When my father passed away I found the watch he wore through my childhood among his belongings, much neglected, it had seen better days. I dropped off my watch for servicing at Setrak's Watch Repair as I wanted to support a local watchmaker instead of sending the watch off to Breitling for servicing. What a mistake that was. Setrak's cost to service my watch was over $1,000 and took over six weeks when Breitling's cost would have been $660 with the same servicing and replacement of parts (I confirmed this with Breitling). I feel ripped off and will not return. Do not recommend. read more

I called to check if they could take on a simple bracelet adjustment on a new watch and replace batteries in a couple vintage watches. They said, a few days. Now a week later, nothing. I had an older Tag watch that had stopped worked. Jose did an initial inspection and let me know what needed to be done to repair it (general service due to the age). He described what would be done, and was communicative throughout the process. When my ultra-thin Seiko watch needed repair, I had Setrak's find a way to adjust the band so it would fit my wrist better. This was an expensive and complex undertaking, at a time when my finances were stressed. This firm did great work, but in addition, stayed with me for over three years, very politely and professionally saying not to worry about payment, holding the watch until I could pay. They never pressured me. When I finally could pay, I offered to pay more so as to recognize their patience, , but they refused. This is true carriage trade service. Very grateful for the staff at Setrak's. I have a Cartier with some issues which couldn't quite be figured out; it ran well for weeks to months and then would stop for no good reason. Jose figured out the culprit - it was the last thing anyone would have ever considered to be the problem - and the watch has been running beautifully ever since. Mr. Setrak has cleaned and serviced several of my vintage watches, always getting them in perfect running order. Most recently, he salvaged my uncle's 1948 Rolex, which had been accidentally reduced to a heap of junk by my less-than-careful husband. When I gave its remains to Setrak, it was in pieces, missing the stem, crown, and sweep seconds hand. Setrak didn't promise anything except that he would try to find the missing parts - and by god, he did! It went from an incomplete pile of scrap to its former perfectly functioning vintage glory. Honestly it was "A Leap Of Faith" sending quite a valuable Swiss Watch to them, paying them with my Credit Card after the Repair and paying them to have it shipped back to me. When Setrak himself owned and ran this business, I was happy with the service, explanations, review of worn parts (gaskets, crystal, etc.), cost of service, etc. on our high quality mechanical Swiss watches. Setrak walked me through every step and was a good communicator. However, on Sept. 5, 2023, I took a lightly used (new to me) high quality mechanical Swiss watch into Setrak's, now under new ownership and operation, for examination and possible service. From start to finish on Oct. 3, 2023, it was a frustrating experience. No proactive communication from Jose. I called leaving messages that went unreturned. When he did answer the phone, he would say "I'll call you back in five minutes" and not call me back, at least three times. When I picked up the watch, the cost of a basic service had increased $150 over Mr. Setrak's price (from $750 to $900), no used/worn parts were shown to me (gaskets, main spring were replaced), and no itemized receipt was provided to me until I requested one and Jose scribbled a few notes on my claim check. The work may be good, but the communication and documentation could be a lot better. read more

