The falafel and hummus were tasty but I was upset that she told me two orders of falafel is a total of 8 pieces (4 per order). I grew up visiting Sesame Seed with my family for Middle Eastern food, but it's the "Sesame Seed Salad" with Feta that has kept me ordering it to-go still to this day. Having not had a dinner meal here in years, I can only speak to the lunch menu which covers your basic Lebanese mezze: hummus, tabouli, baba ganoush, foul and you can get sandwiches with kibbee, falafel, or kafta. I haven't had the kafta recently, but I've been satisfied with everything else I named through several to-go orders over the entirety of the pandemic. I do add Sesame Seed to my list of recommendations for Lebanese bites in Danbury. The decor is not everyone's cup of tea but if you have a bookworm kid, they may love it as much as I did growing up. This is my favorite local place for middle eastern food. I love the hummus and baba ganouche. One thing I always get is the Sesame Seed Salad. It has a great lemony dressing and sesame seeds and plenty of feta cheese. Always a winner. The atmosphere in the restaurant is great too, with lots of collectible items on the shelves. My husband was told at his office to come try it out, knowing our love for good Mediterranean eats. Also Came on the recommendation of my stylist. But, unfortunately we never got to try it. Walked in and was told to sit anywhere. Waited at-least 10 minutes. Some staff was cleaning other tables or doing things around, but no one ever came to our table. As we were leaving, a gentleman said "thank you".... but I quickly turned around and let him know that no one ever even acknowledged us. Set in a nice cozy home with both Italian and Mediterranean specialities, the decor for the place is quite interesting. The staff were attentive and in fact felt like its run by a family. We dropped in here for lunch and ordered falafel salad, meat salad and chicken wrap along with few appetizers. Among the ones ordered,all of us loved the baba ghanoush. The falafel surprisingly lacked any flavor and looked and tasted like it were over fried. The chicken wrap is decent and the meat kebab is great! Also we found it surprising that they do not have any Mediterranean rice pilaf.But they had brown rice which is a healthy alternative. All in all,I couldn't get over the fact that this Mediterranean place had a not-so-good falafel!! May be we should have tried some of their seafood or Italian dishes to get a hang of their awesome taste as described by many yelpers in their reviews. read more

Even cooler and nostalgic inside. Worth a visit just just to look around. Great selection for all palates I went for a gluten free special by the chef. Sesame salad, hummus homemade obviously very good, the a vegetarians : broccoli, zucchini, spinach, onions, mushrooms, string beans, carrots, tomatos on a brown rice. All cooked perfectly. We flew into LaGuardia after a flight cancellation. We had no time to stop. Got to our hotel in Danbury. I was a little hangry and needed to eat. One problem-it was 9:45pm and we didn't want to eat at a chain. Drove to, then past a pizza place as the neighborhood looked a bit sketchy and no place to park. Pulled into a parking spot a little ways away and did a Yelp search for open places. This came up and it was close-plus I knew I'd get vegan or vegetarian options. It was close to closing. We were seated and our orders taken. I ordered the vegetarian plate, made vegan, and my wife the lamb shish kabob. Her salad came out. It looked delicious. Then came the mains. Her rice was cold (and quickly reheated) and they were out of tabouli but substituted babaganoush instead. So glad they did! More in a moment... The pita was the weakest part of the meal but still good. The hummus perfect with lots of tahini and the babaganoush? I'd marry it if I could! Best I've had in the U.S. Our server pointed out it wasn't smokey-boy was that a treat! Silky, smooth, perfect. The falafel was good but wasn't as green inside as I like-still yummy. I ate some of my wife's grilled vegetables and they were perfect. The lamb was gone fast and the rice a nice puffy type. Had a nice glass of Shiraz. We paid and stayed until we finished. This small staff operation can not be faulted for the long waits between seating and ordering. The dining room is a one waitress show. This is an epic task. Since there is limited seating and the low price points I doubt this place could support a much larger staff. It doesn't seem to slow down business because for a Monday at 8:00pm they are nearly at 50% capacity. Once I ordered my "half and Half" humus babaganoush came out fast and with a huge amount of pita. It was very good definitely scratch made. I ordered the falafel appetizer as well which came withy entree the meat combo with Kafka and Kibee which were both excellent. The falafel was flavorful and crunchy. All were not bad scratch made with fresh herbs and ingredients. The salad was beautiful and ample. Oh gosh, Sesame Seed. I have been coming here for years, and never tire of their food. The décor is a bit eclectic and at times dusty, but look past that for the food-or just order take out! The humus is the best I have had anywhere and the consistency is perfect. The tabbouleh as well is fantastic and incorporates bunches of fresh parsley. On the side of each main you receive a small Sesame Seed salad too, and while simple, is always freshly crisp with a delicate dressing. Two stand-outs are the salmon (which is cooked perfectly every single time) and, well, any of the pies. My personal favorite is always the harvest pie, though it is not always available. Husband and I were around the upstate New York area for my baby brother's college graduation and thought we'd drive around to explore nearby states. Ended up being really hungry and found this establishment during our wandering travels. Came in around 1:30pm and it was relatively empty shy of 3 sets of customers. We ordered a hummus and pita as an appetizer to kick time off. The pita was incredibly stale and rubbery hard. The hummus was decent, albeit a little water, which I guess balanced out the stale pita. I have to laugh as the menu spells it as homus. The staff was incredibly friendly and made a lot of accommodations for us which we are very grateful for. The decor was very... colorful. Definitely very interesting and varied and will keep you rather entertained while you wait for your food. Definitely a good conversation starter. The salad was fresh and crisp, but there was a small puddle of water at the bottom of both our bowls by the very end. I ordered a steak sandwich, and oh man it was the bomb dot com. So good and juicy meat, perfectly cooked, on top of a soft buttery toasted sesame bun. The portion size was generous and I could only finish half of it. My husband got the harvest pie. Portion size also huge, being 4x4x3 inch cut. However this was quite bland and mushy and left a bit to be desired. Serious value for price though. $31.80 before tip. We ordered 2 entrees with a side salad, hummus and pita, and a chocolate stout. Worth a visit. Cute unique little place with decent food and a great bang for your buck. read more

