I hired Serrano Tree Service for a diseased tree. To be fair, they didn't promise a cure, but the value and communication are not there. They visited twice, spent only 30 minutes each time, and charged me $800+ total. The tree completely died anyway right after second visit. The last tree service I used left a business card in my mailbox. Should have read the Yelp reviews first. Let's say there's probably a reason why they drive around leaving business cards. This time I inquired through a Yelp project. Serrano texted me back to schedule an estimate quickly. I was able to get the estimate and work scheduled quickly. The first boss came over, and was very professional and courteous. Looked around, answered my questions, and made some expert suggestions. He understood the vibe I was going for. The crew of 3 came with truck and chipper. The foreman was also very responsive and polite. They were willing to take some direction, bit just do the minimum and get out. They did the divide and conquer, taking care of the smaller jobs in parallel. They were done in a couple hours. Good service, good price, professional and expert at their craft! read more

We weren't sure if it was dead or whether it needed more watering, less watering, or some nutrients. The person who took our appointment assured us that if the tree was confirmed dead that we would get a credit for replanting a new tree in the future or removing the existing tree. The arborist came to our house and advised us to stop watering it for a couple of months to see if it might recover. We did. The tree did not. When we called the company to discuss removing the dead tree and to plant a new tree in its place, Serrano would not honor the agreement to apply a credit. Since they never provided anything in writing (payment was done over the phone via credit card) we have no recourse. We feel duped and will never hire them again. We learned a lesson. I selected Serrano's based on the Yelp reviews and the reviewers were spot on. The team of 5 came at 7 am and were done by 8:30 am. They respected the early hour and did not use noisy equipment until just prior to leaving. They cleaned up leaving the patio in better shape than before they came. Worked well as a team. As a woman I was happy to see that they had a woman as part of their team. Prior to this I had someone from Serrano's out to discuss pruning my cascading red maple. He told me that my tree was fine and didn't need any work. I was happy with his honesty so decided to get my other trees pruned. We definitely recommend the service and will use it in the future when needed. read more

We had over 20 oleanders in our backyard, planted by the previous owner that were going wild. We decided to get them removed and had Serrano's people come in based on the Yelp reviews. They came in and chopped down the trees and ground the roots down with a machine. At first it appeared to be well done and we even gave them a handsome gratuity. But a few days later we found out that they had broken a few irrigation lines. This ended up causing leaks that made parts of our lawn soggy, water logged and parts of it to dry out as they were not getting enough water. They also cut a few live electric wires in the process. We were told by other tree removal folks we spoke to later on, that this was not the right way to remove tree. The right way is the hard way and the roots need to be dug out before being ground out with machine. read more

They bid it out for a fair price, and unlike their competition, didn't whine about distance (note to other vendors: if you don't want to drive to San Jose, don't advertise that you offer your services there.) I found Serrano's through the Home Concept magazine and was very pleased with them. Chris came out and did the estimate and it was very reasonable. I had 2 other bids and went with Serrano's simply because they "consistently" answer their phone and were prompt and courteous (Bobbie Jo). This tells me that this company is professional (take notes on this). The day of, they were on time and Zach was the crew leader. Not the most friendly person, but as least polite. The rest of the crew (4 of them) were very efficient and hard-working. They had a very difficult job of cutting back an old oak tree to the property line, while dangling over my swimming pool. They did it in 3 hours, including cleaning up all the dropping (into the pool). They did an outstanding job, and I will use them again. I already refer them out to friends. read more

