The easiest way to describe the experience you'll receive at this dealership is to say that Big Island Toyota is the ONLY Toyota dealership on the island and they know it. Let's start with price. You WILL NOT get any good deals at this dealership, this fact has been proven to me again and again. It is cheaper to get on a plane, fly to Oahu, rent a car, drive to a dealer, purchase your car there, and have it shipped back to the Big Island. And I don't mean cheaper by a little, I'm talking in the grands. A coworker and I bought our Tacomas at the same time, same features, both popular colors. I went through SERVCO on Oahu, he went to Big Island Toyota. He paid $3000 more than I did. That's right, $3000. A family friend of ours bought his Tacoma from Big Island Toyota right when he turned 18. He didn't know anything about buying a car, didn't know anything about loans. He's not close to his family and we didn't know him at the time. He was a kid all alone and boy did he walk into a shark tank. They talked him into a vehicle alright. He ended up paying $39,000 for a Tacoma. That's right, $39,000!!!! They smelled blood when he walked in and attacked without mercy. Then there's the "wonderful" service. A family member bought a Corolla from SERVCO on Oahu and had some problems with it when she brought it back to the Big Island while it was still under warranty. Did they ever give her a hard time about fixing it. Keep in mind now that they are supposed to service ANY Toyota under warranty no matter where it was purchased, that's what allows them to be a Toyota dealer. I spoke to some manager named Kurt about why they were giving my family member such a hard time about fixing her car. He came right out and said "you should have thought about that when you bought your car somewhere else." In summary; if you want to get ripped off, if you like shitty service, then by all means, Big Island Toyota is the dealership for you. read more

I bought my Toyota truck on the mainland. With it was the Toyota warranty. When I brought my truck in for warranty repairs I was told that although they accept toyota warrenties (it is afterall a Toyota dealer)they charge extra, shipping is one. When I talked to the warranty folks they had already shipped the parts. Paid for. First lie. Then Hawaii uses different way to charge for work. Toyota warranty authorizes one repair to be 5 hours. Big island Toyota charges another. About 15%above Toyotas numbers. When we started to ask questions my parts were lost for 3 weeks. Found out through Toyota warranty (whom are as corrupt as big island Toyota) that since big island Toyota is privately owned they could do what they want. On the good side although we had a incompetent customer service rep , the staff who did the work actually ordered the parts and when they were found,got the car fixed. We had to threaten a law suit to have them remove charges (my wife's a lawyer). Found out that Toyota customer service is aware of this. Unfortunately when you call customer service it automatically switches you to Hawaii whom.never returned our calls. Toyota warranty has yet to reimburse use or car rental and other out of pocket expenses covered, Have to wait 8 weeks when you put in claim. Then call as they claim they can't call out. Big island Toyota is the only dealership on the big island. It is owned by same person in Hilo and kona. . The work was done well. Received car 29 days after brought into dealership. To bad there so corrupt. Love my truck. Love to buy newer one. Just won't deal with theses crooks read more

After buying four new cars from Big Island Toyota, they extended no Aloha for me. My transmission went out, I took it to Big Island Toyota in Kona. After having the car for two weeks the transmission was working better but still not fixed. A new one was over $4,000 plus installation. I found one that I could get here for $2,100, but Big Island Toyota would not install it for me. After spending almost $200,000 at this business they wouldn't help me out when I needed it. My mom has been a loyal Toyota driver for years. She has owned 2 Avalons, a Sienna and for the last 5 years has had a Venza. Unfortunately the Venza has caused her many problems. Everytime she took it in they couldn't find the problem and of course it would cost her money only for the problem to happen again. One of the latest problems was her front headlight would work at times and then it would not. She started taking it in before her extended warranty was up and they could find no problem. Finally in January they found the problem but told her the car was no longer under warranty and told her it would cost her over $ 500.00. She spoke to the manager and told him the problem but he would only offer her a discount so she paid over $300.00 to get the light fixed. My thought was this guy has some major balls to think that a discount was a good deal instead of saying we missed the problem the first and second time so we will fix it now for free. No competition in Hilo sure brings out the worst in people. The last straw was about a week and a half ago when she was out doing errands and her car wouldn't start. This was not the first time that has happened. I was with her once before when that happened. My mom is 80 years old and the last thing she needs is to be stuck somewhere. I have witnessed how the service people look at her when she brings the car in. It's like they think she is crazy. Well she traded the Venza in for a Honda CRV and told them the problem and guess what when the Honda serviceman tried to move the car the next day it wouldn't start. I guess they must be crazy too. I guess Big Island Toyota feels they are the only toyota dealer in town so they can treat their customers this way and get away with it. My husband and I moved back here 2 years ago and I have been shocked and disappointed in how Big Island Toyota handles customer service. If our dealer in California ever treated us this way there would be hell to pay. Made an appointment 1 MONTH in advance. Paid $100 for a diagnostic. They gave me a bad MAF sensor code. Changed it out, Trucks runs worse than before. They basically told me, there was nothing they could do unless I pay them more money for another diagnostic reading. I'm not made of money! The first reading seemed to have been wrong, shouldn't I get a refund or at the very least, another free reading? They told me that they could put it on the diagnostics again, but that it would be another $100 and that I would have to wait another MONTH before they will be able to see me! The counter staff seems friendly enough, but I guess that's how they "Lube your Entry" before really "Sticking" it to you. Talked to multiple people and none seemed to have thought what they were doing is wrong. Horrible, Horrible service. read more

