In addition to having really stand-out good food, this restaurant has a unusually cool vibe, more than most other restaurants in the area. It's kind of cool and sexy. It's modern but warm and intimate. relaxed and unpretentious but unmistakably high-quality. There's just something about the cozy, candle-lit tables... where you can order a fish-filet under a crystal chandelier... it says "modern romance" in a way that's hard to describe. At any rate, this is the restaurant my (now) boyfriend took me to the first time I realized that we were definitely on a DATE, not just friends out having a drink. All of their food and drinks are spectacular. The pretzel bread and butter is amazing. Their lamb wontons - and especially the sauce- is my favorite thing on the menu. I don't think Service Bar is capable of creating a dish that isn't blow-your-mind amazing. Each item is a masterpiece. Chef Avishar's creativity and skill bursts through every bite. This is the best food in Columbus, hands down. The menu consists of their knock-out most popular items, which are always on the menu, along with a "secret kitchen" menu of playful, inventive dishes that changes weekly (usually). While you truly cannot go wrong with anything on the menu, I'd recommend the beef short rib as a general crowd-pleaser. The beef is ridiculously tender, packed with umami flavor, and the pillowy bao buns that accompany it are a dream. Another crowd pleaser: the Service Bar Crunch. It's an elevated play on Taco Bell's Cheesy Gordita Crunch, suitable for even the most pretentious eater. Looking for something more adventurous? Close your eyes and just point to anything on the secret menu. You will not be disappointed (promise!). Or, try the Kati Roll: an explosion of flavor and competing textures inspired by Western Indian street food. The majority of their dishes seem to offer vegetarian (and sometimes vegan) and gluten free variations, so nobody misses out on the fun! They're being extra cautious during COVID, currently offering takeout only (and delivery via Uber Eats). What a gem of a find! Flavor profile is incredible. There's a south asian twist to the menu which I loved. This place has tons of options. A special menu AND added vegetarian menu makes it the perfect place for those with dietary restrictions! If you are vegetarian, it seems like they can accommodate at least 1/2 the menu to make veggie friendly! The ambiance is awesome but would recommend making a reservation early if you want to sit inside (seems like it fills up pretty quickly!) 4 stars (though probably should be 5) because while the Bombay toasty was good, I wish it was served hot! Meh... this place just didn't do for me what I thought it would. I had heard buzz from a few of my friends so we decided to go here together as a group for one of my friend's bday dinners. It's located near High St, right off Fifth. It's somewhat confusing because there really isn't signage there. Or at least I didn't see a sign that said "Service Bar." I was also unclear on where to park. Luckily I saw two of my friends walking in so I stopped and rolled down my window and asked them where to park. There is a parking lot right next door but the only options left all had signs that warned about towing. None of them referenced Service Bar parking. So I took a chance, parked at one of those spots and then ensured through the host when I walked in that I was okay to park there, which he confirmed was okay. My friends and I were seated at a semi-circle booth. It was a good set up for a group of 6. Our waitress was nice and attentive and shared the Happy Hour specials with us. They had a Sauvignon Blanc for $7 and a Red Blend for $8 (if I'm remembering pricing correctly). I opted for the white (which is unlike me, but it sounded good!). It was good. I'd be up to try the red next time. When it came to ordering food, I knew I had to try the Cheesy Brisket Crunch since I had heard a lot about it and it was highly pictured on Yelp reviews. I had also heard about the Cheese Poof as well. Luckily for me, a friend ordered the cheese poof and let me try some. I was underwhelmed. She got the veggie option and the Poof part was rough and crackly. I almost choked on it. And I wasn't the biggest fan of the cheese. It was just okay. Would much rather prefer tortilla chips with the cheese dip. Our meals came out and unfortunately I felt the same way about my tacos. First off, for $17, you just get two tacos. However I will say that they are big enough to fill you up. But are they worth $17? No. They were average at best. I didn't at all like the brisket inside. I prefer pulled brisket and this had cubed brisket with quite a few fatty/weird tasting pieces. It just ruined it for me. If they would change it to a juicy, tender pulled brisket, I'd maybe be a fan. But I didn't really like it at all. Lastly, because it was my friend's birthday, they gave her a free dessert. Not sure what it was called but it was essentially cake with raspberry creme or something on top? She let us each have a bite and I didn't