We brought our diamond certification and he was able to tell us the cut, color, carat and clarity of my center stone, SPOT ON, without looking at the certificate! My fiancé and I were in awe, and it was such a fun experience watching Richard tell us what the diamond is as we compare it to the certificate I was holding. Most importantly, he took time to listen to our engagement story, our main reason for the appraisal, and we were able to tell him our concerns about the diamond, how to get proper insurance, and if we really got the value we paid for. People either Yelp for the first time because they are extremely dissatisfied with products, services or is extremely satisfied with the overall experience. I am one satisfied client. I've contacted several Jewelers in the area to get my husband's ring appraised. Most stores quoted me about a week with $250/hour for appraisal. I've contacted Richard and he was able to do it on the spot for $75 (with Certificate). Since then, I've been fortunate enough to work with him designing some custom jewelry for myself. He helped us custom design our Wedding rings 22 years ago, and as age, and a very dumb entanglement with our garbage disposal accident, he and his team brought my ring back to new! I joined Yelp just so I could write a stellar review for Richard, who was awesome to work with. A few months ago, my fiancee purchased a 1.33 carat round diamond online to make into an engagement ring. I wanted a platinum 4 prong setting with channel set side stones (2.5mm wide, 1.5mm high)--nothing too fancy or unique. Richard said that he would try to find what I wanted through his suppliers; if he couldn't, he could have my ring custom made. After looking through several catalogs, he found a setting close to what I wanted, but I decided that I wanted to have my ring custom made instead. The jeweler he works with created a mold of my setting, and after I approved it, my beautiful ring was made! The whole process took about 4-5 visits, but Richard was extremely patient and thoughtful. I thought that I could easily find a matching wedding band, but I couldn't. I found one that was 2.0mm high, but even that tiny 0.5mm difference from my engagement ring proved to be uncomfortable. Richard said that he would rather make a custom wedding band for me, so he did for the same price as the one I found online. My rings turned out exactly how I wanted (see pictures). Small store with metered parking in front. Needed an ring appraised for insurance, they are closed Mon. Got a free parking space around the corner by the auto repair place. Appointment is suggested, I had a GIA report and old appraisal, so it didn't take long ~15min. Usual charge for appraisal is $85, but he offered me a discount since I had a lot of information already. Richard is honest and fair not over inflating the appraisal value. I would use the shop again. He mails the appraisal the same week. Very personal and family run store feeling. read more

This is a review for jewelry repair. I brought in an antique wind watch that doesn't keep time anymore for an estimate, and a marcasite ring missing several stones for repair. I was given a time frame of 4 days for the watch estimate, and 9 days and $15-$20 for the ring repair. The estimates and repair are not done on site. Everything took longer than expected and the lack of communication was disappointing, but the repair work itself was great. After 7 days I called and was given a $95 estimate for the watch, which I declined to have repaired. (I have no idea if this is a good estimate or not, but the watch isn't worth that much to me). After 13 days I called to ask about the watch, and was told that the stones were ordered but hadn't come in yet. Finally on day 19 I got a call that the ring was ready to be picked up. As I mentioned, the ring repair was quite satisfactory, I'm quite happy with it. The cost was $20. read more

What a great little store. After being rudely turned away from several jewelery stores, looking for someone who could repair a broche from my mother, I found Nuance. They happily looked at it, said they could replace the missing blue bead and clean it, all for only $25. It's priceless to me, but it is costume jewelery. They knew how important this small piece was to me and clean it and replaced two simple turquoise beads. I'm wearing it as my "blue" at my commitment ceremony this year, so precious! I've been to Nuance several times now to have my white gold wedding rings cleaned and re-plated with rhodium. They have also changed the posts on some earrings my husband bought elsewhere (they came with screw-back posts that ripped up my ears!). Richard has always been very friendly yet professional. Wow, I can't express how happy I am with Richard and his work at Nuance Design Jewelers. Having received a ring with A loose diamond In A tricky setting, we wanted to make sure we found a skilled jeweler we could trust. We spent an afternoon in Burlingame and went to 5 different jewelers on the block. each told us a very different story about what was causing the diamond to be loose and how to fix it. Some offered expensive methods that involved taking the whole ring apart, while other offered generic methods all which didn't seem like they would really fix the issue. We finally made our way to Richard's office where he thoroughly examined the ring and gave us an answer that made sense and an excellent method to fix it. He was so friendly and honest. No only did he find out exactly what the problem was but he explained the ethos he would use to fix it and all at a very reasonable price for the repair. With it being the holidays, (which is a very busy time for jewelers) he still gave us a short timeline to get the ring, and he even beat his deadline by 3 days! He communicated with us the whole time and fixed the ring wonderfully. I am so pleased am amazed with the incredible service, expert knowledge and personal touch he puts into his work Richard provided. I would trust him with any jewelry and would feel assured he is honest and offers reasonable prices.
