His crew came in and fixed some exposed rebar, added in a step where one was needed and smoothed out the finish. It looks sooo much better. When we went looking for a contractor to build the new deck, we found Austin Outdoor Builders through their listing on Yelp and their website. Kit called me within a couple of days of my email, and really impressed me with his knowledge and experience with decks. I was concerned about City of Austin inspections, and he was very reassuring, pointing out that he talks to the inspectors by phone regularly. He booked a time to go over the engineering plan and the site, and again, I was very impressed when we met. He spoke of extensive experience in building decks, and asked questions about the site and the plan that reflected this. The quote was not cheap, but what is these days? My main concern was that they do the job properly and work with COA inspectors. Work started within a couple of weeks, and I was quite pleased with how the workers did their job. The only delay was to find an engineer to certify the footings before pouring the concrete. I had originally expressed concern about the durability of the support timbers, and Kit offered to coat them before laying the decking. Imagine my surprise when I found them painting the framing with high end professional oil based enamel! The only other delay was the week of the ice storm when Austin was closed for the duration. I was lucky to have family to remove the trees that fell on the lumber in the yard, because the next Monday they were back at work. Both the framing and final inspections went very smoothly and I am delighted with my new deck. I recommend Austin Outdoor Builders to anyone needing a deck.

I'll talk more about our full experience below, but a couple of months ago we had a terrible storm in our neighborhood and a very large tree (at least 25 feet tall) fell directly on our fence. Despite a direct hit, the fence stood firm with only a small dent in the cap board. Talk about quality work! More broadly, our experience was great. We worked with a super helpful person laying out the task who made some fantastic design suggestions (totally not on our radar) that we're really happy with. The work was done efficiently to mimimize the amount of time we had to keep our dog out of the yard. And when seasonal shifting made it impossible to open our gate, they came and fixed it months after the work was done. Great experience all around and would recommend to anyone.

After hiring him 5 weeks ago to replace 2 trees in our front yard we noticed one wasn't looking great while the other was thriving. Upon further inspection, we discovered the tree was dead and not just died dead like dead dead. The whole tree from top to bottom was as dry as a bone several layers into the trunk along with branches snapping off like nothing. I texted him nicely to go over the situation and he immediately started gaslighting me that I killed the tree. Every single time he would ask me about how I did something. I would tell him, then he would come up with another excuse of why I killed it. He then went by the house to check on it and tried to tell me I over saturated it and that's why it died, but that moisture was from us testing and running the bubblers a few hours before he showed up to see if that's what caused the tree to die. I can assure you a tree doesn't die and dry up completely tip to trunk in 5 weeks. Learn from my mistake, hire the other guy!

Told me it would take one day it took 5 days (weather was not an issue). Tore down 2 sides of fence and had a mess everywhere - even in the neighbor's yard (see pic - I was worried that someone would get hurt with the exposed nails.) And left the side open to neighbors for 2 days. Did not haul off all the old posts. Had asked them to use screws (multiple times and was assured they would) when putting the panels back on - they used a nail gun mostly and some of the panels are already falling off (it has been only a couple days). They finished after dark, so I stupidly was unable to inspect a final time. I emailed them and asked them to come back, but they are not responding.

I have recommended Marks Builders to many of my family and friends, and they've all had great things to say too.  Read on if you want the whole story! I had a leak in a wall between two bathrooms, above the kitchen.  Just to set the scene, my wife was pregnant and we had a baby due 3 weeks after the start of the construction.  My kitchen had a dropped ceiling and was original to the 1970s house.  Dustin worked with State Farm (my insurance carrier) to bring the adjuster's repair estimate up to a par. He and his team worked with us to order cabinets early (we were getting custom cabinets so they had a long lead time), then they gutted the kitchen and bathroom, raising the ceiling to 8' (reworking the HVAC, plumbing, and electrical lines in the process).  They pulled up all of the tile in the downstairs while we were out of the house (and in the hospital having the baby).  We asked for a few days at home without construction when we came home, to which they agreed. They worked hard to make sure that the house was ready for cabinets when they would be delivered. The cabinets were delivered without issue and installed the same week, with the trim taking longer than any other single step because they wanted it to look just right - and it paid off! The finishing touches make all the difference! The granite crew came in and did their thing. Like all of Dustin's sub-contractors, they were on time, professional, and courteous. They did their work well, quickly, and cleanly. We opted for granite counters and granite backsplashes, with different edge finishes in different places, corners, etc. to work around. They did it all well. Our kitchen looks fantastic, even a year and a half later. Through the whole 2-month process, Dustin's crew was on-site 4-6 days/week, except when we asked for the break. We made a lot of changes midway through, and Dustin didn't nickel and dime on the little things (moving an outlet, changing from a 2 gang to a 4 gang plug, etc). He was happy to work with my attention to detail (which can frustrate most people I know) and he did it with a smile - his attention to detail was similar. His crew was always fun to have around, and I never once worried about them being in the home, whether I was there or not. They worked hard to make sure we felt safe with them in the house at the start of Covid. All said, I strongly recommend Marks Builders. They're honest, smart, hard-working, and fun people who care about the work they produce and their customers' experience.