like it. It wasn't that sweet and the cake part was cold. And it's really hard to mess up dessert for me! I would say to come here for the atmosphere. It had a hip, modern, vibe and the decor is great. I could see myself coming here for a Happy Hour in the future. I could also see this as a great place to grab drinks as a "first date" kinda thing too. We were excited to check this place out after it was finally reopening roughly 2 years after COVID shut it down. I was aware that the head chef had moved on to Joyas in Worthington and the new team would have big shoes to fill, but wanted to go in with an open mind. It's clear from the menu's super slim selection and price points that they've shifted toward more of a traditional focused fine dining approach and avoided the experimental and eccentric dishes they were known for. Across the four dishes we tried (crudo, gnudi, risotto, halibut), only the risotto tasted adequately seasoned and got a "yum" reaction from either of us, everything else was just ehhhh. Like take the gnudi -- they're supposed to be the light, fluffy cousin of gnocchi. These ones were way too doughy (maybe too much flour or just overkneaded?) and had a consistency closer to a fairly dense buttermilk biscuit and were served over a really mild squash sauce. It was like something I'd make for someone recovering from a stomach bug who didn't want any strong flavors. The halibut on the other hand was just straight up severely lacking salt across all of its components unfortunately, one of those mortal failures that can't really be worked around. Drinks and service on the other hand were great, no complaints there at all. I think if anything I'd go back just to get another one of the barrel aged old fashioneds. read more

You know that a restaurant is amazing when it's food makes you laugh out loud with joy. That may sound like a weird reaction, but it's precisely the one that I had upon taking my first bite of Service Bar's crispy ribs. The flavors and textures resulted in an experience that was truly unique and revelatory. Nor was that sensation limited to the ribs. Across the board, Service Bar redefines what dinner can be. The brains behind the operation, Chef Avishar Barua is incredibly talented, and it shows in the familiar yet compelling menu. There has been plenty of ink spilled discussing the cheesy brisket crunch, but that's because it captures so well where he excels: taking something seemingly familiar and making it go beyond what you ever thought possible. Even a fairly traditional rendition of a dish, for example the lamb dumplings, shines in execution and presentation. Others, like the carrots 10 ways are on the opposite side of the spectrum, not even pretending to be anything familiar (other than using carrots of course). Finally, Service Bar is part of Middlewest Spirits, so it should come as no surprise that the bar program is similarly excellent. It's been over six months since we last visited Service Bar, but their quality of food and craft cocktails continue to be cutting-edge. We started with the cheese & poof, lamb wontons, Sichuan vegetable wontons, and smoked wings. I didn't find the Sichuan vegetable wontons to be a flavor I enjoy, so I would not get it again. The other apps were delicious. To share we had the vegetarian crunch, cheesy brisket crunch, scallops, and ribs. Some of the scallops were a little over-cooked, but you can't go wrong with the crunches or the ribs. Some of the craft cocktails can be on the strong side, so choose wisely if you are not into those kinds of drinks. I had the Seeltoven and my husband had to finish it for me. Finally, make a reservation! It gets extremely busy. Also, be prepared to share tables with other groups of people. They have large community tables (aka counter seating) and standard seating. Service was spotty and it took 30 minutes to seat our group even though we had a reservation and arrived on time. They did comp the cheese & pouf for $11 out of $500 tab. They have some work to do here because with a packed bar there's really nowhere to wait without getting scolded by waitstaff that you're in the way. Sigh. We ordered almost half the menu with our group of 6. Let me start by saying the atmosphere is very cool and the menu has an interesting offer of choices. We had a reservation on a Thursday evening for 6 people and it wasn't very busy which left me wondering why our service was so poor. We had to walk up to the bar to ask for things just to get service. Our food was ok....could have been better but our appetizer of chicken wings that were still raw kind of ruined the rest of it. They were apologetic of course and took it off our bill but gross!! They also gave us a dessert on the house because of this mistake and the lack of service we had. Excellent return to Service Bar after their long closure. Welcome back. The new chef was hitting on all cylinders -- we tried the Jerusalem artichokes, the beets and burrata, the halibut, and the venison. Terrific, across the board. The Jerusalem artichokes were cooked exactly as they should be, and the eggplant miso purée complemented them perfectly. The seasoning on the beets turned that dish from pedestrian to standout. And the venison was medium rare, as it should be, with the accompaniments balancing the dish and elevating it. My wife's only complaint on the halibut was that it wasn't served with a spoon so she could capture all of the sauce. Good service. One minor criticism: the restaurant was too dark to truly see the great plating done by the chef. They need better lighting at the table. We'll be back. read more

