We came to the Sesame Inn after shopping at Ross Park Mall with my family. The Sesame Inn had a very Asian theme and was clean and modern. The service was just ok. No one was really friendly or attentive. You did have the option of being served by a robot, which I thought was odd. The food was all just ok. We did General Tso and Chicken LoMein. The General Tso did not have a ton of flavor. The LoMein was ok as well. read more

We visited this new location at North Hills with my party, and the ambiance was beautifully laid out. It did look like something out of a movie scene, and it was extremely busy due to it being a Saturday night. Our server was this sweet lady who had tons of large party groups. She got us our water and took our appetizer orders. We got the Vegetable and Shrimp egg rolls, and they are on the larger side, so order 1 if it's just you. My sister and I split it one and were happy with that. The egg rolls come with sweet and sour sauce and a wasabi/horseradish dipping sauce. I could smell it for days; that stuff is so strong. It took a bit to get our orders in, but we were okay with that since we were all catching up with each other. We then placed our orders, and I got the Shrimp and Garlic Sauce meal and which stated it was on the spicier side, but it was a bit mild for my taste. Mind you, I like fiery spice, but it did keep me from sweating. We also got the Beef with mixed vegetables and the beef with string beans. Both dishes were tasty and not too spicy. This is great for people who can not handle too much spice. We were there for a bit, and we paid our bills and were out. The portions are huge, so we all left with boxes. 4 stars for sure! read more

My wife and I brought our daughter to Sesame Inn for dinner this evening. This is a long time favorite place for us, as we all love this restaurant. Truly, this is something here for everyone. Sesame Inn has been in business for decades and moved into this new space in March of 2025, and I can say that they didn't miss a beat. This is a beautifully appointed dining room. The service is prompt and efficient. The food is better than ever. We started with a pot of hot Oolong tea, and Crab Rangoon for an appetizer. Delicious! My wife had the Pad Thai which she thoroughly enjoyed. I had Sweet and Sour Shrimp with fried rice, and our daughter ordered three types of sushi. We couldn't have been happier with our meals. We never went to the original location, but this location has great decor and is a big space! I got the wonton soup...great! We shared the beef fried rice and two sushi rolls. All 4x bad - take out: didn't get the correct food I ordered; next time chicken was not all the way cooked; last takeout chicken was again not cooked fully and was tough and chewy; in-restaurant dining server was rude and salty. I've been a fan of Sesame Inn for a long time. I always have a good experience and the food is delicious. I recently visited their new location in the Block at Northway. Service was a bit slow, but the food was tasty as always. I was in the mood for sushi so I went with a spicy tuna roll, eel and avocado roll, and a yellowtail avocado roll. All were tasty. Probably the best "American" style Chinese food spot in the North Hills, and that still stands up even after their relocation to the Northway Block! I've gotten their takeout a few times, from both the former and current locations, and each time the service has been prompt and right on target. The portions are large, the food is hot and flavorful, and they have a nice extensive menu with lots of options. I'm especially a fan of their chicken and eggplant, kung pao chicken, beef lo mein, amazing chicken, and pork with garlic sauce (as well as the steamed pork dumplings and egg rolls). They hit all the right notes of comfort food. While I haven't dined in at their new space, it does look beautiful inside! read more

I visited this place again at their new location. It's more beautiful than the previous one. With some Asian decoration which gives it a nice ambiance. The service was timely and friendly. I ordered my favorite dishes: sour and spicy soup and Peking Duck. Both were delicious. The service forgot to bring the sauce. I had to remind him. Otherwise the service was nice and attentive. I have been to the Sesame Inn several times over the years as this is one of my parents' favorite places. It should be noted that they moved to their current location about a year ago, and so many of the reviews and pictures posted on Yelp are out of date. The new Northway Mall location - I grew up here, so I'm going to call it Northway Mall no matter what name they slap on the sign - is well appointed, bright, and generally a nice place to be. It was clean, and the service was fast. What always lets me down is the food. I have never had a bad meal here, but I've never left feeling that it was particularly good either. It's very basic, Americanized, and bland. This time around I wanted to try a curry, but they apparently reduced the size of their menu as part of the relocation, and the curries are no longer offered. Instead, I ordered one of the dishes I saw pictured on Yelp; Chengdu Spicy Chicken. It looked great online, but in reality, it was dry, boring, and not at all spicy. The egg drop soup I started with was actually pretty good. My parents were happy with their whatever-in-brown-sauce, so it was still worth the visit. However, this place would not be my first pick for Asian food in the area. read more

