Worst service I've ever had - extremely rude and disrespectful employees. We show up at 5:04 (hours say they reopen at 5) and the door is locked. We look inside to see two employees looking at us and laughing at the bar just standing there. We give them the benefit of the doubt because it's a new restaurant and maybe they are still setting up. 15 minutes go by and I call to ask if they're open. The woman answering the phone was looking at me talking through the window and says "Yes we are open" but does not come to unlock the door. They proceed to look at us through the window and laugh and stand around the bar area. Around 5:30 a waitress finally opens the door and we ask if they opened at 5 and she goes "Yes, we're open." There was no acknowledgment or apology about opening late or the laughing. She seats us at a dirty table with dirty silverware. We immediately get up and walk out - it was not even worth staying to try the food. I hope the staff there gets better training or they hire better employees or else this place will go down quickly. read more

This is the only place I go for Hot Pot within Davis. Highly recommend Spicy Sichuan with Angus or Wagyu when selecting entrees. The vibe is layback and chill without any commotion. Asking questions regarding the menu was immediately explained to any of my friends new to hot pot. read more

The food was decent but the service was one of the worst I've ever experienced. I personally have worked in multiple restaurants so I know how it can be during a special day but I never would have acted the way our server was acting. My partner and I came in on a busy night since it was the last day of their BOGO special so I understand it was very hectic, but our server was terrible. He would constantly just run by and slam our food on our table without saying anything, looking at us, or even telling us which item was which. When we were trying to place our order, he took my partner's order and walked away without saying anything without even taking my order. We had to call him back to get my order or else I would have been sitting there with no food. We had to constantly remind our server about items we ordered that never came and nobody even turned on our stovetop for our hotpot. We had to turn it on ourselves otherwise we would have just been left there with cold soup and raw meat. At the end of our meal, the server just looked at us and didn't even say thank you as we were leaving. The female server working on other tables that same night was great and she still took time to tell us which soup was which when dropped off. The overall ambiance was okay, but it was also partially ruined by our same server having to apologize to every table around us for making constant mistakes one after another. read more

I am a huge fan of Shabu Shack so I had to check the Davis location out. It was the same thing as the EG location, but more modern. Food wise was also on point! I ordered the Angus beef w/ Spicy Sichuan + Tom Yum broth. Meat was high quality and the broths were very flavorful. Even without AYCE, I was very full off the large meat + veggie bowl. They provide good portions. Service was great. One of the owners, Anthony, was very attentive and made sure we were happy with our meal. We are huge fans of shabu shack!! We've tried the San Jose one and the Elk Grove location. And the one thing that draws them away from the other locations is the enoki mushrooms and gyukatsu-wagyu! I looove enoki mushrooms. Our go to is Kobe beef and beef belly. With the Szechuan and tonkatsu. What's great is that you can get 3 broths and we started getting Tom yum as well!! Which is just as delicious. The service here has been great the past 2 times I've came, we got our food quickly. And staff were attentive and checked on our tables. Some of the staff are still learning the menu which is a given. I think with grand openings/soft openings, grace has to be given! I also love the ambiance in there. The decor is so cute and great for photos with friends. I will definitely be back with a few friends for a get together. read more

Shabu Shack has great food, a lot of options to choose for your hot pot, appetizers are good also (especially the calamari). The owner is very friendly. He talked and checked up on us a lot. There was a whole as grasshopper in our veggies and they claimed it jumped in our pot after the food was served. My boyfriend even saw them bring the food out, didn't put it on the table just poured the veggies in and he thought he saw a bug. I didn't believe him until we stirred it and it surfaced. They brought the pot to the back and the server just said chief said that didn't come from the kitchen. This is just my experience. The service here has gotten a lot better and they were very attentive. We were seated right away once we came in (even with our large party of 10). After reading the past reviews we were worried about service but we are so glad we gave them a shot. They must have hired more staff or better staff because they were great to us! Food was the standard Shabu/hotpot with an AYCE option. Meat quality was quite good and the options include American wagyu ribeye and seafood as well as pork, lamb, beef bacon etc... get one vegetable combo and share it for two. The sauces were a sesame and a ponzu with green onion and garlic to mix in. I wonder why none of these places offer grated daikon radish which is essential in real Shabu Shabu to mix in the sauce. Togarashi would be nice also. I may smuggle some in on my next visit. Service was attentive although I asked for some salt and was told they don't offer it. I had the tonkatsu broth and the lobby. The konbu/water needed salt or some hon-Dashi but neither was available. Interesting Asian soft drinks and soju were available. They also offer 3 way split pot for the broths. Excellent service! Servers are very attentive and friendly. Restaurant is nicely decorated and very clean. Amazing food, great service. My waitress was extremely kind and checked on me regularly. Come here if you need protein. Bodybuilder, or powerlifter, on a budget; the all you can eat option for the price here, especially in Davis, is insane. I had the Tom Yum hotpot with multiple rounds of wagyu, angus, and mussels. I recommend throwing the pumpkin in there and breaking it apart when it gets soft to get this creamy texture for the broth. Sipping on the broth in between dipping the meat into their sauce was delicious. The ambience of the restaurant was relaxing with old R&B playing and a Japanese aesthetic. We were a party of 5 on Friday night coming in at 7PM, seated around 8PM. We got the AYCE menu Food: It was great! The sichuan broth was amazing, the best one so far. We've also had the spicy tonkotsu broth and spicy miso broth. They were really good soups to just have for veggies and vermicelli/instant ramen with. There isn't as much options for AYCE compared to the regular menu, but both menus look great to go through regardless! We had a chance to try everything on the AYCE menu. Everything was delicious and good quality. 5/5 Eat and enjoy whatever you'd like from either menus. Service: They only had 4 servers this night. They were incredibly busy but everyone we interacted with was great. It was a rough start to our service because of how busy the place got. We didn't get fully settled with drinks or utensils until about 20 minutes after being seated. And the food also didn't start coming out until 10 minutes later, so 30 minutes after being seated. Afterwards, it was a great time. 4/5 I'd go ASAP for dinner on weekend nights. Ambiance: It was a great looking restaurant! It felt cozy to me and I was able to have a great time with my friends. There were two TVs with only one program being casted on one of them. But that didn't really take away from the dining experience for me. Unfortunately, we left before we could try the food due to the lack of service. We were seated at 7:53 pm on 4/6. The chairs were dirty so we had to clean it off ourselves before we sat down. We noticed that they were severely understaffed with the hostess also being a waitress and the cleaner also being a waiter. Not a single server asked us what we wanted to drink. We found this place on IG for soft opening. We decided to stop by for lunch. We were greeted by friendly staff when we walked in. This place is decorated with a beautiful Japanese style wall painting. For a moment, I thought I was in Japan because of the ambiance setting! :) The quality of all the meats were excellent. Soups were so tasty. I especially addicted to the sesame dressing. Everything was delicious! Staff were very helpful and attentive. She explained to us how to order in full details. Nice shabu spot in Davis. Located in the Davis commons. We got their Tom yum & spicy tonkotsu broth. I don't really remember each flavor but the broths were light and not too overpowering. Tried their new fish sauce wings they were great. The fish sauce flavor was not too strong or salty, just right. We also got the dynamite mussels which I thought were ok, not memorable. We got American wagyu, beef belly, and lamb. Great quality meat! Very nice size cuts too. Each plate comes with vegetable and a starch. We also added fish roe balls and potstickers for the hot pot. We got the mango and lychee cocktail, they were clear liquor and light in flavor and not too strong. Had a very nice lunch! read more