My vehicle was in the shop for 4 months and not fixed. Virtually no communication. It appears that the basic level of mechanic diagnosis was not performed or performed by someone without basic knowledge. I ended up selling the vehicle to someone who fixed it in 2 hours. 2 HOURS!!!! A bad alternator and clogged fuel injector. I was told the alternator was checked at the shop but after removing the vehicle from BI Toyota 2 separate auto professionals hooked up an electrical meter to show that it was clearly faulty, they each laughed saying that BI Toyota has no clue what they are doing. So, my ride sat for 4 months, was never diagnosed/fixed, sold, fixed in 2 hours for less than $100! This was the single most unprofessional experience of my entire life. read more

They have the worst service department ever.. I have a Chevy truck that needs service and it takes two weeks to get an appt. I made one, called to confirm and they said it was cancelled.. Now another two weeks to get me in. I was planning on buying a new Chevy truck, but because of this being the only service center, I will NOT be buying Chevy..... Great service appointment for my new truck. It was my first service,5000 miles, and the staff there from the service desk to the mechanics were friendly and professional. Both shuttle drivers were prompt and allowed me to have no bumps in my busy work schedule. A.Okuda got me through the paperwork quickly and I was back on the road smiling. I am a operation manager of 5 retail stores myself and I was impressed with how well the whole service center was run. It was really busy with some walk in and a few agitated customers but the counter staff handled them correctly and got all of through the process as happily as possible. Ok let me start from the beginning...We bought a corolla in 2009 with 150 miles on it (basically brand new), we loved it...the first car bought through loans...8months later I drove it off the road and basically damaged one of the alloy rims...come to find out that particular style rims were no longer made at Toyota nor on rims.com or any other site for that matter...been riding black used tires (which i love since i cannot damage them any further :) )... We've had to purchase very high costly oil changes (we drive a lot!) through this company until we paid it off in 2013...after a oil change we received the car with a large scrapped metal like dent in the body and we called them out on it and they said "No we never do that, that was there", i was like "Um No that was NOT there I would have noticed it "-it was on the drivers passenger near gas tank...they reluctantly took it back fixed it and they covered it, which was nice... Now in nov 2016 we had trouble with "transmission issues" car still ran so we decided to order a refurbished (told was refurbished at the time of purchase) transmission....we waited almost a month before we called this company to see what was going on with the shipment of the transmission (we foresaw when the transmission would finally give out)...they were like "well looks like the middle man didn't do his part and so now the part will be ordered now"...so if we didn't call we would have been waiting on a part that wouldn't have been shipped period. We waited another month and a half before getting the transmission. they took 3 days to install the transmission...called us to see if we wanted to do the clutch while they were in the transmission, we called them back, which took forever finally got a woman who supposedly got the message to the mechanic that we wanted the clutch to be installed...I go to pick it up and the guys, with horrible customer service skills, says to me "NO we called you you guys said no need" and i said, "NO we called back a million times, spoke to a woman and told her for you guys to do it"...he repeats that same lame ass statement...i just say "whatever" We have paid way over $4,000 for this transmission...then a week later, it leaks transmission fluid all over my garage...we call they send a tow truck and graciously paid for it (we live 60 miles away to and from)...they worked on it and "fixed it"...they end up charging us for this leak problem stating the warranty with the recently transmission doesn't cover seals outside of the transmission...bunch of bullshit! A day later, they called my spouse and said "come and pick up the car, it is ready"...my spouse hitch hiked to them and come to find out the car wasn't ready! The manager easily gave my spouse a rental car (they paid for it) and the car was ready 2 days later (total of 3 days). Pick the car up and Today we found that the same leak leaked again oh and they charged us another $250 for the "leakage work" since the warranty only covered "refurbished" and we bought a used one, WE TOLD THEM WE WANTED A REFURBISHED ONE and they didn't listen... if they fixed it the first time why is my car still leaking tran axle fluid still...WTF! NO longer are we going to BIG ISLAND TOYOTA they are a bunch of rip offs! read more