The gentleman who came out to give us an estimate was nice enough & knowledgeable. I was given a verbal estimate to cut two trees on the side of our house and another verbal estimate to cut the three citrus trees in the back of the house. I decided to do both and was given a written estimate to do both jobs. The total estimate I was given was for both services and was advised the work would be completed in 10 days, and that they would leave an invoice I could mail in a check after the work was completed. I waited the 10 days. No service. I called the office and the lady who I spoke with relayed to me that she didn't know she was supposed to schedule our tree service; she would look at her other scheduled appointments and to find a time when she could get us in and call me back. I waited two days no call back from her. So I called again (she sounded perturbed that I was calling again) we set an appointment date for about another week and a half out. On the day of the service, one of the workmen advised us that now (November) is not the time to cut the citrus trees and he recommended waiting until January. That leaves only the trees on the side of the house to be trimmed (Half the work which was originally quoted when my initial estimate was given). Mind you, we were verbally quoted a price for each set of trees, the two trees on the side of the house and the trees at the back of the house. Okay, so I figure the workmen know best and I'm open to his recommendation of waiting until January to cut the citrus trees. He (the onside workman) told us what the minimum fee would be and it was in-line with what I was originally told for the two trees on the side of the house. However, just a few minutes after having this conversation with him I then get a phone call from the lady in the office telling me that it is unreasonable that they send 5 guys "all the way out there" just to cut two trees and she proceeded to give me a minimum that was higher than what the worker onside gave me. And in addition to that, she also told me that payment needed to be collected today onside following the completion of the job. Now.... Let me point out the home where the tree service is taking place is in San Jose and Serano's Expert Tree Service business address is also in San Jose. So, I don't understand her expression "All the way out there..." In addition to that, it is their poor business planning if they sent five workmen guys out to do a job and then decide to only do half the work. That is their call, I was only following their "expert's recommendation". I did not make the suggestion to them to only do half the work. If they feel November is not the time to trim the citrus trees they should have considered that when giving me an estimate and scheduling the job. And lastly the payment issue. I was told by the guy who gave the estimate they would leave and invoice and I can mail in a check. The lady in the office tells me that is incorrect and that payment needed to be collected today after the work was completed. The work is in progress... I may update my review based upon the quality of the completed work. But right now I'm a little disappointed in all the run around I feel I'm getting and because I'm getting one piece of information from the onside workers and varying information from the office. So in the end they honored the original price for the quoted two trees on the side of the house, they left an invoice and I will mail in the payment and the work was done quickly and satisfactorily. Considering this, I've upgraded my original review one star. read more

I have been using Serrano's Tree Service for eight years, and I can't speak highly enough about them. Their employees are all very polite, honest, and professional, and they have a lot of knowledge of trees. They are always on time. Their prices are not cheap, but reasonable. Since this company hires people with experience, you get a high standard of care. This is most important if you want them to trim or plant trees: they understand what is best to maintain the health of the trees, and will not engage in practices (such as topping) that will damage or harm the trees. If you just want a tree chopped down and hauled away, well, maybe you don't care about the experience of the folks doing the work. Although I would. When Serrano's removes a tree they do it safely and neatly, and surrounding plants and structures are not damaged. Over the years Serrano's has trimmed dozens of trees for me, from small plum trees to large redwoods, and they have always done a beautiful job. They listen to my requests and always try to comply, if possible. What's more, I trust them to give me an honest assessment of what needs to be done. We actually did not use Serrano's but I want to comment on the bid they prepared for us. We live in a townhome and our backyard is surrounded by a wall. We wanted trees out and they said they could only cut to grade and could not remove the roots. We got another quote from another company, and for HALF the price they would remove our trees and roots. They simply wheeled a stump grinder though our house. I cannot comment on Serrano's work, but based off of their bid, I would not have high expectations. read more

I'm not the type who believes in hiring the lowest bidder, as it's burned me too many times and I believe we get what we pay for. However, Serrano's Tree Service was very competitively priced - so much so that I was worried the service wouldn't be up to par. I trusted my friend and was thrilled with the quality of service, professionalism and expertise that we brought them back for several other jobs. One of the jobs required that they had to move through the house - they were amazing!! They took such care to not leave even a spec of dirt that you'd never know they'd been there. They also solved an urgent rat problem and were on site within a day. They did an excellent job at removing our tree and helped with general landscaping. David and his crew did a great job with trimming a giant redwood tree in the front yard. With the recent rain and high winds we were afraid the tree would collapse onto the house. Three large limbs did fall into the yard. They thinned the tree limbs and cut the branches all around. We now feel safe and the tree looks so beautiful. We just had a Chinese Elm trimmed and they did an exceptional job! This tree was so full we were in danger of losing limbs and a fence if a branch broke. They were on time, cleaned up and you wouldn't even know they'd been here. They are returning this afternoon to remove mistletoe from the tree in front.