What a cool place with way too much stuff on the walls for me to digest as I was passing through. Very quiet and old building, easy to park, WiFi, and good service by a few people. Vegetarian options, the food is OK, but the service can be very poor. Everyone seems to rave about this place, but after going there at least three times, I haven't been overly impressed. There are some vegan options, but when I've inquired about what's vegan, it's almost like the staff seemed annoyed by this question. This seems strange for a place that's supposedly caters to vegetarians and vegans. As for the food I have had, the hummus and pita bread was good. The falafel was okay. I've had some of their salads and again, I wasn't impressed. A lot of the food seemed very bland. The service is alright, but I went there with a big group once and the staff was very inattentive and seemed irritated that we were there. (not to mention they opened for dinner about 15 minutes late) This also happens to be the time I went there and we were given a menu that had very few (maybe 2 or 3) vegan options and the staff didn't want to be accommodating in helping me find something I could eat. I usually won't mark places down for decor, but as others said, this place is kinda musty and dusty. I'd expect more for a place with such "rave" reviews. All in all, I won't go here again unless some other friends want to. It's mediocre at best, as far as I'm concerned. 3-stars is a generous rating. read more

I need to step up and defend Sesame Seed after reading the ridiculous complaint about the lamp. I have lived in NYC for 12 years now (spoiled by good food at any hour) and traveled the world over, and Sesame Seed is STILL MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT, warts and all. This family-owned restaurant is probably the only consistently inspiring, delicious and healthy fare in all of northern Fairfield County, and they care deeply about the quality of fresh and delicious product filling the bellies of their adoring fans who, like me, have been paying homage for decades. I hope this absolute gem of Danbury stays open until I'm old, toothless all I can EAT is their delicious hummus! The only way I manage to live so far away from this place is that Mr. Sahadi's on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn is a friend of Mr. Chaber and their hummus recipe is pretty much identical (though Sahadis does offer a SPICY version which is worth trying - just ask my pregnant sister)! REGARDING STAFF: If you are an asshole and come into a place like this, you will be treated like an asshole. Sesame Seed is the great equalizer. For those of you who were lucky enough to experience Shopsin's on Carmine Street in Greenwich Village, this is a taste of that now defunct culinary legacy. EMBRACE IT, FOR THERE IS NO GOOD FOOD IN DANBURY. For more on Shopsin's, Netflix "I Like Killing Flies". REGARDING KITCHEN: Speaking of, I have been in the kitchen many, many times and it is CLEAN. I'm not sure what epicurean utopia some people expect from a 100+ year old house converted into a restaurant and in business for nearly half a century, but at least people aren't being murdered in the kitchen and sawed into pieces then thrown onto the highway in a garbage bag (like OTHER establishments in Danbury- you know who you are). It's very cozy place with good music that it's not so loud. Nevertheless, I must say that the place doesn't smell as it should, it smells old, likely due to the furniture and the wood in the place. The glasses are not so clean as they should, water stains, lipstick stain etc. Same goes for the cutlery. I left feeling scared I might get mono from the glass I drank my beer in. Other than that prices are adequate and beer selection is decent. Waitress is not very well educated on the beers they sell, so sometimes she doesn't know what beers they have in stock. My first experience with Sesame Seed was take-out for lunch during the week. A few coworker's were telling me I would like it since it has healthy options. I'm a meat and veggie girl. I called prior to picking up and two lunch orders were ready within my short drive there. The outside of the restaurant is very unassuming and quaint. Our orders were kafta, lamb kebab, hummus, and baba ganouj. I had the lamb and baba ganouj since I have a digestive aversion to hummus. It was SO GOOD. Seriously I could have eaten it with a spoon all day. Fortunately the order came with a huge bag of pita. My lamb kebab was tasty and I really enjoyed the grilled veggies. Wish there was more lamb, but it was a good portion of meat& veggie for $8 or whatever it was. 4 stars for food, promptness, and friendly staff. My family has been getting takeout from here for a good 10+ years. Always the sesame salad (small is almost big enough for two), with lots of pita (ask for extra) and hummus or half and half (hummus and baba ganoush). Makes a very nice light meal. Sesame seed is great little restaurant hidden in a house. Middle Eastern inspired dishes with eclectic decor. Mismatched plates and glasses, Fiestaware, and lots of fun things to look at on every wall and shelf. I felt like I was rummaging through my parent's basement, hey I had that Fisher-Price farm. Casual and friendly, all the customers seem to be regulars. I have never had a bad meal here. Falafel, tabouli, hummus, pastas, all very fresh and good. Not a strictly vegetarian menu, they offer chicken, lamb, seem to recall a beef dish as well. There is a nice mall, Danbury Fair, as well as Stew Leonard's and Trader Joe's in the area. Wonderfully unique restaurant with homey atmosphere and creative menu. This old house has been successfully transformed into a quaint dining experience, with eclectic dining rooms downstairs and upstairs. During my recent visit I tried the lamb kibbee which reminded me a lot of meatloaf with a lot of added spices and flavor. My girlfriend had a very unique dish which was incredibly good- the shrimp P & B. The shrimp were paired with slices of banana and pecans, absolutely delicious. We also tried the humus which was great, and the house salad was fresh, with a tangy house dressing. Our experience was both memorable and enjoyable, I might be tempted to give the place 5 stars if it weren't for the service. It seems that the place is a little understaffed.
