Via Sophia is a sophisticated restaurant and bar located inside, and connected to, the Hamilton Hotel. Every detail in the space feels intentional. The marble counters, the glassware, and one very important detail for me... the bathrooms were clean! I visited for drinks before an event taking place at the hotel. The bartender was so kind while taking my very random gin martini order: bruised, dirty, and with olives. Yes, I know... I did that to a gin martini lol. He looked at me sideways for a second and then said, "I got you lol." We also ordered a regular margarita. Both drinks were tasty and exactly what I was looking for. I would definitely recommend this spot for business meetings, date nights, or cocktails with friends. The atmosphere feels elevated without being stuffy, which I really appreciated. As for parking? I had such a great experience here that I don't even know where to start. I can start with Adealio(sp) who was such an awesome bartender and catered to whatever need I had. Extremely exemplatory of someone who takes their career serious. He was very helpful as I decided to take my sip through the unlimited mimosas offered by Via Sophia. I am so not a champagne girly so I definitely skipped the traditional and allowed Adelio to choose my first sip since I couldn't many up my mind lol. Then our journey began. He made them to my liking and each one was better and better. The Merlot was definitely my favorite. Can you see the head on that guy?! I would come back and sit at the bar just to be taken care of by him any day. The restaurant was beautifully decorated inside as well and a cute place to have brunch. They didn't offer much food that I enjoyed on their brunch menu, however my friend did get the chocolate gelato which I was told was extremely tasty. Went on a relatively slow day. Young lady took our orders. I ordered wings, my son a pepperoni pizza. Got my wings right away. Waited 15-20 before I asked the waitress who's young, so I won't burn her, but either way when I asked where my sons pizza was, she returned to tell me that "they hadn't seen the pizza order". This is a limited review, based upon limited fare, but what I had at the bar was all very good and with great service. Met up with a friend at the bar. I had the seasonal old-fashioned, recommended by the bartender, and really enjoyed it. We both also had the house chianti by the glass and it was a solid choice. The best thing I tried though was the squash soup; it was warm, comforting, and delicious. The ambiance was bright without overwhelming, and lively without being loud. I'm a huge lover of cherry blossoms, so when my SO and I saw this beautiful cherry blossom themed space in our hotel, I knew we had to try it. Hanami is a small offshoot of Hamilton hotel's in-house restaurant, Via Sophia. It's a very small space right next to the main restaurant that was previously used as a speakeasy, but now overflows with beautiful (albeit, fake) cherry blossom decor for a few months during the spring. Dining is scheduled on a reservation-only basis, but reservations look relatively easy to grab. They offer a 3- or 5- course tasting menu celebrating spring flavors and a decent drinks menu, if you don't want to choose the optional beverage pairing. For our three-course menu, we had: - Hotel Tango Cherry Poached Pear: The first course was a cherry-poached pear with goat cheese and shiso- loved the sweet and savory pairings here, especially since I'm a fan of goat cheese. The texture of the poached pear started to wear on me towards the end but it was a very enjoyable bite. - Venison Ossubucco: The second course was my unexpected favorite! The venison was super tender and just melted in my mouth. Paired with farrotto (farro grain cooked risotto-style), the textures were divine and the flavors were so savory. I would have loved to have more and more of this. - Cherry Stracciatella Semifreddo: Dessert was also surprisingly good! Our waiter described it to us as a deconstructed ice cream bar, which didn't sound all that appealing to me at first as a generally non-lover of ice cream, but ended up being delicious and flavorful. Our waiter was friendly and personable, but the time that stretched between courses stretched longer than expected. It's understandable, given that this dining area is separate from the main restaurant, so the only people that are around are just you and your fellow diners. My SO and I ended up being the last diners in the space, so our waiter let us hang around for a few minutes after dinner to enjoy the space and take pictures since it's so beautifully decorated. While not the cheapest, we felt that price was reasonable for the value and experience. I had an immensely good time and would recommend stopping by if you're ever in the area during cherry blossom season. The restaurant is on the hotel property right on the corner so you have the option to dine in or dine outside on their terrace overlooking Franklin Park. The restaurant is very classy and provides a full service restaurant, bread service, and bar. The staff and hostess were very friendly. When we went down for dinner, we were seated right away. The restaurant is very clean and has a cozy set up and inviting. The menu options looked delicious. We settled on something simple and ordered bucatini carbonara. The dish was nice and hot and was a good portion. The pasta was cooked al dente which is great however, this one was a little too al dente. The carbonara sauce wasn't as creamy as I've had at other restaurants, and it had so much black pepper that it overpowered the taste of the pancetta or bacon that was used in the dish. Nonetheless, we were hungry and finished it right away! Would I eat there again...? It depends. Highly Recommend The eggs were flawless--creamy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Potatoes? Just as amazing. You can tell this kitchen avoids the usual overcooked trap most places fall into. Barry, greeter and host, was warm and welcoming, making everyone feel at home. Actually the staff who checked in on me and brought my food was equally engaging and friendly. I was staying at the Hamilton Hotel so it was very convenient. I went one night and tried to order a Caesar salad with chicken. Apparently they won't add chicken to the your salad but you can add salmon. I didn't have time to go anywhere else, so I just got salmon and it was good as well. The next day I stopped in late afternoon, early evening and was told they only serve pizza until before 5 pm. My friends and I definitely found that odd, but again didn't have time to go anywhere else some of us ordered pizza and drinks. The espresso martinis are delicious! I think I would only recommend this place and a pregame spot for drinks, not really for food, as they seem to be very picky in what they serve. read more