"We can't get your car into the shop because you don't have an appointment," is what the service writer just informed me after I stood on the highway in the pouring rain after my car broke down the THIRD time AFTER they allegedly fixed it. Thousands of dollars and months without my car and I'm back for the third time with the original problem to my vehicle. The first time I picked it up from here I drove it less than 200 miles before it broke down with the same problem. I picked it up the SECOND time from Big Island Toyota less than a week ago and have driven her only 561 miles when she broke down in the middle of a busy highway in the torrential rain AGAIN. And I get here and am told that I don't have an appointment so they won't fix my car? Really? . So far I have run out of water and had no food for over two weeks because of the incompetence of Big Island Toyota's Service Department. I had to start a medical regimen all over, causing numerous physical problems. I'm getting very tired of the Big Island Toyota Diet. This review is of the service department only not the sales dept. The service manager needs to be replaced! Customer service is not a top priority at Toyota. I was told my part needed to be ordered for a wareanty repair. 3 months later no call. I call and speak with the customer service worker and was told my part was not ordered and to come down to the service dept so they cold look at my car again. I do not have time to waste. I am a first time buyer and I must say my experience wasn't what I expected. The first time I went to the dealership with my parents to inquire about purchasing a new vehicle off the bat I got the cold shoulder almost to where I felt like they didn't want to help at all. After asking for help and seeing what they could do for me the price and interest was ridiculous to even work with and let me remind you they wanted me to put at least $10k down with a big disappointment decided that I would just wait until my credit score is back up and try again. A year later I decided to go in to look at a few vehicles and I don't know if it's because me and my husband looks young but we had to go find a sales man ourselves for help. So here I am with $5k cash for a down payment and with a credit score of 647. What did Toyota do for me? Well they told me with my score, the down payment my interest rate would be 19%/$750/ month! WHAT A FRICKN RIP OFF! The sale rep who helped me continuously called telling me to take the truck home today, all we would need is $8K down then they will be able to bring the monthly payments down and the interest rate would be 16%. That is still ridiculous, so I went to the bank to see if I could make the loan there but a break down for the truck amount was needed. I went back to Toyota told the sales guys that I was going through the bank and he tells me and my husband straight to our face YOUR NOT GOING TO GET ACCEPTED. How hurt and frustrated I was after that, first of TOYOTAS customer service sucks!! They are lucky that Toyota in general sells itself. After being discouraged by the rep I was at the point where I didn't even want them to have my money! But like I said Toyota sells itself and I needed a reliable vehicle for me and my husband and future family to come. I spoke with my bank clerk who helped me get the loan and she was just as upset as me, she even spoke with Toyota and shared how unhappy I was. I did get approve for the loan but I did not want any of the credit going to the sales man who helped me. Spoke with manager of Toyota and he was extremely nice apologized on behalf of the sales rep and ended providing us with a $250/gift card and free rain guards. Although they provided me with good customer service at the end I felt like it was necessary still for me to share my experience. I feel that TOYOTA should properly teach and educated their sales team with proper customer service skills. I work in an environment where customer service is so vital to the business. read more

very disappointed with the service i got from Big Island Toyota. I am a first time buyer and was looking for the perfect car that i could afford. The salesman was nice at first, let me test drive a car i was looking at, and as we went onto the paperwork, i felt uncomfortable. after he pulled my credit, which was good btw, there was a factor that was their concern. he said the banks will not want to work with me because i dont have a track record of borrowing large amounts of money. it was either i get a cosigner, or put a down payment of 30%. and thats it. he didnt suggest any other options for me, or suggest a lower price vehicle, or even offer to show me a car that i "might" get approved for. i felt as if he wanted to get us over with so he can find other customers who can make him more money! i'm glad it didnt work out with this sAlesman bcuz he did not deserve any comission from me, at least! read more