Setrak is amazing. Several months ago my 1965 Rolex Daytona Cosmograph 6239 Stainless watch stopped working. The watch has been mine since my high school graduation in 1966, and over the years has grown into an extremely rare and valuable timepiece. Similar watches with the "floating Daytona" dial and pre-1967 pushers and bezel routinely go at auction for nearly $100K. I was nervous about having literally anyone touch my watch. After doing research I kept being pointed toward Setrak repair in San Francisco. So in the early fall 2018 I made an appointment and met Setrak for the first time. He examined the watch and assured me he could return my watch to fine condition without a problem. He quoted a fair price for this kind of work and said it would be a few weeks before I could have it back. When Setrak opened the watch he found the previous jeweler who had done an overhaul service in 2015 had used non-Rolex parts, botched an internal assembly and used the wrong part for the stem-winding barrel. In Setrak's words "They had butchered my watch...". Setrak was appalled. We discussed the problem and he committed to returning my watch to100% original parts since (in his words) that "...was the only way to do it correctly and he would not settle for less". However he did say it may take "...months to locate the parts and perform the repairs I needed to the standards necessary". Well, 3 1/2 months later the watch was done and the result was amazing. The cleaning, polishing and new crystal alone made the watch look absolutely pristine and brand new. The new gearing and winding stem mechanism is flawless and "winds like butter"...smooth as silk. The watch has run perfectly and literally not lost a second in keeping perfect time since I picked it up during the Christmas holidays. This was one of the best experiences I've had ~ Setrak is a throwback to the days of traditional, professional craftsmanship and is a San Francisco treasure. NO STAR - they returned my watch to me not as it was left with them. it was there to be cleaned $550.00 the stem would not screw in tight, the face of the watch was not stable. they added a 22% credit card fee without informing me prior to the charge. they had my watch for cleaning and ceramic band repair. held onto the watch for 4 months with almost no communication. WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. asked for my money back as I had to bring it to another watch repair to have it working the way it's intended. Mr. Setrak himself interacts directly with the customers and I find him to be not only very good at what he does, but also a very kind and honest man as well. I have taken my husband's watches to him to get the batteries replaced from time to time, and he was always very quick to complete the tasks at hand and happily chatted with me the whole time and made me feel very welcomed indeed. Once I took in a not often used watch to simply have the battery removed and he insisted on not charging me for it. I would highly advise visiting this family run small business with lots of old world class and courtesy often not found sadly in large cities such as SF. Setrak repaired my 20 year old Tag Heuer watch given to me by my father. It had actually been serviced by someone else fairly recently, but was already behaving oddly. Additionally, the bezel was no longer locking. I brought it in to Setrak, and 5 weeks later the watch is running smoothly and the bezel was fixed. He even went out of his way to polish and sand the watch. It looks brand new and I couldn't be happier. 100% worth it. You can trust him with your timepiece. He is also trusted by neighboring luxury jewelry retailers, such as Shreve and Co to do repairs. 375.00 to fix a "higher end" Swiss quartz watch. Mr setrak stated given the retail for this watch 375 was reasonable to get it working again. It had stopped after a battery died and new battery did not restore function. Setrak opened up watch and tried new battery ti no success. Charged only 10 to examine and attempt battery switch. Estimate at end was 375 to repair and 4-5 weeks. Watch was returned in perfect working order. Problem was in attempting to polish case and band, the gold plating on case and face of case were buffed too much and became discolored. It would be OK if only the band had this happen as I can buy a band replacement but the case needs to be re-electroplated now --- not cheap. Would like to suggest to Mr Setrak that in buffing and polishing to use a lighter hand and start with the band. If discoloration occurs ...stop and let customer know. Don't continue on to damage the case which is expensive to replace or replace. Watch is ruined and was repaired as gift for a little old lady .... she was gracious but I could see was disappointed. read more

Came to get the battery replaced on my husband's Omega watch that was gifted to him several years ago by his father. *CASH ONLY. Services: +Battery Replacement- $25 (depends on the specific make of your watch) +Resizing- $25 to take out a link to make it smaller and more fitted to his wrist (again depends on your own watch); he told me that the previous craftsman damaged the little rod that holds the links together and that he was surprised the watch didn't get lost. He seemed pretty upset by it but I have no idea what the previous watch guy did so I don't know why this is my fault. The services are expensive but he got the job done on the spot in 20 minutes. The Shreve & Co downstairs ask double the service fee ($50 for battery replacement) that Setrak does and all they do is take the elevator up to give it to him. -Hungry Hungry Pongy read more

Wow...this place is amazing. I was walking down the street near Union SQ when I noticed my watch stopped working. I went into a nearby high end jeweler to get a quote. According to the clerk it was going to take 5 weeks to repair and between 3-500...but then she told me about Setrak's. Setrak knows his stuff, is extremely fast, and charged a very fair price...plus hes just a nice guy. I walked in without any reservations and he fixed my watch immediately. Setrak Maghdissian _is_ truly a craftsman. I got sent up to him by Frank Suess downstairs because my Tag was beyond his ability to service. In all honesty, I didn't know what to expect; certainly not that anyone could do anything for my timepiece in this day and age. The most I was anticipating could be done was a battery replacement. Parts needed to be ordered, time had to be paid, and I was on a long list of other clients that included Shreve, Macy's, Nordstrom, et alia. No worries; I'm patient. The old Tag has seen its share of wear and tear over the decade with no servicing [a broken spring, a dried up and cracking seal, the battery was way past its life, and the band (embarrassed to show Setrak) was in deplorable condition]. What I got back from Setrak's was like a new watch. All the bits and pieces of Humpty Dumpty were put back together and Setrak's gave it a buff and shine to boot. He even set the time to near perfection. I was hesitant to entrust anyone would be able to perform quality work on anything (the last person to crack the case for a simple battery swap badly scratched up the body) - Setrak has earned my confidence in his abilities and my Tag will go to him for checkups for as long as humanly possible. Tip for those going: Setrak's doesn't accept credit cards but he does take a check (I went even further old school with cold hard cash). read more

So I took my Baume & Mercier watch there and replaced its battery for half the price that Shreve & Co charged me last time. Great service! AND HERE IS THE BEST SECRET OF ALL: Shreve sends its customers' watches to Setrak's to be repaired and then doubles Setrak's service charge. (Setrak's didn't tell me that, but I have had heard rumors about that and then confirmed this when I asked to see the old battery from my watch: it had Setrak's markings on it.)