Over the years, I have eaten at Sesame Inn several times because it is convenient. I try something different , each time, in the hopes that I will find something that is mediocre at best. A few days ago I ordered the seafood soup and it was absolutely inedible. The broth seemed to be made of runny, partially cooked egg. After 1 spoonful, I threw the entire quart of soup in the trash. I didn't feel terrible about wasting the seafood because there were only 2 pieces of shrimp in the soup. read more

The Sesame Inn inside The Block Mall, on McKnight Rd has good food, good service and has a more attractive interior than at its former location. The only con is that now you have to enter the mall and take an elevator or escalator up to the 2nd floor to the restaurant. It's not as quick to pick up a take out order. You can access the restaurant from either side of the mall's main doors to go up to the 2nd floor. Despite the restaurant's new location, we still enjoy the Sessame Inn Restaurant in Pittsburgh's North Hills. read more

This place is awful. For starters, I ordered off of the lunch menu. I pointed to it, on the lunch menu. The server took my order, that she read off of the lunch menu. When the check comes, our 2 lunch menu items were literally twice the price. They charged me for 2 dinner entrees. Server did not tell me, manager said he would not honor the price. It's really shady, and the manager is a jerk. I got General Tso's for my kids to share. The chick was old reheated garbage. I get this location is in the mall. But considering it is a sit down spot I expected better quality. It is nothing but mall food, and it tastes like garbage. I come here whenever I get service at the Toyota dealership, just because it's there. But the food is also pretty good. The curry Thai dishes have nice flavor and the ingredients are always fresh. The egg roll was crispy and savory. The pad thai I will say isn't their best dish (I'd go to a Thai place) as the flavor is a tad on the sour side, but the noodles were good. I'm always seeking authentic Chinese food and came here because I saw a version of cumin chicken on the menu. The place is nicely set up with a somewhat upscale décor, so upon entering I felt it might be legit. It was also really busy for a mid-weekday lunch. I asked the waiter if their Chengdu Spicy Chicken was similar to Szechuan Cumin Chicken and he said he didn't know what cumin was, but it was a listed ingredient in this dish - ohhh boy! I started with egg drop soup and ordered this Chengdu Spicy Chicken entrée any way. The egg drop soup was made with some soup of chicken veggie soup with those perfectly cut square veggies in it, like what come in canned soups. It also had one piece of random tofu in it, which was odd. Flavor was just OK. When it comes to the thing I drove all the way there for, the Chengdu Chicken, it was overfried, even brown in spots. The Szechuan peppercorns weren't smashed or broken, they were put in whole and there were a lot in there, so many that I kept biting into them. They're fine to eat occasionally, but not that many. And there was hardly any cumin or other flavors to this dish... it was VERY DISAPPOINTING! This is far from an authentic Chinese restaurant, it's the typical American Chinese food and it's mediocre at that. Definitely would never return. read more

3.5 stars overall. The ladies working the counter where you first walk in and wait to be seated weren't welcoming. They were too busy shuffling through paperwork and talking with each other to greet me. I was literally standing there alone with no one else in the area staring at them waiting to be acknowledged. She turned and said something to my waiter in whatever language they speak then they both looked at me and laughed. It was VERY AWKWARD AND RUDE. Aside from the awkward first 10 minutes there, I decided to stay anyway. My waiter was very nice and fast so I overtipped especially since he gave me plastic utensils with my left overs so I could eat them in my hotel later. My food came out fresh, fast, and hot. The Crab Rangoons were delicious and perfectly done with a nice dipping sauce. The egg roll was very chewy, bland, and gross. I had 1 bite and sent it away. The hot oil I ordered was nice and went well with the meal. The general tsos was perfectly cooked and a good portion for lunch. I had left overs. Eh, it was alright. I didn't try that many items, but the menu definitely seems overpriced and the portions don't make up for it. I tried their pan fried pork dumplings and dumpling sauce. These dumplings were extremely doughy with a thick casing. The dough didn't have any flavor to it didn't have any pan fried crispiness that some places serve their dumplings with. The meat was alright. Not enough of it, but it was seasoned pretty well and tasted alright. The sauce was forgettable (it was on the sour side with not much sweetness) and the portion was okay. All in all, pretty mediocre experience. Food was alright but nothing exciting. Probably won't come back for more. read more
