side but I was in mood for fries. Went to Monnik for the first time last night and loved it. It was the perfect night to sit outside and enjoy some drinks and good food. They have about 10 tables outside kind of on the sidewalk next to them and you can order at the bar and get your food taken out to you. They have a ton of drink and food options on their menu so it was hard to decide what to get! I started off by trying their Spaghett which I've heard of and have been wanting to try. I got it with the Czech Lager, and it also had Aperol and lemon and was light, citrusy, and had just a hint of sweetness. The app I ordered came out very quickly - the Korean Fries Cauliflower. At first bite I really thought I could've been biting into an actual wing. It had a great mix of sweet and spiciness and the breading was perfectly soft with a tiny bit of crunch. I also got the Ahi Tuna with Kimchi which also had some cucumbers and mushrooms and a nice chili sauce that paired the ingredients together very well. read more

The staff were very welcoming in this cozy tavern! It felt like we were arriving at a medieval inn-turned gastro pub after a long days journey into night. The food was German-inspired (we were in Schnitzelberg after all). Savory and delicious, and a great example of the style. If you are looking for good beer and a local hidden gem I would recommend this. The service was exceptionally nice and friendly, and the vibe is welcoming and comfortable. The beer selections did not disappoint. I had a flight so I could try a few different beers and liked all of them. The one issue I have is that if you order a burger sides are a-la-cart. The burger buy itself is $17 and then sides are $5. I heard a couple next to me make the same comments at the price of the burger with no basic side. Typically, I find that I am spending $15-$18 for a burger and fries/chips as most joints. The only reason I did not give a 5 star review was for the food pricing. I will go back to enjoy the beer. We had already eaten so we just had a couple of beers. All their beers are clean tasting. We looked at the menu and decided to go back the next day for lunch. So, on Monday we went back for lunch and a beer. He had one of their burgers, and it had a huge fried onion ring on it. He said it was a unique and good burger. Monnik makes my favorite beer I have had in Louisville and I am picky about my beer! I was so pleased they offer flights so I could try a variety of different beers and there were many appetizers that looked delicious on their menu. I got the shishito peppers the first time I went and they were tasty with a great dipping sauce. The second time I went I had the local burger and that baby was delicious. Topped with beer cheese and juicy! The perfect pick me up after a late night out. The pretzel and beer cheese were fantastic as well but beware of the spicy mustard... she is not playing around. It definitely has a wasabi heat that packs a punch. Service decent but definitely better when we sat at the bar. 4 - I'd drive 30 minutes just to come here. Skip to the end to see my rating scale. From the outside it doesn't look like much, but that seems to be a common case in Louisville in the two days we were there. I'd really like to check it out in warmer weather when the pet friendly outside areas can be used. Big plus in my book. Good selection of a variety of styles. On this trip to KY and TN we noticed that IPAs aren't the same as in other places. I didn't look specifically, but I'd guess that the IBUs are significantly lower than what an IPA drinker might expect. But other than that, the beers were pretty good with plenty of darks and lights to choose from. The bartender recommended the local burger. We got a big order of War fries to go with it. The burger was way too salty for my taste, but the fries were good. The house mayo and peanut satay made them pretty interesting. Next time we in the area, I'd gladly drive a little bit out of the way for appetizers and beers. (Just not an IPA or a burger.) And I hope to have the opportunity to hang out on the patio for a few hours on a warm spring evening. It's been several years since I have been to Monnick, but we stopped by for dinner before a concert recently. It was a Saturday night and we had no reservations, but showed up around 6:30 pm and were able to be sat immediately (score)! We had a large table by the window with some extra seating. We had a very nice server, who admitted it was her first night. She was friendly, but we noticed service was a bit slow and we had to remind her about a few of our drinks - we were in no hurry so that didn't affect our experience. We began with drinks - I don't love their beer options but they had a margarita slushee that was calling my name! It was delicious and I ordered at least two. They have lots of beers on tap and then some can and bottle options. The menu is very diverse with meat, vegan and vegetarian items on it. We started with the grilled crudite ($15), fried green tomatoes ($14) and pub pretzel ($11). The grilled crudite was slightly disappointing for the price. They gave us a huge bowl of fondue but was mostly raw veggies. The fried green tomatoes were excellent - not green - but we loved them anyway. The sauce on the plate had everyone scraping for the last bite. The pub pretzel was good but small portion for $11 and they barely gave any fondue. For dinner we ordered the Reuben sandwich ($15) and local burger ($17). Pricing is high considering it doesn't come with a side. The Reuben was a good traditional sandwich but not sure if I'd get it again. All in all, the drinks were flowing and we had a great view of the restaurant and street.