I've been to this location now twice and both times have been excellent. The service was amazing and each time we had a very attentive server, this last time our waitress was Katie and she was great and checked on us often. My group tried the corn cheese for an appetizer, which was absolutely amazing, -- for entrees we got the tonkatsu and spicy sichuan broth as well as the american waygu, angus, and veggie platter. Everything was delicious and came out in a timely manner. The kpop music that was also playing gave it a fun vibe. I look forward to bringing more friends here in the future for dinner and hope next time to try their cocktails! read more

I do not see this establishment lasting in Davis. We came at 5pm and waited 20 mins for them to unlock the door. Meanwhile the waitresses just laughed at us when we were waiting outside. My friend called them and they answered the phone saying they were open (they were not). We see them giggle again after the phone call. Finally they unlock door with no apology. We told the waitresses that they saw us waiting outside for 20mins after the posted opening, and she said "well we are open now". Upon entering, the seats and utensils were dirty. I came here with some friends and family on Saturday night. I would recommend making a reservation if you have a big party like we did because they get busy! The ambience is nice considering they have lovely decor and good music playing. The food was really tasty, we got the sichuan, tonkotsu, and tomyum broth. Their kobe was super marbled and delicious! We were also given complimentary ice cream at the end! We came in expecting bad service considering some reviews, but we did ayce and our waitress was super friendly and attentive! She had an answer to all our questions and was quick despite how busy it got. However, the only downside would be the waiters forgetting to do things we asked for and walking by and not noticing us, and sometimes the meat would take a while to come out. Despite the problems, 5/5 because it is only their soft opening and I could see their grand opening being better! Me and my fiancé was craving hotpot so we found this spot near by. We came in on a Friday around 7 before it got too packed. Once we walked in we was greeted at the door and the host was able to seat us right away. We both decided to do the AYCE which was around 39.99 per person. The quality of the meat selection that we got was amazing. Everything basically melted in your mouth. The broth we got was Tom yum and tonkatsu. I would definitely be coming back since we live close by. All of the servers was attentive and helpful when we asked for more things. We also ordered the A5 wagyu on the side and boyyyy was that amazing. Melted like butta! The ambiance in general was beautiful. They had a pretty mural of this lady right on the wall that I forgot to take a picture of. And the location was perfect. The food is great. Almost everything we got tasted really good and the broth and sides all were pretty decent quality. The only reason I would not come back is the service. I went with a party of 5 and we did all you can eat. The servers were nice, but they took a very long time to bring out the items we ordered. On average we had to wait 20 minutes for each order to come out. There was even a time where we ordered and they completely forgot to bring anything out. I understand that there were only 2 servers and as such bringing food out may have been difficult, but it was ridiculous that they took that long especially considering the 90 minute time limit. On top of that, the restaurant wasn't even that busy as we went on a Monday night. Ultimately we paid a premium price and, while the food measured up, the service definitely did not. If I'm craving hotpot I will look elsewhere unless there are drastic changes made. read more

We flagged a couple people but they all said hold on and when they finally came to take our order the meat itself took another 10 minutes to come out. They got 5 servers working in this small a** restaurant. Out of the 5, maybe 2 were at least trying to care. The rest were NPCs. Trust me when I say I'm not being a Karen either.. We waited until 5:25 before being let in, after being stared at by the employees through the glass for the previous 20 minutes. My friend additionally called asking if they were open at around 5:15, only to be met with the response that they were open while they laughed at her calling and still did not open the door. My family and I are huge lovers of Shabu Shack! When we heard this location opened, we had to come check it out. Location is great with tons of parking. The inside of the restaurant is very spacious and could definitely accommodate large parties as well! We did the AYCE option and our server Sonny was very attentive despite it being busy for their dinner rush. We love the quality meats like the angus beef and especially the beef belly toro! We also enjoyed some appetizers like the squid karaage (squid legs) and shrimp tempura- they were amazing! S/o to the staff for working diligently during this soft opening! We'll be back! read more