He overheard that my friend was transitioning from her current position and gave her a special treat. Such amazing service and attention to detail. The food at this place was wonderful though the service from the staff other than the bartender was weird. We had a reservation and we asked if we could take advantage of happy hour deals. I thought the bartender would have help but it looks like he had to service the full bar and our table, which I felt quite bad about because he didn't seem to have a lot of help. So, my friends and I were in DC for the Pride Parade and..... got hungry! We didn't want to miss any of the parade, so by the time we actually decided to find food, we were hangry. When I first saw the sign on this place I thought it was the Hamilton restaurant. But, it's the Hamilton Hotel. The Via Sophia is the restaurant located within. I was surprised that we were able to find a table as soon as we walked in! WINNING. But I was also thrown off by the plastic cups in which our water was served (when we finally got service). I was parched, and could see the water, but nobody was assisting. My friend finally asked if they were short servers to which the reply was that our server became ill and had to go home. I finally got some water only because I asked one of the servers standing by. There were several standing close, but nobody wanted to help. It was weird, like they were all confused for something. Finally a woman arrived to take our order (Shrita). I asked her name (twice for clarification) and she seemed offended. Actually, her whole vibe was, 'I'm too good to take your order'. She was messing up my pride energy! One of my friends asked for an Old Fashion, but when she found out it would be in a plastic cup she canceled it. Why can't we get a glass? Because we're not using glasses now. Hmmm.... But, EVERYBODY was drinking out of plastic cups so, I'll go with it. Weird tho.... We ordered. Shrita had to come back for clarification because she didn't write anything down. Why? The bar tender came to save the day. I guess the manager was sensing our mood and had him take over. I had a nice dinner here yesterday at Via Sophia! Every dish was good, with some real winners mixed in. The fig bruschetta was good, except for the soggy bread. The whole branzino was stunning and perfectly cooked. I love a good pasta dish, and the bucatini obviously included fresh handmade pasta. The tartufo was a deliciously rich dessert. Overall, pretty good food! I wish the restaurant wasn't so loud- I hate having to ask other people to repeat themselves over and over again. So, maybe this place is just fine if you happen to be staying in the hotel and you feel too exhausted to go anywhere else, but really you still should walk a few blocks and...go somewhere else. Even the salad was soggy and had been overdressed for hours by the time I received it. A woman I chatted to briefly when she asked about the pasta I was eating and I suggested she not get it - had to tell me how terrible the pizza was that she'd had the day earlier, but again, she was staying in the hotel and just felt too tired to venture out. Had a lovely Valentine's Day dinner at Via Sophia. On this night, they only were doing their prix fixe menu (I believe). It was four courses for $69, which I thought was pretty good. The ambiance was beautiful yet simple. The staff were nice and the service was good. Wasn't big fan of the ahi tuna (this was my first time ever having ahi tuna). It just wasn't for me. The truffle risotto and shortrib tortellini was SOOOOO GOOD! Literally a 10/10. We wished the portions were bigger because it was that delicious. I'd definitely come back for those. The NY strip and halibut were good but didn't wow us. For dessert, we tried the budino and tiramisu. The budino was good but the tiramisu was absolutely delicious. Things I enjoyed: - The price was incredibly reasonable for the quality and quantity of food I received. - the service was really great from beginning to end. The restaurant is nestled at the Hamilton Hotel and I loved that they provide high quality service from start (with coat check) to finish. However, I feel the high quality ended when it came to the food. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and it was presented over hard which was a major let down for my meal. The Arancini wasn't anything worth mentioning and the Tiramisu felt like a cake drenched in coffee - it overpowered the dessert. We started with the Grilled Calamari appetizer that was a different take than the usual fried version you usually get. For our Entrees we got the Bucatini that was a carbonara style with shrimp as well as the pappardelle with rabbit. Both were smaller portions but still filling. They both were decently flavored but nothing amazing either. Desserts were tiramisu and zeppole. The tiramisu was classic and tasted good. The ricotta donuts were good, but simple, nothing special. Overall it was an ok meal. Not amazing, but not bad either. I do agree with the other reviews that said the food pace can be slow. It is lovely setting in downtown. We tried several appetizers - lasagna vegetarian small rolls is amazing. With eggplant - I can eat another 3 easily. Then we tried the pizza funghi - love the crispy dough. Mushrooms tasty - no tomato sauce. Highly recommend the pizza - had it as appetizer. Final course was chicken marsala. A unique implementation. While staying at the Hamilton a month ago, we went to Via Sophia twice. The first was after dinner elsewhere, we wanted to pop in for a drink before retiring for the evening. We had one of those weird experiences where the place didn't look busy, but it was hard to get us a table. They tried to seat us at the bar, then there was a table, then there wasn't, eventually we got a little 2-top near the pillar that looks like it's exactly where they seat people when there's no room. No worries though, we eventually sat down and got our drinks, but at a table like that you kind of feel like you're just extra, and then you don't enjoy your visit quite as much. But the server was very friendly and we decided to go back the next night for dinner. The next night we had a reservation, but somehow still felt like we were extra. I have a feeling this is just how it can be here sometimes. We were welcomed, but didn't feel super welcome. The service was fine, the food was fine, but nothing special. I had steak, my wife had pasta, and neither of us were much impressed. I didn't feel the prices were too crazy though, so it was a fine meal at a nice place. We had a few antipasto dishes, salad, and two main dishes to share among three so that we could have well balance variety on the table. Ask the server for bread early--you'll want some delicious focaccia to pair with the perfect cheese. Our mushroom bisque was rich, hearty, and tasty as heck! Weekday Lunch Review $25 for soup, entree (salad, sandwich or pasta) and tiramisu. This is a great deal because the entrees are ~$19, so why not?! I don't remember what the soup was, but it is green and tasted great. For the main, I got the Rigatoni Alla Norma, typically $18, which has eggplant, tomato, chiles and garlic. It was delicious.