I went to service bar with my husband, and man oh man was it delicious! First, parking - I parked in the lot right next to it. The signs can be really confusing (seems like sometimes you can park and other times you can't) but the staff were really helpful when I asked if I could park there. We started off with cocktails. I got the bourbon coquito - mostly because I love horchata, and it was a very horchata-like drink. It was good! Khachapuri - Oh. Man. Just imagine soft bready goodness with egg, bacon, and cheese... with some subtle sweetness. It. Is. Delicious. Please get it. Whole chicken service - absolutely delicious. Ok so back story. This is actually the chef's mom's recipe!!! First of all, this is a humongous dish!!! It can definitely feed 3-4 people. Honestly since we got the khachapuri, I think this meal could've fed 4 people easily. I think if there were 2 starving people, then MAYBE they can finish the whole chicken service. This includes all parts of the chicken - wing, breast, thigh, etc, but cooked in various ways. It also includes this flat sourdough bread thing that's also delicious (it's slightly too salty in certain pieces, but can easily be evened out when mixed with the chicken). I would recommend eating the fried parts of the chicken first because it's super crispy (although since we had lots of leftovers, I did get to eat re-heated fried chicken, and the flavor was still good, but obviously no longer crispy). There was also sliced chicken, and shredded chicken that had lots of spices (but not spicy.. but more of cumin and other spices). It was mixed with some cauliflower. This is the best restaurant & bar in Columbus. The atmosphere is inviting with classic finishes from little hexagon tiles on the floor to the old school sinks in the bathrooms and the gorgeous wooden bar. The cocktails are top notch (no surprise). I had the old fashioned flight that had 4 different takes on the classic drink. 1. Barrel Aged Old Fashioned 2. Sassafras 3. Not sure but had some anise / root beer notes 4. Ancho Rum (excellent with the cheese & poof) We enjoyed the cheese & poof that came as a mound of pork rinds over a cool and smokey pimento cheese dip. Next, the Crispy Ribs (star of the show for me) were perfectly cooked and and coated with the most amazing "commander taos" sauce you've ever had. Fried broccoli and some crunchy black radish were a nice finish. I had the MWS burger & fries. The burger was an elevated take on a classic burger build. I was happy that it came out a perfect medium. The potato roll was the perfect vehicle for this juicy burger. I'll also dare to say these fries were among the best I've ever had. If I had to guess I'd say they were brined and fried multiple times. They were thick cut & flavorful. We finished off the nice with the night with the cookies & cream which was a really fun play on "dirt." The cream was silky and just sweet enough paired with a crispy chocolate crumble that could only be topped off with a surprise carbonated candy finish. We laughed while eating this one. I had booked a table well in advance, which by the way was the best table in the restaurant - the distillery behind our table as we overlooked the entire place. A big communal table in the middle, individual tables along one wall, two booths and a semi private room which seats a larger group. Our waiter, Chris was excellent. Primed with knowledge about the menu and cocktails. I asked for a non sweet cocktail. The bar surprised me with one of their own inventions and it was perfect. Two bottles of water on the table, still and sparkling - love that. The food has an Asian influence which transforms the American cuisine into having an elegant twist. The menu had an Instagram account for users to check out the specials. What a great idea. Each item had a full description, splendid photo and the price. I ordered the Twice cooked scallops with TC sunchoke, SB Lao Gan Ma, Chili Soy and Shiso. It was amazing so many flavors and a hint of spicy that warmed the back of your throat. My only one complaint, 3 scallops for $29. I felt for that price there should have been 5. Mongolian glazed short ribs with Boa Knots - a huge plate of meat with outstanding zing! The meat tacos, two per order, big portions. The vegetable taco was tremendous, would never have known there was no meat. Creme Brûlée Cheesecake dessert wow! I've avoided Service Bar because I thought it would be uptight, pretentious, and fussy. What I found was a gorgeous restaurant that's dark, cozy, and approachable. Like, it was so good I'm shook. And the gold. Y'all, there are beautiful gold accents everywhere, and I am here for it. Gold tables, gold mirrors, gold toilet paper... jkjk on the tp. But alas: so much gold that my heart was exploding. The cocktails were delicious, of course. I'm a huge fan of Middle West's pumpernickel rye, and it made a tasty Manhattan for sure. The service was also really, really on point. Everyone was attentive but friendly and low-key. Then the menu... It was somehow very small but very inclusive of food allergies and preferences. When our server told me they have house-made gluten-free bread, I snarkily snickered to my friends, "They're about to thaw out some Udi's bread from the freezer and throw it on my plate." Luckily there was no crow to be found, and instead, I got to nosh on my delicious, from-scratch gluten-free bread. If you're not gf, I know that might not sound like much, but let me tell you: NOBODY MAKES THEIR OWN GF BREAD. Everybody in Columbus buys the same garbage gf products, and we're supposed to just shut up and like it. We went here for my husband's birthday. Great drink selection! Love the novelty of the "secret menu" and seeing the pictures of the secret food posted on instagram. The lamb dumplings were to die for. I could have sopped up every last drop of the juice left in the bottom of the dish. Also praise the gods of all things spicy- they were not scared (as many are around here) to bring the heat. The lamb and noodles were also spicy and delicious. My husband had some amazing concoction of pork and steamed dough like a deconstructed asian steamed pork bun. Lastly, for dessert we ordered a chocolate cake that came with all kinds of fixins like cocoa nibs, decadent vanilla bean icing, and a smooth ganache like substance. Calories shmalories. Expect your stuff to take time. Everything is made to order, calm down, stay awhile, enjoy being alive & being able to afford a great meal in a beautiful space. Don't be in rush to get anywhere, this should be your night's main event anyway. If you don't like something..tell them right away! They've always been more than accommodating to make something right. Become a regular by connecting, not by wanting to be one. Am I making sense? So many bad reviews/experiences are motivated by hanger and people being so fundamentally unhappy in their own lives that they take their pent-up aggression out in one review. The "roasted" squash was burned and the sauce that accompanied it was flavorless and the wrong texture for the pairing. The pork belly was actually an undercooked pork loin (someone should tell the show that pork needs to be a certain temperature to be safe). Service was solid and the cocktails were fine. Between this place and Comune (on Parsons Ave.) I always feel confident in recommending solid vegetarian food choices to friends and family when they visit. I completely stumbled on this place by accident with a friend. We were looking for good happy hours in the Short North and found this place on Yelp and decided to try it. Funnily enough, when they seated us they told us they really didn't have much of a happy hour discount, but we stayed anyways, intrigued by their cocktail menu. We soon realized that this place has a completely separate vegetarian menu and we were SO excited. We tried the Mongolian bao (5/5) and the cheese and poof (5/5) and both of those dishes blew our mind. I knew I had to come back and try more food so I did on a number of occasions. Other dishes I have tried since were the double crunch tacos (Service Bar's version of a Taco Bell cheesy Gordita crunch) (3/5), the cheesecake (5/5), and the dumplings (4/5). All dishes consistently have epic flavor depth and cool textures. Sitting at the bar vs at a table inside or outside is a neat experience. The bartenders are very fun to talk to and are very helpful with selecting a cocktail. The place at night has a speakeasy vibe to it, which is very cool. Highly highly recommend everyone - meat eaters and vegetarians - to try this place! I absolutely love coming here. Definitely a hidden gem of Columbus. Every ingredient is made in house and the attention to detail is phenomenal. The menu is always rotating and you'll find creative drinks throughout. And the food!! Seriously some of the best food you can get anywhere. Creative but most importantly flavorful. So many restaurants focus on creativity at the expense of actual flavor. That's not the case here. I've ate both in-person (2019) and take out during COVID. The Not Pad Thai + lamb wontons is a MUST, and the wings, and short ribs. The Brown Butter Rice Krispy with Miso Butterscoth is probably the best dessert I've had--UMAMI, BABY. My bf loves the cheesy brisket crunch, their burger is the BEST in town. So disappointing. Loved this place before Covid and was excited to go back. The menu is very limited. There are 2 appetizers offered, one of which was "unavailable". In our party of 4 some liked their meal, others did not. The service was the worst part. We were in an enclosed room and multiple times had to go out searching for someone because our server was MIA. Also, the wine pour was a complete joke. $15 a glass, got about 2 oz. Not kidding. Won't be going back anytime soon. read more

The bar serves great cocktails including a rotating old fashion flight with varying spirits and inspirations. I've loved the Cheesy Brisket Crunch tacos several times cuz they're delicious and they fill you up. I had the BEST time here. We had a reservation and were seated immediately and our server, Chris, was great- super knowledgeable and friendly. The interior is stunning. We came in with high expectations based on the menu and reviews... It was not even close. If this restaurant was in LA, New York, or SF it would be out of business within 3-6 months. Service Bar is certainly trying to be on par with restaurants in those cities, emphasis on trying. The good: waitress was nice, the cauliflower appetizer was fantastic (only on vegetarian menu), and Red Cabbage Caesar was interesting. The bad: 1. Root to Stem/Carrots/10 roots (I have had this exact dish at all above cities plus Miami)... At service bar the taste was bad, the portion was so small for $16, 1/2 the size of all other places at comparable prices. The dish I was served was worth maybe 4 bucks. 2. Cheeseburger... Greasy, used kraft singles for cheese, and immediately after taking 1 bite I new this would make my stomach upset 3. Snapper Fish special... just tasted fishy, zero flavor, something I could have spent 3 minutes preparing and making myself. 4. The seating set up is dumb, this isn't Santa Monica. The place also could use mirrors or something on the walls. $120 bucks for a less than mediocre meal with no drinks or dessert? I don't mind paying that much for a good meal but this was greasy bar food and poor attempts at good dishes. Hopefully it closes soon and another place like Brassica will open here because it's a great location and space. Fancy schmancy, my partner took us here for our anniversary. Bonus points for a surprising amount of vegetarian/vegan options and modifications that can be made. The staff were super friendly and full of good recommendations and knowledge about the menu. This isn't the kind of place I normally frequent and I did feel a bit like an imposter in the very high-brow atmosphere, but maybe that was just me! If this is the kind of thing you're into, it works for a special occasion. Be prepared for the bill! If you're a veggie and you do go, I highly recommend the Mongolian tofu! Service bar, ha! The service here was sub-par. Food/drinks was amazing but we can't get over the service. From the moment we walked in the hostess was so rude. We were late, I get that, but we also called ahead to confirm they would hold our table- only to arrive and they had given to another couple. So luckily there were spots at the bar, not the ideal spot but we will take it. We sit down, were served water and received quite the stink-eye. I thanked the guy who poured the water was completely ignored. 1 minute later he can over to take our drink order, again he was very rude. At this point my husband and I were ready to walk out... we were not going to let this poor service effect our anniversary dinner. Our group of 4 had a tremendous happy hour experience last Friday at Service Bar, the trendy restaurant bar brain child of Middle West Spirits. Our first impression walking into Service Bar was one of being transported back into another era, with their beautiful old wooden bar complimenting the buildings original architecture. The décor was both cozy and classy and the bottle shop located in front of the door's entrance was fun to browse through. We started off with cocktail recommendations from our waitress, a classic Old Fashioned ($2 off during happy hour!) and one of their refreshing creations, The Endless Summer, which felt very fitting as January has lasted a literal eternity. The Old Fashioned was one of the best I've tasted and we loved The Endless Summer's refreshing cucumber, ginger and mint combination and its lovely presentation. For grub we tried the bestselling Cheesy Brisket Crunch, which was as fantastic and world altering as the staff led us to believe. Two crunchy corn tortillas, wrapped in Indian naan bread and topped with smoked brisket, lettuce and cheese, guac sauce. No way can you go wrong with this type of ingredient lineup but wow was it tastier than we could have imagined, especially the brisket which was so flavorful and tender. We were initially a bit worried that consuming 1 each would leave us hungry, but no one discussed food again until later that night. One of the suggestions I would give would be to make reservations ahead of your visit, as we arrived shortly after the 5 pm opening and all the smaller tables were already reserved and the bar full. The staff was very accommodating, never made us feel rushed and were happy to sit us at a long table until the reservations showed up at 6 but we would have loved the comfort of a table by scheduling ahead.
